At Baptism, parents make a solemn promise to bring their children up in the practice of the faith. We are here to assist you in this process through the support and resources of our community. Catholic Faith Formation is an ongoing process, not only for children, but for all adults for as long as we live. For grades 1st through 9th:

Children who attend Public School:

These students need to attend Faith Formation classes & follow the parish sacramental policy. Through regular attendance, they will learn their Catholic Faith in a peer to peer environment geared to their age level.

Children who attend Catholic School:

They do not need to attend parish classes but, according to Diocesan policy, they will celebrate their sacraments within their parish and therefore must attend specified parish sacramental preparation sessions.

Children who are Home Schooled:

They are encouraged to follow the same faith education curriculum used throughout the parish, which can be provided by the Faith Formation Office. If they are using a different curriculum it must be submitted to Director of Faith Formation for verification. If they choose to use the same curriculum at home, they do not need to attend Faith Formation Classes but, since they will celebrate their sacraments with other children of the parish, they must attend all the specified parish sacramental preparation sessions.

Sacramental Policy

We have a two-year preparation requirement for the reception of Sacraments. For First Reconciliation and First Eucharist, a child must attend 1st & 2nd grade. For Confirmation, a potential candidate must attend two consecutive grades. Consistent attendance in all grades is expected for every student.

Online registration is open for grades k-12 for the

2017-2018 academic year.

To register, please visit, sjbsummerville.org/faith-formation-registration

For more information, please contact Jan Antor at: [email protected]

Confirmation RCIA or Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and Confirmation are two things we are probably all familiar with. The question is, what do these two things have to do with each

other, and the answer is…well, a lot. The sacrament of confirmation “seals us with the Spirit, which we received at baptism.” It is not only a sealing of the spirit, and a sacrament that imbues us with grace, but a very public profession of faith, this is why the RCIA format makes so much sense as a model for confirmation, and why we at St. John the Beloved have chosen to pursue it. This model breaks down into four parts.

1) Period of Inquiry - Learning about the requirements for confirmation along with parents, it will also include an interview with the pastor or his designated representatives to discern if this is the right time for confirmation. This period is to encourage students to be open in journeying toward the sacrament, and to identify those who are ready to engage in the next step of the preparation process.

2) Period of Evangelization - For teenagers preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation, this period of time will reintroduce and deepen their understanding of the basic tenets of the Catholic faith. It is a period of “new evangelization” for the teens, and an opportunity for continued conversion to Christ, and a deeper love for His Church. For some, it will be a review, for others, the information may be new. We strive to have this time be both experiential, and deeply catechetical. Framing the Truth of the church in a way that is uniquely geared to the teenage soul. This period will include regular attendance on Sunday nights, plus 3-4 "day's of reflection" throughout the year.

3) Period of Mission - This period begins with a modified rite of election, and will include a second interview with each confirmation candidate. This will also be the time in which candidates will complete their service hour requirements as outlined in the St. John the Beloved confirmation program, The focus will be on missionary service, and a commitment to prayer.

4) Mystgogy - This fourth segment actually occurs AFTER the sacrament of confirmation, and is designed to help the newly confirmed continue to take up their role in the church, continue the life of prayer and discernment they have discovered.

Doors to Freedom

The St. John the Beloved Women’s Club will be participating in a Deanery wide project this summer

called Doors to Freedom. This organization was established to provide a safe place for survivors of sex trafficking to experience a transformed life. Their desire is to lovingly support each individual as she overcomes her traumatic past and receives total restoration: body, soul, and spirit. They are committed to providing a place, free of charge, for these women to call home. Through counseling, life skills training, vocational training and continuing education, she will find new life, restored hope and a beautiful future.

The Women’s Club is asking the entire parish to become involved in this endeavor by donating the following requested items during the months of July, August, and September. A box will be placed in the Common for the collection with a poster listing the requested items. Please consider helping us in making a difference in the lives of these young women.

Sr. Carol’s Retirement

As we are sure you will agree, Sr. Carol’s retirement at St. John the Beloved has left us all a little saddened. She has provided impeccable care to our parish over the years, all we can say is

THANK YOU!

At this time, we have chosen to delegate Sr. Carol’s responsibilities amongst our existing staff at St. John as follows:

RCIA/Inquiry - will be handled as a joint effort between Fr. Jacob and Bryan Burnett.

Senior Luncheon - will be coordinated by Jan Antor.

Funerals - will be facilitated by Fr. Jacob, Rhoda Hiott and Rodney Ward.

Program Contact - is Rhoda Hiott for scheduling, Dianna Mahoney for new program approval and coordination.

Scripture Studies - will be organized by Jan Antor.

Pastoral Visitation - will be arranged by Bryan Burnett

Other Pastoral Needs will be addressed jointly by Fr. Jacob and Bryan Burnett.

All of the above contacts can be reached by contacting the parish office at 843-696-6680 or by utilizing their individual email addresses listed in the front cover of the bulletin.

Property Development

The second collection appeal next weekend will benefit our Parish Property Development Fund. Your generosity throughout the year helps fund various projects and improvements to our property and buildings. Many people have already enjoyed the convenience of our new meeting room in Madden Hall! This space is designed to handle a variety of electronic connections and applications that will allow easy access for faith formation, group meetings, scripture study, etc. The room can comfortably accommodate about 24 adults. During the summer, we also have plans to update the sound system, kitchen equipment, food setup and color scheme in Madden Hall. During the past year, we have retro-fitted all the lights in the church from halogen to LEDs. We have converted space in the chapel to provide a beautiful Reconciliation Room and Mass Sacristy. We are also upgrading the lights in the parking lot and landscaping throughout the property. Please continue to generously support this collection so we can continue these important upgrades to our parish campus.

KofC Pancake Breakfast

The Knights of Columbus Council 6629 would like to invite all parishioners to join us for a Pancake Breakfast following all Masses, next Sunday, July 22nd in Madden Hall. There will also be a membership drive for those men who would like to become a Knight.

A Word to the Wise

Scripture Reflection

How long has it been since you wrote a letter? I mean a real, honest-to-goodness, hand-written letter. We don't write letters much anymore, do we? Letters have pretty much been replaced by phone calls, emails, text messages, and tweets. But there was a time when letters were our main way of staying in touch with friends and family.

Today's reading is a letter from the apostle Paul to his friends in the church at Ephesus. Paul was a missionary and he traveled all around starting new churches. After starting a church, he stayed in touch with them through writing letters. Thirteen books of the New Testament are letters written by Paul to churches or people that he met while on his missionary journeys. That is almost half of the New Testament! Paul wanted to make sure that they were doing the things that God wanted them to do and were following the teaching of Jesus.

One of the great things about Paul's letters is that, not only did he give good advice to the people he was writing to, but his advice is just as useful for us today. Here are a few of the things Paul told the church at Ephesus that we would do well to follow.

Be careful how you live Don't be unwise but wise Make the most of every opportunity Don't get drunk on wine Be filled with the Holy Spirit Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord Give thanks to God for everything

Writing letters may never be as popular as it once was, but thankfully, we still have the letters of Paul. They are full of great advice.
