Spiritual Growth in 2017 As we enter this great year of 2017, hopefully we will set priorities that will make us better people in service to the Lord and to each other. My goal in this article is to encourage each of us to set the goal of growing spiritually. Peter's basic message in 2 Peter is found in 2 Peter 3:18. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. The very purpose of our growth is to bring glory and honor to the Lord. The Bible teaches us that glorifying God is one of the chief priorities of creation. Psalm 19:1 states, The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Isaiah 43:20 declares, The wild beasts will honor me..." Luke 2:14 teaches that angels stated Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased! As we grow, we will be transformed more into the image of Christ. It is a process that involves us in the glory of the Lord. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. How amazing is it that we can be transformed from one degree or level of glory to another as we grow or as we are transformed. The power behind spiritual growth is the Lord who is the Spirit. He energizes our growth; He gives life--and life is growth. As the Lord infuses our lives with His power, He causes us to grow into the image of Christ from one level of glory to the next. But there is one condition: we must gaze into the glory of the Lord. As we focus on God's glory, the Spirit of God energizes the process of spiritual growth. The point is, in order to grow spiritually, you must focus on God's glory. Don't worry about what the Lord does, just focus on the glory of the Lord. That is the ultimate reason for living and the master key to spiritual growth. However, if we are going to grow, we must have a great desire to do so. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation... (I Peter 2:2) In 2017 may each of us desire to grow spiritually and when we do, we will bring glory and honor to God.

When we look around us at other people, we often notice our many differences. Some people are tall, others are short. Some are big and some are small. People come in a lot of different colors. People talk differently. Some talk in the same language but have very different accents. When you travel, you discover that people speak in many different languages. People have different personalities. Some talk constantly, others rarely speak. Some laugh most of the time, others are serious a lot. People have different interests and talents. Some love sports, some hate sports. Some love to travel, others love to stay home. Stop here and take your Bible and read 1 Corinthians 9:19-23. We often allow our differences to keep us apart. Paul emphasized in 1 Corinthians 9 that though he may be very different from other people, he would consciously try to become like them in order to reach them for Christ. Isn’t that what missionaries to other countries do? They learn different languages, learn different customs, learn to eat different food, all to reach people for Christ who are very different from the missionary. Paul said that if he came across a Jew, he became as a Jew. If he came across a Gentile, he became as a Gentile. To the weak he became as one who is weak. What does this mean? Did Paul have no convictions? Did he just go around changing his beliefs to fit in with everyone? Was Paul like a chameleon, changing colors to blend in wherever he was? No, we know that Paul was a man of solid convictions who was willing to die for his beliefs (Galatians 1:6-10; 2:20; Philippians 1:20). Paul was reaching out to others to build a bridge, to establish a friendship and create a relationship of trust. To form a friendship, it takes effort. We have to show an interest in others. As Paul would say, we must become like them. For some people this is very difficult. If you tend to be shy, this is challenging. If you tend to stay with the same familiar circle of friends, this is hard. If you have a limited area of interests, you may have no interest in expanding and learning about the interests of people who are very different than you. On Sunday, January 29th, Lovell Hayes from the East Jackson Church of Christ will be with us all day discussing the subject of evangelism. All of us should consider what we are doing individually, as well as congregationally in regards to evangelism. In order to practice what Paul meant by “becoming all things to all men,” we must learn to step away from ourselves. We need to develop a genuine interest in others. It starts with asking people about themselves, listening carefully to what they say, and being truly interested in them. This may seem difficult sometimes but it is really just the simple process of becoming a friend with another person.

Youth Notes Jared Gott

Quick Announcements:

Evangelism University- This Friday, we head out for Evangelism University. This is a great event every year, preparing our youth group to go out and tell others about the Gospel. Students who are going will need clothes for the weekend, a Bible, bathroom items, stuff to take notes with, and $40 for food for the weekend. Please pray for growth from our youth group members during this weekend.

Senior Dinner- One of our big service projects this month will be the dinner for our senior adults on January 28th. The theme this year is Once Upon a Time. Daughters and Moms, if you are able and willing we will need volunteers to help decorate the tables for the dinner. Make plans to be there and help wait tables, refill drinks, greet, etc.

Friendsday Wednesday- Next Wednesday night, the 18th, will be our first Friendsday Wednesday. Come up to the building at 6:00 for pizza and a time of hanging out before we go up to class. BRING A FRIEND! Guys bring drinks. Girls bring desserts. This is a great way to introduce someone to our group and spend some time together before going into Bible class. Hope you’ll be there! #52Lights Readings- Keep reading. One chapter a week. You can do this! Hope that you have an awesome week!

Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. – 1 Timothy 4:12
