Last week, The Sun received letters from two of our readers suggesting we carry out a readers’ poll to determine public opinion regarding the proposed building of a new civic theatre in Blenheim.

The Sun has decided this is an excellent idea as, gauging from our readers’ response to date, the proposal appears to be strongly dividing the region, and some readers have even called for a referendum.

The Sun readers’ poll is the next best thing - here is your chance to have your say.

By Celeste LodewykBlenheim’s Anzac Day crowd on Mon-

day was the largest ever, says Marlborough RSA president Geoff Stobie.

This year’s crowd attendance was much higher than last year, strengthening Mr Stobie’s belief that Anzac Day had become family established.

“There are a lot more families and young people attending Anzac Day remembrance services which is fantastic to see, Blenheim’s crowd just exceeded all our expectations.

“Youngsters are actively asking questions and have a good understanding of Anzac Day’s history, this is particularly pleasing to see,” he said.

Anzac Day began in Marlborough with a dawn parade in Picton which was fol-lowed by parades and services in Seddon, Renwick, Spring Creek, Havelock, Rai Valley, Kaikoura and Blenheim.

Luckily for Marlborough, the looming dark weather clouds held off until later that afternoon allowing the public to enjoy the services.

“We were lucky with the weather and in general I think we had a hugely successful day,” Mr Stobie said.

“The singing by Christianna Stewart was magnificent and Lily Sullivan did a wonderful scripture reading at Blenheim, all the services were well received and supported.”

This year’s Marlborough Poppy Appeal has also been a resounding success, and although the final count is yet to be an-nounced it is already looking set to beat last year.

“All funds raised in Marlborough stay in

Marlborough, so looking at the number of collections made over the last few months, it is mind boggling to see how much support has been shown locally, so I wish to extend a big thankyou to the people of Marlborough,” he said.

Easter Sunday trading at Blenheim New World was like a normal Sunday, New World owner Mark Elkington says.

Mark says the supermarket de-cided to break tradition and open its doors on the public holiday to give out-of-town people a chance to stock up on groceries if they needed, but he was not breaking the law.

He told The Sun on Sunday non-essential departments such as liquor, seafood and butchery serveover, and florist were cor-doned off to comply with Labour regulations. However, the public were not stopped from buying items from those areas if they believed it was necessary, with the exception of alcohol.

Mark says several local res-taurants and stall holders from the Classic Fighters Airshow at Omaka came in to the super-market on Sunday to replenish their stocks.

He says the bakery was particu-larly busy and had nearly been cleaned out by early afternoon.

Local shopper Kim Ander-

son told The Sun on Sunday morning she needed to stock up on groceries as she was having a dinner party with extended family that evening.

She says she respects people’s rel igious beliefs but, with the number of visitors in Blenheim during the Easter weekend, people do need to be able to get food.

Two local restaurants told The Sun they were pleased New World had opened as they were in desperate need of sup-plies after busy trading on Friday and Saturday.

A Labour Department inspector took photos of the supermarket on both Thursday and Sunday, which will be part of a report given to government authorities.

Mark says it is likely to be some time before he finds out whether or not the store will be prosecuted.

Staff at Blenheim New World were given the option of working on Sunday and earning time-and-a-half plus a day in lieu, or taking paid leave. Mark says he is grate-ful to the “numerous customers” who offered their support during the weekend.

Picton fire service were called to a Wai-kawa house yesterday afternoon to secure a roof which had blown off for a second time following more strong winds in the area.

A spokesperson for the fire service said the wind had again got under the roof which was initially lifted at 10am yester-day after a twister swept through Picton.

The fire service were being called out to the property when The Sun called just after 2.30pm. The spokesperson said later it was raining heav-ily and the wind was “blowing its guts out”.

Picton volunteer fire-fighters had also helped to secure temporary cover after the first incident.

P i c t o n a n d t h e Marlborough Sounds had been buffeted by winds and rain overnight.

Port Marlborough’s monitors at Shakespeare Bay and Waitohi Wharf measured gusts of 42 and 48.7 knots respectively overnight.

Both interisland ferry companies said ferry crossing of the Cook Strait had not been af-fected.

Local talent and an ex-citing musical line-up, stirred in with a splash of humour is what the audience can expect at next month’s Music Fes-tival, hosted by the Bible Society Action Group at the Wesley Centre.

The festival is being held as a fundraising event by the Bible Society’s Ac-tion Group which, for the month of May is raising funds for the West Indies.

The Bible Society has had a presence in the West Indies since 1809, working to solve prob-lems including poverty, violence and drugs.

Guest artists for the festival include Dave Garnham, John Walding, the Salvation Army Youth Band as well as a stunning performance from Marlborough Girls’ College violinists.

Vicar Steve Allcutt of the Renwick Anglican Community Church will also showcase his performing abilities as MC for the festival.

This will be the third music festival hosted by the Bible Society which has been working for more than 15-years

in different forms of fundraising.“All the money we raise will go

toward the Bible Society’s work in different parts of the world, so we encourage everyone to come along and enjoy what the festival has to offer,” says member Charles van Raalte.

The festival kicks of on May 8 at 2pm and admission is $5 per person and $10 per family.

Hunt for NZ’s Oldest ‘Telly’

A nationwide search is on to find the oldest working television in New Zealand.

Broadcasting Minister Jonathan Coleman launched the ‘Oldest Telly’ Competition last Wednesday, as part of a Going Digital campaign to raise awareness of the looming switchover to digital television.

The winning entry will be converted to digital TV next month ahead of the first switchover in Hawke’s Bay and West Coast in September 2012.

“Digital has changed the way we watch TV, with better reception and sound quality, as well as more chan-nels and features such as onscreen TV

guides,” Dr Coleman says.“It will be great if we can unearth

some examples of the earliest televi-sions and make them digital-ready to show viewers that you don’t need a new TV to receive digital television.”

Dr Coleman says televisions as old as those which broadcast the first moon landing in 1969 or athlete Dick Tayler’s 10,000 metre victory at the 1974 Com-monwealth Games can be converted.

Information about switching to digital TV, and the Oldest Telly com-petition, is available from www.going-digital.co.nz or the free-phone helpline, 0800 838 800.

Move to free up hospital parking

By Damian GeorgeA proposal to free up parking space

at Wairau Hospital is expected to be approved within days, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board [NMDHB] said last Wednesday.

NMDHB communications coordina-tor Susannah Findlay says the board has received many complaints about congested parking in the area and is well aware of the problem.

“There is a proposal being developed to address the issue,” she told The Sun on Wednesday.

“It’s just about finished and we will hopefully be submitting that to the ELT [executive leadership team] in the next couple of days, and we anticipate a very quick turnaround from them.”

Mrs Findlay says the board is look-ing at re-designating staff car parking across the rest of the hospital campus to create more space for parking.

“That’s going to relieve the pressure on the main public carpark and the front of the hospital, and will ensure there is sufficient capacity for the public.

“There is an issue and we want to do something as quickly as possible.”

Currently, vehicles are being forced to park off-road at the hospital site, with many parking under trees and on grass areas.

Mrs Findlay says, with the change in layout at the hospital recently, it is becoming apparent the “overflow” parking area would be better off being used full-time by public vehicles.

Dave Garnham, pictured playing the church organ, will be one of many local performers at the Bible Society’s Music Festival on May 8.

By Celeste LodewykMatt Flight of Betta Electrical in

Blenheim says he was “shocked” by the fail rate of electric blankets that have been brought into the store for testing.

“Out of the first 60 blankets we had come in, one in five electric blankets failed our testing. That’s a shocking ratio which proves why it is important to have them tested regardless of its age,” he says.

In response to recent reports of electric blankets catching fire, Betta Electrical has had large numbers of people bringing in their blankets for testing.

“I think it has given people a wake up call regarding the safety of electric blankets.

“Most faults are hidden from the user and can be caused by elements being bunched by movement of the user as well as broken and exposed wires,” Matt says.

Staff use a three-step testing system.1) Visual; looking for marks, ex-

posed elements and bunching of wires.

If bunching has occurred hot spots are created and the blanket can overheat and catch on fire.

2) Portable Applicance Test; check-ing the continuity of wires.

3) Multimeter Test; checking that the elements and electrical circuit are working correctly.

If the blanket passes all three steps, it receives a sticker which is signed off by the service technician and given an electrical number.

If the blanket fails no sticker is issued and the owner is advised that it is unsafe to be used.

“The worst cases have been where the cord was broken and the wires were exposed.

“The other had bunched elements caused by movement as well as a broken wire inside. This was the most dangerous case we have seen yet,” he says.

Betta Electrical in Blenheim is urg-ing people to have their blankets tested before using them this winter, and are offering a reduced testing rate of $10 per blanket.

Clear new road signs which direct traffic to the ferry check-in points and to Picton’s town centre are being erected, the result of collaboration between community and business interests.

The Picton Business Group has been campaigning for better directions so visitors could more easily locate the town’s shopping area and its facilities and Picton’s tourist attractions. The Marlborough District Council’s recent Growth and Development Strategy project confirmed the need for improvements.

The cost of the 16 signs has been shared between the Council, NZTA, Port Marlborough and the two ferry services, Bluebridge and the Interislander.

“The important thing is that the designers have been able to simplify and streamline the content of the existing signs so it should be much easier to read them – and for visitors to find their way around,” said Mayor Alistair Sowman.

“I look forward to an upgrade of some of the older town signs before too much longer.”

Ideas about how the new signs should look emerged from the work the District Council has done with Urbanism+ as part of the growth strategy for Picton. A working group including representatives from Destina-tion Marlborough, Port Marlborough, Interislander, Picton Business Group, Marlborough Chamber of Commerce, Picton’s Rugby World Cup organising committee and Marlborough Roads then worked with RTL Signs to produce the final design.

Dear EditorIn regard to the Mayor’s reply to Derek Bate in

your Monday 23rd issue.Being a democracy it is not the right of the

Mayor and councillors to make decisions on issues apart from providing normal core services.

They were elected to do what the people decide. It is the responsibility of councillors to be good stewards of the community and to make issues widely known to make submissions to the council (this is not expensive) and of those who respond, act on the majority.

This has not been happening in the past! We are under democracy, not dictatorship.

Yours sincerely Ken Lawrence, Secretary Marlborough Concerned Citizens Inc.

Dear Ed,I was interested to read Tony Girling’s

letter of March 30. It is easy to mock Christianity from a position of material security and arrogant self-belief, so did the religious leaders to Jesus as He hung on the cross paying the penalty for mankind’s transgressions. The bible has 300 prophecies concerning Jesus, all but a handful have been fulfilled so His return is imminent. He died

as a sacrifice, rose from the dead and returned to heaven. To all who believe in Him and invite Him into their lives, He offers reconciliation with God and eternal life. He is coming back as Judge. We have the choice - accept or reject. The bible says ‘the fool has said in his heart there is no God! God invites us to consider the reality of our existence’ - Romans 1, v 20-22.

Dear Ed,For a hundred years motorists parked correctly,

on the correct side of the road and did not park for hours across the footpath. Perhaps full licence should not be issued until this basic discipline is learned and the drivers get the use of their legs back again. I drove for 75years, no tickets, no accidents (some luck involved).

When walking through the streets of Blenheim, it is not uncommon for people to stop local woman Joan Bottom to ask; “Where have you just got back from and where are you planning to travel to next”.

In fact most people would be tempted to ask the sprightly 82-year-old to share a story from her many travels and achieve-ments throughout the years, because from the twinkle in her eye and unbroken smile on her lips she comes across as a woman with many tales to tell.

“Many people have come to know me as a traveller, I guess you could say I was born under a wandering star,” she smiles.

You may be imagining a woman of Joan’s age travelling the world by tour bus, but in fact she does quite the opposite.

During her trip to Canada, America, Eng-land and China last year, Joan decided to break away from her travel group and walk the Great Wall of China alone. Walking over 2000m over uneven steps, Joan says the 40 degree heat and 90 percent humidity was nothing compared to the breathtaking views and thrill of the experience.

“It was incredible, especially when people I didn’t know came up to me afterwards

with their thumbs up to congratulate me,” she says.

Joan’s travels have taken her right around the globe, but she insists that she isn’t ready to stop yet.

“I have travelled to most places but I haven’t visited Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Vietnam or Cambodia so they are definitely on my list to go see,” she says.

During the past four-years Joan has travelled with the Friendship Force, an organisation aimed at fostering peace and understanding throughout the world by means of personal contacts and shared experiences through home hosting.

Joan is leaving tomorrow for her fourth trip with Friendship Force travelling through South America.

“I am thinking about continuing on alone after the trip ends to visit Italy and Greece, but we will see where the wind takes me,” she laughs.

To keep herself fit for her many adven-tures Joan regularly attends Curves gym three times a week and recently received a certificate for 500 visits.

“I could have visited the gym more but I am away so often. Keeping active has ena-

bled me to carry on travelling into my 80’s, I was even playing hockey right up until I was 54-years-old,” she adds with a grin.

When Joan is home she is rarely idle. Most days are pre-organised with her silversmith classes learn-ing to make pieces of jewellery which she enters into national competitions, attending the Rock and Mineral Club and of course - planning for her next big adventure.

“Life is for living and enjoying so I laugh a lot, talk a lot, work hard and make the most out of every day.

“I am coming up 83-years of age but I believe that no mat-ter how old you are you should strive to take up a new challenge,” she says smiling.

The Learning Connexion teaches sustainable creativity through art making.

They are a tertiary art and creativity school with facilities across all fine and contemporary art mediums – from video to bronze-casting, computers to painting.

The overall goal of our course is to achieve sustainable creativ-ity for every student. Anyone can study at The Learning Connex-ion. They offer a university level, NZQA approved course – the key requirement is commitment.

CoursesWe offer the Diploma of Art

and Creativity (Honours) and an Advanced Diploma of Art and Creativity.

The Diploma of Art and Crea-tivity (Honours) is a two and a half year full time course or a five year part time course.

Students start at the Founda-tion level, learning about basic technical and creative skills and then move on to more independ-ent projects at Stage One and Stage Two levels before gradu-ation. Students learn by doing.

All our classes a r e h a n d s -o n , g i v i n g students real skills they can apply immedi-ately. The aim is to empower students by drawing out,

rather than stuffing information in.

Our Stage Three Advanced Diploma is a one year full time or two year part time course that builds on the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Honours) - but is open to students who have completed equivalent work else-where. The Advanced Diploma is a studio based intensive that embraces all media and focuses on materials and processes, where the practice is the theory.

Across all our courses, our main aims for our students are:

• To develop a thorough grounding in fine arts

• To demonstrate through art an understanding of the princi-ples of creativity

• To achieve sustainable art/creativity

If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right!

The pathway to a successful careerEDUCATION

Early childhood education is a rewarding career. Rangi Ruru Early Childhood College offers campus-based programmes in nanny education and early childhood teaching.

Early childhood studies with meaning

Rangi Ruru Early Childhood College, located in Christchurch is a small tertiary college offering campus-based programmes in nanny education and early child-hood teaching.

Both study programmes provide students’ with opportunities to integrate their theoretical lean-ing with hands-on experiences, within the College and in the wider community.

A close association with the on-site early childhood centre allows students to work with the children on a regular basis.

The three-year Diploma of Teaching programme incor-porates 42 weeks of practical placements in early childhood settings, including home place-

ments during the first year. A student explains; “We learn so

much through placements, and it is easier to put theory into practice as I can experience what I have learnt in class.”

Our students comment that the study environment and the focus on collaborative learning appeals. As one student describes; “The tutors really care, we have more individual time due to the smaller class sizes and we are so supported in our learning.”

The two qualifications offered at Rangi Ruru Early Childhood College are a one-year Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care, incorporating the New Zealand Certificate in Nanny Education, and a three-year Di-

ploma of Teaching (ECE).Students who successfully com-

plete the one-year qualification can apply to staircase into Year 2 of the teaching diploma.

A teaching student who com-pleted her studies comments; “If you have the passion and com-mitment, this qualification opens doors to exciting employment prospects.”

Further information is available from the College, and visitors are welcome to view our facilities and meet staff and students. We can be contacted on (03) 983-3747, www.rangiruru.ac.nz or [email protected].

Our Open Day is Monday May 23, 2011 from 2-6 pm.

Influenza 2011

If you have f lu-like symptoms, stay at home until essentially well as it is sneezing and coughing that spreads the virus.

This is usually around three to four days after symptoms start, but may be up to a week.

Here is some advice from the Ministry of Health of what to do if you have the flu.

• Stay home and let a relative or friend know if you are at home alone. Rest in a separate room that has good ventilation and is away from other members of the household.

• Don’t share anything that may spread flu.

• Drink small amounts of fluids often and keep your mouth clean and moist by cleaning your teeth regu-larly.

• Take medication that relieve pain and fever, eg, paracetamol or ibuprofen. (Aspirin-type medications should not be used for chil-dren and young people.)

• Gargle with a glass of warm water and/or suck on sugarless hard sweets or lozenges for sore throats.

• Use saline drops, nasal spray or decongestants for soothing and clearing the nose and keep bedding and nightwear clean and dry if you are in bed.

• Shower or bath regularly, or use a cloth to wash with warm water and soap and make sure you wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds, drying them well afterwards or use antiseptic rubs.

• Apply skin balm or moisturiser to prevent your

lips, nose and surrounding skin from drying out and cracking.

If you don’t feel like eating or drinking:

• Try light fluid-type nu-tritional snacks such as chicken soup or perhaps yoghurt but don’t worry if you can’t handle food, keep taking fluids, try an ice block or jelly.

If your condition worsens:

Seek medical advice by PHONING Healthline 0800 611 116 or your healthcare provider.

Duck L’Orange (serves 2)Ingredients:1/8 cup granulated sugar1 tbsp water1/2 tbsp apple cider vinegar1/2 tbsp red wine3/4 cup fresh-squeezed orange juice1 tbsp onion, minced3/4 cup low-sodium chicken stock1 large orange, sections cut from membranes2 duck legs, seasoned with salt and pepper3 tbsp unsalted butter1 tbsp orange zest, plus more for garnishchopped green onions or chives for garnish

Directions:1. Combine the sugar and water in

a small saucepan. Boil on high heat for several minutes, until the syrup caramelizes and turns a golden brown color. (I have to admit I had trouble with this step because my saucepan was a bit big, so the water kept boiling off and leaving me with sugar crystals. Use a small saucepan or double the amounts of sugar and water and simply just use half the syrup for the sauce). I ended up just using my syrup that had not caramelized, having only turned a light

tinge of yellow, and it came out just fine.2. Add the vinegar, wine, orange juice

and onions. The liquid will bubble vigorously at first. Stir well and boil until 1/4 cup of liquid remains.

3. Add chicken stock and boil until the sauce is reduced to 1/3 cup volume. Remove from heat and stir in orange zest. Set aside until just before serving. This sauce can be made ahead of time. When it is ready to be served, add butter and warm up on medium heat, stirring to melt and incorporate butter. Gently stir in orange segments.

4. Meanwhile, prepare duck legs for cooking. Score duck skin with a knife just through the skin layer. Season with salt and pepper. Over high heat in a very lightly oiled skillet, sear the duck legs about 10 min-utes on each side, rotating as needed to obtain an evenly cooked leg. If needed, finish cooking duck in a 350 degree oven to prevent outside from over-cooking.

5. Rest duck legs for 10 minutes on a cutting board, then slice through meat before plating. Drizzle with warmed sauce and garnish with extra orange zest and green onions. Reserve remaining sauce in a sauce terrine on the side to use as needed.

Opening day this year is 7th May.

Remember that shotguns are lethal at short range.

Even at more than 100 metres, some shotgun pellets can cause serious harm, for example to eyes.

Avoid low shots to protect other hunters, both from direct shots and ricochets.

Shotguns should be ‘broken’ and unloaded when moving over rough country and fence lines, and when moving in and out of vehicles.

Hunters should signal any change of position to other hunt-ers by word or gesture.

Shotgun blasts are very loud and can cause hearing damage, so an increasing number of hunters wear hearing protection.

Be safe with shotguns

Protect yourself and your baby

Getting the seasonal influenza vaccination is an important way to protect against the common strains of influenza that are likely to be circulating this year.

Talk with your midwife or doctor about getting a seasonal influenza vaccination. Influenza immunisation for pregnant women has clear benefits for both mother and baby. Mothers who receive the influenza vaccine while pregnant are able to pass protection on to their baby. The vaccine offers protec-tion to infants who would normally be too young (under six months) to receive immunisation individually.

What should I do if I get sick?If you get sick with influenza-like symptoms, stay home, stay

away from others, and call your midwife or doctor right away.If needed, he or she may prescribe an antiviral medicine that

treats influenza. Have someone check in with you often if you are feeling ill. This is always a good idea.

How should I feed my baby if I am sick?If you can, breastfeed. Breast milk is the perfect food for

your baby. There are many ways that breastfeeding and breast milk helps to protect your baby’s health.

Protect yourself and your unborn child; speak to your midwife or doctor today about getting the seasonal influenza vaccine. For more information visit www.moh.co.nz

Q – “What does it mean in Hebrews 4:13 when it says that Jesus is, “him with whom we have to do”? (CS – Blenheim)

A – This is a reference to you standing before God and one day giving an account!

The passage in total reads, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart; Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” Many of the fine folks of Blenheim don’t want anything “to do” with God or Jesus or the Bible. Unfortunately for them, the Bible says that one day all men will “have to do” with God Almighty – he will not be ignored. This is a case were context is vital to understanding and answering the question. Verse 11 speaks of our faithfulness as Christians – we should be laboring to enter our eternal rest or heaven. This is not speaking about working for our salvation, but working for Christ because we are saved. Arriving in heaven with God being able to say to us, “Well done thou good and faithful servant…” Verse 12 mentions the power of the Bible and its ability to discern the true heart motives behind our works. The works of all true believers will one day be examined (I Cor. 3:13) – rewards will be granted for faithfulness and works humbly done with the right motive. The works of all unbelievers will also be examined at the Great White Throne judgment – works can not keep you out of hell, but they will be used to determine the degree of punishment in eternity. (Rev. 20:10-15) Verse 13 speaks of the eyes of Christ that are like a flame of fire (Rev. 19:12) that can instantly see through all the pretense and falsehood of man. Our heart and all our actions will be completely open and exposed before the eyes of our Saviour before whom we must all stand – this is the sense of the phrase you ask about. Knowing that we must all stand before Christ, 1) if you are not saved, be smart and trust in Jesus today as your Saviour; if you are saved, serve Christ faithfully as “every one of us shall give account of himself to God.” (Rom. 14:12)

3 Rounds 1st May,

29th May, 19th June

By Celeste LodewykA group of 16 hard working

and eager Marlborough Boys’ College students are looking for work to help raise $6000 for up and coming class trips.

The boys are from Room 2, a special education unit for stu-dents with learning difficulties.

With two planned class trips fast approaching, the boys have already begun working to earn their money by collecting sheep pellets and selling them by the bag, and are actively looking for more work.

To help the boys a fundrais-ing committee has been set up comprising of parents and special education teacher Ann McNicholl.

Head of the committee is Lloyd James whose aim is one of many working hard behind the scenes to help fundraise so the boys can enjoy annual trips and activities.

“We are simply a group of parents trying to carry on the great work of the room’s teacher, Ann who has been working so hard to cover the costs of

sports and cultural trips.“We are also hoping to take the boys

skiing during winter and on a cultural trip to Wellington to visit museums,” he says.

Instead of asking for donations, Lloyd says they are appealing to local businesses to provide some employ-ment for the boys so they earn the

money themselves.“We want the boys to raise as much

money themselves through their own hard work, so if you can help us out it would be greatly appreciated,” he says.

If you are able to offer some em-ployment to the boys, contact Ann McNicholl at MBC on 578 0119 (Extn 2058).

HARD WORKERS: Marlborough Boys’ College Room 2 students Henry Shaw, Joshua Te Kahika, Jack Cranston, Ryan James, Jack Boyce are seeking work to help fundraise for future class trips.

A film festival with a difference opens in Renwick next month, the first of its kind for the region.

The Renwick Playcentre Film Festival features four films screen-ing throughout the month of May, all new to the Blenheim area.

The family-oriented screen-ings are part of a film festival that is helping to raise money

for the Renwick Playcentre, a parent-run education centre for pre-schoolers.

The films showing are Queen of the Sun, an American documen-tary released this month about the plight of the honeybee that features several South Island beekeepers; Sam Hunt: Purple Balloon and Other Stories, de-

scribed as a darker Topp Twins (opening nationwide at the end of May); This Way of Life, the Oscar-shortlisted film that follows the Karena family (and will be showing twice due to demand) and from the same filmmakers comes One Man, One Cow, One Planet, a multi award-winning celebration of biodynamic gardening through the eyes of an 80-year-old Kiwi in India.

By Damian GeorgeA proposed six-a-side second-

ary school hockey competition in Marlborough could become a full 11-a-side tournament if the surge in player numbers continues.

Hockey Marlborough develop-ment officer Brent Edwards says there has been a “massive increase” in interest from local players ahead of the 2011 season starting next month, and the 11-a-side mixed tournament is a real possibility.

“The early indications are that we might have the numbers to do that,” he says.

“We have 35 players at the mo-ment, which is enough for five six-a-side teams, but we would ideally like to get that number to 50 or 60 so we can have four full teams.”

The local competition will mostly feature players from Marlborough Boys’ College, Marlborough Girls’ College and Queen Charlotte College.

Junior numbers are also up significantly from last year, with

some grades ini-tially scheduled to be played on Mon-day nights having to be bumped to the following day.

Brett says one of the major changes to the junior for-mat this year is reducing teams to primarily six players, as op-posed to a mix of six, eight, and 11-a-side teams, which will help to get players more involved in the game.

“Last year we established we had a few problems,” Brett says.

“Our numbers weren’t great, although we had a good core group of people.

“We’ve made a whole lot of changes this year.”

This season will also feature a new Division 1 competition (formerly known as the presi-dents’ grade), involving five women’s and four men’s teams,

while the two men’s premier sides and women’s premier side will be involved in an expanded Nelson competition.

Brett says further changes are on the cards for 2012 as well.

“Next year want to create an under-17 competition.

“That’s why we’re creating a secondary school competition

this year - to get the numbers up first.”

Hockey Marlborough 2011 Format:

Junior: Year 1 and 2 - Saturday; Year 3-6 - Monday; Year 7-8 - Tuesday (starts May 7,9 and 10)

Mixed Secondary School: Wednesday (starts May 11)

Premier: Men’s and Women’s - Saturdays (starts May 7)

Division 1: Women’s - Thurs-day; Men’s - Friday (starts May 5 and 6).

23SunThe Sun sport Wednesday April 27, 2011

The Highlanders unlikely run in the Super 15 rugby compet it ion was widely expected to end on Saturday, when they came up against a red-hot Crusaders outfit in Nelson.

The implications of an inevitable loss for the men from the deep south centred around what impact it would have on their season, and whether they were able to finish close enough to the Crusaders juggernaut to gain a bonus point.

But what unfolded was more than Otago rugby fans could have expected. The run didn’t end; it gathered momentum. So much so that it has now

catapulted the Highlanders from their ‘surprise package making a quick start out of the blocks’ status to one of ‘genuine title contender’.

That might sound a bit like the mindset of an excited fan getting carried away with a monumental victory, but this achievement confirms beyond doubt the Highlanders are the real deal.

Until now, they had not beaten a side ranked higher than eighth - the Hurricanes, Chiefs, Bulls, Cheetahs, Brumbies and Rebels among their victims. Some would say the Crusaders were depleted. Those people would do well to remember the

Highlanders were without J i m m y C ow a n , A d a m Thompson, Alando Soaoki, Kade Poki and Shaun Treeby.

The key is the way the Highlanders are winning: they have “out-passioned” teams, blown the opposition off the ball at the ruck, defended like their lives depend on it, and attacked with enterprise and confidence. That they were able to do all those things against the might of the Crusaders puts them firmly in title contention in 2011.

Airshow delivers despite weather

V FOR VICTORY: Sir Peter Jackson takes time out with ‘Sir Winston Churchill’ aka Graham Lindsay at Classic Fighters over the weekend. Inset: A rare Focke-Wulf Fw190 in action on Friday.

Sir Peter Jackson took a break from filming his Lord of the Rings, to attend the 10th anniversary of the Classic Fighters Airshow in Blenheim over Easter.

The theme for this year’s three-day show was “V for Victory”, symbolised by English Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s victory sign from WW2.

Sir Peter is a regular spectator and occa-sionally gets more involved in the theatrics at the fundraiser for the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.

This year, he has once again been very generous, putting his private collection of WW1 aircraft on display at the airshow and the centre’s museum.

Sir Peter Jackson’s collection is considered by aviation enthusiasts to be one of the best in the world.

The airshow is held every second year and sees replica and original aircraft from WW1 and WW2 take to the skies during the festival.

This year’s show saw two Spitfires and a rare Focke-Wulf Fw190 from WW2 take part.

A replica 1916 Albatross, (pictured far left) from WW1, was the oldest seen at this year’s show.

The show attracts huge crowds over Easter. The 2009 event attracted 35,000 people and this year, with the weather proving to be a dampener, organisers expected numbers to be slightly down. Photos by Les Whiteside
