We are now well into 2005 so we can probably look forward to Eastereggs very soon!

HAGLEY SURGERY - INFORMATION FOR PATIENTSPAYMENT FOR LETTERS/INSURANCE FORMS/MEDICALS
Patients are sometimes surprised to be asked to pay for a letter to be written ontheir behalf, for an insurance form to be completed, for a medical examination to beundertaken or for a private sick note or a private prescription to be supplied. Thereason that we charge for such services is that they are not covered or paid forunder the terms of our contract with the National Health Service.
Most services are ‘free at the point of delivery’ as they have been paid for by theState, however, the services mentioned above are excluded from this agreement.Such services are provided at a reasonable professional rate by the doctors at thePractice. The list of ‘Non NHS fees’ chargeable is displayed in the waiting roomand is also contained within the Practice Leaflet. The fees list is reviewed annuallyand may be subject to change.
We feel it is important to offer this explanation to our patients in order that they areforewarned that a fee may be payable and will understand why they are beingcharged.
This may also help our reception team who are sometimes challenged regarding thevalidity of the fee.
Thank you, Hagley Surgery.

CLENT PARISH COUNCIL
Planning Application for 46 sheltered apartments in Park RoadThe Parish Council has objected most strongly to this application for further development in the
village. Any resident who wishes to comment should write to the Director of Planning at Bromsgrove DistrictCouncil quoting reference B/2004/1533HLP. The plans can be viewed at the Parish Office, as can all planningapplications for this Parish.
2005We have many plans for the village this year, which include the following:
Further improvements to the ‘High Street’Re-rendering of the changing roomsMore anti-vandalism measuresImprovements to the play area.
Recycling bins on the Car ParkThese bins are well used and are often full. This was especially true after the Christmas and New Year holidays. Please keep the areas around these tidy as piles of clothes and bags of bottles left outside the bins are unsightlyand can cause obstruction on the car park. Items left outside the bins are not taken away by the recyclingcompanies so if the bins are full please do not leave bags outside.

CLUB REPORTS
The Societys annual Christmas social was held on December 7th. After thesherry reception the assembled members and guests were informed by thechairman, Irene Oliver, that due to unforeseen circumstances the caterers had
cancelled at short notice. Consequently the usual cold buffet would be replaced by fish and chipsfollowed by desserts prepared and purchased by committee members. The assembly received thenews with good humour. After an excellent meal we were entertained by Mr Ed Shore who gavean illustrated talk on Living in Arizona. At the end of the evening Mrs Oliver gave special thanksto all those who had rallied round to rescue the evening from potential cancellation. Finally shewished everyone a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
The next meeting of the society is on Tuesday February 1st at which Mr Spencer Tricket will talkabout Witley Court - The House and Garden. All are welcome at St. Saviours Church Hall at 8.00p.m. Visitors £1.50 including refreshments.

HISTORICAL AND FIELD SOCIETY
We’ve had several excellent and informative speakers during the last two months,
on subjects such as:- Eradication of Polio (a major Rotary project worldwide),
Rotary in the West Midlands given by our District Governor (the most senior Rotarian in the
Midlands), the Alzheimer’s Society, and at our Christmas Party, Squadron Leader Pablo Mason
spoke about his exploits as a fighter pilot in the first Gulf War and compared it with his current job
as a commercial airline pilot.
We look forward to talks in the near future on the following subjects:- Worcester
Young Carers, Magistrates, Horse Racing and Action Heart.
In February 1905, Paul Harris with four of his business colleagues in Chicago, USA,
had the brilliant idea and vision of starting the first Rotary club. Little did he know that he was
founding what would become the largest service organisation in the world, with now nearly 1.3
million members in over 26,000 clubs. In the UK there are 65,000 members in 1,740 clubs. To
celebrate this important event we are having a dinner at the end of February with the Kidderminster
and Kinver clubs.
If you want to find out more about Rotary, please give me a call on 07966 116612
and come and join us for a free dinner one Monday evening at the Stone Manor Hotel.

CLUB REPORTS
The Annual General Meeting of the Club is held this month, Friday 11th,7.30 p.m. St Saviour’s Church Hall. Officers and committee stand downand nominations are put forward for the new committee to hold office fortwelve months. It is essential we have a vibrant and active committee tocarry us through our 16th year. The retiring committee have worked hard
during the year 2004 and there is an opportunity for others to take up the duties.
The Programme for 2005 has been arranged by our Programme Organiser, Roger Noons, which includes aSpring Day School planned for Saturday, 9th April, as detailed in Newsletter No 12 issued in January.Arranging a programme for a year is a demanding task and the membership should thank Roger Noons fordoing this so successfully each year.
After the business session of the AGM there will be a presentation by “Our Very Own - Bob Swingler”, soplease make the effort to come. The AGM allows members to make suggestions about ‘their club’ and itsdevelopment.
The subject for March is “Wildlife in Acrylic”, a demonstration by David Hydes on 11th March. March is alsothe month for members to renew their membership.
A.A. Pritchard(President)
ART CLUB
Our first meeting in 2005 will be our AGM followed by a speaker soplease come and join us.
February 23rd: Club member, Helen Hancox is goiung to take us on avisual walk around her lovely garden. helen is very knowledgeable so we

CLUB REPORTS
In early April we plan to stage two one act plays which will form agreat night’s entertainment. I should be able to give you a firm ideaof dates in the next issue of the Village News. These are about thetrials and tribulations of amateur dramatic groups trying to stage aproduction. It’s always great to be able to draw on experience! The
first of these is Last Tango in Little Grimley where an amateur group needs to take drasticmeasures to pull the audiences in. We thespians must bare more than our emotions for our art.The second, Easy Stages, examines the work of a little seen but vitally important back stagecrew as they prepare for their next production. It is very pleasing that some newcomers to ourgroup will be taking part in the mayhem.
We are of course very keen to see even more new members so come on give live theatre achance. If you are interested in any aspect of theatre from acting, stage management, props, prompting or even running the bar then please contact our Chairman Paula Knight on 01384894655.

ROTARACT CLUB2005 arrived with a bang with a brilliant new year’s party at Mark’s
house. The day after we had a lovely walk in the Lickey Hills which helped us
to adjust to the outside again. The next weekend we saw a fantastic production of Roald
Dahl’s Witches at Birmingham Rep, which brought our childhood book to life. The
weekend after we celebrated one of our members’ 30th birthday with an exquisite meal at
Va Bene. On the 22nd some of us went clubbing in Broad Street and had a great time
dancing the night away. On the last Friday of the month we toasted another great month
at the Severn Stars in Oldswinford.
February starts with a trip to Jongeleurs Comedy Club we where we hope to banish the
winter blues. On the 11th we are planning to celebrate the season of love, due to St
Valentine’s Day being so close, with a meal at Franzel’s Austrian restaurant. The next

HAGLEY PARISH PLANAt the time of writing this article work has started on the first draft of the Parish Plan. Itis hoped that by the spring copies will be circulated to both interested and statutorybodies for comments.
Public consultation is to be organised and the views of the parishioners will be sought.
Once the plan has been agreed and published in the autumn it will act as asupplementary guide in the planning process and be used as a reference document byplanners, both Parish and District Councils, developers and residents.
In the meantime thank you to the staff and children of Haybridge Year seven for theirwork on what they see as being important to Hagley and how they think Hagley could beimproved in the future. This has been summarised and will be incorporated in the finalplan.
If you would like to know more plase contact Steve Colella (882996).
KINGSWINFORD & STOURBRIDGE LIONS CLUB
Starting with an apology. Unfortunately we understand that our Santa Sleigh tripto Hagley was the third time that certain areas bad been hit before Christmas. This is to our embarrassment as we try to liaise with other organisations toprevent this sort of thing happening. All “service organisations” need to create
goodwill and a Santa Sleigh is an effective way of thanking people who have generously supportedother activities through the year. Although our Sleigh runs are licensed and permitted by the LocalAuthority we appreciate that it is not their duty to issue licences conditionally on routes only beingused once, this is a responsibility of the organising clubs. Many apologies to residents who wereoffended or angry at the intrusion into their evening, we will continue to try to resolve this problem.
Lions will put the sleigh in store after Christmas, then start re-fettling the catering caravan ready forinspection and duties during 2005. We have opportunity to review our programme of engagements forthe coming year and we can update our financial situation and assess our availability of funds to meetrequests during the coming year.
Any Hagley organisations or residents who require help or assistance please contact Kingswinford &Stourbridge Lions Club, in complete confidence, and a Lion will be delegated to visit and report backto club on how best we could assist.
We wish all our supporters in Hagley every good wish for the year 2005.Ray Robinson

The children are now concentrating on their academic work, particularlyMaths, Literacy and Science as well as their varied topics.
In this quieter news period we would like to take this opportunity to thankall the members and supporters of the Parent, Teachers and FriendsAssociation at Clent School who in the last financial year raised £7,500 for
the school. Considering we are a small school with only about 100 pupils this is a fantasticachievment. Our events have been incredibly varied, from the fun ‘themed’ parties in theVillage Hall, to the hard work by many at the Medieval Fayre and Christmas Market, to themore unusual Fashion Shows and (energetic) Sponsored Cycle Rides.
The PTFA have tried hard to spend the funds raised in line with our parents priorities, andwill again bE carrying out a survey to see what is now top of the ‘wish list’. Overall the aimremains that events should be good, fun social occasions when all the community of Clentand their friends can come together to generate money for the benefit of the children.
If you would like more information on our school at Clent please ring 01562 730668 for aprospectus and/or an appointment with the headteacher, Mrs Barbara Turner. Our emailaddress is [email protected]

SCHOOL NEWS
From Another Time....School Life in Victorian Hagley, derived from the Parish Magazine 1862
‘The management, discipline, teaching and attainments of the children in the Hagley School’,wrote a Victorian schools inspector in 1861, ‘are excellent’. Built and operated as a result of localphilanthropy – the money naturally enough came from the Lyttletons – the school providededucation for the children of small farmers, shopkeepers and tradesmen. In the early 1860s MrStephens was the schoolmaster and Miss Southall taught the infants. Mr Stephens also ran theHagley Club, a self improvement society of about 50 men dedicated to reading and playingcricket and chess. Miss Southall, who was paid only £10 a year plus something from the parents’fees, soon resigned and was replaced by Miss Unsworth. The Bible and the three Rs occupiedmuch of the time of the Hagley schoolchildren, but there was also time for useful relaxation -carpentry and gardening for the boys, needlework with Mrs Daphne for the girls. Some of thepupils went into service in Hagley - others found employment as carpenters, clerks and railwayservants.

SCHOOL NEWS
Our annual Christmas Celebration was an inspiring combination of poetry, song, dance and prayerwhich helped the community to mediate upon the generosity of God.
Many pupils have sent cards to prisoners of conscience as part of Amnesty International’s Christmas campaign. Thisshows their concern for those in need throughout the world.
During the Autumn Term we have managed to secure £30,000 worth of sponsorship to support our application forSpecialist Arts School Status. We are very grateful to local firms and organisations, eg The Umberto Giannini Group, who have taken the opportunity to raise their profile by donating generously. We would like to hear from anybusinesses or individuals who would be willing to support this exciting venture. We would also be very interested tohear from any performing or visual arts group who believe that our Arts Status could support the development oftheir members.
We are delighted that the Mary Stevens Hospice have included recipes from our pupils in their Recipe Book whichhas been produced to raise money for terminally ill patients. These can be bought from the Mary Stevens HospiceShop in Stourbridge or from the Mary Stevens Hospice, 221 Hagley Road.

HAGLEY RC HIGH SCHOOL
The Christmas period saw a great deal of activity at Haybridge with the music department
taking centre stage. The annual Christmas Concert was a great success as usual with the
school hall packed for an evening of music to put everyone in the festive spirit. The students
also put their musical talents to good use in order to entertain members of the community in
the Hand of Friendship concert.
Our teachers were not to be outdone and the staff pantomime was a memorable way to end the term. With
three performances on consecutive days all our students had an opportunity to enjoy the show and the
pantomime raised over £300 for charity.
Haybridge has also recently been exploring new ways of using technology to enhance teaching and learning
and the advent of Virtual Workspace is proving to be valuable for our students. The system allows students to
create a personalised Web space for schoolwork, homework and leisure interests, accessible at any time from
any Internet-enabled computer. It allows teachers to view and mark stdents’ work online as well as offering
students the opportunity to liaise with mentors in any subject. Students also gain credit for all the work they
complete on the system and can use these credits to gain rewards such as compact discs.

CLUB REPORTS
UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGEJanuary saw us back to work after the Christmas festivities. Not the
least of these was our party with a retro fashion parade where we
were amazed and envious to find that one of our members could still fit her charming mini dress
worn for her 21st birthday party (it was, for fashion followers who read this, pale blue georgette
with applique daisies) as well as her wedding dress. It was not all glamour, as an apron, hand
made in school, took many of us back to stern needlework teachers insisting on small stitches.
The U3A learning groups are less demanding if often as rigorous and, in addition, for our general
meeting in January, we were urged both to walk and at the same time brush up our history as
Trevor Antill spoke about the Monarch’s Way, the journey made by Charles the Second as he fled
in 1651 from defeat at Worcester. A route of 610 miles travels first through our local countryside
and passes many important buildings and though we could only follow through Trevor, a third of
the route, we all learned a great deal and some of us will surely have been inspired to follow in
the King’s footsteps.

RUACH KARATE CLUBTo regular readers of this article I can only say that, as a newcomer to the demandsof the Village News over the Christmas and New Year period, I promise to get itright next time.
A senior instructor, when asked, “What Karate meant to him”, replied – “It is theeducation of people, learning a deeper meaning and purpose of respect in allsituations, to have gratitude for everything – the good as the bad experiences andstaying in good health by living simply. My art is health by training, overcoming thedifficulties, discovering yourself”.
Another instructor when asked on the qualities of a good leader replied – “The mostimportant requirement of a leader is intelligence for without that no man or womancan acquire the qualities that make a true leader. Most Black Belts have enoughintelligence to lead. The fact that they have shown the diligence to study longenough to gain a Dan proves that.
Do you want to have health by training, have you the diligence and intelligence tobecome a black belt? Need a challenge, discover yourself? See you next Mondaynight at Haybridge High School 7.00 pm. All ages are welcome.
