STANDERTON - Dark streets and a crime stricken area compelled Standerton SuperSpar to intervene and approach the Lekwa Munici-pality of Standerton for a so-lution.

The management of Stan-derton SuperSpar opted to provide fuel, personnel and a ‘cherry picker’ which is a small truck with a lift that can reach the bulbs of the lamp poles.

“ET’s Elektries” supplied the vehicle and experienced electricians to help and re-place some bulbs of street lights in Kosmos Park. Mr Henk Pretorius of Lekwa Lo-cal Municipality helped with the project and supplied them with electrical equipment and some light bulbs.

Impala Street and Rooibok Crescent are two streets that were tackled and the reason for this is to use these two streets as an experiment to see whether the wiring inside the lamp posts is still intact and that it can operate for long hours at a time. This will now only serve as an experiment to see whether it is viable to continue with other streets. SuperSpar and the Municipa-lity will then sit and discuss the way forward. To replace the old street lights with new LED lights will cost about R4 000 per unit. JD

Trial for street lights

New street lights were installed in portions of Impala street and Rooibok Crescent as an experiment to see if it will be viable in other streets. Standerton SuperSpar took the initiative and with the help of “ET’s Elektries”, dark and crime stricken areas are now well lit again.

STANDERTON - A Man from Sakhile and his wife died on Friday, 22 April, on the R23 be-tween Greylingstad and Standerton.

The head-on collision happened in the early hours when the couple was tra velling in a Mazda bakkie. It is reported that the couple was on their way to Standerton from Gauteng when the vehi-cle they were travelling in collided head-on with a lorry that was travelling from Standerton to Jo-hannesburg. Although Val SAPS, who attended the scene, could not establish the cause of the accident, it is assumed that one of the vehicles was attempting to overtake close to the barrier line in the misty conditions.

The couple was identified as Mr Nkosana Makhoba, aged 40 and his wife Sibongile Mkhwanazi, who was in her late twenties. They died instantly and the emergency services had to use the jaws-of-life to retrieve their bodies from the wreckage. It is alleged that the driver of the lorry, which was slightly damaged, escaped from the scene. Greylingstad police were not availa-ble to confirm if the runaway driver of the lorry was eventually found or not. The family of the deceased have been officially informed after the bodies were identified.

This man is one of two assailants sought in connection with a house robbery in Kosmos Park where they stole the home owner’s handgun. Their Modus Operandi is to overpower victims and then steal items from their houses. This man is believed to be aged at around 28-30 years and he is of a tall and slender build. He has a dark complexion and has course facial skin.

STANDERTON - A businessman arrived at 09:00 to open his cash loans business on Tuesday, 19 April, in Charl Cilliers Street. Little did he know that thugs were waiting to strike. An anonymous eye witness reported that they were sitting in front of a furniture store with a colleague when the businessman arrived in his car with two assistants inside. He parked the car and as soon as he opened the car door, four unknown men came running toward the car carrying firearms. They pulled him out of the car and ordered him to go down on his knees - the two occupants of the car were also ordered out at gun point.

The occupants of the car were all searched by the

STANDERTON - Police have opened an inquest following the discovery of a man hanging from a tree on Thursday morning, 21 April. Lieutenant Nhlabathi of Standerton SAPS reported that police were called to the scene after a passerby made the shocking discovery. The man who has been identified as the 50-year-old Henry Magubane was originally from Newcastle and in the employment of Earlybird Farms.

According to SAPS there were no visible injuries found on his body and this prompted police to suspect suicide.

Lieutenant Nhlabathi confirmed that an inquest has been opened at the station for investigation. A post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death. The body of the deceased is being kept at the government mortuary at Standerton Hospital. DM

Man found hanging from treeSelfless act of bravery

Mr Machawe Magagula received a certificate for bravery from the principal of Laerskool Jeugkrag for his selfless act of bravery. Magagula drove a bus with the school’s netball players when it was involved in an accident. Magagula kept his cool and prevented any injuries that the children might have sustained.

STANDERTON - The staff and pu-pils of Laerskool Jeugkrag wish to thank Mr Machawe Magagula who works as a driver for MPS tours (Orange Bus Ser-vices).

An accident happened on Friday, 15 April, when the netball girls of Jeugkrag were driving to Volksrust. A vehicle drove straight into the bus and Magagula took control of the situation and did not swerve out. The vehicle was badly dam-aged but the bus of MPS Tours was only slightly damaged on the front.

The principal of Laerskool Jeugkrag, Mr Gerhard Maritz, handed a certificate to Machawe for his brave deed of keep-ing calm under severe circumstances. Mr Magagula had many people in tears when he told the learners that he was only an instrument in God’s hands and that it was actually God who protected him and the learners of Laerskool Jeugkrag. JD

thugs. “When the drama unfolded we both ran inside the furniture shop to take cover,” said the witness.

The witnesses then heard tyres squealing and saw the car driving off, and the occupants were left lying on the ground. The victims told SAPS that they did not suspect anything would happen when they drove into the parking lot that morning. They did not see anybody until they stopped the car.

Lieutenant Nhlabathi said the thugs stole

cash and two cell phones from the victims before they drove off with the car, a C-Class Mercedes which is metallic grey in colour, with registration number HWX 688 MP. An undisclosed amount of cash for use in the cash loans business was in the car. Nobody was injured during the hijacking and unconfirmed reports suggest that two BMWs were seen parked in Charl Cilliers Street.

They too reportedly drove off at one time without anybody taking notice of the registration numbers. Police have appealed to anybody who might have more information to report it at the police station. A case of vehicle hijacking is under investigation. DM

But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” (Luke 13:12)

When you have a need, do you pray or do you plead? Do you begin your prayers with words like, “Please God, please! God, I beg You to have mercy!” Prayers that plead and beg imply that your heavenly Father is not willing to do it. Yet, He is far more gracious and willing to give to you than you are willing to ask, think or imagine. (Ephesians 3:20). He desires above all things that you prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers. (3 John 1:2) In fact, long before you have a need; God has already met that need. Long before you knew you needed a Saviour, He sent His Son to be your Saviour.

This is your God! He is a good God. So when you beg Him for something, you are actually saying that He is reluctant to give and needs to be persuaded strongly before He will move. Yet, He is

not like that. Jesus knew the heart of the Father. When He saw the woman bound with a spirit of infirmity, He did not pray, “Oh Father! She has been suffering for 18 long years! I beseech You, Father, have mercy on her. Please, please heal her!” No, when Jesus saw her, He immediately proclaimed, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity,” because He knew the heart of the Father. He knew that the Father wanted her delivered from her crippling condition. At the end of a church service, I don’t stand and pray, “Oh God, please bless Your people. Oh God, do keep them. Oh God, be ever so gracious to them!” Instead, I proclaim, “The Lord bless you. The Lord keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you!”

Beloved, when you pray, proclaim your healing, protection and provision because your Father’s heart overflows with love for you. And when you declare it, He sanctions it. When you declare it, He establishes it!

partementshoof by dié skool uitgeleef.

VOLKSRUST - Luyanda Ngwenya has done it! This 18-year-old pupil of Hoërskool Volksrust has just qualified as a finalist for the Miss Teen Commonwealth South Africa pageant after a long and intense semi-final round on Saturday, 2 April.

The proceedings were kicked off by interviews held at the Protea Hotel in Wanderers, Johannesburg, where all 41 contestants were gathered and expected to do presentations about what exactly they are doing for their community. According to her coach, Zahnie Harris of Image Models, Ngwenya was very pleased with the exercise as it enabled her to elaborate more about what she has done thus far.

In the end, her charity work around the Volksrust Cares organisation impressed even the organisers of the pageant.

The final stage of the qualifying round involved

the contestants doing ramp modelling which was followed by a round of interviews. It was then announced that Ngwenya has gone through to the finals and that the grand finale will take place on 2 July in Pretoria where the winner will be crowned.

“I want to make the community proud and will do everything in my power to bring the crown home,” Ngwenya exclaimed moments after becoming a finalist, echoing another Volksrust native’s journey to success – Rolene Strauss who was crowned Miss World in 2015.

Ngwenya is the only contestant from Mpumalanga to be part of the pageant and is still expected to continue with her charity work and to obtain more sponsors for her journey. Feel free to like her Facebook page, Luyanda Ngwenya Miss Teen Commonwealth South Africa – Finalist, for the latest updates and behind-the-scenes titbits. DK

STANDERTON AfriForum’s Stander-ton branch launched the second phase of its tree trimming project on 23 April. The first phase of this project was launched on 12 March during which all trees from Stander Street up until Schwickard Street were trimmed seeing as they frequently led to various street lights and electrical wiring being out of order.

During the second phase, those trees in Nelson Mandela Drive preventing street lights from illuminating streets and touch-ing electrical wiring were trimmed. This ac-tion also decreases the chance of electricity interruptions if the wind blows.

The Lekwa Local Municipality neglected these trees on a regular basis, with the con-sequence being that Standerton experienced various electricity interruptions. In total, more than 50 bakkie loads full of rubbish were carted away. “We also intend launch-ing the third phase of this project later in the year, where trees in the diagonal streets will be trimmed,” said Hillel Coetzer, Afri-Forum’s Regional Coordinator for Mpuma-langa West.

STANDERTON - Johan Nel (58), lid van die internasionale Brothers for Life organi-sasie het Donderdag, 21 April, by ‘n be-kende gastehuis in Standerton oornag.

DK
