PASTORS PONDERINGS PENSAMIENTOS DE NUESTRO PARROCO

Dear Parishioners, This Sunday, we find ourselves on the Second Sunday of a familiar yearly journey. Last week with after many weeks everything in our Church changed. The familiar green colors of the church were replaced by purple and our primary Liturgical symbol for the season became the Advent wreath with its four candles to help us count down the Sundays to Christmas. The Readings last Sunday remind-ed of the time that the Israelites had to wait for the arrival of Jesus and we were reminded that Jesus will one day come again, and so to “keep watch.” This week we’re introduced to one of the two main figures im-mediately preceding the arrival of Jesus – John the Baptist, who we remember as Jesus’ cousin. The other figure, is of course Mary, Jesus’ mother, who we’ll remember throughout the Ad-vent Season – as we celebrate the Immaculate Conception and even Our Lady of Guadalupe – but she’ll make a definitive en-trance into our Advent Liturgies on the fourth Sunday of Ad-vent. But we get ahead of ourselves; this Sunday and next we focus on John the Baptist. This week, we still see John the Baptist from afar as a “voice crying in the wilderness.” If our world was fallen and the Isra-elites became increasingly convinced that only the arrival of The Messiah, the Anointed One could fix it, we can understand the cry of John the Baptism out “in the middle of nowhere” both calling out to God (“Help us”) and calling out to the peo-ple “Prepare the Way for the Lord.” At times, when we’re par-ticularly frustrated with the way things are, the limits and the failings of our world, we too “cry out to the Lord” (“Help us / help me”) and perhaps offer a plan to “make things right.” But what strikes me this year is both John the Baptist’s Faith and his Humility. If we take seriously his background, he would have been the son of a Temple Priest, Zachariah, hence would have been in line to be a Temple Priest as well. Thus, he would have lived “quite well.” And from his comfortable exist-ence, he could have proclaimed all sorts of useful strategies to “bring the people closer to God / each other” (I myself like to proclaim those goals with those words…). Instead, John the Baptism left his comfortable life be-hind, went out into the Desert and from There proclaimed a quite simple yet certainly direct program of simply knocking _everything down_ to “make way for the Lord.” What things in our lives to we have to “knock down” to make way for the Lord this Advent Season? -- Fr. Dennis

- P. Dennis

The Little Ones Living God’s Word

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

NEWS OF COMFORT

Second Sunday of Advent

Many people think that Saint Francis originated the Christmas crèche, but its origins go far back. The Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome has housed what is said to be relics of the cradle of Jesus since the seventh century. In time, every year during the Christmas season the reliquary (container for relics) was surrounded by an increasingly grand three-dimensional scene of the place of Jesus’ birth. Rocks and trees, houses, streams, figurines of villagers going about their daily tasks were all included. It was a very dramatic presentation. If you’ve ever seen an elaborate model train installation, you get the idea. The proper term for this depiction is presepio, from the Latin word for “surround” or “hedge.” Over the centuries, the custom spread first to churches, and then to aristocratic homes. In Italy, whole chapels are often set aside for the presepio, and it is not unusual to have hundreds of figures. It can sometimes be a challenge to locate the Holy Family amid the crowd, almost like a Where’s Waldo? children’s book. The oldest surviving presepio is in St. Mary Major and dates from the thirteenth centu-ry, although many pieces have been broken or lost. Saint Francis of Assisi took a decidedly creative step in 1233 in the village of Greccio, when he directed his followers to fill a manger with hay and tether an ox and ass nearby. He then invited the villagers to attend Mass outdoors near the crib, the worshipers themselves becoming a living presepio. By the seventeenth century, the tradition was well-established, particularly in Naples, and had a firm hold in Portugal, Spain, and in the Provence region of France. Today, it is not unusual to find presepios with five hundred figures, a vivid reminder of Emmanuel, God-with-us! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, “Comfort, give comfort to my peo-ple, / says your God” (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas prepara-tions, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreci-ate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limitations. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentiveness to our God and to our deepest inner longings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. The savior we have awaited is coming, not the first time, but in the end times, as our salvation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

First Reading — The rugged land shall be made a plain; the rough country, a broad valley — (Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11). Psalm — Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation — (Psalm 85). Gospel — I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit — (Mark 1:1-8).

When EVERYONE will have to do their part.

The Bible tells us to Tithe (give 10% or 4 hours of our weekly income to God). Realizing that this would be hard for most Catho-lics, the Catholic Church asks us to give 5% or 2 hours of our weekly income to the Church.

Can you give 2 hours of your weekly income to support the Church?

If not, can you give at least 1 hour of your weekly income whatever it may be (2.5% or ¼ of the Biblical Tithe)?

For years, everybody considered St. Philip’s finances to be hopeless. But they are not, not even in the long term. But every fami-ly needs to do its part.

If every family contributed 1 hour of its weekly income, again whatever it would be, to the Parish, we would have no problems at all, ever, balancing our finances.

Instead, we have 50 families (out of 1600) covering 40% of our collection while over 50% our families give less than $5/week. This is neither particularly just, nor honestly, sustainable.

So let us ALL step up, do our part and be able to hold our heads high as we continue our Journey as a Parish toward our Destiny that awaits us in Heaven.

STEWARDSHIP The Hour is Coming

GRACIAS

Amen
