T he Jewish people couldn’t wait for

the Messiah to come. The prophets had prom-ised that when he did arrive, things would be very different and it would be a time of great rejoicing. Isaiah paints a picture of blind people seeing once more, deaf people hearing again and disabled people jumping like deer. There was a tremendous feel-ing of longing and yearn-

ing for the Messiah, es-pecially since the land was currently occupied by a foreign army.

So when Jesus appears on the scene people begin to wonder whether or not he might be the Messiah they were ex-pecting. By the end of today’s gospel they have made their minds up.

“He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak”, they say, quot-ing what Isaiah had pre-dicted would happen.

Jesus hasn’t gone away. He’s still with us till the end of time through the Spirit. So what about these “happy days”, these Messianic signs? Have they disappeared? Or is Jesus still doing “all things well”?

T o have faith means to see

and hear things differ-ently. We often speak about people having the eyes of faith. It doesn’t mean that they see dif-ferent things but that they are able to see things in a different per-spective, from God’s perspective. That’s why when they see grief and suffering they feel the same pity as an atheist but they are able to see beyond the grave. When they walk in the country-side and listen to the singing of the birds they are aware of nature but they know that there is someone who created our natural world around

us.

Faith in Jesus the Mes-siah opens our eyes to what lies beyond physi-cal sight; it opens our ears to hear good news in the midst of the world’s troubles; it pro-

vides us with a cause for joy because it reminds us that God will not abandon us.

The Jewish people did not fear the coming of the Messiah, because they had an expectant hope that he would set them free from all that prevented them from living the life that their God had promised them. Christians too welcome Jesus as Messiah, for he comes to set us free, to release us from a blurred vision of our world, from being deaf to the voice of God in our surroundings. He invites us to sing for joy!

HAPPY DAYS FAITH IN FOCUS:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As you know from previous pastoral letters and articles in the LINK I have been consulting with the priests as to making necessary changes in Mass times in order to enable priests to cover for each other’s absences. This has been part of a bigger review that I am undertaking for the whole Diocese. You may also be aware that there are currently three parishes without a resident priest and I have only been able to maintain Mass there through the generosity of the retired priests of the Diocese and a bit of ‘mixing and matching’ by some others. It is in the interests of each and every one of us and my responsibility to do the best for the health and wellbeing of every priest. It is also the right of every priest to have time off and to take a holiday; fewer priests in the Diocese make this more and more challenging and difficult to ar-range. I have therefore decided that for the time being and without prejudice to any future chang-es within the Deanery and across the Diocese the Mass times in Buckley and Mold parishes will have to change in order to retain your op-portunities to celebrate Mass on the Lord’s Day and that your priests get a holiday this autumn.

From the weekend of 19th/20th Sep-

tember the Mass times in these two parishes will be as follows: Saturday (Vigil Mass of Sunday) 5.30pm Mold Sunday morning

9 o’clock Buckley 11 o’clock Mold Sunday evening 5 o’clock Buckley I know this will not suit everyone and I am sorry for the inconvenience it may cause. I am though most grateful to you for accepting the changes and to your priests for agreeing to celebrate the extra Masses when necessary to ensure you have a choice of Mass times in your Parish and Church. Please be assured of my continued prayers. With every good wish and blessings, † Peter Brignall, Bishop of Wrexham

SVP Awareness Month

The St. Vincent de Paul Society

in England and Wales has around 10,000 members who, last year, made over

500,000 visits to those in need.

September is SVP Awareness month and the theme this year is ''Happy Families?". Each week throughout the month there will be a changing set of posters pinned to our notice board in the porch.

Could I ask you to take a moment to view them. Finding, loving and serving God in our communities is fundamental to the society's work.. The SVP is always in need of new members to carry out this work. I would like to invite any parishioners; young, old, male or female, who would wish to find out more about the work of St. David's SVP conference, to come to an 'open meeting' in the convent on Tues-day 22nd September at 7.30pm. You will be made very welcome.

Brian Cullen - President.
