25th Sunday of Ordinary TimeSeptember 20 2015

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Incarnation of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,

Your warm and gracious welcomes over the last two weeks have been most appreciated. Many of you have spoken to me of your long involvement with, and great love of, our parish. May we all continue to work together for the glory of God and the betterment of all. I thoroughly enjoyed the “Victorian Fair” Melrose put on for my welcoming.

I was very pleased to witness your generosity and sincere delight with Fr. Samuel’s visit last week-end. Your outreach to him, and through him the people of Kenya, was appreciated by him and by me. To realize how much we have is cause for de-veloping a greater attitude of gratitude.

May peace be given you,

Fr Ron

WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES AND PAPAL VISITWMOF was conceived by Saint Pope John Paul II in 1992 to look at strengthening the sacred bonds of the family unit across the globe. The first WMOF took place in Rome in 1994, the International year of the family.

Every three years since 1994, families from all over the world are invited by the Holy Father to attend this global gathering. At the conference, families share their thoughts, dialogue and prayers, work-ing together to grow as individuals and family units. Families can participate in discussion groups on the Christian family’s role in the church and so-ciety, led by many distinguished speakers.

This year the WMOF will be held in Philadelphia, and will end with a Mass celebrated by Pope Fran-cis. For informaiton and a link to the WMOF events please visit :http://www.worldmeeting2015.org. FALL SCRIPTURE COURSE: THE CYCLE OF MERCYHow to Remain Carefree in GodWhile Serving the Needs of Others Taught by Nina Lauzon Pension (M.A. Biblical Studies, Providence College)Starts Friday, October 2 at Our Lady’s in Lynnfield (lower church) Pope Francis believes the call to be instruments of the Lord’s merciful love is not a burden, but a joy.  Our Fall Scripture course will explore this theme to help us grow in our avail-ability to God-- “opening joyfully when He knocks.”— looking to God, and not to ourselves, confident that God will show us at every moment what needs to be done, and trusting that He will do it through us.  “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.”  Five Friday

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIMESEPTEMBER 20, 2015Childish Behavior

For the past Sundays Jesus has been shocking the disciples by showing himself as the “Just One” from today’s First Reading.

Obviously, then, as the wicked quote the Just One as saying, “God will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes.”

But instead, Jesus responds in the Gospel that, in fact, the Son of God will be condemned to the shaming torture that the wicked have planned, and

will be killed. It will look ex-actly as if God does not care.

On the contrary, the disci-ples have a long argument about which of them is the greatest! It is as if they have started fighting for the best toys, just like children, right after Jesus has told them the most intimate fact of his life!

When children are at their best they do in fact love their mom and dad. But they are helpless in so many things—that is why they can be grabby and self-interested and bothersome.

I N C A R N A T I O N P A R I S H

5

Page 7: 25th Sunday of Ordinary Time September 20, 2015 · September 20 2015 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Incarnation of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Your warm and gracious welcomes

They sense that they can survive that way. But when they say the words “I love you,” they mean it, to the extent their little hearts can.

In the First Reading “the wicked” practice a much extended version of childish self-interest. They say, in effect, look at this righteous one. He thinks he is so wonderful. Let’s take his high opinion of himself and “test it.” Let us see how revilement and torture will affect him. Let us see what a slow death will do to someone supposedly so patient and gentle. They practice mockery and cruelty, all based on self-deception.

Mockery: “If he says he is so wonderful, if he has God on his side, surely he will pass our test. We are just conducting an ‘interesting experiment’.”

Translation: he’s on the wrong side, kill him.

Cruelty: “He thinks he is so holy. We will give him torture, revilement and a shameful death. This is just reasonable research, to see how he will react.”

Translation: holiness is all a sham, a way for people to get what they want. Well, we want him dead.

Self-deception: We do not need this God stuff. We base our lives in what is real.

Translation: we are more important than God and Jesus H. Christ. Self-interest will always win. (Check out the cable channels and now the networks and the web, if you want to see how to make God irrelevant.)

All these are seductively false. No human being can become truly and freely human without put-ting God in first place, valuing everything else in relation to God’s love—even power, even wealth, and especially pride.

In the Gospel Jesus makes an example of such freedom.

This is what I am going to do, he says. I am going to say “I love you,” to my Father. But I will do it by undergoing insults and humiliating death because I love God above these things.

And I love the world, everything that is in it.

And I love you, with the fullness and warmth and generosity of God’s everlasting love.

It is hard for us to believe, but God’s promise is that, out of suffering and death good can emerge. It seems ultimately that it can come only out of these. In the end, God does defend us and deliver us from the hand of our foes.

THE PERSPECTIVE OF JUSTICE

The Law of Love

Today’s liturgy begins with the theme of the law: “guide us according to your law of love because all mankind is in need of your law; the just one ... re-

. . I N C A R N A T I O N P A R I S H

6

Page 8: 25th Sunday of Ordinary Time September 20, 2015 · September 20 2015 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Incarnation of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Your warm and gracious welcomes

proaches us for transgressions of the law.”

Notice that this is a law of love, and therefore it concerns the rightness of human relationships, in other words, justice: “the perfection of justice is found in your love ... help us to find this love in each other that justice may be attained.”

The result of following the law of love and estab-lishing justice is harmony within the human fam-ily: “the harvest of justice is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace” (Second Reading).

There is a direct line, therefore, from love through justice to peace. The recognition of this line consti-tutes the essence of wisdom, which is “peaceable, lenient, docile, rich in sympathy and the kindly deeds that are its fruit” (Second Reading).

It is in this context that we encounter the Gospel, a passage that includes the images of the cross and the child. One way to interpret this would be to say that we approach the triple challenge of love, jus-tice and peace with childlike humility, and we an-ticipate that our response to that challenge will bring us the cross.

Love for others, and in the first place love for the poor, in whom the church sees Christ him-self, is made concrete in the promotion of jus-tice.John Paul II, Centesimus Annus 1991: 58

True peace is never simply the result of military victory, but rather implies both the removal of the causes of war and genuine reconciliation between peoples.John Paul II, Centesimus Annus 1991: 18

SCRIPTURE STUDYEvery Friday morning after Mass we share coffee and conversation about God’s Word for the week. Everyone is welcome in this lively and interesting forum.

RECONCILIATION Saturday, 3:30 - 4:15 pm, or by ap-pointment at any time.

JOINING THE PARISHNo matter what your journey has been, we want to be your companions for the next steps, to share the Gospel together and to help each other along the way. Most of us are from within parish boundaries in Melrose and Saugus, but we have parishioners from as far afield as Georgetown and Framingham! Please introduce your-self to a staff member, drop in for coffee on Sunday. You can register as a parishioner online via our website, or stop by the rectory.

ADULT INITIATION, RCIAWe are always ready to begin the process by which an adult or older child becomes a Catholic, either by full initiation in baptism, or by reception into full commun-ion. We are also happy to prepare you for adult Confirmation. Contact Linda Swett.

BAPTISM FOR INFANTSNormally, the baptism of infants is celebrated within the Sunday assembly at a time convenient to the par-ents. Parents must be parishioners here or have a letter of permission from their pastor. Linda Swett is the staff contact person for preparation.

GENERATIONS OF FAITHWe are a community of life-long learners. Our parish program of inter-generational learning and celebration of faith is called Generations of Faith. We all meet to-gether several times a year for “Faith Festivals,” and many opportunities for adult learning and enrichment are offered in the bulletin and programs. Materials are in the Church or available at our Faith Formation Office through Ann Lahiff.

MARRIAGEThe engaged couple must contact the Rectory at least six months in advance, preferably a year ahead. One must be a parishioner, or have permission by his or her own pastor to celebrate the marriage with us.

CARE OF THE SICK To arrange for the Sacrament of the Sick, for Holy Communion for the home-bound, or Viaticum for the Dying, please contact the parish office. We normally send ministers out with communion after the eight o’clock on Sunday, and also schedule regular home vis-its during the week. It is always possible to anoint the sick during regularly scheduled liturgies. All you have to do is ask!

ORDER of CHRISTIAN FUNERALSWe will work with you to plan your own funeral liturgy or that of a loved one, and are prepared to celebrate the Vigil, also known as the “Wake,” in the Church building for those who choose.
