Aside from estuarine, salt marsh and nearshore sources, high near-bottom activities in stratified waters suggest that additional 224Ra is being supplied by the decay of 228Th in mid-shelf sediments (itself probably derived from decay of water column 228Ra). 224Ra is potentially a powerful tracer of water mixing on the shelf. Concentrations and ratios of U and Th in trough sediments are like those in sediments of the Huanghai Sea, Bo Hal Bay, East China Sea shelf and terrestrial China. U distribution was remarkably affected by redox conditions. A mathematical model has been developed to evaluate spatial and temporal distribution of radi- onuclide concentration from a continuous discharge of radioactive liquid effluents into the Tarapur (India) coastal waters. All the nuclides studied except 13q attain steady state concentration more or less after the same time interval. Confinement of radionuclides parallel to the coast is significant.
