Tom Knowles and his band Remastered are performing at the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival next month, a day he says is a huge part of summer culture in Marlborough.

produced when their own parents were still kids.In fact, these musicians in local band Remastered

play anything from any era, from rock and blues, to jazz and dub.

It has to be good music, and that’s all that matters.

Tom Knowles, Josh Logan, Jono Nott and Edward MacDonald will send the first set of music waves out across Brancott Estate at next month’s Marlborough Wine and Food Festival.

Things will chop and change a bit when they take the stage mid morning, as the first glasses of wine are being poured.

“We’re going to switch instruments during the set. It makes it a bit more fun for us to mix it up a bit,” said Tom.

For their youthful 18 years, experience on stage is not limited.

Between the band members, they’ve been involved in live music since intermediate school, in the form of jazz bands and rock bands.

Tom is a big fan of New Zealand dub music, which he calls Aotearoa Roots music; a bit grimier than normal reggae.

“It’s reggae that really incorporates the brass instruments and weird rhythmic timings, which makes it interesting and less mainstream.”

Remastered really enjoy being a covers band, but these musicians are ready to start shaping a path of their own.

“The New Zealand music scene has grown so much, because the musicians are not trying to write chart toppers, but just doing what they want to do.”

A few originals are added into their playlists on stage now too for Remastered, which Tom hopes will happen more and more.

“We want to build on this.”This year they hope to get to a recording studio

in Wellington, where they are based.This summer, while on break from their studies

in Wellington, these budding musicians have been meeting at each other’s houses and turning spare rooms into studios, and managed to get a bit of their own recording done.

“If it wasn’t for the money we would be in a real studio in a flash.”

Well known Blenheim woman Margaret Todd who was regu-larly seen about the town on her mobility scooter has died at age 70-years.

Margaret died on December 20, 2011 and a memorial service was held for her yesterday.

Margaret was a well known

character and regularly popped her head into the Sun office for a chat with staff and to pass on story ideas to reporters (and even feature in them as well).

Margaret and her lively per-sonality will be sadly missed by everyone at the Sun.

proved once again to be a day by the sea that locals flock to.

Manager of the event Pauline Gregory said it has always had the support of local volunteers and business owners, offering their time, funding and attendance.

“We couldn’t have had better

weather, families came for the whole day and into the evening, it was just fantastic.”

Anticipation grew as spectators waited for the novelty rafting race, which Pauline said is more popular every year.

About 7000 people were on the foreshore during the festival to enjoy the day, from all parts of

Marlborough and further beyond.Pauline said the core group of

eight volunteers makes the festival popular every year, and locals are great at helping when they can, even just for an hour or two.

“Picton people are embracing it, and that gives us the energy to come back bigger and better next year.”

It felt a bit like a winter’s day, but those who are fond of fishing still had a great day reeling and netting at the Crow Tavern Fishing Competition last Sunday.

Everything was in full swing by the time the rain came mid-afternoon, but Larry Ibell from the Crow Tavern Fishing Club said that didn’t dampen the mood for those taking part and watching.

“There was a severe downpour and it got bitterly cold, but it went very well and there were a lot of people at the auction.”

Once the auction started, people moved into the tavern carpark to take part.

“There were some big crayfish and a couple of big snapper.”

Final fundraising details have not been gathered yet, but Larry said it went as well as any other year, and he can’t wait to start preparing the day for next summer.

The Taylor River will be a flow of excitement this Sunday, when the More FM raft race takes place.

Because the rafts must be homemade from non-pollutant materials, and be non-motorised, it’s certainly a visual wonder.

Contestants can bring their raft to the Beaver Road Bridge from 12.30pm.

The major prize is a Heritage RedFish 12 foot Kayak, worth $1,699 from Hendersons, and anyone who enters is in with the chance to win it. There will also be spot prizes and prizes for placegetters.

The race starts at 2pm from the Beaver Road Bridge.

lost his grin since his replica whaleboat Swiftsure was accepted into the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee boat pageant set for June 3.

The former whaler applied to have his 9.74m long boat entered into the boat pageant on the River Thames last year, and received the good news of its acceptance on New Year’s morning.

“My first thought was oh hell… now I have a lot to do,” he laughs.

“I was a bit overwhelmed to start with but that turned to excitement.”

The Jubilee pageant has been described as being the greatest gathering on the River Thames for three and a half centuries.

Proudly steering with a 21 foot long oar, Ron and his crew of Marlborough Boys’ College rowers will guide the Swiftsure through the 11km journey toward the front of the flotilla.

“From what I understand we will be near the front of the flotilla, just one or two classes of boats behind the Queen’s barge,” Ron says.

This “once in a lifetime” opportunity has been hugely exciting for Ron, but now the hard work of

fundraising begins.The Swiftsure will need to be shipped to London and

airfares for Ron, a second adult and six MBC rowers need to be booked at a cost of around $50,000.

“We are aiming to drum up national support for our fundraising, but for those locally who would like to show their support and make a donation, contact the Marlborough Museum or myself on 578 4077.

“We have a sub committee off the Museum called Swiftsure on the Thames, so all donations over $5 are tax deductible,” he says.

Shoplifters test local businesses

Shoplifting has continued to rear its ugly head during the holidays as Blenheim Police point out follow-ing the arrests of five individuals on Monday for thefts carried out in the central business area.

This is an issue that has been ongoing for many businesses and has seen not only local people committing the offence, but also overseas vineyard seasonal work-ers according to The Warehouse head loss prevention officer Anaru Norton.

“We see local people coming in to test their luck on what they can get away with, as well as foreigners who come in to target clothing and footwear and the odd unusual item.

“We had a man last Thursday

come in and attempt to steal a glass cake plate worth $8. When we caught him he said he was living in a caravan and the mi-crowave plate had broken so he wanted to replace it,” Mr Norton said.

Since November The Warehouse Blenheim store has caught around 30 people attempting to shoplift, and in all cases the Police were called.

“We have a zero tolerance toward theft and our catch rate is the highest of all Warehouse stores in New Zealand. We have security cameras covering the whole store as well as covert security walking the store,” says The Warehouse Blenheim store manager Ian Daubney.

“Some people are desperate to be let off with just a warning and

you hear all sorts of sad stories of why they stole, but at the end of the day they committed a crime,” Mr Daubney said.

Trendez Blenheim business owner Lisa Duncan told the Sun shoplifting in her store was evident before Christmas but not all were caught.

“We have installed cameras looking at specific areas of the store and it helps to have an open store so you can keep an eye on people,” she said.

One of Monday’s arrests in-cluded that of a 14-year-old female student and a 20-year-old unem-ployed man after a shoplifting spree around Blenheim. The duo stole $1,200 worth of goods and targeted stores such as The Warehouse, Farmers and Noel Leeming.

planted in the right place, and the whole of Lucas St can see it.

The 11 year-old Redwoodtown school pupil’s fingers have been green since he was just out of nappies, and the hollyhock is his best success story yet.

It was planted half way through last year, and was just about 15cm when it was put in the ground.

“It likes a nice sheltered place, with not too much water,” said the budding gardener.

The pink-flowered beauty sticks its head up high through the top story kitchen window, with a piece of string attached to the bench to keep it upright.

Holden loves the pretty flowers, but said they are better suited for outside rather than being picked.

“I just leave them, it is not like a vase type of flower.”

Holden found his gardening passion at a young age when he visited his next

door neighbour and helped her in the garden, where they would spend time chatting, drinking milo, planting and digging.

“I like digging the best, I like getting dirty.”

The main gardening lessons Holden has learned so far is to pull stinging nettle out by the roots so he doesn’t get stung, and to pull the weeds out properly.

“I try and get the roots of the weeds so they don’t grow back.”

He likes to garden when it’s not too hot, and doesn’t do it every day.

“I like to play with my friends after school too.”

To keep his energy levels up he drinks water and eats weet-bix.

“I have eight or 10 weet-bix for breakfast, and about the same again for afternoon tea.”

Holden is not sure what he wants to be when he grows up, but certainly plans on spending a fair bit of time in the garden.

2006 BABY: Okaramio girl Francis Edmonds was Blenheim’s first baby for 2006, and is already planning to be a veterinarian when she grows up.


Cuddling one of her new pup-pies, six-year-old Francis Rose Edmonds is as quiet and relaxed as the day the Sun photographed her as Blenheim’s first New Year baby for 2006.

Despite being quietly spoken, the Havelock School student is full of life and enjoys her life on her family’s Okaramio farm.

The youngest of three children Francis could have been born anytime, says mum Kerri who spent two months on bedrest in hospital leading up to her birth.

“It was neat she arrived when she did on January 4, and even Francis thinks it’s great,” Kerry says.

The inspiration behind Fran-cis’s name comes from Kerry and husband Colin’s families.

Francis was Colin’s mother’s middle name and holds par-ticular special meaning to the family, while Rose has been a family name handed down through Kerry’s family for generations.

What makes Francis’s name even more special is that her name definition means ‘free’, which coincides with her initials (FRE).

“That was purely by ac-cident,” laughs Kerry.

Asked what she enjoys most in her free time, Fran-cis says it’s spending time with her three best friends, Anika, Bella and Amelia.

“I also like playing with all my animals, I would like to be a vet one day,” she says.

ing’ the stove of an 1800’s style cottage takes Brayshaw Park volunteer Doris Holdaway back to the days when she helped her mother with daily chores.

With black stained hands she tells the Sun; “I can remember as a child having to do this job for my mother on a weekly basis, gosh it takes me back a few years,” she laughs.

Doris is one of a small group of volunteers who have dedicated their time to restore a very special early settler’s cottage at Brayshaw Park.

The cottage was built in 1882 for the Watson family and was later donated to Brayshaw Park by its current owners who considered demolishing the historic building.

Three years later with the help of hundreds of hours of volunteer labour has seen the cot-tage be transformed from the rundown state it was in when it arrived, back to its former glory – well almost!

It is hoped, says Brayshaw Park Vintage Farm Machinery Society member Shirley Shefford, that the kitchen and a bedroom will be completed in time for the Park’s Heritage Day on February 6.

“If it wasn’t for the help and contributions made by Conal Cairns who built the chimney for free, Robinsons Construction for loaning us scaffolding for the wallpapering, and Guthrie Bowron for donating wallpaper for one room, we possibly couldn’t have had this done in time,” she says.

Not only will the public be able to walk through and appreciate the cottage during the Heritage Day, there will also be a display of early settler kitchen and house wares for viewing.”

“We really hope people can come through and look at the progress made on this cottage, it would be like going back in time,” Shirley says.

Home opened for art exhibition

again open her home and garden to the public for her ‘Art in the Garden’ exhibi-tion.

Last year’s exhibition was a success she says, after selling seven paintings

and donating a percentage of the sales to Alzheimers Marlborough.

Regrettably this year will be Thirza’s last so she has decided to display much of what she has left, 33 paintings about her home and all priced between $30 and $300.

“I have been painting all my life so I

want to move away from it now and try something different and more artistic,” she says.

This year Thirza will donate a percent-age of her sales to Hospice Marlborough.

The exhibition will take place from 4:30pm to 8pm Friday and Saturday.

This year will be Thirza’s last ‘Art in the Garden’ exhibition at her home.

Marlborough Sounds, so writing and directing theatre is just one of the ways Rick Edmonds does it.

The Moenui Bay resident has been involved in the Havelock Theatre Company since it began 13 years ago.

Theatre has been his world for 35 years.

“It’s brought people together, promot-ing Havelock, the people, the Sounds. That’s pretty neat.”

His passion and commitment to the group is obvious.

“We have introduced young people to that stage that have gone onto profes-sional careers.”

This year’s production of The Weath-erman starts on Thursday, and Rick’s daughter Hillary who is based in Spain also features, via a television screen.

“She was there at the beginning of Havelock, and now she’s in this play; that’s special.”

It was the tragic episode of earth-quake events in Christchurch that triggered Rick’s inspiration for this production.

The two main characters Bob and Billy are fishermen, with opposing theories on weather and environmental predictions.

Rick said theories and conflicting ideas about earthquakes has become prevalent in daily conversation, and theatre would express these ideas.

Bob and Billy are no strangers to the Havelock community.

“This is the fourth of a trilogy, and the sequel is just there to be plucked.”

Floating ducks and noisy cicadas tell a weather tale, according to some people in his community.

“I’ve borrowed richly from my friends.”

Bob and Billy have a huge fan base with local theatre followers, a ‘Bob-bism’ being a coined phrase when someone says something a bit different.

“They have taken on a life of their own.”

For a ‘day job’ Rick paints, and spend-ing time on his yacht is part of a days’ work as he gathers inspiration.

It’s just another way Rick expresses a physical and cultural landscape he knows so well.

of all things delicious, and she is taking it all in her flaming sizzling stride.

Masterchef winner of 2011 Nadia Lim was on Picton soil for just a few hours on Saturday for the Maritime Festival.

At the NZ King Salmon marquee she whipped out a couple of cooking dem-onstrations, and chatted to locals about the world of cooking.

“I enjoy having a yarn to people,” said 26 year-old Nadia, currently based in Northland.

Having spent eight years in Malaysia as a child,

and being dotted around a few different spots in New Zealand, the platform her culinary inspirations and ideas have come from is broad.

She said the key to suc-cessful cooking, wherever you are, is to work recipes around easily accessible fresh produce.

“I’ll go and see what looks good, what is in season, and go from there.”

From Southland’s duck and wild venison, to North-land and Marlborough’s seafood, Kiwi-style fla-vours are very changeable, and Nadia loves to work with these regional differ-ences.

“I reckon New Zealand food is some of the best in the world.”

Nadia has been writing a cookbook since her Mas-terchef win six months ago, and has been conducting cooking demonstrations around New Zealand.

“I’ve got to put together 120 recipes in three months, it’s quite a big ask!” said Nadia, although she loves it.

She’s excited about the food scene in New Zea-land, and has noticed a big trend towards rustic home cooking, with simple tasty ingredients.

“It’s about being produce driven, and colour gives a lot of inspiration.”

holiday season, how many hundreds of Cod will die unnecessarily because of the stupid slot rule?

No fish for the recreational set net fisher but if you are a customary or commercial fisher set your net - help yourself. Where is the fairness in this?

No one had a problem until Jim Anderton and the Greens came on the scene. Now we have a lot of dishonesty.

Nationals Mr Heatley could have put this right but he only listened to commercial and customary fishers. Recreational fishers never got a hear-ing. Why?

Recreational fishers are happy with a 60m net. Two people set nets in the same bay, one with customary right, the other a recreational fisher - why should one have to stay their net and not the other?

We need to know. Stop the diversion. Come on Mr King, do something

for the area, meet with Ministry of Fisheries, Outdoor Recreation, Sport Fishing. Get it sorted before May and get yourself off the list of worst performing National Party MPs.

Dear Editor,How is it that since the contractor

used for Marlborough’s roads started, Oldfields, the sealing work is a load of rubbish?

Take a look at the mess they’ve just made on the Dashwood Hill and on SH1 at Riverlands as you leave Blenheim.

Last year they did the road in the Riverlands Industrial Estate (first on

the right) and within days more chip had to be spread to cover the tar oozing to the surface.

If this is what we have to put up with in an effort to save some cash it might be time to return to the locals who previously had the Contract.

At least the job was better and the money stayed in the local Community.

A pregnant Rotorua woman threw herself on her American Bulldog, stopping it from its attack on a nine-year old girl on Sunday.

This attack was the sixth in four weeks which included a mauling on an 18 month old Porirua girl and a three-year-old boy bitten on the throat in Ashburton.

Blenheim Blues, Brews and BBQs is the festival that celebrates the best of summer. No wonder it’s one of the most popular events on Marlborough’s summer calendar.

Held annually at the A&P Show-grounds, the event opens at midday on February 4 and will close at 7.00pm.

Convenor Graeme Boon says the venue is ideal, it is within easy walking distance for most people and for those who require transport, taxis are avail-able throughout the day.

This festival is an R18 event, persons under 18 years of age will not be admit-ted. Children are not permitted.

Breweries both small and large will be showcasing their premium beers, for those looking for an alternative

try a glass of Harvest Cider, or cruise past the Prenzels site who offer a great alternative with their distilled options.

Non-alcoholic fruit juices, smoothies and copious amounts of iced water will be freely available.

Foodstalls are aplenty with lots on of-fer ranging from wild venison, tempura prawns, barvaria sausages to wood fired pizza and local seafood.

The festival attracts many hundreds of visitors to Blenheim each year; it’s the South Island’s only Blues Brews and BBQs festival and one the province can be proud of.

An annual event since 1994, it’s an integral part of Marlborough’s sum-mer entertainment calendar. And with tickets now limited it is guaranteed to

be a sell-out.There’s no better time or place to

enjoy everything that makes summer special.

The festival is organised and run by volunteers from Blenheim Round Table community service club.

All profits raised from the Blenheim Blues, Brews and BBQs is for local charities with the emphasis on youth activities. That’s a really positive way to wrap up a great day out.

fessional dressage rider moves towards reality for one Tua Marina teenager.

Melissa Parkes returned home for Christmas after three months of dres-sage riding in Germany.

She returns next month indefinitely. The 18 year-old country girl loves

the challenge of this new lifestyle, but admits she does miss her family and the farm.

She has spent from part way through 2010, through until September 2011 working dressage horses and working on the family farm.

Melissa said this transition set her up for the professional horse industry in Germany.

Based two hours north of Dusseldorf in Bad Salzuflun, the world of dressage professionalism was introduced to her last September.

It is a world she embraced straight away, worked hard in, and learned significant amounts about riding, horse handling, and a brand new way of life.

Melissa’s voice was a tone of fondness when she described the prop-erty; talking about the huge barn divided into apartments that was the home for about 10 fam-ily members, who would eat a three-course lunch together every day.

“It’s so family orientated.”There were many stables, more than

25 Warm Blood bred dressage horses, an indoor and outdoor arena, and the entire day is heavily structured and organised.

“It’s just so much more professional than over here, it’s more business ori-entated, and for a lot of horse people over there it’s just work.”

She said dressage was more com-monly a hobby here, because New Zealand is so much newer into the sport that Germany is leading the world in.

Melissa was riding three to five horses a day, swapping horses over from paddocks to stables, tacking and untacking horses, and carrying out cleaning duties.

Some work rules she had to learn the hard way.

Melissa described learning the art of having to share the arena with up to nine other horses and riders, where it is essential to look where you’re going.

“You have to know the arena rules, I once went head on into someone when they were doing a canter pirouette on a grand prix horse. I got told off for that, and have learned to look up after that!”

Her two favourite horses in Ger-many are what she is excited about going back for.

A five-year old horse called Jason is one horse Melissa has her eye on for the near future. In 18 months’ time is the World Young Rider Cup in Frankfurt, and she thinks he could be her horse for it.

“That’s my aim, who knows if I”ll get there or not, but in my brain that’s my aim.”

The weather next month in Ger-many won’t be as much of a draw card for Melissa.

“I had chilblains on my thighs when I came home, but the summers are good.”

Melissa is learning German too, starting night classes when she returns.

“If I don’t learn, it will be hard to live there.”

Training dressage horses and improv-

ing her riding in Germany is what Melissa adores, and everyday she is inspired by her surroundings.

“I love the feeling of a half pass, it’s the side ways floating movement on the horse, they look like they are floating on air.”

But thinking back to New Zealand riding life, she said we are so lucky to have such diversity and space, like farms and beaches, to ride on.

In the meantime, while she pursues her dream, Melissa will indulge and learn the German way of horse professionalism, a lifestyle choice she has no time limit on yet.

“I want to do this for a career, that is the aim. At primary school I wanted to be an Olympic dressage rider, it’s crazy to think I’m on the path to doing it.”

Like any health issue, there are some people who still do not heed the ‘Sun Smart’ message and risk getting excessive sun exposure and skin cancer, says Blenheim’s Doctor Mark Foley.

Bor n a nd bred in Blenheim, Dr Foley be-gan treating skin cancers when he was working in rural general practice 20 years ago. He underwent Dermascopy training in Austria in 2003 and has been running a dedicated skin cancer clinic, Elanz Clinic for almost 10 years.

According to Dr Foley the overall incidence of severe sun burn is declin-ing, however he has seen an increased number of skin cancers in those with olive skin.

“Those with fair skin generally have good motivation to protect themselves from the sun as their skin can sting and obviously burn with sun exposure, whereas those with olive skin can tolerate quite prolonged periods of sun exposure.

“So it is not just the number of sunburns that increase your risk of sun

cancer but also the total amount of sun exposure. A sun tan provides a SPF factor of only five or less, so it provides very little protection,” Dr Foley says.

Presenting most fre-quently with sun related conditions are those in the 50 plus age group, including those who have been very careful with sun exposure in the preceding decades.

“It is their past sun ex-posure that has caught up with them,” Dr Foley informs.

“There is a long lag time between excessive sun exposure and sun damage, often 20 to 30 years or more. The mes-sage is simple, all age groups need to heed the sun smart message as the more sun damage you get the greater the risk of skin cancer.”

However we all need some sun exposure with the majority of people only needing 10-15 min-utes of direct unprotected sun per day to produce enough vitamin D.

This sun exposure is best early in the morning or late afternoon so the most

intense part of the sun’s exposure is avoided.

Asked what were the youngest cases of skin cancer that he had seen, Dr Foley responded say-ing the youngest person was only 14-years.

“Every year I see people in their early 20’s with skin cancer, and I have read case reports of chil-dren with melanoma at the tender age of five-years and less, though these cancers are probably due to genetic factors rather than being sun related.

“Generally though the older you are the greater the risk is of getting skin cancer,” he says.

Threats and theft

Last Tuesday Blenheim Police arrested a 35-year-old male for an offence committed on January 2. Police say the male asked his victims (a 23-year-old male and 25-year-old female) for a ride to a Riversdale address. After the victims gave him a ride he then asked them if they had any money. When they stated they did not have any money the male has then threatened them, forcing the victims to hand over their wallets. He then allegedly removed $300 cash and left.

When Police located him last Tuesday he was found to be in possession of a pocket knife and prescription medicine which was not prescribed to him.

He was arrested for demanding to steal, possession of a knife in a public place and possession of prescription medicines.

Later that day a 21-year-old male fisherman was arrested at 8:40pm for fighting in a public place as well as on a warrant for his arrest after an incident

on Waikawa Road in Picton.

Assault and alcohol causes disturbances

On Friday night a 19-year-old male fisherman was arrested

for assault after an incident on Maxwell Road in Blenheim.

Later that night a 33-year-old unemployed male was

arrested for driving whilst dis-qualified and breaching his bail

conditions by consuming alcohol.

Saturday was only slightly more eventful for Blenheim Police with

only three arrests made. In the early hours an 18-year-old male

mechanic was arrested for breaching the liquor ban.

Shortly after at 2:20am a 42-year-old male skipper was arrested for assault-ing Police and resisting arrest after he allegedly pushed a Police officer on Wellington Street in Picton.

Assaults on Police Officers continued when a 33-year-old unemployed female

was arrested for assaulting Police and breaching her bail conditions after an incident at the Picton Foreshore.

Police recover stolen property

Trouble began early on Sunday for Blenheim Police with the first arrest being made at 2:40am. A 19-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for disorderly behaviour resulting from an incident on Scott Street in Blenheim.

That afternoon at 2pm a 24-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for possession of cannabis and possession of utensils after Police went to a Redwood-town address on an unrelated matter.

Hours later at 7:40pm a 19-year-old male labourer was arrested for burglary after he allegedly broke into a Riversdale address at about 6am and stole a laptop, play station and motor vehicle. Police recovered all of the stolen property. The male has been held in Custody and appeared before the Court on Monday.

Shortly after a 23-year-old male vine-yard worker was arrested on a warrant for his arrest for breaching his com-munity work.

Threats, thefts and assaults

The public is being urged by Police to be vigilant as the cannabis growing season is now well under way.

Plants being grown outdoors will be close to maturity now and noticeable, say Police.

“It is this time of year that police particularly need rural residents and visitors to rural areas of the district to be extra vigilant.

“Deerstalkers, pig-hunters, trampers, people taking part in outdoor recreation, and people working in the rural and aviation industries can all be excellent eyes and ears for police.”

Police say cannabis plots won’t necessarily be large. Growers now tend to plant in smaller groups of 10 to 15 in the hope they go unnoticed.

Actions such as repeated visits to certain loca-tions, people seen where they are not supposed to be, shovels, spades and equipment being carried into the bush and vehicles in rural areas closed to the public or with difficult access, are to be reported to Police.

“It could be drugs, it could be innocent, it could be other types of offending such as poaching. If people are growing cannabis in an area there is often associated crime, such as theft of electric fence units, so it’s in everyone’s interests to report activity before it escalates.”

quality building, there will be big local interest in this year’s Registered Master Builders 2012 House of the Year competition.

Last year Marlborough featured prominently, receiving a number of awards including the overall House of the Year, for a property in Mahau Sounds, featuring Glenroy Housing Ltd.

The awards have traditionally set a benchmark for residential and commer-cial buildings all around New Zealand.

Marlborough Coordinator of the Awards, Jodie Lawson, said building

apprenticeships are still a popular occupation choice for people here in Marlborough.

Andrew Lawson of Lawson Builder, and who is President of the Marlborough Master Builders Asso-ciation, regularly receives phonecalls from people wanting to get involved in the industry.

“Last year’s results goes to show that the overall quality of our local Master Builders and tradesmen is exception-ally high, and this was recognised with the outstanding success of last year’s national awards,” said Jodie.

Entries are now open for the awards, and close on February 26.

SolarCity Summer Movies is coming to Blenheim this month for the first time.

A long-time featured event in Nel-son, Organiser Antony Hodgson says it will be an equally great success here in Marlborough.

“I think the simplicity is a big part of the appeal - it’s a low key event, where people can just spread out their blankets and relax as night falls and the movie begins,” he says. “The community feel of a shared experience is part of the attraction, and that goes with a fair bit of audience response such as booing at the villain and cheering the heroes.”

National Velvet will be shown on Sunday 29 January at Baden Powell corner in Pollard Park, 9pm-11pm, (the movie starts at dusk.)

Taylor to stardom. She stars as young Velvet Brown, a

girl determined to train a wild horse to race for England’s Grand National Sweepstakes - Mickey Rooney as Mi Taylor uses his contacts to get her clearance to enter the race and much drama ensues.

National Velvet has a G certificate and a screening time of two hours.

Cost: $2 adult, $1 child. Pack a picnic (BYO welcome), bring a rug or your couch, wear warm clothes or pyjamas and pocket a torch to light your way home.

Reeling back the years

of intense motorsport amongst New Zealand’s best Super Saloon drivers, Marlborough driver Paddy North has placed second in the NZ Super Saloon Grand Prix in Christchurch last Friday night.

The action began two week-ends ago when 30 of the coun-try’s top speedway competitors began in Nelson’s Tahuna Holiday Park Speedway with the two day National Cham-pionship.

A dramatic four lap run-off victory against famous NZ golf caddy, Steve Williams saw Paddy earn a spot in the finals night.

Napier’s Steve Flynn was the driver to catch on the final night but after the three heats, the title was his.

Although Paddy started strong the second heat saw the odds against him when he was turned around by another car putting him a lap behind.

A strong third heat run was not enough for a top three

finish, placing ninth overall for the event.

Most of the competitors then joined others at Christchurch’s Woodford Glen Speedway for the NZ Super Saloon Grand Prix held last Friday evening where a “Winner Takes All” race determined a title holder.

Paddy managed to find sub-stantial speed and handling to go into the final with con-fidence and worked his way to finish second in a dramatic 20 lap feature race behind Nelson’s Ian Burson.

Blenheim man Bob Radley may have started his water sport pas-sion with jet boats, but nowadays he and his family can be found fishing and playing around in some unique inflatable boats.

A retired businessman, Bob recently discovered fishing pontoon boats (pictured) after watching an American man landing “bumper” trout on the Karamea River.

He tracked the manufacturer to

China and became the first per-son in New Zealand to introduce this particular model of boat.

What makes them unique is their simple concept of using two inflatable pontoon tubes with a frame astride them and a seat upon the frame. They then de-flate and fold down to a compact size, fitting in a bag similar in size to a large sports bag.

Keen to put the boats through their paces, Bob and his family have been hitting the water on the Wairau River and in Port

Underwood’s Robin Hood Bay during the holiday period.

“These fishing pontoons have an affinity with my past in being a boatie and we knew they would be great boats for NZ’ers on our many waterways,” he says.

Bob operated NZ’s first com-mercial jet boat business origi-nally set up by the Hamilton family inventor’s associates operating on the Waimakariri River. He also commenced this countries first commercial river rafting trips.

Ticket sales are looking good for this year’s Marlborough Wine and Food Festival.

ponies after school, but also manage to keep room for other sports, play station and a bit of homework too.

Brodie Ratcliffe and Cam-eron Hunt, both 16 years-old from Marlborough Boys College, are looking for-ward to playing on home turf at the Blenheim Polo Ground in this weekend’s tournament.

Practice games, and trave-ling to tournaments around the South Island has kept them busy over summer.

Cameron was introduced to polo three years ago by a neighbour in the Wairau township.

“I just came to one tourna-ment and did some groom-ing and got into it.”

Even a broken arm in his early days has not changed his mind about horses.

“You go pretty fast some-times. But I was back in the saddle six weeks later.”

Ponies can feel fresh at the beginning of the season which can be unnerving, but his favourite pony Sparky is always trusting.

“A good pony is calm and nice natured.”

tered around at the 5km run-ning event by the Taylor River.

With the aim of getting people fit for the St Clairs Half Mara-thon in May, and providing a social activity for people of all ages and backgrounds around Blenheim, the 15-week gather-ing at Taylor River on Tuesday evenings started, with the first session yesterday evening.

Run in conjunction with the half marathon event, and AvantiPlus, the manager of the event Lynne Haines said lots of people have a vision of wanting to get fit and run a half

marathon, but need the extra encouragement and confidence.

Running bibs are $5, and are purchased at the auditorium next to the river just before the run begins.

Walkers and hybrid partici-pants start at 5.45, and runners start at 6pm.

The bib is swapped for a drink at Fairweathers afterwards.

All proceeds from bib sales go towards Project K, a well known charity inspiring young children to gain self confidence through our natural environ-ment.

“We want to make running a bit of fun, it’s about socialis-ing and meeting people,” said Lynne.

“I like the adrenalin you get from polo, because you have people chasing you.”

Tearing a ligament in his right ankle during one season reminded him what a close-contact sport polo is.

“I was riding past a player and my horse ran into the side of him.”

In a couple of years Cameron wants to

head to England, and Brodie wants to head to America.

They describe a day at the polo as a fun one.

“Come and have a look, you’ll see some fast paced action!” said Brodie.

“But don’t get sunburnt!” added Cam-eron.

The Skene Cup polo tournament will be held at the Blenheim Polo Ground, Redwood St, from this Friday January 27, until Sunday. Six teams will feature in the A grade competition, and four will feature in the B grade.

Blenheim teenager Braedon O’Brien, who is celebrating his selection to represent New Zealand at the Junior World Championship for Taekwondo in Egypt at the beginning of April.

Black belt holder Braedon was spotted at the Junior Black Belt selector tourna-ment held in Auckland last October.

During the tournament he fought in divisions, 68-73kg and heavy weights and won both fights.

Since the age of four, he says he has been training for an opportunity such as this, but he was not prepared for how he

would react when news arrived of his selection.

“I was so excited when I heard, making the NZ team

was a goal I have been working hard towards,

but it still was a sur-prise when I found out,” he grins.

For Braedon’s parents, Jill and

Colin O’Brien it will be a dream come true.“My first reaction was oh my god, this is so

awesome,” Jill laughs.“For me I have always hoped one of our kids

would represent NZ as no-one from my family had ever reached that goal, so it’s definitely been a huge highlight for me personally,” she says.

For proud father Colin, he will be able to watch the action from the sidelines as he will be travelling with Braedon.

But until the championship event, Colin says he will be helping to keep Braedon’s fitness, training and eating consistent in order for him to be at his physical best.

“We always knew Braedon had this level of potential right from an early age, but I am still very proud of him and will be supporting him every step of the way,” Colin smiles.

To prepare for the World Junior Champion-ships, Braedon will attend two training ses-sions in Auckland where he will be instructed by members of the Taekwondo NZ (TNZ) high performance Olympic Squad and TNZ Senior Representative Team.

In order for Braedon to get to Egypt he must fundraise around $8000. Already local busi-

nesses have been supporting and made cash donations and now the family has organised a fund-raising dinner and auction night at Bamboo Garden Restaurant in Blenheim for February 28.
