The Historic Preservation Awards Program This evening the Manchester Historic Association celebrates the presentation of the 21st Annual Historic Preservation Awards. Since 1993, the Association has recognized and supported the efforts of individuals, businesses and organizations who have made significant contributions to the preservation of buildings, neighborhoods, traditions and other historic resources in our city. Proceeds from the Historic Preservation Awards dinner benefit the programs of the Manchester Historic Association, a charitable nonprofit organization. The Association operates the Millyard Museum at 200 Bedford Street in Manchester, New Hampshire, at the corner of Commercial and Pleasant streets in the historic Amoskeag Millyard. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The organization’s Research Center is located at 129 Amherst Street in downtown Manchester, in the Victory Park Historic District. Research Center hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment. John Clayton, Honorary Chair The Manchester Historic Association is honored to have Manchester native John Clayton as the Honorary Chair for the 21st Annual Historic Preservation Awards event. A journalist and writer, John wrote the popular “In the City” column for the New Hampshire Union Leader for 20 years. His column frequently featured historical stories about Manchester, and it was instrumental in making local history come alive for his many devoted readers in Manchester and beyond. The column became a part of history itself

when John published his last column on September 11, 2011. He is the author of seven books about Manchester and New Hampshire history and culture, and was host of “New Hampshire Crossroads” on NH Public Television for seven years. John is a member of the Manchester Historic Association, and he has donated much of his historical research on Manchester to the Association’s collection. He currently is the Vice President for Communications of the New Hampshire Hospital Association.

Ed Brouder, Master of Ceremonies Ed Brouder is a Connecticut native who has lived in New Hampshire since 1974. He is a former on-air broadcaster whose voice is familiar to any long-time Manchester native. He worked for WGIR Radio for 1975-79 and was news editor for WZID/WFEA/WMLL for several years. His radio work has been recognized with numerous awards. Ed is an enthusiastic local historian. He is the

author of Granite and Ether: A Chronicle of New Hampshire Broadcasting, and co-author of Manchester’s Airport: Flying Through Time. He earned a Master’s Degree in Internet Strategy Management from the Graduate Center of Marlboro College in 1999. He is the proprietor of the radio-oriented website www.manfrommars.com and an instructor at Hesser College. Ed is also a member and Trustee of the Manchester Historic Association.

Become involved in the work of the Manchester Historic Association and help to collect, preserve and share Manchester’s history.

Here are ways you can help:

Come to our programs and events – you’ll have fun – and bring your family and friends. The Association offers a variety of programs including lectures, concerts, walking tours, and special social events. There’s something to interest everyone! Make a donation – take advantage of tax benefits by making a gift of cash or securities - gifts may be made in honor or in memory of someone you love. You may be able to double your gift through your employer’s matching gift program. Become a member – memberships are available starting at $25 a year. You are eligible for discounts on all public programs and Museum Shop purchases, and will receive invitations to our special events. If you are already a member, thank you! Membership gifts – give memberships as gifts for birthdays and other special occasions. This is a terrific idea for someone who’s new in town. Planned giving – Consider planning a legacy gift to the Manchester Historic Association in your will. Legacy gifts are extremely important in keeping the Association on firm footing for the future. Also, you may consider other types of planned gifts – charitable trusts, IRAs, life insurance and annuities – there are many possibilities to benefit you, your estate and our organization.
