25-30 July 2019 Dear all,

Shimi Kang

What type of parents are you? Recently, I talked with my friends about the way of modern parenting. 4. Elephant parent As close to opposite of tiger parenting as possible, these parents value emotional security and connection. These parents seek not to raise their voices and value encouragement over academic or athletic success. 5. Dolphin Parent Shimi Kang writes in "The Dolphin Way: A Parent’s Guide to Raising Happy, Healthy, and Motivated Kids Without Turning Into A Tiger" that these parents seek collaboration, flexibility and balance. This parenting is further defined by the acronym POD. P for play and exploration, O for others and D for downtime, which includes rest, exercise and sleep. When I recall my parents' free-range education, I am grateful to them. I can say they had a great influence on my growth. They gave me enough time, space and trust to experience failures and setbacks, learn from difficulties and build confidence. As the Chinese saying goes, "look to your children for success”, no form of parenting is perfect. No matter which type of parenting, it is from the parents’ selfless love. The big question is the child can understand this selfless love. There is a natural tendency for parents to help their children, but in the process of helping, do parents always reflect on whether their ways are suitable for their children's growth? >> 25th SLC at Hwa Chong

From the 3rd to 6th June 2019, year 11 students of NationalHigh Jakarta School took part in the 25th Students Leaders Convention (SLC) in Singapore. The 25th SLC was organized by Hwa Chong Institution of Singapore. The SLC was a four-day international event attended by student delegates from all over the world to come together to discuss worldwide issues. Every year, the SLC invites a Guest of Honour for delegates to have the chance to converse with esteemed leaders. This year, the SLC was honoured to have Ms Indranee Rajah as the Guest of Honour for the 25th SLC. The theme for the 25th SLC is Education: Transcending Boundaries, Pioneering Change. The theme for this year’s convention reflects this prerequisite for society to function effectively as a unified and cohesive body. Delegates from over 30 different schools came together to engage in a discussion of pertinent global issues. This convention allowed us to understand that no matter where we are in the world, our problems may still be the same. After many days of fruitful discussions, delegates were able to be descending and cognisant of the diverse stances that different stakeholders may have on the same issue, and come up with creative and innovative solutions to resolve it.

NHJS delegates were assigned to Youth Assembly, 4 Youth Faculty 12 with the topic of education in developing countries, and the issue of gender inequality. The resolution that we developed and confirmed for action was to educate the people in rural areas. The 25th SLC was indeed an eye-opener and provided great

motivation for us as young leaders to better our beloved one and only world. – Nur Fadhillah (Y12P)

Now I am an Assistant Teacher in Y2I. Quote: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.”

>> GROW Lessons Students in Year 7 had GROW Lessons together with Mr. Josh and Mr Leo. The hour was well-spent on the discussion about values of a Piagetian. The students were challenged to practise and apply those values in their daily lives through different activities during the lessons.
