INTRODUCTION

HOW TO GET THE TOP PERFORMANCE AND LONG LIFE BUILT INTO YOUR PLANTER

The Nos. 249 and 250 Corn Planters are designed to plant most types and sizes of seed - from small tomatoes to large lima beans as well as the many varieties of seed corn.

These planters will streamline your rowcrop planting methods:

1. Your planter is quick-attaching and ready to go the instant you need it.

2. Higher planting speeds and large capacity hoppers reduce time in case of bad weather during the planting season.

3. A large variety of equipment is available for specialized planting.

Years of research, design and development. precision manufacture. and hundreds of inspections are your assurance that your planter will do good work for many seasons. It is up to you, however, to protect your investment by maintaining the planter's built-in performance. To do this you must understand exactly how the planter works, what can be done with it, and how to operate it correctly.

Most difficulties responsible for inferior planting are not serious. They can be taken care of quickly and easily if you know how to locate and remedy them. This manual tells you how. If you will read and apply the information it contains, you can do a good job of planting even though you have never operated a planter. Remember, good care and long service go together. How long your planter will last and continue to do good work, is largely up to you!

Keep this book handy for quick reference. It will save you time, trouble, and money. For additional information or assistance, see your International Harvester dealer.

nlustrations are numbered to correspond with the page number on which they are located. Therefore, if reference is made to lIIust.68, for example,. you know that the illustration appears on Page 6. The letter "B" in lIIust. 68 indicates that it is the second illustration on that page.

Throughout this manual the terms "right" and "left" must be understood to mean from a position behind and facing the machine.

FACTS ABOUT YOUR PLANTER

Two types of high speed two-row trailing corn planters are available. They enable big

4

acreage farmers to plant up to 30 acres of corn a day. The No. 249 is a drill planter. The No. 250 is a power hill drop planter that also drills. The No. 250 may also be equipped with a Checkrow Planting Attachment.

These quick-attaching planters are designed to plant crops in rows spaced 28",30",32",34", 36", 38",40", and 42" apart when drilling, or power hill dropping, and 36 11 , 38", 40", and 42" when checking. They are also equipped with parts for accurate planting at higher speed and controlled by a quick-acting built-in ground driven power lift or hydraulic remote control cylinder operated from the tractor seat.

When power hill dropping or checking with a No. 250 Planter, two, three, or four grains in the hill, as desired, can be obtained by changing the drill shaft gear ratio with the shifter lever. Just move the lever to the corresponding number on the lever bracket for the number of seeds desired.

The triple sprocket on the countershaft and the double sprocket on the gear case and the drill shaft shifter setting of twos, threes, and fours, provide eighteen speeds of the seed plate.

Fertility planting can also be obtained with the No. 250 Planter equipped with a Checkrow Plantin'g Attachment. It is possible to obtain the selection of the desired population per acre according to the fertility of the field, rather than being confined to an even drop of two, three or four kernels to the hill.

The sloping tube at the top of the boot allows the seed to follow its normal course when it is discharged from the seed plate. This prevents bouncing of the seed and delay in the drop.

The boots are designed for high speed planting. The mechanism and all actuating parts are precision made and carefully assembled for smooth free-working action.

The large capacity seed hoppers hold about 31 pounds of corn. They have a plastic window at the front, thus permitting the operator to see the amount of seed in the hopper from the tractor seat.

The large selection of seed plates fits all seeds from small tomato seeds to large lima beans. A choice of one set of seed plates is included with each planter.

The flotation of each planter unit works independently of the others, maintaining uniform planting depth even in rough ground. Springs on the lift pitrnans permits pressure to be applied to each opener. These springs are available on special order.
