Mentoring Matters: A Call to Service

Do you remember coming home for the first time after your child was diagnosed? You probably felt scared, overwhelmed and a little lost. Did you have a JDrF mentor? if not, i bet you wish you did. Was there a parent support coffee meeting in your area? if not, i bet you wish there had been. Most importantly, we hope that there was something or some way that JDrF was able to see you through those first challenging and confusing weeks, months and even years.

JDrF prides itself on being a volunteer driven organization. JDrF strives to help support you so that you, your family and your loved ones with T1D can enjoy a better quality of life. As such, volunteers are needed to help us improve programs and engage new volunteers.

The mentor program is a very easy way to get involved and help other families going through exactly what you went through when your child was first diagnosed. it can be as simple as a call or an email telling a newly diagnosed mom or dad that everything will be all right. More than likely, you and your mentee will become friends that can bounce ideas off of each other and discuss the latest and greatest in T1D developments.

is mentoring not your thing, but you still want to help? Consider hosting a parent support coffee in your area. Western pennsylvania is a large territory, so the more coffee hosts we have, the better! All you have to do is schedule a date at a local meeting place (coffee houses and panera Bread Cafes are popular picks), and show up! Special topics are always welcome, but it is guaranteed that once you get a bunch of parents of children with (or without) T1D in one spot, the conversation will not be lacking. We hope that you will consider volunteering in one of these ways, and help us support our wonderful families! For more information on the mentor program or parent support coffees, please contact gillian McTiernan, Outreach Manager, at [email protected] or 412-471-1414 x2.

Pittsburgh Marathon Why just run a marathon when you can be part of Team JDRF and run for a cure?

Sunday, May 5, 2013 Register today at www.jdrf.org/pittsburghmarathon

“growing up with type 1 diabetes, i hoped that i would still be able to do everything i wanted. if it wasn’t for the research JDrF had done (and continues to do) and the services i have been provided with, i may not have had the opportunity to run my first half marathon last spring. it was such an overwhelming feeling crossing the finish line knowing i was not only helping myself and my family, but everyone else living with type 1 diabetes! i can’t wait to be part of Team JDrF again this May 2013!” said Melissa noonan, a second year member of Team JDrF.

Living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is like running a marathon – the dietary restrictions, multiple daily blood tests and injections of insulin seem endless. JDrF is getting closer to the finish line – a cure to this devastating disease. With your help, JDrF can continue the research that will lead to better treatments, and eventually a cure for T1D.

Join Team JDrF. We will celebrate as you cross the finish line and as JDrF comes closer to the finish line to a cure!

“participating in the pittsburgh Marathon (either full, half or relay) is an incredible experience. participating and knowing that you are making a difference in the lives of people with T1D makes it far more rewarding. As a parent of a child with T1D, raising money to find a cure is critically important. The marathon is a test of endurance, as is dealing with and managing diabetes. Finding a cure for diabetes is a marathon, not a sprint. Thinking of what my son, Maddox, deals with on a daily basis, and all of the other people supporting the cause, helps inspire me to continue pushing, to never stop, and to somehow make it to that finish line,” said ron Fingers.

Team JDRF Benefits:• Your fundraising minimum for JDrF covers your pittsburgh Marathon bib fee• personal fundraising website and guide makes fundraising simple• pre-race pasta party with other Team JDrF runners• JDrF running singlet• Once the race sells out, JDrF will still have bibs available• The top fundraiser for each event at the time of the Marathon will receive a gift

Did you know there is an easy and educational way to help raise money for T1D research? The JDrF Kids Walk program is a great way for kids to learn about the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes and feel empowered by raising money to help cure T1D.

it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3...The first, and most important step, is connecting JDrF with your child’s school to schedule the assembly and walk dates. Then, a JDrF staff member or a volunteer will do a presentation for the students, explaining the causes of T1D and how it is treated, and will ask the children to help kids with T1D by raising money for their Kids Walk.

Finally, approximately two weeks after the assembly, the actual walk is held, and the students and staff celebrate with mini bagels donated by panera Bread. The top fundraising student receives a $50 panera Bread gift card and a chance to win a trip to Aruba! Even better, all of the students that raise at least $10 are eligible to receive fun

incentive prizes from JDrF. You see? it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3! So please,

help introduce us to your child’s school today, and let’s get one step closer to a cure! For more information about the Kids Walk program, please contact gillian McTiernan, Outreach Manager, at [email protected] or 412-471-1414 x2.

Ride with JDRF in 2013

The JDrF ride to Cure Diabetes is the adventure of a lifetime. Experience a new way to support JDrF. Are you an adult with type 1 diabetes (T1D) looking for a way to get involved? Are you the parent or grandparent of someone living with T1D and looking for an exciting way to help find a cure? participants get the opportunity to achieve two challenges: they raise funds to support research leading to a cure for T1D and they meet personal goals to accomplish this challenging and exciting cycling experience. riders ages 13 and up at all experience levels join forces to find a cure for T1D. Be a part of this growing team!

Matt McHale said, “i have so many reasons to love JDrF’s ride to Cure Diabetes, which i plan on doing this year for the seventh time. it’s taken me to amazingly beautiful places, like Death Valley and glacier national park. i’ve made lasting friends among the hundreds of other riders. As a rider with T1D, it’s helped me prove to myself that i can overcome the challenge of riding 100 miles on my bike—and have fun while doing it! Most of all, it is an inspiring reminder of the spirit and determination of the JDrF community—people with the disease, parents, siblings, friends, etc.—in finding an answer to type 1 diabetes. i would encourage anyone who shares that spirit and who can ride a bike—even just around the block—to seriously consider doing the ride. There are different fundraising levels

and different distances, and the coaches are fantastic. i would love to expand the Western pennsylvania contingent!”

You can also be a part of a JDrF ride team. rich Kosuda rides for the Western pA Chapter as part of a corporate team based out of the new Jersey JDrF Chapter. rich said, “My involvement in the JDrF ride to Cure Diabetes Tremco Corporate Team started simply as a desire to give back to the community, have some fun, and finally give in to the persuasive recruiting of our T1D team captain. My experience proved to be so much more. The T1D community showed me tremendous courage, strength and compassion like i never experienced before. i am proud to be part of their success story to defeat this disease. My involvement in the corporate team proved to myself and all my supporters that you can reach beyond yourself to give back to a cause that enhances the meaning of your life and so many that struggle with T1D on a daily basis.”

Whether you are newly diagnosed or have been living with T1D for a long time, JDRF is committed to improving the lives of all people affected by the disease. We aim to accelerate the progress of research to provide better treatments, prevention, and ultimately a cure for T1D. We hope that you will enjoy reading about one of the latest exciting aresa of research that has the potential to bring us closer to our goal.

Combating Complications through Collaboration people with T1D are at risk for developing complications

from the disease. Diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease) is one of these complications, and it can be life threatening. in this form of kidney disease, kidney function declines, which can eventually lead to kidney failure. About 30 percent of people with T1D develop the condition.

The kidneys are made up of hundreds of thousands of tiny units called nephrons, which filter the blood and help remove waste from the body. But in people with T1D, the nephrons thicken and become scarred. in some cases, tight blood-sugar control can delay or prevent the onset of kidney complications, but T1D can still lead to kidney failure.

To investigate genetic components of the condition, the JDrF genetics of Diabetic nephropathy Collaborative research initiative has been formed. This initiative brings together top scientists in the field to build on previous research and share their findings, in order to identify disease pathways and prevent and treat the condition. More than $7 million will be provided to the main institutions collaborating on the project: the Broad institute of MiT and Harvard; Joslin Diabetes Center; the University of Toronto; and the University of Virginia.

This global collaboration of researchers and scientists has assembled samples from more than 20,000 subjects with T1D and kidney disease, and the process of determining each participant’s genetic makeup is under way. Data is expected to be available in late 2013. Source: Cool research news, JDrF.

This past fall, the Clearfield Lady Bison Soccer Team conducted a fundraiser called “goals for a Cure” with the proceeds benefitting JDrF. Led by Clearfield Area High School junior, McKenna Aleksivich, the team reached out to the community asking them to support JDrF by pledging donations for each goal the team scored throughout the season. The team collected pledges ranging from $.05 to $5 per goal.

Lucky for JDrF, the Lady Bison team had a fantastic season with a record of 15-1-2 and won the District 9 Class AA Championships. The team scored an impressive 78 goals for the season! JDrF was presented with the check totaling $2,827 at the end-of-season soccer banquet.

The Lady Bison soccer team voted to donate to JDrF in honor of fellow team member Kaitlyn Mitchell’s younger sister, Kelsey who has type 1 diabetes.

Thank you McKenna and the Lady Bison soccer team! We wish you a successful 2013 season!

West Virginia Branch UpdateSymposium Success—The WV

Branch held its first ever Symposium for Families in Clarksburg, WV on Saturday October 27th. Sessions included: a sports and diabetes discussion with a panel of adult and teen type 1 athletes; a panel of school nurses and parents who addressed school issues and nutrition; the psychology of diabetes; a research update and an opportunity for teen and adult type 1s to talk among themselves about life with diabetes. nearly 150 people participated from all across the state. Based on the success of this event, the WV Branch is already planning future symposiums.

Sugar for Reindeer—The Second Annual Sugar for reindeer was held Saturday, December 8 at river City restaurant & Conference Center in Wheeling, WV. The event, aimed at promoting community awareness of T1D, raised nearly $4,000.

Children in attendance enjoyed a visit with Santa. Event organizer, Lorri Schodzinski, said the event is becoming a holiday favorite among local children who enjoyed visiting with Santa and

participating in various crafts such as face painting, ornament creations and cookie decorating. Children were given a magic dust of sugar, glitter, and oats to be left out on Christmas Eve for the reindeer. Santa’s message was: “Sugar is for reindeer—not little apple dumplings.”

Walk to Cure Diabetes—The WV Branch also is planning a series of Walk Kick-Off parties for early March to be held in Morgantown, parkersburg, Hurricane, Beckley, and Wheeling. The Annual WV Walk to Cure Diabetes will be held on Sunday, May 19 at the State Capitol in Charleston, WV.

in 1992, a young boy was diagnosed with diabetes. His father, hunting for the best possible treatment, did exhaustive research. He found that insulin pump therapy offered dramatically better control than injections, with far less risk of long-term complications. plus his son could eat and exercise freely with an insulin pump. But all that tubing seemed like such a burden for a young boy—and where would the pump go during swimming lessons? The father thought there had to be a better way. in 2000, insulet Corporation was formed and the Omnipod System was created as the

first tubing-free diabetes insulin pump system.

insulet Corporation began partnering with JDrF in 2008 and has expanded their involvement in supporting JDrF’s mission to find a cure for T1D by funding the most promising research to cure, treat and prevent the disease. insulet Corporation supports the pittsburgh and Westmoreland Walk to Cure Diabetes by underwriting the Children’s Area. The company has also funded Outreach events like a winter snow tubing outing and an annual event at idlewild and Soak Zone where more than 100 JDrF supporters gather for crafts provided by Excela Health, lunch and information from various diabetes suppliers and then enjoy a day at the park. Finally, for the second consecutive year, insulet Corporation has underwritten JDrF’s participation in the Dick’s Sporting goods pittsburgh Marathon so that the fundraising that the runners do can go toward the cure and not toward expenses.

“Thanks to the generous partnerships with companies like insulet we are able to bring families face to face with the

latest technology in the field, while having the outreach opportunities of bringing the T1D families together. JDrF together with our corporate partners strive to improve the lives of those living with T1D until the day we have our cure,” said Sheila pomarico, Vice president of Outreach for the Western pennsylvania JDrF Chapter.

This is truly a mutually beneficial partnership where insulet Corporation can speak to people directly affected by T1D and JDrF can offer activities for families with T1D to get together and enjoy time with other people living with the disease.

Mark and Brenda Wolper said, “Our son, Max, has used the Omnipod for five years. It is so nice to see Omnipod at JDRF events supporting research for T1D. We look forward to the

next advances that Insulet is working on to continue to improve the lives of T1D people”.

Donate Now 2013 Fund A CureFund A Cure is a unique opportunity for you to donate to the mission of JDrF.

Since its inception in 1970, JDrF has funded virtually every major breakthrough in diabetes research. The path to cure T1D is as complex as the disease itself, but tremendous progress is being made every day to develop new and better treatments to improve the lives of people who have T1D and keep them as healthy as possible while we strive to reach our goal of a cure. JDrF is driving the discovery, development and delivery of therapeutics to improve the lives of people with T1D and eventually cure it.

At the 21st Anniversary rainbow gala on April 20, 2013, there will be a unique opportunity to become a direct part of this process. it is an opportunity to donate directly to research and fund the science that will transform this disease and change the lives of our families and friends with T1D.

If you are unable to attend the Gala, you may still participate in Fund A Cure by mailing your contribution today. We hope you will join us as we challenge ourselves to increase the pace of science and focus on our goal… to better treat, prevent and ultimately cure T1D.
