Dr Mervyn Jacobson ~ Doctor, Scientist, Inventor, entrepreneur.

Dr. Mervyn Jacobson (M.B.,B.S.) is a graduate of University of Melbourne Medical School. Over a 40-year period, Dr. Jacobson informed us that he has established a number of independent and highly successful commercial enterprises, each based on significant new inventions or discoveries in the world of science - in software development, medicine, molecular biology, animal reproduction and animal welfare.

Dr. Jacobson informed us he has become a recognised leader, and mentor, in the highly challenging process of taking new ideas from the lab to the market place, based on the application of entirely new technologies – in human medicine and also in veterinary medicine.

He explained his enterprises have had important applications in:l Improved diagnosis of human disease at the genetic level.l Improved efficiency of food production from food animals, including

cattle, sheep and pigs.l Improved reproductive techniques in companion animals, including

dogs, cats and horses.l Reproductive assistance to a number of important endangered

species programs - including the Australian Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby, Ethiopian Wolf, African Wild Dog and Pigmy Hippopotamus.

Dr. Jacobson has been repeatedly recognised for his work in developing new technologies benefiting science, agriculture and animal conservation.

Dr. Jacobson listed the following Commercial Achievements: 1970’s: l Formed the Datalab Group in Australia - focusing on new computer-

based medical diagnostic platforms. This business flourished and was subsequently sold and absorbed into Sonic, which is listed on ASX, and is now a world leader in this field.

l Formed Regional Medical Supply Company in Australia - pioneering a new concept for the streamlined bulk buying, importing, production and distribution of medical and dental supplies for doctors, dentists and hospitals. Subsequently sold and incorporated into the Henry Schein/Hallas group of companies in Australia and USA.

1980’s: l Pioneered the construction of passive solar office buildings,

including medical centers, in Northern Colorado, USA, and was then recognized by U.S. Department of Energy with an Ashray Award for the resulting energy efficiency that was achieved.

l Helped establish the new company, Optical Publishing Inc., in Fort

Collins, Colorado. OPI was an early innovator

of CD Rom software in USA and was subsequently awarded a major contract by the U.S. by the U.S. Navy, to install this system into the U.S. nuclear submarine fleet operating out of Pearl Harbor, and then also the US aircraft

carrier fleet.l Helped establish Cytomation Inc., in Fort Collins, Colorado, with the mission to develop the next generation of medical flow

cytometers

1990’s: l GeneType was awarded a multi-million dollar grant in 1998 by the

Australian Government, to encourage expansion of its advanced DNA research in the HLA field.

l Bought a majority interest in Gene Check, Inc. - a producer of lab kits for identifying defective genes.

l Established XY, Inc. in 1996 with Colorado State University Research Foundation (CSURF). XY was initially based within the CSU Animal Research Biotechnology Laboratory (ARBL) and then expanded into XY’s own facility at Moondrift Ranch in Northern Colorado.

2000’s: l In August 2000, GeneType AG was merged with a listed Australian

shell to form Genetic Technologies Limited (GTG), and Dr. Jacobson was appointed its first Executive Chairman.

l Appointed in 2004 as the Chief Technology Officer of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Chinese National Animal Breeding Stock Export/Import Corporation (“CABS”) - effectively becoming the lead visiting advisor to the Chinese dairy industry.

l Currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of ImmunAid Limited, a company focused on a better understanding of the process of immune regulation in humans and animals.

Dr. Jacobson says he has achieved many things in his career however his main ambition is to help cancer patients with carefully administered timed treatment through Cancer Immunotherapy.

After questions from the floor Pres Dale presented him with the club tie and a bottle of wine in appreciation of his talk.

Chairman PP Ian Mence introduced President Dale Hoy.

Dale welcomed Rotarians and guests. Firstly he welcomed Glenn Jacobson, Maureen Hoy, Colleen d’Offay, Suzie Leary, Jan Thomas, Philippa Bensley, Matthew Tsimos, Sheryl Dorgan, Robert McKimm, Kathy McKimm and Josephine Saunders.

He then introduced our speaker Dr Mervyn Jacobson who Dale said was a scientist, entrepreneur and artist.

Dale spoke about the previous week’s speakers and said that new member Robyn Lichter gave a great talk on her family and community life and work starting off in South Africa, Canada and finishing in Australia. He said we also had a community service presentation from Anne Holland from the Rotary Club of Brighton Beach. She spoke about AEDs (defibrillators) and that her husband had died many years ago from cardiac arrest because one wasn’t available at the time. For the last 10 years she has been passionate about the distribution of AEDs in the in public places in Victoria and around Australia. They have an awareness day on 12 October at Federation Square between 12.30pm and 1.30pm. On the back of Anne’s presentation Dale said we had decided to purchase an AED to be placed at Milanos Hotel for our club and Brighton Beach and public use. The idea is to have signage in the public area alerting people to its position in case of emergency.

Dale then gave an update on the Celebration of Women in Australian Rules Football Breakfast held recently and he said we had over 500 people there and it raised around $40,000.

Pres Dale Hoy:Dale told us he received an email from PP Barry Morris who was reluctantly leaving the Club. He had been in Italy for the last 12 months and in Queensland and was enjoying travelling and being with family. Dale said that Barry had been a faithful and hard working servant to the club for over 36 years and after his working career had finished he wanted to spend more time travelling and being with family. Barry and Sally will be sorely missed around the club.

Daryl was surprised to find out there were no secretaries announcements so he passed over to Pres Dale who had an announcement.

Sergeant’s Session: Sgt Alan JarrottJodi Ryan: Her birthday was on 17 September. Jodi protested the fine pointing out that she was holding a collection box but the Sarg said he makes the rules and she doesn’t;Jim Hill: His birthday was on 19 September. No complaints there;All North Melbourne supporters: Sarg who is a former North player said that the club was a disgrace for sacking 4 club legends and that they should have sacked the coach. Sarg was so disgusted he fined himself as well;Stephen Hartney: He is a visitor at our meetings and is here more than some of our members;Rob Nicholes: Sarg said it was good to see him up and about. Apparently Rob took his grand kids to the local Chinese restaurant and the proprietors complained that Rob took a fish out of the fish tank and he kissed it. Now his grand kids say when they are going out lets go kiss the fish at the Chinese restaurant;Norm Thomas: Sarg asked if Norm had any Irish background which Norm said he had. Sarg said it must be the luck of the Irish as he and Jan have a magnificent dining table with 10 chairs and they have been trying to sell it. Norm puts it on Gumtree and a guy from Townsville offers to buy it for $1000s and pay $1000 for the cartage. Sarg reckons that they are incredibly lucky;Pres Dale: Sarg said the President told him to keep his session short and the Sarg said that’s not good enough and that will automatically extend the session by a few minutes;

Stuart McMillan: Sarg asked his guest Philipa why she would come down here being a past Rotary president from Queensland. She replied “To visit her daughter in Mentone”;

Steve Tsimos: Steve had a coffee at a restaurant last Thursday and walks out to his car and there is a dent on it. He found a note from the perpetrator saying sorry they dented his car and to get in touch with them. As luck would have it the dent was on the same spot where there was a another dent which will now be fixed for free. Sarg thinks he must have an Irish background as well;

Matthew Tsimos: Steve’s son who is a financial planner advised his mother who is Steve’s ex wife on her financial separation settlement with Steve;

Robyn Lichter: Her photo appeared 5 times in the Bulletin;Colin Stimpson: Sarg asked all those who had been on national TV and all those who had been a special guest on a national TV program to raise their hands. A couple of people raised their hands. Sarg then asked who had sung on national TV? Colin Stimpson raised his hand as he had been on SBS ‘Rockwiz’ and hadn’t told anyone in the club. He sang a Max Merritt and the Meteors song ‘Slip Sliding Away’. Jodi challenged Colin to sing it at the meeting if we all put in which he did. He got an ovation from everyone afterwards as he sang very well and he raised quite a bit for charity.

If this ever happens to you.......

Police Superintendent Matthew Ryan has been selected to represent District 9800 on a vocational exchange of experts in family violence being arranged between our Rotary District and District 6840, centred on New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Matthew is the sole superintendent in the Victoria Police Family Violence Command established in March 2015. He leads a team of 50 staff working corroboratively to prevent and reduce the harm caused by child abuse, sexual assault, and family violence. He will travel to the United States for two weeks in late March. He will be hosted there by local Rotarians and will study the work of police and other agencies involved with domestic violence. He will also speak at the District 6840 Conference being held at the Island View Casino & Resort in Gulfport, Louisiana.District 6840 is about to select an expert in the field to spend two weeks in Victoria looking at ways the various agencies here tackle the growing problem of family violence. That person will speak at the District 9800 Conference in Bendigo on 12th March.This exchange of vocational leaders in the field grew out of the very successful Group Study Exchange (GSE) run between Districts 9800 and 6840 in March and April 2015. At the time of that GSE, the team leaders, DGN Peter Frueh (9800) and Carl Michel (6840) agreed that domestic violence was a major issue in both communities and that by having a vocational exchange of this sort the relationship between our two Rotary Districts would be enhanced in a meaningful way. It is intended that the exchange will be hosted by each District for two weeks each year for three years.Superintendent Matthew Ryan says that “This exchange will inspire me to be innovative in the way I lead police to combat family

violence in Victoria; career development and enhancement comes to those who innovatively do the right thing for community safety.” He is keen to create positive lasting links with family violence professionals in the USAPrior to establishing the Family Violence Command, Matthew was the Superintendent in charge of the Victoria Police State Emergency Response Division. He was the Police Commander for the Murrindindi and Mitchell Shires for three months during and after the 2009 Black Saturday fires. He has worked in metropolitan and rural Victoria as a police operative, detective, supervisor and manager. From 2001, he spent five years planning and delivering the security overlay for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. In 2008, Matthew was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chadstone – East Malvern as a participant in the first Rotary Victoria Police Leadership Mentoring Program. He is an accomplished speaker and has spoken at Rotary Clubs, police conferences and various community forums. Matthew has been married for 29 years. He and his wife have four sons. His trip has been made possible by a travel grant from the Rotary Club of Balwyn. The leadership of District 9800 is very appreciative of the Balwyn Club’s generous support of this new vocational exchange and wishes to place on record its grateful thanks to the club. IVAN’S HACKERSIVAN’S HACKERS

“Spring-like” weather welcomed 13 Ivan’s Hackers to the course and Ivan Vojlay won the keenly contested Pre-Game Putting competition. Thereafter, on the course proper, Ron Stark and Bill Howley released the Long Drives, on holes 7 and 9, respectively. Off-The-Stick it was Rob Foster’s 46 shots that blitzed the field, with Ray Street, Sven-Erik Bredenberg and James Tisdall sharing equal 2nd place, with 48 shots, behind Rob. Best on Handicap was Ray Street’s 32 shots, with Rob Foster and Sven-Erik Bredenberg’s 33 shots sharing 2nd place.

Paul Nicholson’s putting generally, including his Nearest-The-Pin shot, earned him the Vojlay-Cole Trophy nomination, for the morning. Congratulations Paul.

To the match review where 3rd place getter in each of the playing groups supplied the coffees. During the review it was deemed that a special award should be made to Ron Stark to recognise his power hitting, which saw him scoring 3 x 8’s and 3 x 9’s in the first 6 holes and strangley enough, on the 7th and Long Drive hole, Ron relaxed his grip on the club and parred the hole (a 4). None of us can offer help Ron, but to recognise your final score for the morning the time honoured “NaN” (Not another Nine) award is yours. Other than the “NaN” award congratulations, a somewhat subdued group, including John Carroll, Richard Sarell and Jim Moore, could only report a steady morning’s golf. Highlights and unusual occurrences were scarce and there was no report of an immersion in Arthur’s Lake, which now carries plenty of water and awaits, you know who? Ian Cole was not treading in his familiar sand traps and Bruce Crossley HHH was playing his gentleman’s game and keeping a close eye on the group behind. Ivan’s Hackers will gather at Brighton Golf Club next Saturday morning and once again, everyone is welcome to bring a friend to enjoy the fun.

Robyn’s Rotary “claim to fame” is that she is “Qualified by Experience” – QBE.

Having her African footprint well ensconced in the drumbeat of Africa where she was born, she grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa, in a household where giving back to the

community was a way of life. Both her parents we heavily involved in Rotary, in fact like Jodi Ryan, Robyn lost her father when she was 11 when he was killed in an air crash, which is alleged to be part of the handiwork of the Apartheid regime. The last photo she has is of her father as the Rotary club Secretary 50 years ago.Robyn was instilled with a sense of resourcefulness and curiosity. She grew up lucky enough to have a rich childhood with no TV, (South Africa introduced TV after I left in 1975) and going on animal safaris often because they were the most affordable family holiday or school camp.Education and Start-ups are the really the cornerstones of her lifel The family business introduced many firsts in many ways,

plastics, the new material, was used in many ways, and the 24 hour machine operation was unheard of.

l Bellavista private School was created when her younger brother was diagnosed with a learning disability. This represented a challenge when at a time when no specialized teaching or schools existed. The answer was to create a school and everyone was involved with preparations – sanding desks in the basement etc.

l Robyn’s first “joy of giving” with her own community work began at 14 with a friend. They provided Christmas parties in Soweto for 500 children for 3 years running.

l Her first main job was at IBM, teaching the new “user friendly” accounting,programming language with punch cards to middle executive accountants.

l The reality of Apartheid was pervasive and she couldn’t tolerate a life in this environment - it didn’t sit well with her sense of justice. The most profound experience of identifying with a black person was a youth movement night where everyone was covered in black to discuss the book “Black Like Me” -

a similar evening to the Nick Naitanui fan representing “Black Boy” attracting a very different reaction.

l So after a few years at IBM she decided to go back to study, but at the other side of the world. So at 20yrs of age she went to York University in Toronto to study Education and Special Ed.

l She returned to South Africa for a few years teaching at a Special Ed school and because the school day finished at 2.00pm, she began a private practice in Special Ed.

l A Small Business Diploma led to the start-up of a mining consulting business with a friend, writing training programs and eventually establishing a marketing database of all mining equipment in South Africa. Travelling through the countryside in their new green BMW, they came across a huge kudu (larger than a horse) jumping across the road from nowhere, sending the car into a spin rolling 3 times. Luckily they escaped without a scratch. The car was towed back to Johannesburg, written off, and landed up being bought by a client who proudly boasted of his amazing cheap deal!

l Robyn then came to Australia, starting up the Special Ed department at a private school.

l While applying for permanent residency she met Maurice who proposed shortly thereafter without having had time to discover what immigration was all about. He had to pay $5 to keep her in Australia. They accidentally discovered their wedding photo in Ita Buttrose’s book on Etiquette. It had been used without their permission - in those days the intellectual property belonged to the photographer.

l Robyn then ran Maurice’s medical practice for over 20 years until nearing the age of 50 decided on a career change.

l She was offered a position in a medical research support service and facility government start-up. The first role was to do a gap analysis of the industry. This led to the discovery of the need for particular training in medical research practices, particularly when huge investments of $500m a day are at risk. The introduction of these global courses nationally, which later became a certification program and the first online training, resulted.

l When the department was closed Robyn took this function over as her own business, which still operates on an on demand basis.

l A short but exciting stint of work at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia reintroduced both Robyn and Maurice to voluntary work which has led to joining Rotary to pursue more of this work in their semi retired chapter of life.

Editor’s Note: Due to my errors in last week’s Bulletin article I have decided Robyn’s story should be presented again with the corrected copy.
