IT’S NOT WHERE YOU START – IT’S WHERE YOU FINISH

Towards the end of September we looked at the leagues that are on par with our own Premier Division and the Clubs occupying bottom place in their respective League Tables. Now, two months on, we can look at Part 2 to see how many have improved their position. LEAGUE CLUB SEPTEMBER NOVEMBER Played Pts Played Pts Position Combined Counties Banstead 7 1 16 13 19th Eastern Counties Thetford Town 10 1 19 21 12th Essex Senior League Sawbridgeworth Town 7 0 16 5 last Hellenic League Royal Wootton Bassett 5 2 16 15 17th Midland League Boldmere St Michaels 6 2 16 22 10th North West Counties Litherland REMYCA 7 3 15 8 last Northern Counties East Athersley Recreation 7 1 14 4 last Northern League Thornaby 7 4 13 14 16th Southern Combination Loxwood 9 4 14 5 last Southern Counties East Punjab United 7 2 14 12 15th Spartan South Midlands North Greenford United 5 1 15 2 last United Counties Sleaford Town 7 0 13 0 last Western League Wellington 7 3 17 10 20th As stressed previously this is by no means an attempt to belittle the Clubs shown above – somebody has to finish bottom – but it does show how positions can change and that there is always hope. The majority of the Leagues have twenty Clubs but there are a couple with nineteen or twenty one. Nine Clubs have improved their position but seven are still struggling - though there is time yet - but it would appear that Sleaford Town and North Greenford United have a lot to do in their respective Leagues. A further look in another couple of months.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Mike Fowler writes CHRISTCHURCH 1-2 DOWNTON HOSTS Christchurch bowed out of the Bournemouth Saturday Senior Cup in the second round when Tom Moseley struck four minutes from time to give Downton the verdict 2-1. Christchurch were going into the game on the back of a seven game unbeaten run in all competitions but their Wessex League Division One opponents were to prove a tough nut to crack.

Downton opened the scoring after 25 minutes when a corner from the left eluded Christchurch goalkeeper Max Frampton and the visitors’ central defender Dan SAVAGE was on hand to head the ball past the defenders on the line. Max WILCOCK put Christchurch on terms five minutes before the interval when he rounded off an excellent move by applying the finishing touch to a cross from the right. HT 1-1 Just when it looked as though it would take a penalty shoot out to decide the issue, MOSELEY got behind the Christchurch defence to drill the winner past Frampton. FT 1-2 Mike Robins writes WIMBORNE TOWN 5-1 SHAFTESBURY KICKING towards the Hospital End, the Rockies took an early lead when a poorly timed challenge sent Aaron Lane-Laney tumbling to the turf and Sam HERRINGTON duly converted to give the visitors a goal lead. Unfortunately for the visitors that was probably the best phase of the game for them, as former members Wimborne gradually got back on top and found themselves camped in the opposition half for long periods and but for some fine goalkeeping from Dan Card the score could have easily got into double figures. As it was, the main threat from the Magpies was from Luke Burbidge, twice denied a goal on the quarter hour and on 21 a rasping shot from distance went just wide, he found the net on 24 minutes. Rounding

Shaftesbury skipper Jack Vallis, he was forced wide but still managed to get his shot home from eight yards to level the tie. Wimborne got their heads in front just shy of the half hour with Will PRIOR getting his name on the scoresheet from close range. Despite having numerous opportunities to increase the lead Wimborne found the Shaftesbury keeper in good form as he made a string of saves as the half finished with the hosts in control. HT 2-1 From the resumption, BURBIDGE put the

game beyond Shaftesbury’s reach on 56 minutes firing home from a tight angle with the shot barely raising above ankle level. Burbidge was again instrumental in the fourth when his free kick went over the wall and was clipped home by the unmarked Will FLETCHER. With a couple of minutes left youngster Addwell CHIPANGURA added a fifth rounded off proceedings. FT 5-1 John Gorman writes ANDOVER NEW STREET 2-1 LYMINGTON TOWN PROBABLY the coldest evening of the season to date and in front of by a long way their smallest attendance, Andover New Street came from behind to defeat Premier Division Lymington Town by two goals to one and move in to the last eight of the Hampshire Senior Cup. While the weather no doubt contributed to the drop in attendance there does overall seem to be a certain amount of apathy towards Cup Competitions from spectators in general. The game took a long time to get going, causing one to question the wisdom of venturing out, but improved and the second half was well up on the entertainment scale. Ilyas Warshow’s pace won the home side a corner which visiting keeper Ross Casey clawed away from under his crossbar and home debutant Finley Hall was too high after meeting a Warshow cross. Street were largely enjoying more of the possession with Jazz Beavis firing inches wide but were forced in to a substitution midway through the half as Luke Hooper

replaced Warshow – very much like for like. The first real chance fell to Lymington when Steve Flynn, normally lethal in such situations, fastened on to a dreadful back pass but hit advancing keeper Chris Wing’s legs with the ball rebounding to safety. Lewis Alderman, back in the home ranks after a lengthy absence, was cautioned for a challenge on the touchline and was then, in effect, punished twice over. The resulting free kick was cleared at the expense of a corner from which Tim STEPHENSON planted a free header past Wing to give his side the lead some six minutes before the break. Lymington had been coming more and more in to the game as the half progressed and now headed for the warming half time tea a goal to the good. HT 0-1 Lymington started the second half as they had finished the first with a free kick rebounding off the defensive wall and a snap shot on the turn by Harvey Elsom well saved by Wing. At the other end Shane Lock was denied twice in quick succession by Casey, the second a quick reaction after the shot was deflected, before Elsom was again close as his header flashed just the wrong side of the post. Casey clawed away a fierce cross shot from Hooper and Lymington wasted a chance when allowed to run on from a position that was clearly offside but the Assistant was badly out of sync with the last defender. With half an hour gone on the clock New Street were suddenly level as Lock’s clever pass gave HOOPER the time and space to control the ball and shoot across Casey in to the far corner. Flynn was halted by a correct, but very late, offside flag before only five minutes after drawing level the home side were ahead. Again, Lock was the supplier, his cross from the left clearing the crowded area and allowing HALL to mark his debut with a cool finish at the far post. The game was played throughout in fine spirit, though the Assistant was surely incorrect in ignoring an isolated unsavoury incident that occurred in front of him, and the final few minutes very much belonged to Lymington as they almost frantically sought the equaliser. Flynn showed superb control but only for Wing to turn the shot round the post with the keeper saving twice more in the scramble that ensued after the corner. Two more corners came to nothing and it was perhaps fitting that the final whistle followed another save from Wing that denied Flynn both the equaliser and his usually inevitable goal. Lymington will probably feel that they did enough to win the tie but New Street are adept at coming back in the late stages of a game – a point proved by a 96th minute winner at Newport last Saturday – and the visitors were perhaps guilty of sitting back once they had gone ahead. New Street did not win on a “Wing and a Prayer” – to quote the American Marching Song but the goalkeeper more than played his part in the closing stages. An enjoyable game on a cold, but thankfully wind free, evening. FT 2-1

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

A real miscellany on offer with sixteen games scheduled over nine Competitions though this was reduced to fifteen when the Aldershot Senior Cup Tie between Fleet Town and Staines Town was postponed for reasons that are none too clear. It all kicked off on Monday at the usual Monday Venue of Test Park where Solent University turned League Form on its head with a 3-1 win over Brockenhurst in the Southampton Senior Cup, a Competition that the home side have always held dear. On to Tuesday and two League fixtures, one in each Division. In the Premier Fareham’s run of form continued and they climbed five places in the Table to seventh after a 3-0 win over Horndean, the goals coming from Lewis Stockford, Archie Wilcox and Luke Slade. In Division One Will Berry gave Fawley an early lead at Romsey before a second half goal from Harry Draycott levelled the scores and added to the visitors already lengthy list of drawn games. From the League to the League Cup and three Third Round ties that saw AFC Stoneham, Hamble Club and Totton & Eling progress to the last eight. Stoneham and Bemerton Heath shared four goals over the course of ninety minutes but the “Purples” held sway in the penalty shoot-out, converting four to their opponents three. Will Webb gave Petersfield an early lead at Hamble Club before goals from John McKie and Jordan Ragguette saw the Premier Division side home but it was a different story at Westwood Park where Cowes

Sports, having seemingly picked up in the League recently, went down 4-1 to Division One Totton & Eling. A superb outcome for the “Millers”, whose recent results have perhaps not matched their performances, and the four different scorers were no doubt toasted on the ride home. Two games in the Hampshire Senior Cup and two good results for the winners. Bashley made the long journey to the very North of the County and defeated Southern League Premier Hartley Wintney by the odd goal in seven, helped by two goals from Harry Bunce, and Andover New Street came from behind to beat Lymington by two goals to one. Skipper Tim Stephenson gave the Premier Division side a half time lead before goals from Luke Hooper and debutant Finley Hall ensured New Street’s name would be in the draw for the next Round. Three ties in the Dorset Senior Cup and a lot of goals. Dorchester scored seven without reply against Hamworthy United (whose Reserves scored six at the same time at the County Ground) and Wimborne Town proved too strong for Shaftesbury, winning 5-1 after a Sam Herrington penalty had given the Sydenhams side the lead. Verwood may be struggling for results in the League but are finding this Competition to their liking and are now the league’s only representative in the next round draw following their 4-2 win over Western League Premier Division outfit Bridport at Potterne Park. Callum Butler claimed the headlines with a hat trick for the “Potters” with Lee Vint adding his customary goal. Christchurch were bought down to earth after their weekend Vase exploits as Division One promotion contenders Downton knocked them out of the Bournemouth Senior Cup with Max Wilcock’s goal not enough as Tom Moseley and Dan Savage netted for the visitors. Still two more Cups with two late goals giving AFC Totton victory over Alresford in the Southampton Senior Cup and Alton defeating Combined Counties side Guildford City by three goals to one in the Aldershot Senior Cup with George Bowerman scoring twice. The final game, and the only one scheduled for Wednesday was the North Hants Cup Semi Final between Whitchurch and Tadley fell victim to a frozen pitch further reducing the number of games played. Summing up, congratulations to six of our member clubs with victories over clubs of a higher status- Totton & Eling in the League Cup, Andover New Street and Bashley in the Hampshire Senior Cup, Verwood Town in the Dorset Senior Cup, and are our last representatives in that competition. Downton in the Bournemouth Senior Cup and lastly Alton in the Aldershot Senior Cup. So, after this week’s cup action, here’s a quick round up of the stages reached in some of the competitions.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Roger Allen writes BROCKENHURST 0-1 AFC STONEHAM This was the first meeting between these two sides for a very long time but Brockenhurst will not have met an opposition that was prepared to work so hard to get a well-earned victory. The goal that won the game came early in the 10th minute and was well worked. Alex Welch won the ball close to the right corner flag and fed the ball along the line to Marcel Laptas. He floated a ball to the far post where Callum LAYCOCK was unmarked and was left with a simple header. Seconds later Stoneham had a penalty shout that was turned down by the referee. The game settled with even possession but Stoneham were able to cope with the home side's attacks and central defenders Matt Palmer and Ben Clarke were outstanding all afternoon. For their part Stoneham carried a little more threat as they worked the wings to make progress. The best chance for the remainder of the half fell to Laycock after a neat turn and shot that Brock keeper Jon Webb saved with his feet. HT 0-1 The second half had more goalmouth incidents, the first of which fell to Edu Jiminez whose shot was touched over by Webb. At the other end Will Tickle, who had come on as a substitute at half time, floated over a cross-come-shot that drifted just wide of the far post. On 70 minutes Stoneham were reduced to 10 men when Will Wiseman committed a foul that drew a second yellow card. From the resulting free kick Stoneham's defence held firm despite having to make two goal line saves. As time began to run out the home side made one last push for an equaliser as both Jude Nwachukwu and Pat Wilson headed wide. They had one last chance as Mitch Speechley-Price pounced on a back pass but in taking it wide round the keeper he ran out of room. FT 0-1

John Gorman writes WHITCHURCH UNITED 2-3 ANDOVER NEW STREET A local derby, the two sides level on points and on the fringe of the promotion race, no weather problems everything set for an enjoyable game and afternoon – but sadly that was not the case, The game, especially the first half, was marred by too many free kicks and too many players tumbling over at the slightest contact with the two physios spending almost as much time on the pitch as they did in the dugouts. Add to this the

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 23

perpetual whingeing, mainly from the home side, and there was not a lot of time for any football of any consequence. New Street looked the stronger at the start with Jazz Beavis suffering three clumsy challenges in as many minutes before they gave the ball away in midfield but home striker Declan Shuttleworth was crowded out. With just six minutes gone the visitors scored – eventually – with their first real attack. Shane Lock made ground on the left, the cross was handled and the referee, well placed, pointed to the spot. Cue a mass protest by the home side, and a long delay through a conversation between referee and goalkeeper before BEAVIS sent the spot kick high in to the net. The next attack was almost a carbon copy except the offence was just outside the area and keeper Konrad Szymaniak athletically tipped Luke Hooper’s free kick over the bar, but only after the home defence and referee had lengthily debated exactly what constituted ten yards. Whitchurch wasted a couple of free kicks from promising positions before Shuttleworth missed by inches with goalkeeper Chris Wing struggling to cover his ground, Szymaniak inexplicably threw the ball straight to a white shirt but redeemed himself by saving Hooper’s shot and the follow up and after another poor clearance he turned a third Hooper effort round the post. The constant stoppages came and went and as the home side sought an equaliser Liam Hunt saw a shot deflected just past the post, Shuttleworth was crowded out and Wing claimed two corners in quick succession before the pressure told five minutes before the break. A neat through ball found SHUTTLEWORTH clear in what was once known as the “inside right channel”, the defence hesitated – perhaps thinking of offside - and the striker superbly curled the ball over the advancing goalkeeper. No further threats on either goal in the time remaining and the half time whistle was probably welcomed by most. HT 1-1 It looked like more of the same on the re-start when there was some “hassle” on the far side that again attracted the attention of almost the entire home side but was quickly resolved with a couple of lectures and a caution and then a game of football broke out. Wing twice denied Shuttleworth, once well outside his area, and when a bad pass gave Lloyd Thompson a chance Wing came out on top again. Hooper was replaced by Ilyas Warshow before Whitchurch, having had most of the play, found themselves behind after seventeen minutes. A corner on the right cleared the mass of players in the six yard box and was headed home, unchallenged, by Alex DOCKREE at the far post, to their credit the home side responded immediately and within two minutes the scores were level again. Liam HUNT collected the ball just outside the “D”, the defence did a personable impersonation of the Red Sea and the finish was competent and cool. There was almost a third as Wing pushed a shot from Malin Bowman against the post and reacted quickly to save the second attempt before New Street went ahead again with twenty five minutes played. Lock’s diagonal cross from the right was missed by a line of three defenders and Jason SILVER beat Szymaniak from some eight yards. New Street were now largely on top though the home side could never be discounted before sadly the game reverted to first half mode. Again it was on the far side of the pitch but it did look a bad challenge that left a home player on the ground and caused another noisy red and white gathering around the referee. A yellow card was the punishment – perhaps it could have been red – before the injured player was carried off on a stretcher and one can only hope the injury is not serious. Both sides then finished the game with ten men as the sin bin became populated and five minutes stoppage time made no difference to the scoreline. New Street will be delighted with the three points, Whitchurch may well feel they deserved a share of same but the attitude at times of the players, though never even approaching nasty, left a lot to be desired, Professional Football in this day and age has a lot to answer for. And it was cold! FT 2-3

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

We’ll start in Hampshire, where just two league games were played. Basement side Liss won at Locks Heath 2-1 whilst Stockbridge netted five without reply at Sway. With both Hamworthy Recreation and Gillingham Town in Dorset Senior Trophy action and Merley’s game postponed Balti Sports closed order with a 5-1 win over Sherborne’s second team, Dorchester Sports won by the odd goal in five at Sturminster Newton and Westlands bagged three without replay in Yeovil against Corfe Castle. Meanwhile in Wiltshire, Wroughton extended their lead to four points courtesy of a 4-1 home win over Marlborough Town. Corsham and Shrewton weren’t in league action so there was some advantage taken by Purton who also won 4-1 at Stratton Juniors and Kintbury who saw off Ludgershall 5-1. The only game played in the Wyvern saw Poole Town bag a 6-3 win over Wimborne Town. Not such good news for the Dolphins’ first team though, going down by the odd goal in three at Chesham United in the Bet Victor Southern League Premier Division. Gosport Borough shared the spoils in a one all draw against Yate Town, as did Salisbury and Blackfield & Langley, where a gate of nearly 500 was recorded. Wimborne’s first team were also on the receiving end of a defeat, conceding two without reply against Swindon Supermarine. In the Bet Victor Southern League Division One South Winchester City conceded two without reply at league leaders Frome Town but stay fourth. Thatcham Town bagged the points with a single goal victory at Highworth Town, whilst AFC Totton shared six goals and the points at Mangotsfield United. Larkhall won by the odd goal of three at Sholing and a Steve Hutchings hat trick helped Moneyfields to a 4-1 home win over Evesham United. Further away we see that original members Steyning Town had a goalless draw at Crawley Down Gatwick in the Southern Combination Premier Division- and currently sit midtable with 25 points from 17 games. Finally in this section we look at our highest placed former member Eastleigh. They drew one each at home against struggling Ebbsfleet United and stay 13th.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 23

WEEK NINETEEN ROUND UP

A full League Programme and not a postponement in sight – long may it continue. In the Premier Division five of the top six sides were victorious on the day with only the leaders, Alresford, losing and thus seeing their lead cut to seven points. Alresford have not lost many but when they have it has tended to be heavily and such was the case again as Portland scored five without reply at the Weyline Stadium. There were five different scorers in the victory front of the largest attendance of the day as Portland bounced back from two successive home defeats.

A single Ryan Turner goal gave Hamble Club all three points against Bashley and Christchurch made it five wins in a row with Luke Stone and Kyle Graham on the mark in a two goal victory at Hamworthy. AFC Stoneham continued their good form with a Callum Laycock goal enough to secure the points at Brockenhurst, their fifth win in their last six matches, and AFC Portchester completed the top six with a one nil success at lowly Bournemouth, Alex Baldacchino appearing on the score sheet after a long absence. Baffins Milton Rovers kept themselves in the hunt with a best of five goal victory on their first ever visit to Fleet Town with Rudi Blankson scoring twice and James Smith claiming both the home goals. Shaftesbury recorded their first win in four and halted Fareham’s recent run with a three two victory at Coppice Street with River Smith among the scorers and there was another single goal result at Tadley, Bobby Scott giving visitors Horndean the points. With Bournemouth losing, Solent University improved their position with a two one victory at Cowes courtesy of goals from Ethan Taylor and James Goodey, but Amesbury’s woes continued with a three nil defeat at Lymington for whom Dom Falco scored twice. So apart from the gap closing slightly between the leaders and the chasing pack, and Solent much improving their position at the bottom, the Premier Table stays very much as before the start of play. The top game in Division One was first against third at Burnaby Road with third place Downton coming out on top by four goals to two and inflicting US Portsmouth’s first home defeat of the season. Tom Jeffes scored both the home side’s goals and Tom Moseley was among the four Downton scorers. Second place Hythe & Dibden were held to a three all draw at home by Verwood, a very good point for the visitors in a game where there were six different names on the scoresheet and Hythe’s goals all came in the final twelve minutes. Alton scored four goals in the first quarter of an hour at The Portway and two Josh Bertie goals after the break proved not enough for Andover Town. This was Alton’s fourth win in a row and again, very much as usual, the goals were shared around. The game between the fifth and sixth placed sides at Whitchurch went the way of visitors Andover New Street by the odd goal in five, where we hear that George Bishop sustained a chipped bone I his big toe, so we wish him a speedy recovery, and Bemerton Heath maintained their excellent home record by defeating Newport two one with Justin Bennett increasing his season’s tally by one. Totton & Eling claimed their first win in nine with a three two defeat of Laverstock & Ford as the Wiltshire side’s poor record on their travels continued despite two goals from Chae Sykes. The Millers goalscorers were Ryan Lomax, Dylan Gain and Harry Burns. A Michael McLeod goal at New Milton gave Fawley a long awaited and overdue win but there was no joy for the bottom two who are now a little adrift as regards the table. Keiran Hancock scored twice as Romsey returned to winning ways with a four one success at East Cowes Vics and Nasim Meddah was another two goal man as Ringwood won five one at Follands. Despite their loss US Portsmouth still lead the table but only by a single point from Hythe & Dibden, Downton and Alton in what is proving to be a very interesting First Division this season. Thanks to all for the information.
