Considering the >'lostorly aind,it \1 . :3.8 believed th!).t a crossl7ind axis from the southuost uould be thobest to avoid heat thermals.

    (2) Mdssion NUmber272. Oita: Although 110 Jima is theonly rudar checkpoan't betrlCe! base and lamfall, r adar navigation to thistarget is easy because the ceut-se is alon,g tho distinctive peninsulacoast lines of Shikoku and .:B;yushu. Oita is Locatod directly on thecoast and is fairly difficult to locate beQ.ausothe city return blendsinto the heavy coastline on long radar ranges. For this reason cr'enawore to be briefed to use short ~anges to identify the city. 4n ox~callont check point for course is the return from the: hilly terrain, apprOXimately 1 raiLe rres't of Oita.

    (3) Mission Nl:u:lbor27'i. Ku17ana: The beacon at 1'110 Jima,~ith a range of approximately 125 nautical miles, is the on~ radarcheck point fo:r' navigatiOR on this mission. The landfall is a dist-inctive coastal check point as well as a good point for making a r~~wind run. Other usable checkpoints in navigating to tho initialpoint arc Osaka,IWot6, and Bil7a Ko. Tile initial point located on the~est coast of Biwa Ro, has boen used successfully on all previousstrikes into the Nagoya area. IDJ: l '7an0. is located on 11 distinctive river't7est of Nagoya Whichgives an excellent return on the west-east axis~ith a good radar returns coming from the bridgos in the northeasternsection of the city.
