Reflection

Celebration Day/Back to Parish Mass On Thursday 23rd of May, students will start their day at their local parish church for morning Mass with their parish community. They will return to school by bus for Celebration Day activities with a barbecue lunch included. CRC staff will be at all parishes and supervise the return to school. The College day will have a normal finish time of 3.20pm. Students are to wear PE uniform and are expected to make their own way to church and are required 15 minutes before Mass begins. Mass times: St Anthony’s 9.15am St Dominic’s 9.15am St Bernard’s 9.15am Upon return to school students will have the opportunity to be involved in a range of activities and events to celebrate the day. Year 12 Student Leaders have been meeting each Tuesday planning and organising the day. A variety of rides, food stalls and entertainment will be provided. The rides and entry to the DJ entertainment will have a small cost of $2 or students can purchase a wristband for $10, giving them unlimited rides and entry to the DJ entertainment in the Hall. Funds raised from the day will be distributed to Brother Beausang School Nairobi, St Vinnies and the Royal Children’s Hospital. VCAL and the Year 11 Business Management classes will be also be involved in the day providing food stalls. The canteen is not open on the day but students will be able to purchase food from the various stalls.

Congratulations Congratulations to Leanne Netto, Adam Benca and Emily O'Rourke. Leanne has been selected to represent Victoria in the Under 17 Indoor Cricket competition to be held in Sydney in June. Adam Benca (Year 12) and Emily O’Rourke (Year 10) have been selected to represent CRC in the School Sport Victoria 2013 Swimming Team. They will travel to Adelaide in September to compete at the School Sport Australia Swimming Championships. More details on page 3. Mark Sheehan Principal Collecting students before the end of the school day If students are to leave school before the end of the school day because of a pre arranged appointment it is necessary to have a parental note in their diary. Students leaving before the end of the day are to have their sign out note signed by their Year Level Coordinator before leaving. This arrangement also applies if the student has to go home because they are ill and the College office has contacted you to collect them. When it is time for them to leave, students report to Student Reception and have their details entered in the electronic system. In recent times the College office has been contacted by some parents to organise for the pick up of their child before the end of the school day because it has been wet and raining. A school of approximately 980 students cannot operate around such requests, and I appreciate the support of parents in this matter.

Year 7 & 8 Rockit A correction to last week’s newsletter regarding who supported the school in bringing the Project Rockit team to the College. It should have read Catholic Church Insurance not Catholic Care. As an extension of everything covered in the presentation, the team of Project Rockit would like to share with you an exciting competition they have launched - the Project Rockit STOP WATCHING AWARDS! Students and teachers across Australia have the opportunity to nominate their peers/students who have STOPPED WATCHING and stood up to the negative online cyberbullying culture and created a supportive online environment! Robert Blackley Deputy Principal - Students Food Technology Last week some of the Year 8 food classes were completing their Meal Planning Assessment task. The practical component required them to produce a meal to be shared with their partner. They made chicken lem-on schnitzel, honeyed carrots, broccoli and a smashed potato. 8M did a wonderful job and certainly appeared to be enjoying a hot lunch at school. Well done all.

Semester 2 Subject Changes Initial requests for changes to Semester 2 electives will be available during this week (Tuesday, May 21 to Friday, May 24.) Students will need to see me to register their reason for change. Later I will check to see if changes are possible and then distribute a Change of Subject Form to have signed off by parents, teachers and Year Level Coordinators. Further access to changes will be available during the last 2 weeks of Term 2 for VCE subjects and the first 2 weeks of Term 3 for Year 9 and 10 students (as occurred at the start of the year). This will be communicated through the newsletter and student bulletin at that time. If parents have any questions about the process, please contact me at the College. Bacchus Marsh Coaches Bus Travellers All students that travel on a school bus operated by Bacchus Marsh Coaches should have received a DEECD form to fill out. Although its title is ‘Application for Permission to Travel – Eligible School Students’, its main purpose is to ensure that we can attain bus lists and medical information in case of emergency situations. I apologise for the lateness of the form but we have only just been notified of this need. Forms were given to students as they boarded buses last week and parents / guardians are reminded to return completed forms to the College Office by this Friday. We will then compile and forward them to the local Bus Coordinator. Years 7 & 8 Timed Assessment Tasks All Year 7 & 8 students will do a Timed Assessment Task in Mathematics and English at the same times. These assessment tasks will take place in Homerooms and take the place of the normally timetabled class. These are listed below.

Student News Congratulations to Adam Benca and Emily O’Rourke who have been selected to represent CRC in the School Sport Victoria 2013 Swimming Team. Adam has been selected for the following events: 50m backstroke 100m backstroke 200m backstroke 4 x 50m freestyle relay Backstroke leg of the 4 x 50m medley relay Emily has been selected for the following events: 200m butterfly 200m individual medley 400m individual medley Emily has had a great year in the pool this year winning the SACCSS age group champion, two Victorian State Silver medals and making 12 State Finals and winning a Victorian All Juniors Silver Medal and also competing at the Australian Age Championship in Adelaide in four events. Emily also recently won the Metro West Age Group Champion. Congratulations Leanne Netto who has been selected to represent the Victorian Under 17's Indoor Cricket Girl's Team to be held at Sydney this year. Leanne has played in India and participated in an Under 10 boys team - being the only girl on the team! Leanne has also played for Taylors Lakes Cricket Club, while representing the Under 12's, her team earned the title of Premier League Champions (NWCA). She also received the Best Player Award at Taylors Lakes. Leanne has also represented the Western Spirit and Outer Eagles team for the Female Pathway Program run by Cricket Victoria. She has been rated as one of the top 20 cricketers in her age group (girls) in the whole of Victoria. Fantastic effort Leanne!

Victoria University Legal Studies and Australian Politics (LSAP) workshop On the weekend Kayte Howard, Nicole Bourke, Emily Bettio, Erynn Stuhldreier, Elise Muller and Belinda Unwin attended the last session of the Legal Studies and Australian Politics workshop at Victoria Universities City Campus. The program provided the students with an opportunity to engage in activities related to Politics and Law with students their own age, from other schools around Victoria. We congratulate all students and encourage more students to take up these opportunities when they arise. In term 3, the University will be offering this program again. On the final day I attended the student’s presentation and was very happy to see the students so engaged and clearly enjoying themselves. Daniela Harrington & Karina Dunne (Humanities) Victorian Parliament and Magistrate Court Excursion The Unit 1 Legal Studies class and Year 10 Political Law class recently went on an excursion to the Victorian Parliament and Melbourne Magistrates Court. We were taken on a guided educational tour of Parliament. Students got to sit in the Chambers of Parliament, visit the Parliamentary library and hear stories and tales of events that have occurred during the Parliament’s history. The students not only learnt about the political aspects of Parliament but were also entertained by the history of the building itself. Students got to sit in the Speaker’s chair, the Premier’s and Cabinet seats and the Opposition and Independent’s seats. Students gained a real and practical understanding of the content we cover in class. Following our Parliamentary tour we attended the Melbourne Magistrates Court. Students had the opportunity to attend different courts in operation, including summary hearings and committals. It again allowed students to have a practical experience rather than just the classroom experience of what a court is like and its operation. Although there were not enough hours in our day, the experience was insightful and edu-cational and all the students represented CRC with pride. Daniela Harrington & Karina Dunne (Humanities)

Cabaret 2013

The theme for Cabaret 2013 is “You’re the Voice”: a look at music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. Our 4 talented Voice Coaches: Joel, Seal, Delta and Keith will lead performers through a competition based on the popular TV show. Dance and music rehearsals for this year’s Cabaret are in full swing. We have a massive Hairspray Dance Troupe number shaping up, our coaches are preparing their singing teams to do battle, the College Ensemble are rehearsing a number of Glee-inspired numbers. We will also have special guest performances by the Spice Girls and John Farnham!! VCE drama ensemble performances Students in Year 11 and 12 drama performed their ensemble performances last Wednesday evening in the drama studio. Congratulations to all students who delivered engaging performances that entertained the solid turn out of CRC families who witnessed the event. Sandwiches for the Matthew Talbot Soup Van – Footscray The Matthew Talbot soup Van – Footscray provides meals to people in need seven nights a week. Over 50 volunteers run the program and feed over 150 clients every night. The volunteers provide meals and support to people located in the Footscray, Maidstone, Newport and Williamstown area. For the Soup vans to operate each night they rely on the generosity of donors, both financially and through gifts in kind to enable this voluntary program to exist. Year 9 community service in action As part of social justice and community action we are asking each Year 9 class to provide the sandwiches and snacks for the van for one night. The homeroom teachers will inform the students of the date for their class. Each class will need to donate the supplies required to make 18 loaves of sandwiches and to provide other snacks such as muesli bars, snack packs of fruit, nuts, biscuits, chips etc. The Year 9 Student Leaders will be visiting the kitchen in Maidstone where the volunteers prepare the food and pack the van each night before it leaves on the nightly round. Year 9 0’Reilly will be the first class to make the sandwiches on Tuesday 28th May. Other classes will follow. Also needed are; Socks, coats, blankets, beanies and soap. Donating Blood On Wednesday a small of group of Year 10, 11 and 12 students will be donating blood at the Melton Mobile Unit. Most of them are first time donors but are generously going to give of their time to roll up their sleeves for the benefit of others. Year 7 Camp From Monday the 29th of April until Friday the 3rd of May the Year 7 cohort along with their homeroom teachers and support staff made their way to Lady Northcote Recreation Camp, in Rowsley. While on the camp the students were given the opportunity to be involved in many different recreational activities which included canoeing, high and low ropes courses, mountain biking, archery, orienteering and a variety of other activities designed to foster self-esteem and a sense of community. What our Year 7 students thought of the experience: Bol – “I liked the talent quest and mostly the camp fire.” Clint – “We slept and we ate good food. It was a good time. Thank you teachers.” Amel – “Camp was an amazing experience getting to know new people and have fun.” Mikayla – “The first night was magical and the second night was comfy, we watched a great movie.” Kelsey – “Year 7 camp for me was fun. I faced my fears on high ropes and became closer to people along the way.” Connor – “It had been good to mix with different kinds of people.” All Year 7 homeroom teachers and support staff felt that all students who attended the camp found it to be a very worthwhile experience.
