39 STEPS- A TRIUMPH!

On December 4th – 6th the Drama Department opened the school’s beautifully refurbished theatre with a production of “The 39 Steps” a hilarious parody of John Buchan’s

classic adventure novel and Hitchcock’s famous film. The performance was a sell out on all three

nights and the opening night of the performance was visited by actor and Old Tauntonian Edward

Blumel. Edward had also spent the afternoon giving workshops to sixth form Drama students and the drama scholars

before watching the play and then meeting the cast backstage -in particular Patrick Large, who played the caddish rogue Richard Hannay the protagonist of the show.

'HARRY THE PIANO' IN CONCERT AT TAUNTON SCHOOL

25TH FEBRUARY 2020

TAUNTON SCHOOL THEATRE @ 7PM

ADULTS £8 CHILDREN £3

Tickets available: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/tauntonschool

THE BEST DARN PIANIST IN THE CIVILISED WORLD.’ - JONATHAN ROSS

We are delighted to welcome a world renowned Pianist to Taunton School this term. During the afternoon of his visit ‘Harry the Piano’ will be running interactive student workshops with a number of Taunton School musicians. Following on from this from this he will perform an evening concert in our school theatre alongside guest performances from workshop pupils.

Tickets are now on sale for the evening concert, and we hope that you are able to join us for a truly unique experience. Harry’s extraordinary talent and breath-taking creativity have earned him a reputation as one of the most gifted improvising pianists in the world. Celebrities and critics alike have lined up to shower him with praise. No other musician can spontaneously reinvent Michael Jackson in the style of Mozart, recreate a night at the Groucho club through the TV themes of its actor members, and improvise a seamless medley of audience requests ranging from James Bond to Shostakovich via West Side Story.

An unmissable evening of musical entertainment.

39 STEPS- 'EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE'The play follows the adventure of Richard Hannay

after a secret agent – Annabella Schmidt ( Lottie Michaels) – is murdered in his apartment whilst trying to convey top secret information from the country. Hannay goes on the run, fearing that he will be framed for her murder either by the police ( Mark Eavis, Charlie Franks, Rafe Salvador, Kit Hockey and Amelie Gowen) who are chasing him across London and on to a train, or caught by the “Heavies” (Bertie Miller, James Tyrrell) and their terrifying boss the enigmatic and elusive “Professor” ( Ilya Romananov). As Hannay travels across Scotland trying to clear his name and evade capture until the real criminals are exposed he encounters a host of wonderful and eccentric characters such as The McGarrigles, an old Scottish couple who run a ramshackle hotel (Philip Pulicino and Tate Goldman), The “Dodgy Salesmen” ( Max Fletcher and Woody Knight), an elderly pair of councillors at a political rally ( Lucy Beresford and Fran Leonard) and even manages to have

a romantic tryst with Margaret ( Fleur Bardot) the young wife of an old Scottish Crofter (Jamie Kent).

As the play nears its conclusion Hannay is shot at by planes, chased across the moors by police and handcuffed to Pamela ( Demi Kasali), a woman he later falls in love with.Eventually he is followed to the London Palladium where, whilst watching the remarkable Mr Memory ( Chikere Jumbo), Hannay realises that the professor is there watching the show. The climax of the play involves gun shots, dancing girls, mime artists and the longest mathematical explanation in a death scene you are ever likely to have seen.

The 48 strong cast, supported by an excellent team of students and staff both backstage and in the lighting box, had a fantastic time and put on an exceptional performance of this original and hilarious show. We look forward to the next one!

THE GREAT WEIRFIELD BAKE OFFWeirfeld House are big fans of The Great British Bakeoff, and big fans of cake too in actual fact! It was for this reason that

we decided we would host our own version for our most recent ‘Super Sunday’ activity – The Great Weirfield Bakeoff. Owing to the weather we decided against erecting a bake off tent in the garden (!) and instead drew up a rota so that each had their own slot in which to bake. The girls began at 1pm and the final team were still putting the finishing touches to their creation at 9.30pm. It really was a baking marathon! All of the girls were given a basic vanilla cupcake recipe which they could adapt as they saw fit. The girls put great thought into their creations and came up with some fantastic flavour combinations, such as salted caramel, orange and lemon and red velvet. Great care and attention was taken over the presentation of their cakes with hand-spun sugar, homemade chocolate ganache and fudge sauce as well as the ingenious idea of a crushed boiled sweets sprinkle. Their finished cakes looked absolutely magnificent and tasted just as good too. Mr Glaser kindly offered his services as a judge and had the unenviable task of deciding which team would emerge victorious. After much deliberation and taking into account both taste, texture and presentation he decided that ‘Team Mastrid’ (Astrid and Megan) were the winners with ‘Team Imm’ (Georgia and Rosie) as runners up. Well done to all of the teams who worked so well together and showed such baking skill and creativity! Laura Brayley, Housemistress Weirfield

“But we’ve always done it like this.....”, a phrase that fills me with dread, is heard less frequently these days but if we don’t challenge the “things we have always done” then we make no progress. With reference to George Bernard Shaw we must be unreasonable, and challenge traditions, if we are to make progress. In my early days as Headmaster I found myself challenging a number of assumptions and making changes where necessary. I continue to reflect on commitments within the school day and ask if they are still relevant or could we do them differently? School assembly for example. I attended school assemblies many years ago, my parents did and our students continue to do so. Is there a need when notices can be passed more effectively and efficiently using technology? I am writing this having been to two assemblies so far this term. The first a joint effort from Mr Burnett and Ben Pomeroy (L6) - Ben talked through the findings of his innovative review of keeping personal information safe. All staff and students were engaged throughout. In the second

Mr Gallimore talked us through the events leading up to the assassination of Qasem Soleimani and its potential effects on the Middle East. Absolutely fascinating and delivered in a way that was engaging for all in attendance.

Assemblies allow the school community to come together, to share successes (and difficulties) and to hear interesting and relevant experiences. They are most definitely an area of school life that stand up to the challenge to which I referred earlier.

MARSHALL QUIZ NIGHTOn Friday 10th January, 25 Marshall boys pitted their

general knowledge against each other. Questions ranged from music (mainly from the 80’s and 90’s) to Geography and Sport. A special round was also contested where the boys had to think about the Taunton School site and some of the little details that are usually missed such as how many windows there are in the dining room and what the Griffin in our school shop logo holds. The boys also enjoyed some pizza half way through the quiz, and all who attended left in high spirits, having been excellent company for the evening. The scores were close, the winning team (Oh, Ed!) consisting of Ed Kerslake, Olly Butler, Nick Payne, Philip Pullicino and Henry Collins just edging ahead to win a large bag of sweets to share.

Our thanks to Mr Hallows for organising a great evening. Philip Edwards, Housemaster of Marshall

TEA TIME CONCERTThe first teatime concerts of the term featured two

sets of exceptional but contrasting performances. On 15th January Year 12 student Isaac Onyiroha performed Domenico Scarlatti’s intriguing Keyboard Sonata in A minor with its busy passagework and contorted harmonies. Following this, Taunton School Barbershop had their debut performance with the Flying Picket’s famous acapella song “Only You”. Finally, Daisy Hickson performed Pedro Iturralde’s dazzling Pequeña Czarda in a show of great virtuosity and talent. The following week’s concert kicked off with Hetty

Christopher performing Armenian composer Alexander Aratunian’s Concert Scherzo, a delightful piece performed excellently by the trumpeter. Matthew Knight performed the cool and jazzy Ray’s Blues by Dave Grusin on the piano and Anthony Knight played the first four movements of Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances for violin and piano. Finishing off the concert, Lottie Michaels sung “In His Eyes” from Stephen Sondheim’s Jekyll and Hyde, a poignant and dramatic moment in the musical.

SPORTNETBALL

U15B VS SHERBOURNE

11TH JANUARY 2020- MATCH REPORT AND RESULTS

We had a very positive start to our first match of the season, with a lead after the first quarter. Unfortunately once Sherbourne had warmed up, when they had possession they were successfully putting shots up enabling them to take the lead. Come the third quarter Sherbourne pulled away from us though it was not an exact representation of how the girls played. As we made some excellent interceptions all over the court, special mention going to Ailani Braine-Clarke and Helen Hounslow, who made numerous great interceptions and turn overs. Unfortunately silly mistakes following the interceptions meant that we were unable to utilise them and bring the game back.

But an excellent effort and very promising start for the girls, makes for a very exciting season to come.

U15A VS SHERBOURNEIt was a slow start to the match in wet and windy

conditions. Both teams struggled to maintain possession due to sloppy play throughout the first half and it finished 6 – 5 to Taunton. In the second half of the game, Taunton worked hard on coming forward for safe balls and the ball began to travel down the court smoothly and successfully. Finally, Taunton began to pull away in third quarter but the real surprise was the way the girls defended in the final quarter. A special mention should go to Emily J who successfully helped to turn over several balls and to Georgia K and Darcie, who despite the horrid conditions, shot fantastically. The final score was 18 – 7.

Well done, girls! An excellent start to our season!

FOOTBALL1STS V CANFORD

1st Team won 1-0 against Canford 1st Team. The game was very much dominated by Taunton, but missed chances meant it was a lot closer game than it should have been and if it wasn’t for Anthony’s last minute goal or Ed’s crucial saves it could have been a different result.

Goal Scored: Anthony Awote

Man of the match: Ed Kerslake

2NDS V CANFORD

2nd Team lost 4-0 against Canford 2nd Team. The second team played well considering a few injuries and crucial players were unavailable, Louise being one of them, but chances were created but again seemed to lack the clinical finish in front of goal. If it wasn’t for Flavio’s persistence in defence the scoreline could have looked worse than it was, but on the whole an unjust result for them.

Man of the match: Flavio Longobardi

3RDS V CANFORD

3rd Team won 6-2 against Canford 3rd Team. The thirds first game of the season and what a way they started the season, being 4-0 up by half time they were in full control of the game. Some excellent finishes from Alex and a wonder strike from Lucas saw the game out for Taunton who didn’t look threatened at any stage during the match.

Goals scored: Alex Yanovskiy x5 and Lucas Alvares Bordon

Man of the match: Alex Yanovskiy

1STS V DOWNSIDE

1st Team won 4-1 against Downside 1sts. Another solid performance by the 1st team and were in full control during large parts of the game. They went into half-time only 1-0 up but could have been 3 or 4 if we had finished our chances. In the second half the boys were a lot more clinical in front of goal and started to put away their chances and unfortunately couldn’t keep a clean sheet with a breakaway goal conceded with 5 minutes to go. The 1st team are now unbeaten in 6 games with the cup game coming up this Wednesday gives them a lot of confidence.

Goals Scored: Dan Irons, Jacob Hockey, Tjark Lundehn and Matt Tucker

Man of the match: Dan Irons

2NDS V DOWNSIDE

2nd Team won 6-0 against Downside 2nds. The 2nds redeemed themselves well after last week’s performance and dominated the game throughout. Some standout performances by Alex Yanovskiy and Ian Lau took the game away from Downside within the first half and continued to capitalise on poor play from Downside in the second half to make it a comfortable win for Taunton. Special mention to Alex Yanovskiy who has now scored 8 goals in 2 games.

Goals Scored: Alex Yanovskiy x3, Ian Lau, Lino Goncalves and Jacob Ferguson

Man of the match: Ian Lau

CROSS COUNTRYSaturday 11th January saw 7 keen Taunton School

cross country runners travelling to Downside School for the first cross country fixture of the season. With strong winds, sporadic rain showers and a vast amount of mud, the challenge seemed to be just as much mental, as it would be physical. First to race were the inter boys and representing Taunton School for this class was Mark Eavis. A great effort amid a very competitive field placed Mark in 15th place. The senior girl’s race was subsequently started with Anna Parkinson and Andrea Gilbert racing for Taunton. A misfortunate wrong-turning from Anna as she led the pack going into the halfway point meant Anna had to turn around and rejoin the runners on the right route. This cost Anna time, and ultimately resulted in her placing 7th overall, as opposed to what could very well have been first place. A strong run from Andrea saw her finish 15th overall in a very competitive time.

The final race of the day was the Senior boy’s class. Taunton runners for this race included: Archie Tyler, Nick Payne, Gustav Zhao and Tamby Welch. All the boys ran extremely well and managed to secure good positions among a challenging field of runners. Archie came in first for Taunton and 6th overall. Nick followed suit, coming in at 10th. After a spectacular sprint finish, Gustav managed to place 21st and Tamby came in soon after, as he was 28th overall.

A special mention must go out to Mr. Marriage who also ran the senior boy’s race, and achieved a very good time in the process! The next fixture will be the second round of the cross country cup in Yeovil on Saturday 18th, where Taunton School cross country runners will look to repeat the same successes as the weekend just gone (and hopefully not get lost in the process!). HOCKEYU16 GIRLS NATIONAL PLATE ROUND 4

On Tuesday the U16 Girls travelled to Malvern College. In terrible conditions we eventually arrived after a long journey. Straight off the bat the girls were getting warmed up and looked ready to go. The game started fast with both teams creating good chances but none capitalising. It was not until 11 seconds before half time that Malvern took the lead 1-0 into the second half. The girls dusted themselves down and went again, still miserable conditions they fought hard and despite a few good chances it was end to end hockey and Malvern again found the net before we could. This is how the game finished meaning the girls are now out of the National Plate competition after a long season.

Well done to all involved some great hockey played by all!

U16 CUP U15 BOYS V CLAYESMORE U16S

In our first floodlit game, with temperatures hovering near zero, this was a tough fixture against a strong u16 clayesmore side. Starting slowly after a short warm and along journey, we were put under early pressure. A couple of early errors found us three nil down before we managed to wake ourselves up. Half time saw us four nil down on a dreadful icy treacherous pitch. The second half showed what we were capable of as a team. After controlling possession, Gabe Cameron finished well for our first goal. Our second was slightly more fortunate, but well deserved due to the high pressure we put on Clayesmore. 4-2 the final score was a fair result overall, the second half bringing a return of confidence and showed the potential we had as a team.

Goals: Gabe Cameron, Kit Hockey

Man of the Match: Gabe Cameron Kit Hockey, Year 10

A great win over Queens College on the weekend for the U14A hockey team with a 6-1 away from home win. Some stand out performances were from Hayden Grinswell playing at left back, Bryce Bedingfield at right back and Seb Malley in the midfield all showing great distribution of the ball and skills. Overall a great start to the season for the team and hopefully there will be more results like this in the future.

CRICKETLADY TAVERNER'S UNDER 15 GIRLS CRICKET- WELLINGTON 70, TAUNTON 50

An inexperienced team, due to regional netball preparations, travelled to Wellington to play an indoor cricket match. Taunton bowled first and put pressure on the Wellington batters. The first wicket was claimed with an excellent yorker by Jytte Lundehn, in her first ever cricket match. The second was gained by Julia Louw who bowled an excellent 3rd and last over only conceding 14 runs in those 12 balls. Amalie Thomas, Olivia Pyke and Izzy Hogevold completed the bowling line up, Grace Hutchinson and Fay Vincent also fielded well. Taunton had to chase 70 to win. Izzy Hogevold batted very positively to give Taunton a chance. This was backed up by the efforts of Hetty Holden and then Jytee who hit a great six to put Taunton close. However the runs dried up in the last two overs and Taunton were 20 short.
