FROM THE COMMANDER:

This has been a busy summer! The new Post 9401 elected officers and appointed members have begun working on our next year of events as well as carrying out the many routine tasks that must always be done to keep the Post ‘humming along’.

The city held an event at the Aquatic Center to honor military veterans and first responders. The Post sponsored a Sunday breakfast to recognize Korean veterans and their spouses. With the support of Jim Mack, Men’s Auxiliary, the Post hosted a fundraiser for Thunderbolt Middle School and Lake Havasu High School to support their football programs; they raised over $1,000.00! We participated in a ‘Thank You for Your Service’ ceremony in conjunction with other veteran organizations to salute two active duty U.S. Army soldiers, PFC Joshua Dutton and SPC Christian King, upon their return from Kuwait. The first Mohave County class from the Western Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy (WALETA) graduated an outstanding group of men in the Military Police Transition Training Program; the course takes into consideration the veterans’ military experience, which allows a shorter study course.

BECAUSE OUR STRENGTH COMES FROM YOU…

The VFW was founded for one, single purpose: to assure those who’ve protected our country are protected in return. This protection comes in the form of programs, standing up for veterans rights in Washington, D.C., and reaching out with help in communities across America. The hard truth is, we can’t do this without your membership and generosity. THANK YOU.

Post 9401 Commander Joan McDermott

Fun at the Post has included the always-friendly competition between the Comrades, Men’s, and Ladies Auxiliaries to raise funds for our veterans at the annual August Celebrity Bartender days. Thank you, Lynda Rodgers, Canteen Manager, and all you VERY PATIENT Post bartenders, for assuring that customers were happy despite the frequently rather ineffective ‘celebrities’ - we needed so many reminders to do our jobs!

I would like to thank the Post for supporting me as I attended my first every National VFW Conference. St. Louis was most welcoming. I learned a great deal and met many people who were willing to share their VFW experiences and knowledge. Guest speakers included Vice President Biden, Missouri Senators Claire McCaskell and Roy Blount, and Sloane Gibson, Acting VA Director. Ryan Crocker was awarded the Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Public Service.

Organizations in Lake Havasu City are working to coordinate events and services for veterans in need. The Veteran’s Court, with Judge Kalauli presiding, has reached out to the community for support to help change the lives of veterans who appear before him. Other veteran groups are meeting to create an informal coalition that will lead to more efficient and comprehensive service to veterans in our area. The city government is acting to coordinate events that recognize our veterans. If you would like to be more involved in these very rewarding activities, please see me or one of our other officers for ways you can help!

On September 11th , the city will again host a ceremony in memory of the events of 9/11/2001. It will begin at 10:00 AM at Wheeler Park.

The annual POW/MIA commemorative ceremony will be held at the Post on September 19th

at 3:00 PM. The ceremony will be open to other veterans and supporters in the community.

Humana will hold a seminar to inform veterans and their families about their medical plans for eligible individuals on Saturday, October 25th.

On October 28th, the Arizona Coalition for Military Families will be presenting a Veterans Navigator Training for up to 50 individuals in the Lake Havasu City community. The goal is to have a representative from each veteran’s organization and from organizations supporting veterans in the course. They will be taught to effectively assist veterans to find the services they need. Please see me if you think you would find it rewarding to work with veterans in need in our city.

We will be holding another car show during the winter season to raise funds for our veterans. If any of our members would like to assist with this fun event, please see me.

QUARTERMASTER’S CORNER

I’m happy to report, that I will be your quartermaster for 2014-2015. Commander Joan has appointed Mike Whittle as the assistant quartermaster to assist me with the Post’s financial functions. If we can be of any assistance, please feel free to contact us. The 2014-2015 year has begun with the installation of our Department Commander, Greg Kozakiewicz (koza-kay-vitch). Our newly elected and appointed Post officers will again manage your post with discretion and leadership. Hopefully, we will experience a major maintenance free year this year. As most of you know, the Post last year acquired a $50,000 loan from Mohave State Bank. This loan is in an independent account and is used for major upgrades to the Post. To date we have installed a new air conditioner, a new Ice machine and a security surveillance system with 12 cameras. As most all are aware, Membership is the major “back bone” of the Post. We would like to see you make your Post “All American” again this year by submitting your dues promptly. I can assure you that your elected and appointed officers will do our part in achieving this goal. Again, the Post still has Red shirts with VFW Post 9401 on the sleeve for sale at $15.00. All are encouraged to wear Red on Fridays in support of our service men and women for their sacrifices. It is extremely rewarding to walk into the Post on Fridays and see the sea of Red Shirts in support of our Troops. Your Canteen Manager, Lynda Rodgers has been very active keeping up with supplying our members, guests, and community with shirts. Let us all remember:

“NOT FOR SELF……BUT FOR THE POST” Yours in Comradeship, Owen Johnston, Quartermaster

… “Please pay your dues so you can continue to enjoy the benefits of membership” …

From Your Senior Vice Commander:

From Your Canteen Manager: Lynda Rodgers Greetings. Not going to mention the heat this time but do wonder if you have been watching Mother Nature's beautiful skies during the last couple of storms. Would like to thank Carrie Bogdanovich for programming our new cash register. It's working great after several of us tried and she nailed it. Even though we will miss her we wish her well on her new journey but she promises to visit often. The LHHS/Thunderbolt football program fund raiser went really well. Would like to thank those who helped: Jim Mack, John Maze, Jewels, Stacy, Frank, Carrie and the two people who cooked the chicken and sausage on the patio, on an extremely hot and sunny afternoon. Sorry, I didn't get their names. Everyone raved about the food (especially the sausages) and we hope helped raise some monies for this program. We are so proud of having two LAVFW Department Officers from our Post: Suzie Gleason, Department President, and Mary Stray-Salisbury, Department Chaplain. With Hilde's chairmanship, Suzie's Department President Homecoming was amazing. Our dining hall was decorated so beautifully you could hardly recognize it. Our staff did an outstanding job and we can be really proud of our Post. Thanks to everyone who helped including Marcia, Ken, Hilde and her committee, and the Young Marines who served our meal. They did an excellent job. We'll be honored again in January 2015 with a visit from our LAVFW National President. Thank you all so very much for participating in our annual Celebrity Guest Bartenders the first three Tuesdays in August. Everyone did a terrific job this year and we raised a lot of money for Veteran's Programs. Special thanks to our volunteer bartenders who gave up their time to come and assist the guest bartenders. A good time was had by all. Check at Post for any additions and/or changes. Also, the pool players are looking for more people to play on Tuesday evenings and Crazy Pool on Sunday afternoons. If you're interested, just show up and see Manny. Looking forward to Fall and hope to see you at the Post. Thanks to all of our members who kept us going all summer – you're the best! And, remember, all of our bartenders are volunteers. God Bless America and God Bless our Troops! .

KITCHEN SCENE (SOUP’S ON)

For the most part your kitchen is running pretty much normal. Our lunches Tuesday through Thursday are starting to pick-up. Our Friday night dinners are doing very well. The Sunday Breakfast Buffet is very well accepted. Folks seem to like what we offer.

One change is our Monday menu. We are now offering hot dogs or chili dogs and, thanks to our #1 Volunteer “Debbie” we now offer homemade salsa and chips.

Looking forward to seeing everyone come into our VFW dining room for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Do it!!
