Investigation of Four Food Complaints from April 2012 to March 2013

Nobuo TAGUCHIa, Toshiko SHIMOIa, Kimiko KANa and Mitsuo OISHIa

We investigated the cause of four food complaints from April 2012 to March 2013. (1) A boiled, young yellowtail that was bought

in the market smelled of chemicals. The compound p-dichlorobenzene was detected on a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer. The possibility that p-dichlorobenzene that had vaporized from insect repellent or clothing near the food, which then adsorbed the off-flavor substances was considered. (2) Imported oatmeal in a plastic bag smelled like mint. After ingestion, the throat and mouth became numb. Methyl methacrylate, hexanal, -pinene, -pinene, dl-limonene and 1,8-cineole were detected by a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer. The possibility that easily vaporized compounds were put near the bag of oatmeal, which then adsorbed the evaporated gas passing through the bag, was considered. (3) A glass-like substance was found in pork bought at a meat shop. It was suggested that the foreign matter was fragments of crystal glass based on results obtained by X-ray fluorescence analysis and microscopy. The cause of this crystal contamination was unknown. (4) A foreign substance similar to a wood chip was found in the Julienne cabbage bought at a convenience store. The results obtained by the infrared spectrophotometer and microscopy suggested that it was a vascular bundle from the core of the cabbage.
