Le 26 Avril 1963 au matin, la voiture prsidentielle qui amenait les enfantsSimone et Jean-Claude Duvalier l'cole, fut attaque par quatre hommesarms, habills en vert olive. Une lutte s'ensuivit au cours de laquelle plusieurs

hommes de la garde des enfants Duvalier furent tus. La raction contre cetteapparente tentative de kidnapping fut terrible. Un appel tous les macoutes etduvaliristes fut lanc la radio, demandant tous de prendre les armes etannonant quon avait attent la vie des enfants du Prsident. S'instaura unechasse l'homme au hasard des rencontres, tout porteur darmes, partisan dergime ayant permission de tuer. Cette rage meurtrire tait dirige contre desofficiers de l'Arme souponns de comploter contre Duvalier, toutparticulirement le lieutenant Franois Benot, car Duvalier avait dclar qu'iltait l'auteur de l'attentat.( il apparaitra quelque semaines plus tard qu'il n'en

n'tait rien).C'est ainsi que tous les membres de la famille Benoit (et mme de l'avocatBenoit Armand, coupable de son prnom) et tous les membres de la familleEdeline (nom de jeune fille de lpouse du Lieutenant Benoit) seront ce jour-l,et mme longtemps aprs, traqus et abattus. Certains sbires profitent del'occasion pour liminer des personnes afin de s'emparer de leurs biens etd'autres, excutent des gens vue, simplement parce qu'ils se trouvent sur leurchemin En plus des gens assassins le jour mme ou morts des datesindfinies dans les terribles cachots de Fort Dimanche, beaucoup sont arrts,

battus, blesss par balles, mais survivront et certains ont pu tmoigner desvnements.

Early in the morning on April 26, 1963, one of the official vehicles in charge of taking thechildren Simone and Jean-Claude Duvalier to school was attacked by four armed mendressed in army fatigues. In the struggle that followed, several of the childrens body guardswere killed. The reaction to what appeared to be an attempted kidnapping was terrible. Acall to arms to all macoutes and Duvalier supporters was sent to the radio, announcing that

there had been an attempt on the lives of the Presidents children Shortly thereafter thatsame day began a general manhunt. Any Duvalier partisan who was armed had full licenseto kill, even randomly. This murderous rage was primarily aimed at army officers suspectedof conspiracy against Duvalier, particularly lieutenant Franois Benot, as Duvalier himselfdeclared him the author of the attempt (a few weeks later this was proved completely falseand it is unlikely that Duvalier ever believed it to be true). This is how on that day and fora long time afterward- all members of the Benoit family (but also the lawyer BenoitArmand, found guilty of his first name) and all members of the Edeline family (maiden nameof Jacqueline, lieutenant Benoits wife) were hunted down and killed. Some Duvalierhenchmen seized the occasion to kill in order to take over land, houses, cars or jewelry,others shot people on sight just because they found them on their path. In addition to those

killed that day and to the ones who were arbitrarily arrested to die later in the sinister FortDimanche, many others were arrested and beaten or wounded. Some of the survivors wereable to give an account of the massacre.

MAY THE MEMORY OF THE DISAPPEARED LIVE ON, VICTIMS OF THEDICTATORSHIP, KILLED THAT 26 OF APRIL 1963. THEIR CHILDREN ANDFRIENDS INVITE ALL WHO MAY HAVE KNOWN THEM, ALL WHO BELIEVE INTHE RULE OF LAW, TO A COMMEMORATIVE MASS IN MEMORY OF THEM,
