Note: Charles Henry Davis (1807-1887) was a Rear Admiral inthe United States Navy. His early career was spent asMidshipman and Passed Midshipman on the USS United Statesand USS Ontario. From 1846-1849, he worked with the UnitedStates Costal Survey on board USS Nantucket, where hissuccesses included the discovery of a previously unknown shoalthat had caused shipwrecks off the New York coast. During theCivil War, Davis was commander of the Mississippi Flotilla,engaged in the Battle of Memphis and the Battle of Vicksburg.The Congressional Directory lists Davis as Superintendent of theUnited States Naval Observatory (from 1865-67) at GeorgetownHeights.

Provenance: Given to a McDonnell Douglas employee whoworked on the project. Project Mercury was the first humanspaceflight program in the United States. Named after the RomanGod, Mercury, who embodied speed, and the innermost planet ofthe solar system, which moves faster than any other, it ran from1959 to 1963 and was officially conducted by the then newly-created N.A.S.A.

Mercury had seven prime astronauts, all former military testpilots, who became known as the Mercury Seven. Their selectionwas announced on April 9, 1959: Malcolm Scott Carpenter,Leroy Gordon “Gordo” Cooper, John Herschel Glenn, Jr., VirgilIvan “Gus” Grissom, Walter Marty Schirra, Alan Bartlett Shepard,and Donald K. “Deke” Slayton.

Note: Project Gemini was the second U.S. human spaceflightprogram, whose objective was developing the techniques foradvanced space travel that would eventually facilitate a moonlanding. Originally seen as an extension of the Mercury Program(see the previous lot), it fell historically between Projects Mercuryand Apollo. There were ten manned flights between 1965 and1966. The accompanying tag documents the ball’s use on theflight of March 3, 1965, which included astronauts CommanderVirgi “Gus” Grissom and Co-Pilot John Young, and lasted forthree orbits. The ball, referred to on the tag as the “UnsinkableMolly Brown,” was removed from the the GT-3 reaction controlsystem on March 26, 1965.

The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land onthe Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of the Apolloprogram, and the third human voyage to the moon. Launchedon July 16, 1969, it was manned by Commander Neil AldenArmstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and LunarModule Pilot Edwin Eugene “Buzz” Aldrin, Jr. Four days later,on July 20, 1969, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humansto land on the Moon, while Collins orbited above.

The inscription is to “Arlene,” a N.A.S.A. hostess whoentertained astronauts and their families at parties in her homenear Houston in the 1960s.

Note: Raising or lowering the lid and back alters the amount oflight entering the box, transforming views from day to night bymeans of pinholes cut in the paper to simulate lighted windows orthe moon, illuminating colored fireworks, or in some casesaltering the scene altogether. This latter effect is achieved byoverlaying one view onto another, in the case of thetransformation of Somerset House by day into the romantic ruinsof Barnard Castle by night. Le Peintre depicts an artist at work ina landscape and in his studio, where he paints by lamplight themountainous scene that he had previously observed.
