2012 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Over 150 youth and teens from our Roberts Family Branch and Linda Vista Teen Center piloted our new SOAR S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) program featuring projects in Robotics, Energy, and Claymation.

Over 1,000 youth participated in our Anti-Bullying programming called "Be A Hero." This year the program was enhanced by the University of San Diego student anti-bullying team called Lace Up, Stand Up who visited the Branches and rallied the cause.

Our 4S Ranch Branch was selected to pilot the Boys & Girls Club “ImageMakers” photography program, which was sponsored by Sony.

Over 2,300 youth had a very happy holiday, receiving individual gifts and celebrating in style with Branch parties at all 17 Club locations.

Over 9,000 youth received help with their homework, learned healthy lifestyle habits, and developed their character by being good citizens through service in their communities.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012

ACADEMIC SUCCESS A recent study on high school graduation rates determined that a child’s reading proficiency by the third grade has a direct correlation to their success in high school and beyond. The report found that 83% of all low-income students read below the stated proficiency level. We are determined to improve these numbers with our members through our “Power Hour” Homework Assistance and Tutoring program.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES The Club recognizes that children today are becoming less active and less educated on the benefits of physical activity and healthy living. Almost thirteen million U.S. children ages 2-19 years are obese and since 1980, obesity among children and adolescents has almost tripled. In response, the Club developed the “Little Jumps, Big Changes” healthy l i festyles campaign, in which members participate in programs designed to promote health and wellness.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT Two alarming statistics led us to begin taking an active stand against bullying. The first is the percent of students who are bullied mentally, verbally and physically is at 77%. Second, 60% of students identified as bullies in grades 6-9 eventually got involved in at least one criminal conviction by age 24. The “Be A Hero” anti-bullying campaign is embedded into our programming and is a focus of our conversations on a weekly basis.

OUR THREE PRIORITY OUTCOMES

Our Youth of the Year, Megulo, tutors members with their homework.

Roberts Branch members take a break from jump roping to pose for a picture.

Sulpizio Branch members imagine about a world without bullies during “Be A Hero.”
