Welcome to Westminster

Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit, we sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ!

Following our 10:00 a.m. worship service, we invite you to meet today’s “ambassador,” Susan McPheeters, at the back of the sanctuary. She will have a gift for you, and can share information regarding our many ministries for children, youth and adults. She can also guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church.

Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

Worship Aids - Large print Presbyterian Hymnals and hearing devices may be obtained from any usher.

Would you like to know more? Check out our new website at www.wpc.org.

ORDER OF WORSHIP AT 8:15 A.M.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP Loving God, you have so made us that we cannot live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from your mouth. Give us a hunger for your Word, and in that food satisfy our daily need;through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*PASSING OF THE PEACE

*CALL TO WORSHIP

We gather for worship aware that we hunger for many things. We hunger for meaning, we hunger for truth, we hunger for hope.

Christ is the true bread of life.He is the one who can satisfy our deepest yearnings.

*HYMN NO. 264 “When in Our Music God Is Glorified” Engelberg

CALL TO CONFESSION

We open ourselves to God’s transforming power when we admit we have lost our way.Let us confess our confusion of priorities.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God, we have relied on the treasures of earth for our meaning. When they do not satisfy, we try to fill the void with more things. We cling to our possessions as if they could save us, and embrace our habits as if there were no other way. We settle for appearances rather than substance, for looking good rather than doing good. We want to change, but renewal is risky, and we find it hard to commit ourselves to you.We reach for the forgiveness and courage you alone can give.

The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God by Katie and Ryan Kirchenbauer who were married at Westminster yesterday.

Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719 or [email protected]. Available dates for flowers are August 30, September 6, 20 and 27.

Are you wearing a nametag? Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag allows others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are in baskets at all entrances. Extend hospitality, kindness and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

“Westminster to Go” Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at www.wpc.org.

Gifts donated in memory of Rev. Chad Miller will be used to support Westminster Youth Mission Trips. Chad recently wrote, “Mission trips not only change us, they also have the potential to change the world. When we come home we know that we are accountable for what we have learned and cannot leave things the way they are.” Please make contributions payable to Westminster Presbyterian Church and indicate “in Rev. Miller’s memory” on the memo line.

Today begins our Month of Musical Masterworks, an annual tradition unique to Westminster Church, which brings major instrumental works to enrich our 10:00 a.m. worship service each Sunday during the month of August. The series begins this morning with a solo organ sonata by Felix Mendelssohn, and continues next week with a sparkling flute concerto by Luigi Boccherini. See page 13 for a complete listing for the month.

Please join the Parents of Little Ones (POLO) group on Sunday, August 16, at 2:00 pm for a fun afternoon at Graylyn Crest Swim Club (2002 Marsh Rd.). There is a baby pool for the little ones, and the bigger kids will (probably) love the 3-meter high dive. Cost is $2.00 per person, which can be paid that day. Please RSVP to Karen Dietz at [email protected] or (302) 656-0343 and plan on bringing drinks and snacks to share.

Thank you! The Joint Finance Committee is encouraged by the response to the special appeal to give a little extra of your treasure to help the church keep active the many ministries our members and community depend on. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to give of our time, our talents and our treasure for the kingdom of God. Won't you prayerfully consider responding to the special appeal by giving an extra $96 this year? Please indicate "additional pledge" in the memo line on your check or on the offering envelope.

The Church Offices will be closed Fridays through September 4th,. If you wish to contact a pastor during an emergency, please use the home number in church directory.

Saturday Morning Yoga is taking a break for the summer. Look for an announcement in late August for the date and time that Saturday morning yoga will resume.

The deadline for the Sunday bulletin and the “Westminster Weekly Word” is Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Send announcements and articles for either of the publications to [email protected].

Gardeners Needed Each year a dedicated group of Westminster members helps care for the Memorial Garden by weeding

and pruning the plants.  Volunteers are asked to work a few hours in a designated two-week period.   If you can help sometime this summer, please call Ellie Furry at 239-4937 or e-mail [email protected].

Calling all intrepid gardeners. The Weekly Weeders gather every Thursday at 8:30 a.m. to tackle weeds in Westminster borders and beds. Bring a bucket (we have extras), a digger, clippers, gloves and water to drink. Invite your friends and meet at the 13 th Street entrance where we will determine the day’s target. Plan to work for one hour. Call Kris Qualls 652-7272 if you have questions or suggestions.

Delaware Emergency Management Agency is conducting a survey to access how prepared Delaware citizens are for an emergency. It can be taken online at http://dema.delaware.gov/ by clicking the Emergency Preparedness and Response Survey - take survey’ link. The survey has 19 questions and generally takes less than 10 minutes to complete. One of the benefits of the survey is that is helps people think about what preparations they might need to make to be ready for an emergency that could face citizens of our state.

BLESSING THE BACKPACKS – Sunday, August 23. Mark your calendar for this very special event! We are seeking to provide backpacks for 200 students in grades K-5 th at nearby Shortlidge Academy elementary school. If you’re shopping for your child, we hope you’ll shop for another child as well. And if your “To Do List” doesn’t include shopping for school supplies, please send us your contribution and we’ll do the shopping for you! For details, see the upcoming mailing to each member of our congregation or call the church office (654-5214). Thank you!

CONGREGATIONAL CARE AND PRAYER

13

A Centering Prayer time occurs every Thursday at noon in the Ruth Christie Room. Anyone is welcome to participate. Basically, those who come spend thirty minutes in silence. Silence allows us time and space to empty our minds, quiet our brains’ chatter, and be still and attentive to God.

If you are carrying a difficult burden – a Stephen Minister is available to meet with you following both services and to offer compassionate support. If you go to the piano at the conclusion of either service, someone with a Stephen Minister nametag will be there to speak with you, and if desired, pray with you.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem far away, and we may neglect to realize that Americans, as well as Iraqis, Afghans, and members of coalition forces, continue to die each day. As Christians, we are called to pray for the spreading of peace and justice and an end to violence. If someone in your family is serving in these wars, we ask that you let us know so that we may include that person on our prayer list. (Contact Suzie Hurlock: 302-654-5214 ext. 131, or [email protected].). This week we pray for:

Those known to the Westminster community presently serving in the Middle East:Afghanistan: Neal Moody and Andy StofferIraq: Ken Bachman and Beau Biden
