21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 23, 2020
Many commentators today say the family is under siege. They notice how the internet is undermining the basic communication in a home, with cellphones buzzing and everything that comes in through high-speed internet. Children are often exposed to information that they are not ready for, developmentally speaking, and parents have a hard time giving the right example shielding sacred family events off from digital interruptions. How often do you see, even in a restaurant, family-members having their phones besides their plates, ready to break away from the intimacy of the celebration? Today, you hear about scores of people who feel anxiety and a lack of basic safety. A good guess is that on the bottom of that experience is a lack of stability and
intimacy in the family. Humankind is endowed by God with a capacity for an interior life, for quiet reflection. They are the basis for our emotional intelligence. But we need to learn how to use and develop those human qualities. And the main place for that learning process is the family. Human beings are relational because they are created in the image of God, the Holy Trinity. Our fundamental relationships are grounded in the indwelling of Persons in God. From there come Fatherhood, Motherhood, Sonship, Daughtership, Brother/Sisterhood and the Spousal covenant. We practice that all in the family. We learn how to be a father, a mother, a couple, a child or a sibling. And the Church, by its structure, nurtures all those relationships. They are articulated every time a person approaches the Church for a sacrament. And that begins already with Baptism. The parents present the child to the Church and by that fact alone they are affirmed as a sacramental unity that has brought forth new life. Their choice of Godparents is an expression of brother and sisterhood. They have learned how to trust other Catholic adults into the responsi-bility for the education of their children. By asking the Church for the Baptism of their child, they acknowledge the paternal and maternal authority of the Church. This is only one example of how the Church and the family work together like clock-work. Family relations are created by God and therefore treated with the highest respect by the Church. Yes, there are many examples of broken families of pain that is caused by dysfunctionalities within the home. But they are like the strings of a piano that need tuning. The unpleasant sound is usually not caused by the piano itself. This is a result of the way the piano has been maintained. What it needs is a bit (or a lot) of TLC, Tender Loving Care. May we, at Saint Mark, bring back that sense of family. That we are a community of communities, for the wellbeing of all who are involved.

Muchos comentaristas dicen hoy que la familia está sitiada. Se dan cuenta de cómo el internet está socavando la comunicación básica en un hogar, con los teléfonos celulares sonando y todo lo que viene a través de Internet de alta velocidad. Pero necesitamos aprender a usar y desarrollar esas cualidades humanas. Y el lugar principal para ese proceso de aprendizaje es la familia. Los seres humanos son relacionales porque son creados a imagen de Dios, la Santísima Trinidad. Nuestras relaciones fundamentales se basan en la morada de las Personas en Dios. De allí vienen la Paternidad, la Maternidad, la Hija, el Hermano/Hermandad y el convenio con el mismo. Practicamos todo eso en la familia. Aprendemos a ser padre, madre, pareja, hijo o hermano. Y la Iglesia, por su estructura, nutre todas esas relaciones. Se articulan cada vez que una persona se acerca a la Iglesia para disfrutar de un sacramento. Y eso comienza ya con el Bautismo. Los padres presentan al niño a la Iglesia y sólo con ese hecho se afirman como una unidad sacramental que ha dado a luz una nueva vida. Su elección de padrinos es una expresión de hermano y hermandad. Han aprendido a confiar a otros adultos católicos en la responsabilidad de la educación de sus hijos. Al pedir a la Iglesia el bautismo de su hijo, reconocen la autoridad paterna y materna de la Iglesia. Este es sólo un ejemplo de cómo la Iglesia y la familia trabajan juntos como un reloj. Las relaciones familiares son creadas por Dios y, por lo tanto, tratadas con el más alto respeto por la Iglesia. Sí, hay muchos ejemplos de familias rotas de dolor que es causada por disfuncionalidades dentro del hogar. Pero son como las cuerdas de un piano que necesitan afinación. El sonido desagradable no suele ser causado por el propio piano. Esto es el resultado de la forma en que se ha mantenido el piano. Lo que necesita es un poco (o mucho) de TLC, un cuidado amoroso y tierno. Que nosotros, en San Marcos, traigamos de vuelta ese sentido de la familia. Que somos una comunidad de comunidades, para el bienestar de todos los que están involucrados.

ST. MARK DRIVE-IN MASS INSTRUCTIONS
General guidelines: Please remain in your vehicle for the duration of your stay at St. Mark.
You may only leave your vehicle to use the restroom or in case of emergency. Currently, the only restroom available for use is the handicap restroom. Children will not be allowed to go to the restroom unaccompanied by an adult.
Collection: Please enclose your offering in an envelope, preferably in the form of a check made out to St. Mark Church. Consider giving online at www.st-mark.net or using Text to Give, text your donation amount to the number (424) 370-1756 on your cell phone. The collection will be picked up by our ministers of hospitality at the normal time of the offertory hymn. They will approach each car wearing face masks and gloves and they will pick up your offering from the driver side only.
Communion: By lowering your car window(s), you are indicating that you would like to receive communion. The Priest and Eucharistic Minister, wearing a face mask, will come to each vehicle on both sides to distribute Holy Communion. In order to receive communion, you must have your face mask on. Additionally, we encourage you to sanitize your hands before the priest and eucharistic minister arrive at your vehicle. Communion will only be given on the hand, and to maintain social distancing, we ask that you stretch your arm out your window. Passing the Host to another passenger is not permitted. If you are wearing gloves, you must remove one to receive the Precious Host.
Departure: Departure from the parking lot will begin following the end of mass. The gates will remain closed until then. Follow the instructions of our ministers of hospitality who will direct you to exit through the Coeur D’ Alene Ave. gate or through the Garfield Ave. gate.

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
IS 22:19-23 Thus says the LORD to Shebna, master of the palace: “I will thrust you from your office and pull you down from your station. On that day I will summon my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah; I will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and give over to him your authority. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. I will place the key of the House of David on Eliakim’s shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut when he shuts, no one shall open. I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family.”

Is 22, 19-23 Esto dice el Señor a Sebná, mayordomo de palacio: “Te echaré de tu puesto y te destituiré de tu cargo. Aquel mismo día llamaré a mi siervo, a Eleacín, el hijo de Elcías; le vestiré tu túnica, le ceñiré tu banda y le traspasaré tus poderes. Será un padre para los habitantes de Jerusalén y para la casa de Judá. Pondré la llave del palacio de David sobre su hombro. Lo que él abra, nadie lo cerrará; lo que él cierre, nadie lo abrirá. Lo fijaré como un clavo en muro firme y será un trono de gloria para la casa de su padre’’.

En efecto, todo proviene de Dios, todo ha sido hecho por él y todo está orientado hacia él. A él la gloria por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.
