Renewable Energy Festival
28 March 2015
Green Point Cricket Oval, Cape Town
11am - 10pm
1
“Everyone has the right to a clean
and affordable energy future”
What is the Renewable Energy Festival?
Following the success of the first event, the World Wide Fund for Nature South Africa (WWF-SA) and the Alternative Information Development Center (AIDC) will host the second Renewable Energy Festival. It will take place at Cape Town’s Green Point Cricket Oval on the 28 March 2015.
The festival’s vision is to promote groundswell support for renewable energy and encourage South Africans to ‘normalise’ renewable energy use in their everyday lives.
To achieve this, it is vital that we present the public with a consumer friendly and interactive experience (the festival) and show case, on a number of levels, how exactly renewable energy effectively answers South Africa’s core developmental goals: employment, economic growth and the need for cleaner sources of energy. More importantly, it’s essential that the festival emphasizes the value of adopting renewable energy solutions in peoples’ lives.
The REF is a non-profit event that aims to promote inclusivity and access for all, so the festival is free of charge
to the public. Last year 6500 people visited the festival, and we expect at least 8000 at the second festival next
year.
Why aim it at the public?
Critical decisions regarding the future of South Africa’s energy mix and thus its carbon emissions are being
taken without any real effort to engage the people who stand to lose the most. The impact of climate change
stands to affect the public in devastating ways - job losses, food scarcity, water shortages, pollution. The
negative socio-economic issues stemming from dirty energy are multitudinous. One of the drivers behind the
uptake of renewable energy is public support and an increasingly educated consumer. Poor energy planning
has left the domestic consumer picking up the tab directly through the steep rise in energy tariffs and
indirectly through taxes. Conscientising the public about the benefits renewable energy boosts the uptake of
renewable energy at a residential and commercial level. It also provides consumers with a foothold to lobby
government for more renewable energy and less coal, nuclear and fracking.
Who is the festival goer?
General public with a focus on families
NGOs, Community Based Organisations and government
Educational institutions including schools and universities
People/Learners from disadvantaged areas
Renewable energy and energy efficiency based businesses and services
“Wonderful people gathered for a common cause, to share and to have fun……the renewable energy industry is ready to deliver to a burgeoning market and that market is ready to exercise the
power of choice…….the sun is raining money!”

Communicating solutions through the festival
The festival will inform people about the need for a transition to a low carbon and clean energy economy. It will showcase current solutions through varied marketing and interactive communications such as:
Exhibitions – companies and individuals who have products and services in the ever increasing renewable
energy market will be available, as well as those who showcase the very latest in renewable energy technology. Community based and non-governmental organisations will also participate in the exhibition in showing live projects that are successful.
Forums – we welcome the public to engage with us and discuss what matters to them around the hot topic of
renewable energy. This year, the festival attracted thought leaders, academics, media personnel, government and activists who openly shared their knowledge at the festival.
Entertainment on the big stage - this year will bring the public more information based upon feedback from the public on the 2014 event. The festival has a large outdoor stage for entertainment like live comedy, great prize give-aways, and top South African bands who believe strongly in renewable energy!
The Renewable Market – an array of eco-friendly businesses, entrepreneurs and craftspeople from across
the Cape will have their products and services on sale for purchase.
As powerful change agents, local schools will also take part in the festival to learn about the importance of
ensuring a renewable energy powered tomorrow.
Perfect weather, positive atmosphere, informative, enjoyable entertainment. I appreciated that there were different interesting talks one could attend with various speakers. I’m looking forward to
RE Festival 2 already!

Description of the event
1) One day festival on 28 March 2015 offering free entry to the public.
2) The principal organisers are WWF South Africa and the AIDC
3) The festival is an integral part of WWF’s Seize Your Power Campaign and the One Million Climate Jobs
campaign.
4) The festival arises out of the need to promote public awareness around the looming crises around energy,
climate change and unemployment in South Africa and to promote a holistic solution to address these
developmental challenges.
5) The festival will have the following attributes:
a. The public will be engaged via a 6 month through-the-line marketing campaign conceptualised and
managed by a professional marketing and PR agency.
i. Attractive mobile marketing solutions can be discussed, online marketing agency Ogilvy Neo will
execute
b. Participant organisations will use the Festival to generate support for their causes, products and or
services and to network across the metropole and more widely.
c. The REF will be professionally managed by professional events management company – Hotshots
Events Management
d. The REF will incorporate the following elements
i. Exhibits including a market place and exhibitions
ii. Installations of visual art and scientific displays
iii. Forums for conversation and debate
iv. Live performance by artists – comedy and music
v. Prize giveaways on stage by popular South African DJ
vi. Chill out space and food market

viii. Fun and engaging activations inspiring the public to support the uptake of RE
“the festival was a great success, and I found it most interesting. It was most encouraging to see young folk taking a deep interest in events. A must for an annual event….Congratulations to those that organised it, and sponsors as well.”
4
“I thought the variety of food stalls was fantastic, the layout of the display areas worked well, and the music/entertainment was really, really enjoyable. I can’t wait for next year’s event!”
REF 2014 – success stories Our initial objective was to educate, entertain and inform 2000 citizens. Instead we saw a staggering 6500
members of the public from all walks of life attend the festival.
The park itself is on public transport lines, and to maximise access we also arranged transport for 350
community group members and about 350 learners from disadvantaged schools’ environmental clubs.
A strategic media campaign was actioned and as a result the festival was featured on SABC stations and
programmes, ENCA weather live broadcast, radio, online media, community newspapers and magazines along
with a street poster campaign and flyers in taxi ranks on low income areas.
Festival goers flocked to exhibitions showcasing the work of universities and NGOs, renewable energy
businesses and products which were informative, interactive, and engaging. In the spirit of walking the talk,
90% of the festival was powered by solar PV. Visitors could also browse and buy a selection low footprint
crafts, or chill out in the food court or at the mini film festival featuring documentaries about climate change
and renewable energy.
For the more information hungry, three forums provided people with the opportunity to participate in public
debate with key decision makers, and to learn more about aspects of RE.
Entertainment was a very important binding factor in the festival ambience – festival goers were treated to
comedy by Nik Rabinowitz, the Two Oceans Aquarium puppet show for the little ones; KFM DJ Rob Vember
kept the crowd on its toes, and handed out prizes which included a grand prize of a solar water heater; the
Gugulethu Tenors, Matthew Gold and the Kiffness and Hotwater rocked the crowd out until closing.

“Get your brand
behind the next energy
revolution” The power of partnership
Working together to achieve the festival vision requires working with many different stakeholders. The City of
Cape Town, community based organisations, schools, universities, NGOs and business participated in the
festival last year. In 2015, we will ramp up the amount of participants with the view to increasing the festival’s
impact, and in order to ensure long term sustainability.
We’d like to invite partners from renewable energy companies, NGOs, tertiary education institutions schools
to participate in the following ways:
Sponsor – in kind or monetary
Exhibit your programme, product, service
Create an activation at the festival - i.e. bicycle powered TV, RE powered smoothie maker!
Positive brand association
Our sponsorship and exhibition packages are designed to offer you as a sponsor maximum exposure in return for your investment. We have taken great care and effort in crafting an attractive brand identity and marketing campaign behind the festival to encourage a diverse, representative audience, thus making it more appealing for sponsors and partners. The REF brand and marketing represents the new, leading engagement platform in renewable energy solutions and the active promotion of a cleaner and socially just environment. Sponsors have the incredible opportunity to associate their own brands with this dynamic festival and the thought leaders participating in it.

About the marketing campaign
We’ve employed a top events marketing and public relations organisation Hotshot Events Management, and
the campaign will be conceptualised to roll out a provincial and nationally to ensure brand recognition and
mass public awareness.
The marketing campaign will begin in mid-December 2014 and will build steadily until March 2015. It will
contain sponsors’ information in press releases, event listings and interviews. As a new festival, we are more
than willing to create a mutually beneficial partnership with any sponsor and so your ideas are most welcome
to compliment the current marketing strategy and implementation. The campaign will target both traditional
and digital media platforms.
Choose from the following attractive exhibitor packages, sponsorship tiers and packages, or get
in touch to customise a unique sponsorship opportunity for your brand.

OPTION 4 – INVEST IN PEOPLE POWER
The REF wishes to install an energy activation to physically demonstrate how putting power in the hands of the people leads to a cleaner environment and overall wellbeing. The sponsor will be entirely responsible for the transport of, management and overall running of the activation on site. Our idea is to have 6 people cycling to power equipment. The activation must be hugely interactive and we will target celebrities to launch the activation.

Sponsorship packages OPTION 5 –- INTRODUCE PEOPLE TO YOUR BRAND: SPONSOR
ATTRACTIVE PRIZES
The purpose of prizes is to foster more awareness of renewable energy products and services. The spirit of an abundant festival, we would love to offer plenty of give-aways and prizes to entice visitors and participants. It is important that the event is as consumer friendly as possible to attract a significant audience - credible prizes are an ideal way in which to attain this. Prizes will be handed out based on people’s participation (including media) and to the best exhibition stand. We are looking for sponsors to provide fantastic prizes that are of value to both children and adults.
There is also the opportunity to work with us to create two mobile surveys which will
a) attract people to the festival b) encourage them to interact with your brand through a prize giveaway mechanism on the day of the
festival c) let them tell us how they feel about renewable energy and your brand.
In summary we need prizes for
• General Give-aways on main stage throughout the day • Best exhibitor • Small Gifts for approx. 50 media personnel
RETURN ON INVESTMENT
• Brand shout out by top level DJ (last year we had KFM’s Rob Vember)
• Last year’s main prize – a solar water geyser – was presented by top band Hotwater
• 8000+ exposure to your brand
• Possible radio giveaways in run up marketing.

Exhibition packages People are hungry for local, accessible renewable energy solutions in their domestic and professional
environments.
Last year, exhibition stands were snapped up quickly! Families, campers, renewable energy enthusiasts walked
off with a wealth of knowledge, ideas for how to green their homes and with newly purchased renewable
energy appliances and products.
Take a stand pout and let people know about your campaign, your projects or your products. Get people to
support your cause, buy your product or learn more about climate change, renewable energy and why we
need to keep coal in the hole. Your audience will be 8000 + strong consisting of public, learners and students,
non-profit organisations, government and community based organisations.
The exhibition will be curated to ensure a quality production.
This is a fun, educational and interactive festival and we are looking for the
best exhibitors. Please contact us for more information.
Customise your stand size @ 550 per square metre.
Reduced rates for non-profits and disadvantaged schools, community based
organisations
Got an idea but not sure how to exhibit? Let’s see if we can make it work
