– Non-vascular: lack special tissues that carry H2O and nutrients throughout plant

• Habitat: found on land near streams, rivers, or other moist, shaded areas

• Most common are the mosses

• Well adapted to life in these habitats:

– Wet habitats (mosses need plentiful H2O for reproduction)

– Nutrient-poor soils (mosses often called “pioneer plants” because they live on bare rock and help accumulate soil needed for other plants)

– Harsh habitats (mosses are most abundant plants in polar regions)

• Most common are the ferns– Thrive in areas with a lot of moisture and little
