UCLA’s new Speed-Strength andConditioning Facility located in theAcosta Training Center has doubledin size to 15,000 square feet and isdirected by Hall of Fame speed-strength and conditioning coachE.J.”Doc” Kreis, who was hired inJune, 2003.

Kreis, a two-time strength andconditioning coach of the year, willoversee the athletic development ofmore than 700 student-athletes. Heis joined by a highly accredited staffincluding associate head coachKerri Barrett Husbands, first assis-tant coach Troy Jorgensen and as-sistant coaches Karl Jordan, JonFussell and Ryan Beckwith.

An athlete’s development re-quires a comprehensive plan thatmaximizes all physical componentsof competition. UCLA’s AcostaSpeed-Strength and ConditioningFacility and the program developed

by the Speed-Strength and Condi-tioning staff are instrumental inequipping all UCLA athletes withthe physical tools required to suc-cessfully compete in the nationalspotlight. Each athlete receives in-dividual attention from the staff indeveloping all facets of athleticism, such as strength, force production, and power.

The Acosta Speed-Strength andConditioning Facility is composedof 27 weight lifting platforms, astate of the art dumbbell area, thirtyupper and lower body weight ma-chines, and a variety of cardiovas-cular equipment. The room is high-lighted by the Athletic PerformanceArea, a specialized space dedicatedto enhancing acceleration/decelera-tion capabilities, foot speed, bal-ance and coordination, verticaljump, and flexibility for all our ath-letes.

    THE ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE TRAINING FACILITY

UCLA’s Speed-Strength and Con-ditioning program is designed toproduce and improve the four fun-damentals of speed-strength: reac-tion strength, explosive strength, absolute strength and startingstrength. The ultimate goal is totransfer the gains made as a resultof hard and consistent work into thecompetitive environment. Thetransfer of the four fundamentals tothe field, court, or pool allows UCLAathletes to compete successfully atthe highest level of their sport.

Ultimately, UCLA athletes are ex-pected to work day in and day outto improve upon their athleticism. There are no secret training meth-ods – just hard work, consistency, effort, and attitude. The pride andtradition behind UCLA athletics isexpected to be upheld by every ath-lete whom enters the Acosta Speed-Strength and Conditioning Facility.
