The Franz Mayer Museum opened in 1986 to house, display and maintain Latin America’s largest collection of decorative arts. The collection was amassed by stockbroker and financial professional Franz Mayer, who collected fine artworks, books, furniture, ceramics, textiles and many other types of decorative items. Much of the collection comes from Mexico and other Latin American countries with items dating from the 15th to 20th centuries. The silver collection is one of the most important in Mexico. The museum is housed in the historic centre of Mexico City in the former San Juan de Dios monastery and hospital, an 18th-century structure built on the site of the original 16th century hospital that was destroyed in a fire.

Arbitration and cross-border insolvency: a 21st century global insolvency toolkitFor decades arbitration has been used as a method of resolving large global commercial disputes. It is perceived to be less expensive than litigation and to bridge effectively the vagaries of national judicial systems, with different rules, concepts of the rule of law and procedural anomalies such as fact-finding and years to trial. Arbitration has not historically been part of the insolvency professional’s toolkit – but should it be? Update on the new Mexican insolvency legislationMexico’s Ley de Concursos Mercantiles was first enacted in 2000 and amended in 2007. Several major cases were filed under the LCM including the notorious cross-border cases of Vitro and Mexicana de Aviacion. The issues played out in these cases provided the impetus for amendments to the LCM in January 2014. The panel of noted Mexican insolvency practitioners will discuss the significant cases which gave rise to these changes and the newly revised legislation which will foster an efficient and effective insolvency system for the protection of estate assets as well as the rights of creditors and debtors.

Conference sell-outs

The IBA places its conference in venues of a suitable size for the event;

however there are times when our conferences may sell out. Should this

happen, prospective delegates will be informed and a waiting list will

operate. The waiting list will function on a ‘first come, first served’ basis,

subject to receiving registered delegate cancellations. The IBA will not be

liable for any travel or accommodation expenses incurred by an individual

who travels to the conference without a confirmed place at the event.

Continuing Professional Development/Continuing Legal Education

For conference delegates from jurisdictions where CPD/CLE is mandatory, the IBA will provide a Certificate of Attendance for the conference. Subject to CPD/CLE requirements, this can be used by conference delegates to obtain the relevant number of hours’ accreditation.

A CPD/CLE Certificate of Attendance is available to conference delegates on request. Please ask at the IBA conference registration desk for information on how to obtain the certificate.

The organisers may at any time, with or without giving notice, in their absolute discretion and without giving any reason, cancel or postpone the conference, change its venue or any of the other published particulars, or withdraw any invitation to attend. Travel arrangements and visas

The best form of transport available from the Benito Juarez International

Airport is taxi. For your safety, we recommend you only use the taxi

The International Bar Association (IBA), established in 1947, is

the world’s leading organisation of international legal practitioners,

bar associations and law societies. The IBA influences the

development of international law reform and shapes the future of

the legal profession throughout the world. It has a membership of

more than 50,000 individual lawyers and 206 bar associations and

law societies spanning all continents, and has considerable expertise

in providing assistance to the global legal community.

Grouped into two divisions – the Legal Practice Division and the

Public and Professional Interest Division – the IBA covers all

practice areas and professional interests, providing members with

access to leading experts and up-to-date information. Through the

various committees of the divisions, the IBA enables an interchange

of information and views among its members as to laws,

practices and professional responsibilities relating to the practice

of business law around the globe. Additionally, the IBA’s high-

quality publications and world-class conferences provide unrivalled

professional development and network-building opportunities for

international legal practitioners and professional associates.

The IBA’s Bar Issues Commission provides an invaluable forum for

Insolvency Section overview

The Section on Insolvency is the most prominent international

association of lawyers interested in insolvency and creditors’ rights

law. Members are encouraged to participate actively in the Section’s

work both at its semi-annual conferences and, throughout the year,

through the work of its Subcommittees and through articles in the

Section’s Journal.

The Section serves as an Official Observer to the UNCITRAL Working

Group on Insolvency Law, which it has assisted in developing the

UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency and with which it

is currently working to identify areas for harmonisation of domestic

insolvency laws, aimed at ensuring certainty and effectiveness in

cross-border trade and other financial transactions. The Section

works closely, on these and other efforts, with other multinational

institutions concerned with insolvency, such as the World Bank,

the International Monetary Fund, the Asian Development Bank

and the Group of Thirty, as well as with organisations of insolvency

practitioners such as INSOL International, the Association of

European Insolvency Practitioners and national insolvency specialist

organisations.

The role of the Insolvency Section is also to coordinate the activities

of the Insolvency Subcommittees.

Twice yearly, the Section on Insolvency sponsors substantive

educational sessions on the most cutting-edge issues in insolvency

and creditors’ rights, drawing speakers from its members as well

as from government, business and industry, the judiciary and

academia. In conjunction with these sessions the Section sponsors

a networking dinner which has become legend for exceptional

ambience, cuisine and camaraderie.

Latin American Regional Forum overview

The Latin American Regional Forum covers all countries in Latin

America as well as Mexico, Puerto Rico and Spanish-speaking areas

of the Caribbean. The Forum provides a focus for all activities in

the region. The group organises sessions at IBA Conferences and in

particular has been instrumental in ensuring that a Latin American

perspective is addressed during relevant special sessions. The Forum

is closely affiliated with the North American Regional Forum as the

regions are geographically proximate and share many issues.
