This year’s festival features eleven internationally acclaimed films touching on several

themes: the Holocaust and its aftermath; Israeli/Palestinian relations; modern Israeli

culture; and international intrigue and immigration. On three nights, we will present

double features and screenings will be followed by speakers.

An Irish/Jewish film with an international feel, the beauty of the story lies in its simplicity, humor, and the universal desire to fit in.

Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem Wednesday, March 25; 7:30 pm Drama | Israel/German/France 2014; Directors: Ronit Elkabets, Shlomi Elkabetz Language: Hebrew w/English subtitles; 115 min.

A powerful drama, this is the story of Viviane Amsalem’s five year fight to obtain a divorce in front of the only legal authority competent for divorce cases in Israel, the Rabbinical Court. Viviane and her lawyer must face the uncompromising attitude of Elisha, the husband, who does not respond to the rabbis’ convocations. When he is finally obliged to come to court, he keeps refusing the divorce (Gett) even though they’ve been separated for years.

Uri, a young officer, together with two soldiers under his command, are manning a checkpoint in the territories. Two women from the “Watch” organization are monitoring their work. Uri is confused when he receives an order to close the checkpoint because of a bomb threat. Pressure rises as a number of unpredictable events unfold simultaneously, and Uri is faced with some difficult ethical decisions.

In 1948, a group of World War II pilots, mostly from America, volunteered to fight for Israel in the War of Independence. As members of “Machal” - volunteers from abroad - this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war, preventing the possible annihilation of Israel at the very moment of its birth; they also laid the groundwork for the Israeli Air Force.

Between the years 1950-51 nearly 130,000 Jews left Iraq, and the most ancient community in the world ceased to exist. Farewell Baghdad tells the story of the Jewish community in the Iraqi capital on the eve of the State of Israel’s establishment, and the way Jewish families and heads of the Jewish underground dealt with the authorities’ hostility.
