Establish a committee to promote collaboration between research groups and institutes and formulate policy for

Nuclear Physics in Europe

NuPECC : established in 1988-1989

Became an Associated Committee of ESF

Now an Expert Committee of ESF


The mission of NuPECC is:

To strengthen European collaboration in nuclear science and to promote nuclear physics and its trans-disciplinary use and application in collaborative ventures between research groups within Europe and particularly those from countries linked to ESF.

NuPECC is supported by its Subscribing Institutions, Member Organisations of ESF involved in nuclear science research.


In pursuing its objective NuPECC:

• defines a network of complementary facilities within Europe and encourage optimisation of their usage; • provides a forum for the discussion of the provision of future facilities and instrumentation; and • provides advice and make recommendations to the ESF and to other bodies on the development, organisation, and support of European nuclear research and of particular projects.


Most European countries are now represented in NuPECC


NuPECC has from the outset strived to establish a network of complementary facilities within Europe. It published the Handbook

“International Access to Nuclear

Physics Facilities in Europe” already in 5th edition (2004).


NuPECC provided a forum to discuss developing fields, projects and programmes in Nuclear Physics. Publications

Reports from working groups Nuclear Physics News, a quarterly magazine for

the community. Long-Range Plans (LRPs) [Forward Looks].

1st LRP in November 1991: “Nuclear Physics in Europe: Opportunities and Perspectives”

2nd LRP in December 1997: “Nuclear Physics in Europe: Highlights and Opportunities”

In April 2004 NuPECC published it 3rd LRP

Based on group reports representing all active fields of nuclear physics(bottom-up approach)

Preceded byTown Meeting at GSI,30 January-1 February 2003 to present the reports, discuss conclusions and formulate recommendations.

LRP2004 addressed six subfields in Nuclear Physics and considered all construction and upgrade projects of facilities.

1. NuPECC recommends the full exploitation of the existing and competitive lepton, proton, stable-isotope and radioactive-ion beam facilities and instrumentation


22. NuPECC strongly recommends the timely completion of the ALICE detector to allow early and full exploitation at the start of LHC.

3. NuPECC recommends that efforts should be undertaken to strengthen local theory groups in order to guarantee the theory development needed to address the challenges that exist or may arise from new experimental observations; important role for ECT*.

4. NuPECC recommends that efforts to increase literacy in nuclear science among the general public should be intensified.

NuPECC submission and presentation of Roadmap to ESFRI was crucial and heavily influenced the process. FAIR: Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research SPIRAL 2: Système de Production d’Ions Radioactifs

NuPECC is internationally active. It is invited: to be on OECD Global Science Forum, and IUPAP nuclear physics working groups. Exchange/contacts with NSAC (Future JSPS?)


NuPECC defined a network of Large-Scale Facilities (LSF) /Research Infrastructures (RI) and coordinated and endorsed the applications of the nuclear physics community within the 4th, 5th and 6th Framework Programmes. The networks supported by EC:

In Nuclear Physics and Related Areas

Institutional member of the European ScienceFoundation Expert Committee, NuPECC


The Goals of ECT* a) to arrange in-depth research on topical problems at the

forefront of contemporary developments in theoretical nuclear physics,

b) to foster interdisciplinary contacts between nuclear physics and neighbouring fields such as particle physics, astrophysics, condensed matter physics and the quantal physics of small systems,

c) to encourage talented young physicists by arranging for them to participate in the activities of the ECT*, by organising training programmes and establishing networks of active young researchers,

d) to strengthen the interaction between theoretical and experimental studies.


Scientific activities at ECT*- International workshops and collaboration meetings (19 weeks in 2006)- Doctoral training programmes (4)- Visiting scientists (about 20 months)- Postoctoral programme (about a dozen postdocs- Local research (ECT*, Trento Univ., BEC)- Teraflop cluster (BEN); fully operational & open to external users

Secondary sponsors:In 2006, total contribution received from countries other than France, Germany and Italy (less than 10) is altogether less than 100 K€. EC I3 EURONS (~ 100 K€)
