Today you will need your place value ruler that was included in your home learning pack.

You can also sketch out your own place value chart on a piece of scrap paper. Today you will be focusing on ones, tenths and hundredths, so draw your place value chart like the one below: Ones Tenths Hundredths

Ascending order

Descending order

When numbers are arranged from smallest to largest.

For example,

5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

When numbers are arranged from smallest to largest.

For example,

10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5

To compare the value of two numbers we need to look at the place value of each of the digits.

8.79 > 8.698.79 has a greater value than 8.69 because it has a greater value of tenths.

48.7 > 4.8748.7 is greater than 4.87 because its highest value is 4 tens and 4.8’s largest value is only 4 ones.

To compare the value of two numbers we need to look at the place value of each of the digits.

4.98 < 5.024.98 is less than 5.02 because it has fewer ones.

We want to try and order these numbers.

We want to find the smallest number first.

We need to start in the tens column.

The number with the fewest tens is 27.02

This means that the smallest number is 27.02

We want to try and order these numbers.

The other numbers both have 5 tens so we need to look at the next column to the right, the

ones column

There are the same number of ones in 53.2 and 53.81so we

need to move to the next column to the right, the tenths column

We want to try and order these numbers.

53.2 has 2 tenths and

53.81 has 8 tenths

This means that 53.2 is the next number

The largest number is 53.89

The correct order is:

27.02 53.2 53.89

If we wanted to order these numbers in ascending order, first we need to look as the highest place value of these numbers, the ones

8.8 8.9 8.77 8.88

8.8 8.9 8.77 8.88Each number has the same number of ones so now we must move on to the next place value, the tenths.

8.8 8.9 8.77 8.88

We have two numbers with 8 tenths, one with 9 tenths and one with 7 tenths.We have now found the largest and smallest numbers so can start to rearrange the order.

8.8 8.9 8.77 8.88

8.77 8.9

We are left with 8.8 and 8.88 so now need to compare the hundredths.

8.8 8.9 8.77 8.88

8.77 8.9

8.8 8.888.88 has 8 hundredths and 8.8 has no hundredths. So 8.88 has the greater value.

So the correct order is

8.8 8.9 8.77 8.88

8.77 8.98.8 8.88

8.8 8.888.77 8.9
