Bride of the year title “icing on the cake”

Pictured from left: Runner-up Lana Woolley, organiser Carol Taylor, winner Jessica Francis, third place Melissa Cowdrey and audience choice Amie Murphy. From Page 1. “To be honest I went a bit blank

when they were announcing the winners, I was standing on stage wondering why my sister was screaming in the audience, then it dawned on me that I had won,” she laughed.

“Even on Sunday when I woke up and saw the amazing prizes I received I almost had to pinch my-self, it’s been such a huge honour being part of the show,” she said.

Winning the title was the “ic-

ing on the cake” for Jessica and husband Daniel who were married at Brancott Estate on March 12.

“Our wedding was like a fairy tale and now winning the Bride of the Year has been amazing, we are both thrilled,” she said.

Despite the high nerves in the afternoon leading up to the show, Jessica said all 24 brides enjoyed their day, sharing wedding stories and meeting new people.

“I really enjoyed myself so thank you to the 25 people who came

along and supported me.“Also a special thank you to

Beyond the Fringe Hair Design Redwoodtown, Marlborough Day Spa and Grace Simpson for all their help getting me ready for the show,” she said.

The dispensary technician at Amcal Pharmacy entered the show with her stunning gown designed by Canadian designer Paloma Blanca, and purchased from the Christchurch bridal store Tulle.

By Celeste LodewykFor sisters Kathryn Flood and Jo Ker-

meen the Beavertown Blenheim Bride of the Year 2011 was very much a proud family moment.

Not only are they close, but they both work for PGG Wrightson and were married within three months of one another.

What is more, their sister Chrissie Jeffery won the People’s Choice category last year, and was this year backstage helping her sisters to prepare for the show.

“It’s funny that all three of us are so similar, in fact we were all married within the past 13 months,” jokes Jo.

Having her sister in the show with her was a great experience for Kathryn.

“The Bride of the Year show was amazing and to have my sister experience it alongside me was fantastic,” she says.

For Jo, it was her husband’s idea to enter the show but says she would encourage all brides to take part.

“It was nerve wracking but I had loads of support and really enjoyed myself.

“And so did my husband who was one of the men up dancing during the night,” she laughs.

Both girls were married in Seddon and took part on one another’s ceremony.

Kathryn married Daniel Flood on her family’s farm in March and Jo married Ben Kermeen on a neighbouring lake, but had the reception at the family farm.

By Celeste LodewykThis year’s Beavertown Blenheim

Lions Bride of the Year show held at the Marlborough Convention Centre on Saturday night was a sell out success.

An incredible 240 tickets were sold, in comparison to the 180 tick-ets at last year’s show and strutting their stuff were 24 hopeful brides, all vying for the title of 2011’s Bride of the Year.

Organiser Carol Taylor says despite the last minute cancellation of one of

the show’s comperes, MORE FM’s Jaime Liddicoat who suffered a sport-ing injury on the day of the show, the night ran relatively smoothly.

“I stepped into Jaime’s shoes at the last minute which is very different to my role as organiser, but we did it and it was a great night,” she laughs.

Got It Covered decorated the room beautifully with a stunning bridal theme, the cabaret style seating was a hit and there were many positive comments following the show, she says.

Guest judges for this year’s show were Arthur Devine, Ray Mc-Cormick, Judy Penman, Andrea Piebenga and Judy Newman.

Winning brides were selected for their overall performance, the work-manship of the dress, sensibility of the dress, grooming, deportment and overall presentation.

Winners were presented with prize packages generously donated by Marlborough businesses as well as sashes donated by Alan Newman of Newman Graphics.

Show a mighty success

Retailers welcome Kronic crackdown

Harry Davenport [14] “It should be harder to get. [The age limit] should be 18 ‘cause 16-year-olds can just give it to people younger than them. I’ve never tried it, I don’t want to.”

Connor Wyatt [14]“Whoever feels like smoking it, they can smoke it. I’ve never tried it, ‘cause I don’t want it to affect my education.”

George Marlow [16]“It shouldn’t be allowed to go to people under 16. I’ve tried it but it’s not that great. All the hype about is pretty bad.”

The Sun asked three Marlborough Boys’ College students for their views on the sale and consumption of Kronic.

By Damian GeorgeBlenheim retailers who sell the

synthetic cannabis substance Kronic say they would welcome proposed Government restric-tions on the sale and marketing of the product.

Associate Health Minister Pe-ter Dunne has suggested changes be made to the Misuse of Drugs Act 2005 in order to curb sales of the product, saying the changes will be made within weeks.

Of the four retailers The Sun spoke to who stock the product - High Street Dairy, Boots ‘n’ All, Tip Top Store & Takeaways and Travel Stop Cyber Cafe - all say they have already placed their own restrictions on the product, limiting sales to customers aged 18 and over.

High Street Dairy co-owner Maryann Hart says she did not hesitate to enforce the restric-tion as soon as Kronic was made available.

“I’ve got grandchildren and I wouldn’t want them having drugs until they’re adults and they can decide what to do.”

The dairy’s retail assistant, Zoe Hart, says the store re-ceives people between 18 and 50 years of age requesting Kronic.

“When we first got it in, we were one of the only places that were selling it. We were selling $400-500 a day, but now it’s slowed down heaps,” she says.

“We still get people coming in and asking but I think everyone knows that it’s gonna be banned

so they’re going back to smok-ing weed.”

Boots ‘n’ All owner Andrew Hall says Kronic is an adult product so should only be made available to adults.

“We make it R18 - no ID, no sale, no exception,” he says.

“To limit the places it’s sold to specialty stores, that’s far better than having it available at bars or dairies and the like.

“It should have been that way right from the start.”

He says people use it because they do not get in trouble for it and there is no stigma attached to it.

The proposed changes would also apply to other widely availa-ble ‘cannabinoid’ substances like “Spice”, “Aroma” and “Dream”.

By Damian GeorgeMinister of Health Tony Ryall

was on hand to officially open the redeveloped Wairau Hospital in Blenheim on Saturday.

The ceremony was the celebra-tion of a project which was carried out in four stages and started in September, 2008.

Staff and departments were relocated to temporary premises throughout that time as the new

facilities were built.“Our staff and patients now have

a facility to be proud of,” Nelson Marlborough District Health Board chief executive John Peters says.

“I would like to thank both the community and staff for their patience while the hospital was being built around them.”

National MP for Kaikoura Colin King, who was present at Satur-day’s ceremony, says the opening

was an “incredibly satisfying end” to the $46 million project.

“There’s a lot of tradition and history up there,” he says of the 125-year-old facility.

“To have it completed on time and budget is great.

“We’ve done our bit, this genera-tion, now it’s up to future genera-tions of Marlburians to ensure that these services are improved in the future.”

By Damian GeorgeThe new $500,000 car park which

will replace the old Working Men’s Club building on Wynen Street will be completed by the end of September at the latest.

Marlborough District Council executive projects manager Jamie Lyall says work will begin to extend the existing car park on the site once the Working Men’s Club has been demolished.

“A start date is yet to be deter-

mined but all work is required to be completed by September 30, 2011.”

Mr Lyall says demolition consent has been obtained from the council.

Engineering input will be re-quired to ensure builders do not “undermine” a basement which sits below the neighbouring Wright-son’s building during construction, he says.

The council-owned site was to be developed into a $15 million Farmers Trading Co department

store, but the company has been unable to secure a developer.

Two developers have pulled out of the project since it was proposed in 2007.

MDC support services manager Dean Heiford says the project will create roughly an additional 100 parking spaces. He says the existing car park will also be upgraded.

By Damian GeorgeVehicle owners who have been

using a strip of land on Grove Road to advertise their cars for sale are being warned to move them off the site.

The message comes after the Marlborough District Council took up a lease of the land owned by the New Zealand Transport Agency recently.

The land, adjacent to the railway line near the Blenheim i-Site, has long been used as an unlicensed car yard for cheaply-priced vehicles.

MDC executive projects manager Jamie Lyall says the move will help to tidy up the appearance of a “major entry point to Blenheim”.

Work is scheduled to begin soon to transform the site into a proper parking area to support the new i-Site and Railway Station.

A sign was erected last week advising all vehicle owners to remove their cars, and notices were placed on vehicle windscreens.

Marlborough car dealer Phil Brown, of Phil Brown Motors, says he is “delighted” with the decision to displace the car yard.

Mr Brown has been pushing the council for “at least three to four years” to clean out the area.

“It was annoying, but it was an eyesore more than anything.”

By Damian GeorgeCivic Theatre Trust chairman

Kevin Moseley says the Marlborough District Council’s decision to buy Blenheim’s theatre building has ended an uncertain period for the trust.

The council confirmed plans in its 2011-12 budget last week to buy the building and the block of land it occupies from the Civic Theatre Trust for $6m, and to provide a $5m grant for the project.

Mr Moseley told The Sun on Mon-day the decision was a big relief for the trust, after a newly-elected council had decided to review its

funding of the project and the theatre purchase last year.

“I’m excited that the council are still on board with the project and it means that we can move forward,” he says.

“The project management team are now hardening up on the design.

“We hope to get a tender before the end of 2011, so that we can hopefully announce the tender at the beginning of next year.”

Mr Moseley says it is estimated construction of the proposed theatre will take about 18 months, meaning it is likely to be completed in mid-2013.

The trust had halted its fundrais-

ing efforts last year as it waited on the council’s decision. It had al ready raised the $3m it set out to achieve at the time for the $17m project, and has now raised $3.5m.

Mr Moseley told The Sun the project had had its ups and downs.

The trust had initially only planned to obtain $1m, as the Labour-led government ousted in 2008 had ear-marked $4.5m for the project under its Significant Project Fund.

The trust then reset its target at $3m as the National government came in, before deciding it would “be lucky” to get any money following the Christchurch earthquakes and adjusted its target to $5m.

“Nothing’s a given,” he says.“In the time this project’s been

going, we’ve had three councils, two governments, and I still have the same team that that have been putting all the work in, unpaid, from the outset.”

Mr Moseley says he hopes to have achieved the $5m goal by the time the project is completed.

Decision puts theatre plans back on track

Kevin Moseley is pictured with the Dress Circle Lead Light recovered from the former theatre in High St.

New pool opens

The new $15 million aquatic cen-tre opened at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 on Monday, much to the delight of local swimmers.

The new indoor facility boasts a ten-lane, 25-metre recreational pool, a children’s area including a ‘lazy river’, a modern hydro therapy

pool and a spa and sauna area.Work is now beginning to refur-

bish the stadium’s existing indoor pools. That is expected to be com-pleted by the end of the year.

Construction is also underway on an outdoor three-lane, 25-metre pool and children’s area.

By Damian GeorgeA four-week trip around Europe

is not part of your usual school curriculum, but that is exactly what a group of Queen Charlotte College students will be doing later this year.

The 18 history classics students, along with three other top pupils, will embark on the trip in Sep-tember covering Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Turkey and the Greek Islands.

“It’s about taking what [the students] are learning in class and making it real,” Queen Charlotte College assistant principal and trip organiser Jack Saxon says.

“The major focus is all about gaining that global perspective.”

The students will start in Venice, Italy, before visiting Slovenia and Croatia then returning to Italy to cover Rome and Naples.

From there, they will head

to Athens and Peloponnese in Greece, and explore Greek Islands including Mykonos, Samos, Ephe-sus and Canakali either side of a visit to Turkey’s western coast.

The trip rounds out with a stop in Istanbul in Turkey and a short stop in Dubai.

Mr Saxon says he hopes the excursion will inspire his students to continue to travel once they leave school.

“These kids are on the cusp of making some big life decisions and I want them to make those decisions with a greater range of experiences,” he says.

“A lot of kids choose to stay in Picton, which is great, but we’re trying to encourage them to go away, soak up some experience, and come back with all that experience under their belt.”

The trip will cost each student $6150, of which $3600 will come

from their own pocket and the rest from school fundraising initiatives.

Each student will be responsible for researching and leading the group around a site during the trip.

Car park delay

The scheduled handover date of Blenheim’s new Alfred St carpark from contractors to the Marlborough District Council has been extended from June 20 to June 27 as a result of last week’s earthquakes in Christchurch.

MDC executive projects manager Jamie Lyall says the two quakes, measuring magnitude 5.7 and 6.3, have delayed the delivery of some building materials needed for the project.

Woman Wins $50,000

Blenheim woman Jess McKinnon has pocketed $50,000 after winning the national Telecom Top Up and Win competition.

The prize includes $30,000 in travel vouchers and $20,000 in cash.

T he 17-yea r-old Chateau Marlborough waitress says she plans to use the winnings to visit the Cook Islands with her family.

Employees ‘go pink’ for cancer

Employees at Blenheim’s Safe Air and RNZAF Base Woodbourne donned the pink clothing yesterday as part of its ‘Let’s Go Pink’ day to support breast cancer.

Safe Air marketing and sales manager Alex Robins says the day was inspired by colleagues or their part-ners who are presently battling cancer.

“It’s about being aware of how you can support somebody going through

cancer and encouraging people to be more pro-active with screening,” Mr Robins says.

The highlight of the event was a tongue-in-cheek ‘fashion runway’, in which six male employees dressed as women and took to the catwalk.

Mr Robins says the event raised more than $900 in gold coin donations, which will be donated to the Marlborough branch of the NZ Cancer Society.

Q: Do you find it offensive for mothers to breastfeed in public?readers have their say...Sun

Hollei GabrielsenBlenheim

I am a breastfeeding mother, and I don’t find it offensive to see others doing it. I do try to be as discreet as I can.

Isobel McKoyBlenheim

No I don’t find it offensive. The cafe owner (in Timaru) that complained is the one that has the problem.

Rebecca ThompsonBlenheim

I am ok with it, as long as the mothers are being discreet about it. (Mum of 4)

Allison KingiBlenheim

It’s the most natural way of feeding a baby. People that have a problem with it need to deal with it.

Bab A’CourtBlenheim

No, I don’t have a problem with it when it’s done discreetly.

Nicole KingiBlenheim

I am a Mum, and I’d be offended if other people found it offensive for me to feed in public, because it is just a natural way of life.

Dear Editor, Among the many people I converse

with at all levels here in Blenheim it appears we have a very real concern in that we have many people, particularly the elderly, being prescribed multi medications that is not only making them ill but (also) keeping them ill.

Unfortunately, we, the older gen-eration have looked on our Doctors as ‘gods’ and just accepted what we were told - medication given, no questions asked. I have heard the advice given on a number of occasions “if a Doctor prescribes more than five medications (some say 3), change your Doctor”.

We need to acknowledge that we know our own bodies best, we do know best ‘how we feel’ and therefore can, in many cases, know what is in our best interests healthwise. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Get on the

Internet and research very thoroughly what medications claim they will do and very importantly what the side ef-fects are. Our bodies are wonderfully made and can in many instances heal themselves if only given the chance. And yes, sometimes they do need some assistance. It is not helpful to be told that we’re old and just have to ac-cept and put up with some things. We do deserve to be treated with dignity and respect at all times.

I know of more and more people who have made their own decisions, rid themselves of medication they believed was making them ill and their health has improved immensely.

Be encouraged. Take control, eat healthily, exercise and live a happy, healthy life.

Sincerely, Mrs Judi Woolley

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

In response to Charlie’s letter ‘Truck Safety’ published on June 15:

Hey Charlie! Think it out man! Or are you a truckie? Ever been slowed to a crawl on uphill sections and windy

places and then trucks go up to 98 km/hour?

Why were trucks speed limits raised from 80 to 90 km/hour?

Safety First

Congratulations, the staff of ASB Bank Blenheim. The pleasure is always mine to come into your bank.

The very high standards and level of customer service skills that are offered is overwhelming.

Sadly, this is not always the case in a lot of the other businesses in Blenheim.

Maybe some of them need to visit your bank to see how customers should be treated.

Keep it all up, staff at ASB, and well done to the manager for the high level of service you have your staff offer the public.

But for those who have seen her perform live, Clara is no shrinking violet. This 13-year old has the stage confidence, theatrical ability and natural voice capable of winning over any audience.

This has been proven many times including at the re-cent Stars in their Eyes competition at the Marlborough Convention Centre where she won first place with her performance as American musician Rickie Lee Jones.

Of course this wasn’t Clara’s first taste of success, she also won the 2010 Marlborough’s Got Talent with her own song, Crocodile Tears and has experienced the thrill of recording her first ever album, Evolution.

In total Clara says she has written 43 songs, many of which have come together whilst playing her guitar.

“If I try to write a song it won’t sound any good, but I can be relaxing and strumming on my guitar and suddenly the words will come to me,” she says.

Describing her music, Clara says in the beginning it was a similar style to Bic Runga, but has since evolved to be what she calls “alternative”.

Like most budding performers Clara’s love for music began at an early age, as her father Alex explains.

“My wife Rachel and I knew from when she was three-years old that she would follow music, she was always singing and enjoyed putting on performances,” he says.

Clara’s musical roots stem from her mother’s family and her performing abil-ity from her father, she says.

“Mum sings and her grandfather was an opera singer, and dad spent a few years at drama school so I definitely got the best of both worlds. My sister Daisy is also a good singer and dancer,” she says.

Originally from England, Clara received singing lessons at a young age before moving to New Zealand with her English father and Kiwi mother and continued to build upon her performing skills.

“I was always comfortable with my voice but not so much being on stage, so I joined Star Dance which really boosted my confidence and taught me a lot about stage presence.

“Now I love being in front of an audience,” she says. One of Clara’s first musical inspirations came from

a Hayley Westenra album that her father brought back from an overseas trip.

“I can remember Clara singing Hayley Westenra’s

‘Who Painted the Moon Black’ perfectly, word for word at age six, it was so beautiful and completely blew us away,” says Alex.

When it comes to writing her own material, Clara admits she doesn’t put them down on paper, but rather stores them in her memory and sings them over and over.

“Plus dad records me as much as possible so we have a record of my songs,” she adds.

Aware of her musical talent, Spy Valley agreed to host a fundraising concert in September 2009, where Clara performed to a crowd of around 80.

Six of her songs from the concert were recorded live and included in her first album.

Two years on and quite a lot of song writing later, Clara is now looking to record her second album.

Plans had been made to record in Christchurch prior to the February earth-quake, but now Clara and her parents are considering Wellington.

“I don’t have a name for this new album but there will be 10 or so songs on it,” she says excitedly.

Sales from Clara’s first album are so far around 200 to 300 and the money she has made has gone toward purchasing sound equipment and her new Ibanez acoustic guitar.

Aside from music, Clara is also a bright student with aspirations to pursue law or journalism and enjoys sports such as badminton and netball.

For those who wish to see Clara perform, she will be one of several taking part in Tempo’s first ever NZ Music Night this Friday, from 7pm at the Wesley Centre in Blenheim. Entry is by donation.

By Celeste LodewykTomorrow is the due date of

expectant parents Claudia Marie and Oliver Wiesner’s baby girl and as exciting as that is alone, they are doubly excited about their new handcrafted wooden cradle.

So much so that Claudia wanted to make a formal thank you to the “wonderful” craftsmen of the Marlborough Guild of Wood-workers.

To explain their story, the couple has been searching for a tradi-tional wooden cradle but had no luck in finding one.

With their baby’s due date loom-

ing, they began searching overseas but were quickly put off by the “extreme” prices.

One day whilst strolling through Brayshaw Park, they noticed the Guild’s sign and went in to inquire about their work.

Guild members Bob Patchett, Colin Hammond and President Edward Guard agreed to make the cradle drawing inspiration from an antique woodworking catalogue.

The task took 35 days to com-plete and when the Sun visited last Wednesday, Claudia and Oliver had arrived to collect their cradle.

“We are just thrilled with it and so grateful that they agreed to make this for us,” Claudia says.

The cradle was made from Macrocarpa wood and was three feet long.

Friday as Waterlea Resthome residents, Bupa employees and Alzheimer’s Marlborough joined to dance to the theme of ‘Lets Remember to Dance’.

Hosted by the Alzheimer’s Centre on Wither Road, this was the second dance held last week as part of the Bupa Global Challenge 2011.

Bupa Care Services, formerly Guard-ian Health Care is one of New Zealand’s leading providers of care services, including rest homes such as Waterlea Resthome in Blenheim.

As part of this Global Challenge, thousands of Bupa employees from around the world join together with their communities in June to encourage more people to get moving.

Marlborough community did last week, with two dances organised for Waterlea Resthome residents, Bupa employees and members of the community.

When the Sun arrived at Friday’s dance, the Marlborough Boys’ College opened the dance with a Kapa Haka performance which was followed by special guests Mayor Alistair Sowman and deputy Mayor Jenny Andrews with the official first dance.

Waterlea Resthome activities co-or-dinator Mary Hodgson said the dances were a way to show that resthomes were not about sitting in a chair all day.

“It’s all about having heaps of fun and promoting wellbeing and healthy ageing, and as you can see by the smiles in the room, this has been a wonderful way to get our community moving,” she says.

“If you don’t know where you want to be, how will you know you have got there?” asks Prosper mort-gage specialist and financial coach Jac Lockington.

This is a question she often presents to her clients as she guides them toward identifying and preparing for any future challenges which may lie ahead.

“Your family budget needs to be reviewed regularly as things change over time, and as we are slowly emerging from the recession I believe it is a good time to re-evaluate financial goals.

Over the past months Jac has assisted her clients in many areas including helping their adult children to purchase their first home, lay-ing to rest a previous adverse credit history so they can purchase their own home, and advis-ing on more effective ways to pay off credit card and other debt.

In addition to her financial coaching role, Jac has also been working with clients focus-ing on their personal goals.

“It’s just as important to look at what clients are aiming to achieve, for example finding a better life balance and identifying what their priorities are in life,” she says.

It is the client re-lationships which form the foundation of any good busi-ness, says Picton bus inesswoman Sandy Hawke.

Owner and oper-ator of Sandy’s Hair Design on Welling-

ton Street, Sandy has been in the industry for 33 years and recently achieved her life long career goal of owning her own salon.

Sandy took over Hair With Attitude on June 1, a successful and vibrant salon where she had been working since Octo-ber last year.

“When the opportunity arose I jumped at it, it has always been a goal of mine to own a salon so I am thrilled,” she says.

Although the salon has been renamed ‘Sandy’s Hair Salon’, Sandy insists the quality and friendly service remains the same.

“Vince Dobrin who has been with the business for 18 months is still here and we both look forward to welcoming new cli-ents,” she says.

Sandy first began her hairdressing ca-reer in Invercargill where she began as an apprentice.

She moved to Picton 13-years ago where she continued her work as a profes-sional hairdresser.

Asked what inspired him to pursue a career in hospitality, Quench Restaurant and Wine Bar head chef Fran Nolan simply replies; “the places you travel, the people you meet and the diversity of flavours you discover,” he says.

Fran, who is originally from Wicklow in Ireland has been a chef for 13-years and even longer in the hospitality industry.

From humble beginnings cooking at golf clubs, Fran went on to complete a chef’s training course in Ireland before taking his food passion around the world.

It is from his travels that he draws most of his inspiration for his style of cook-ing which he describes as, “light, fresh, seasonal and vibrant with mouth watering flavours”.

Some of Fran’s experience includes cooking in Ireland, Thailand, throughout

Europe, Australia and more recently here in New Zealand.

“The menu is really a mix of my travels as well as emphasising locally sourced produce.

“I have been in Marlborough nearly two years but instantly fell in love the local produce; salmon from the Marlborough Sounds, Cloudy Bay clams, Havelock mus-sels and New Zealand lamb – it’s all about trying different things,” he says.

Fran’s menu suggestion:

Entrée: Cloudy Bay clams, bacon and

sweetcorn chowder with fresh herbs and garlic toast.

Main: Fillet of beef served with duck fat roasted potatoes, glazed shallots, spinach and shitaki

mushroom jus.

Dessert: Coffee panna cotta with

espresso syrup, hazelnut fudge and fig biscotti.

As everyone knows the best way to reduce your electricity con-sumption is to use less electricity.

But with the winter months come long, cold nights and plenty of temptation to use the heated towel rail and heat pump an extra few hours, your electricity bill will soon begin to soar.

So to get you thinking about energy saving, here is some professional advice from Laser Electrical owner Brendon Adams.

Insulation:Once you have heat in the house,

it’s important to keep it there and insulation will help with that. Batts in the roof, wall insulation, double glazing, thermal backed curtains – these will all hold the heat in.

If your hose is on piles, under-floor insulation is a good solution to consider.

Home Ventilation:DVS, HRV and Smart Vents

work well in winter as they use the hot air that is in the roof space, filters it then circulates it throughout the home.

It’s a good, cheap form of heat-ing during the day.

Heatpumps:Heat Pumps are currently the

most cost-effective form of heat-ing using electricity.

Installing a heat pump does come with a cost but will pay itself off through energy savings made over approximately a five-year period.

Energy Suppliers:People need to shop around and

get quotes from different energy suppliers as there can be quite a difference between them.

This is especially important as there will be high loads of energy use expected throughout June, July and August so energy bills may already be experiencing an increase.

A good website to refer to is www.powerswitch.co.nz and has been designed to work out what rates you are on now, and compares them to the alternatives.

Towel Rails:Heated towel rails are quite

commonly left going more dur-ing winter, but by using a timer you can save up to $100 per year per rail.

Having it going during the day is wasted money down the drain so call us today and we can install a timer for you.

Light Bulbs:During winter the nights are

longer and people are using their lights more.

Some cost effective ways to save on lighting include using compact florescent lights. These use 80 percent less energy than standard incandescent light bulbs and for years they have delivered the biggest savings.

Light Emitting Diodes are also another option as they are up to five times more energy efficient than standard incandescent light bulbs and are very cheap to run.

Wireless Electricity Monitor:

Laser Electrical sells the OWL Wireless Electricity Monitor which is a great tool for moni-toring your electricity usage. It provides up to the second information on the amount of electricity you are using in terms of power, cost and your carbon

footprint. This means you can see in real time the benefits of turning off electrical devices at home and help change your habits and behaviour which could amount to savings of hundreds of dollars per year.

Column Heaters:If you have no other form of

heating than a column heater, then it’s important to use the temperature and timer settings so you are only using it when you need it.

For more information about our services and products, contact the team today at Laser Electrical Blenheim.

Blenheim Denture Studio

Blenheim Denture Studio is the only practice in Marlborough to offer patients the benefits of an APT injection moulded denture.

APT is a system that provides high quality dentures that are the most natural looking and closest fitting prosthetics available.

Using state of the art technology to replicate the appearance and function of natural teeth APT dentures exceed internationally accepted benchmarks previously set for dentures.

Due to the exact fit and strength of an APT denture, problems like multiple adjustments and cracking are virtually eliminated.

You get a denture that fits and lasts fantastically.

The teeth used are the best available on the market. Their distinctively natural appearance surpasses anything previously available in dentures.

They contain multiple blended layers of dentin and enamel to create a natural, lifelike effect never seen before.

This blending of layers guarantees enduring colour stability and long-lasting wear.

It also produces a shading effect that is indistinguishable from natural teeth.

APT dentures are made from the highest quality materials that are tested and certi-fied for biocompatibility at independent institutes.

These materials meet and exceed all the required international standards under very strict quality control procedures.

If you wish to see what the best denture available on the market can do for your appearance, confidence and long-term well-being, call Chris and Rachel on phone 578 4344 to book a free-of-charge, no-obligation consultation today. PBA

APT (Advanced Prosthetic Treatment) Dentures

Denture CareCleaning your dentures

every day is one of the most important things you can do to help your smile keep its attractive appearance. If you don’t, plaque can form on dentures, making them less bright. Plus, failure to clean your dentures regularly can result in staining and denture odor, as well.

Here are a few simple tips:1. Dentures can break, so al-

ways fill the sink with water, then clean your dentures over the sink, just in case they slip

out of your hands by accident.2. Rinse your dentures

thoroughly to remove loose food particles. Use cool or warm water. But never use hot water – it can warp your dentures.

3. Apply a denture cleaning paste to a moistened denture brush or a soft-bristled tooth-brush. Do not use ordinary toothpaste, bleach, vinegar or soap unless directed to do so by your dental professional.

4. Brush all surfaces thor-oughly. Avoid using brushes

with stiff bristles, as they can damage the denture material.

5. Rinse dentures well under the faucet to remove all traces of cleaning paste.

6. While you sleep at night, soak your dentures in a cleanser (such as Fixodent®) or one recommended by your dental professional.

7. Brush your gums, tongue and palate with a soft-bristled regular toothbrush to remove plaque and stimulate circu-lation. Then reinsert your dentures.

Classes Starting Soon

* Minimum numbers for course to commence.

Go OrganicThis course is ideal for lifestyle block owners, home gardeners

and/or commercial growers and will provide key knowledge

and skills required for organic growing. The overall aim is

to build ecosystems, promote biodiversity and increase soil

and plant health, instead of relying on artificial fertilisers

and poisonous sprays. We will explore the latest trends in

sustainable farming both internationally and within NZ.

A practical, science-based approach is used to separate myth

from fact, while exploring a wide range of organic techniques

and methods. On successful completion you will be awarded a

Certificate in Organic Horticulture (Level 3).

CODE: A258

“I can’t think of a topic I could honestly say was not of some rel-evance to my lifestyle”.

“I hope this course continues- keep up the good work”.

“Was a steep learning curve, and each topic was beneficial to my involvement in the farm”.

You now have the opportunity to join one of these classes in Spring when new evening (6:30pm to 9pm), or daytime (9am to 3pm) classes begin early September.

This week’s quesTion: name three Marlborough towns

where The sun is delivered?

By Damian GeorgeLocal singer Richard McCal-

lum added another item to his list of achievements when he received a highly-commended merit at the New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards in Gore on Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Richard scooped the accolade in the country rock section, singing country legend Merle Haggard’s Okie from Muskogee.

It continues a successful recent

run for the country music enthu-siast, after he won three awards at the Southern Alps Country Music Awards in Timaru on Easter Weekend, including first place in the senior novice sec-tion.

His other awards came in the open senior ‘50s and ‘60s songs category, where he was runner-up, and in the over-40s section, where he won another highly-commended.

Richard says he did not enter the competitions with the aim of achieving recognition.

“I’m not a young fella, I’m at the other end,” he says.

“I’m doing it ‘cause I just love my country music.”He says he believes there is

still a place on the country music scene for the old-time American-style classics sung by the likes of Haggard and others.

Mongrels kept their Marlborough volley-ball winter league finals hopes alive with a 3-0 win over Marlborough Boys’ College [MBC] on Thursday.

The Picton-based side saw off a spirited MBC challenge to eventually win 25-21, 25-22, 25-15.

They now have to beat Fairweathers Magnum in tomorrow’s final regular season match to secure a finals berth.

In other A-grade action, Fairweathers Magnum held on to

win a thrilling deciding set and take out their match against Wayward Spikers.

Heading into the third set at 1-1, Fairweathers sneaked over the line with a 26-24 final set victory.

In Grade B, Not Sure upset joint-leaders Cri Clovers 2-1, winning a tight second set 29-27, while Just Woodbourne accounted for Treefellas 3-0.

In the non-competition game [played instead of a bye], Woodbourne Cannons defeated MBC 2-1.

Q – “What is God’s name??? A person has got to have a name, how can we build a relationship with him if he has no name.” (Anne M – email)

A – God has many names as do most of us. Part 1

With all due respect, the way your question is worded presents a number of illogical premises that need to be cleared up before your question can be answered:

1) A person HAS to have a name – this is a logical argument, not a biblical argument; are the billions of babies stillborn, aborted or miscarried not persons if they were never named? 2) A person has to have A name – you seem to imply that we have one name when most of us have many – I have been or am called Jeff, Jeffrey, Glenn, Mr Williams, Dr Williams, Pastor Williams, preacher, pastor, dad, daddy, Chuck, and many other names by my wife and close family members I’d rather not print. 3) You can’t build a relationship with someone if they don’t have a name (or as you probably meant, if you do not know their name) – knowing one of their names may help, but I have relationships in varying stages of growth with many, many people whose names I am an unaware of. There are a number of angelic beings in the Bible who refused to share their name with mankind (Gen. 32:29; Judges 13:18) establishing the principle that it was far more important to obey God’s commandments than to necessarily know names.

In answering your question, there are two avenues open to us from the Bible:

1) What is the Creator of the universe called in the Bible? What names did the Holy Spirit of God record or utilize when inspiring the scriptures and recording them for our benefit? 2) What does the Bible specifically say about the “name” of God? In other words, when the actual word “name” shows up identifying God in some way, what is said?

Next week we will seek some more specific answers!

Marlborough tennis players Ca-leb Mooney and Jeremy Crouch are set to hit the courts of USA universities in coming months in a bid to “turn some heads”.

Caleb, who has just completed a five-week stint playing in Ger-many’s national tennis league, and Jeremy, who flew to the US last week, will visit colleges throughout America in August and September in an attempt to secure a scholarship deal.

The recruitment process, known as ‘try-outs’, involves college hopefuls turning up to universities to challenge its existing players in an effort to impress selectors.

Caleb, who played for the semi-professional TC Ottersweier club in Germany, says he wants to take the opportunity with both hands.

“I hope to just play well enough to turn some heads,” he says.

Playing against other German clubs, Caleb won three of his four singles matches and two out of four doubles matches during his

time with TC Ottersweier.“Playing [in that league] has

bettered my game simply because I can play some good matches in Germany - matches I don’t get back home,” the 19-year-old says.

“I need some work on the fore-hand. I found myself playing very tight tennis there. I’m still working on it.”

Before embarking on their college mission, both Caleb and Jeremy [also 19] will spend two months at the Camp America programme in Pennsylvania.

The programme involves coach-ing and supervising local chil-dren. Jeremy and Caleb will teach both tennis and swimming.

The ten members of the Witherlea School year six rippa rugby team are gear-ing up for the game of their lives at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim tonight.

Not only will the side be playing the curtain-raiser for Marlborough’s clash with a Japan XV at 6pm, it will also be playing for a place at the Rippa Rugby World Cup in Auckland in August.

Witherlea will take on Nelson’s Richmond Pri-mary School for a spot in the tournament after win-ning the Marlborough pri-mary school tournament in Blenheim recently.

The team played six matches, including the final against Renwick which it won 6-5.

The Rippa Rugby World Cup will comprise the top 20 year six teams from across New Zealand, and will be held at North Har-bour Stadium on August 8 and 9.

Each team will represent a nation taking part in Rugby World Cup 2011.

Rippa rugby is the name given to junior touch rugby, whereby defenders must rip a flag from the belt of a ball carrier to stop them.

The match tonight will consist of two 10-minute halves, and begins at 5.30pm.

Chasing the American dream

The big Time: Local tennis player caleb mooney at new York’s Times square recently.

Former All Black Christian Cullen may have summed up the rather perplexing situation at the Hurricanes in a characteristically simple manner.

“Let’s be honest, everyone knows they’re two completely different teams and players. The Canterbury style will never work with the Hurricanes. That’s obvious.”

That was the 58-test All Black and Wellington and Hurricanes stalwart’s take on the sensational dumping of All Blacks Andrew Hore and Ma’a Nonu by Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett recently.

Cullen’s assessment is interesting because, as an outsider looking in, it appeared that way. That is: the Crusaders and Hurricanes adopt a completely different attitude to

the way they go about their rugby. But to hear it from a former

player is quite staggering.Cullen is suggesting that former

Canterbury and Crusaders hooker Hammett’s disciplined approach to coaching is not something that was going to sit well in the capital.

W herea s t he Cr usader s implement a more ‘structured’ approach, the Hurricanes players are encouraged to be free spirits, to express themselves – according to Cullen.

It seems rather ironic, then, that Hammett’s presence appears to have rocked the boat [although some observers maintain the storm was brewing].

Departing hooker Hore stated Hammett’s dictatorial approach

led to the fallout, with a “lack of consultation” not impressing the Hurricanes’ senior players.

It has been revealed Hore paid the price for enjoying ‘a midweek drink’, while Nonu was deemed to be disruptive and petulant.

It is hard to know who to blame: Hammett, who wanted to introduce a more stringent, perhaps school teacher-like policy, or Hore and Nonu, who believed themselves to be too senior to change their ways for a first-year Super rugby coach.

Either way, both Hore and Nonu will likely be named in the All Blacks squad this year, as they have been for close to a decade.

I wonder if Graham Henry lets Hore enjoy a midweek pint.

By Celeste LodewykWalking upstairs to the entrance at Black

Dragon Tattoo Studio, the high-pitched vibration of two tattoo guns sound out, signalling the start of a new working relationship between two talented tattoo artists.

Four weeks ago, local boy Nick O’Hagan joined forces with Ken Spencer, owner of the award-winning Black Dragon Tattoo Studio on High Street in Blenheim, and was quickly put to work.

“It’s been a pretty busy few weeks and at the same time it’s been great working with Ken who has been in the industry a long time,” Nick says.

Ken says he has been tattooing most of his life, but professionally for around 22 years.

This is not the first time Ken has worked with another tattoo artist, but he says it will be the first time one has stayed permanently.

“You get sick of working alone,” he

laughs.“Nick is bringing new blood into this

place and it’s good to have different styles of work.”

Nick previously ran his own home-based tattoo studio called Slaughter House and has been tattooing for nearly three years.

Most of his skill has been self-taught, he says, as well as learning from professionals by watching them in action.

In addition to his tattooing, Nick is also a baker.

By Celeste LodewykNew stall holders at the annual Careers Even-

ing held at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 on Monday night say it was so successful that they will be coming back next year.

The annual event is hosted by the Marlborough Boys’ College and features representatives from a wide variety of training institutions and universities.

This year saw 36 stall holders which attracted 1011 people to the evening, a number which organisers say was their best yet.

Andrea Adams of Travel, Careers and Train-ing (pictured) told the Sun that it was the best careers expo that she attends throughout New Zealand.

“It is unique with regard to the high number of parents that come along,” she says.

Ross Sice of Smart Careers says that this is the only expo he goes to now, and commented that he really enjoys the friendly atmosphere and the way parents and students engage.
