MUSICFEST’17 + 30 EVENTS,EXHIBITIONS & WORKSHOPS

Welcome to this year’s Royston Arts Festival programme, brought to you by Creative Royston!

I am excited to take over the reins and be able to bring you such a busy and fun-filled programme, including another Community Arts Event in Priory Memorial Gardens that promises to offer new creative adventures for all to try and toe-tapping entertainment, including a festival-first Ceilidh dance!

The programme cover art is the result of more than 100 local students, aged 4-14, entering a competition on the festival theme, “Changes”, with a multitude of interpretations submitted: from lifecycles to diversity, seasons to neighbourhoods. Local artist byLeigh used 20 kids’ art to create the final piece. Find out more about the story behind the art during a special exhibition in Royston Library from 5 September, culminating in a charity auction of the work during the festival weekend.

The festival theme “Changes” can be seen through workshops, performances, exhibitions from local students at Royston and District Museum, and from artists and photographers across Royston and beyond, at the Town Hall, Methodist Church and Curwens.

Other festival highlights include Divergent Theatre performance of scenes from Arabian Nights (page 10), the CADS production of Pygmalion (page 6) and GStars Changes Performing Arts Workshop (page 10).

For our part, the Creative Royston committee, have been hard at work planning three key events to liven up the town centre over the weekend. On Saturday 24 September, Priory Memorial Gardens will host a fun family arts event from 2pm to 6pm (see page 9 for more details). Then on Sunday the town will buzz to the sound of a fantastic array of bands and musicians across ten different venues throughout the afternoon; see page 11 for MusicFest’17 and follow the latest updates on www.RoystonMusicFest.uk. Then to draw the festival to a close, we’ll have the ever-popular Festival Finale Concert at the Parish Church, where the rafters will be raised by local schools and music groups celebrating the talent we have in the town.

If you can’t wait until 22-24 September to #getcreative, then join us for the Changes Film Festival, in conjunction with Royston Picture Palace, 14-16 September (page 5).

I do hope you’ll make a weekend of it and join in with a range of events. And while you’re enjoying them, do share your thoughts and photos via our Facebook and Twitter feeds.
