22-2 Bryophytes• Definition: small, seedless, non-vascular plants

– Non-vascular: lack special tissues that carry H2O and nutrients throughout plant

• Habitat: found on land near streams, rivers, or other moist, shaded areas

• Most common are the mosses

22-2 Mosses

• Well adapted to life in these habitats:

– Wet habitats (mosses need plentiful H2O for reproduction)

– Nutrient-poor soils (mosses often called “pioneer plants” because they live on bare rock and help accumulate soil needed for other plants)

– Harsh habitats (mosses are most abundant plants in polar regions)

22-3 Seedless Vascular Plants

• Most common are the ferns– Thrive in areas with a lot of moisture and little

light

22-3 Seedless Vascular Plants

• Vascular tissue – special tissues that carry H2O and nutrients throughout plant– Xylem – carries H2O upward from roots to rest

of plant– Phloem – carries nutrients and sugars

throughout plant• ** Both types can carry materials against the force

of gravity

Draw “Alternation of Generations” picture

• Arrange paper in six sections as shown in class• Title the upper left and upper middle squares “Alternation of Generations”• Draw figure 22-2 on p. 552. Draw it on the upper left hand square of your six-sectioned paper• Write the caption for picture underneath your drawing• On upper middle square, define: haploid, diploid, gametophyte and sporophyte
