STUDENT LEADERSHIP Next Monday 25 February at 9.00am in the Sports Hall, our Student Leaders for 2019 will be presented with their badges at a special parade. School Leaders from 2014 will be in attendance and we look forward to honouring our leaders in this way. At Newtown State School, our student leadership program is seen as an integral part of ‘every child, every day, excellence in education’ and offers an opportunity to hear our students’ voice. It also provides our students with the opportunity to participate in a process that develops resilience for all who choose to give it a go and for those who will be acclaimed for 2019, an opportunity to develop their strength of leadership.

BEDAZZLED NUMBER 1 The Bedazzled Number 1 was awarded this week to 1H for having the best attendance record for the week. Congratulations 1H!

The challenge for the next week is going to be for the class who demonstrates the best expected behaviour during our parades over this week and next.

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION Religious Instruction has commenced this week for those students in Years 1 – 6 whose parents/carers have given permission for their participation. Today, your child will receive an information brochure on Religious Instruction education, along with a form for you to complete should you wish to change the preference for your child. Should no changes be required, you need not return the form. SCHOOL DRESS CODE Please note the following addition to the school dress code which was discussed and endorsed at the last P&C meeting in relation to student hair colour. It is preferred that a student’s hair remain its natural hair colour during the school term. POSITION VACANT FOR PARENT/CARER ON PBL COMMITTEE Expressions of interest are now invited for a parent/carer to join as a member of the Positive Behaviour for Learning team. This team generally meets twice per term, usually on a Tuesday afternoon from 3:15 – 4:15pm in weeks 3 and 10. The team is comprised of the principal, deputy principal, the PBL internal coach and a range of staff that work across a representation of year levels. A parent/carer perspective is highly valued and provides the opportunity to have input into the progress of Positive Behaviour for Learning at Newtown State School. Please email [email protected] to indicate your interest as soon as possible. STUDENTS LEAVING LEARNING AREAS WITHOUT PERMISSION The goal of Positive Behaviour for Learning is to improve and maximise academic and social outcomes for all students. As a strategy to minimise the frequency of a few students choosing to leave the classroom without permission, the following process is currently being implemented. This process has been spoken about on parade with students and was endorsed at the last P&C meeting.

Page 3: 21 February 2019 - Newtown State School · 326,7,21 9$&$17 )25 3$5(17 &$5(5 21 3%/ &200,77(( ([suhvvlrqv ri lqwhuhvw duh qrz lqylwhg iru d sduhqw fduhu wr mrlq dv d phpehu ri wkh

Following the use of our 4-step process for managing behaviour (as outlined in the school’s Responsible Behaviour Plan available on the school website) and any individualised behaviour plan enacted, if a student chooses to leave the learning area without permission, a timer will be started and students will be required to ‘make-up’ the time they are out of the classroom and complete any missed work in one of the following ways:

In the classroom or during a play time* in place of class free time or a preferred activity At home with work accompanied by the note for parent/carer to sign and return

Students who are issued a ‘chill out’ card know that they may use it once only per session; a maximum of three times per day. Anytime they choose to leave the classroom without permission thereafter, will result in the same process above being applied. PARENT/CARER WAITING AREA We appreciate and enjoy the presence and involvement of parents and carers in our school. For the safety and wellbeing of all at our school, we ask that parents, carers, young children or any person who is:

waiting with children prior to the start of school at 8:45am arriving prior to 3.00pm to pick up students to…

Please wait under B block (joined to the administration building), rather than outside classrooms as this can be

distracting to students. This is particularly relevant to those with students in year 1 or 2. If you are onsite for more than 15 minutes, please ensure that you sign in and out at the office. Any volunteers

are also required to sign in/out at the office (including swimming helpers). Parents and carers of Prep students are also able to wait in the Prep playground.

Students must wait on the ‘green’ until 8.30am when they are dismissed. We appreciate your support in maintaining a school site that is safe for all.

WEST ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL RESULTS Congratulations to all our swimmers for a great effort at the Zone Carnival. There were many personal best performances on the day. Special mention goes to Jack W for being selected in the West Zone team to compete at the Regional Carnival on March 6. Well Done! Regards Dave Ragh PE Teacher

Positive Behaviour for Learning News What is a GOTCHA? Students can earn GOTCHAs in the classroom and in the playground by behaving appropriately and following the school expectations and rules. A GOTCHA is just like a raffle ticket, it has the child’s name on it and the reason why they received the GOTCHA. Students collect their GOTCHAs in the classroom and save them up to trade for rewards. This week the PBL lesson focus is that learners are responsible and respectful by following adults’ instructions. Students are reminded that when given an instruction by an adult to follow it immediately. This could be promoted at home by encouraging your children to follow your instructions and thanking them for doing so. Students looked at this rule last week, but in this week’s lesson they will use role play to practice real life scenarios.

Chaplain’s Chat! The unusual long run of hot weather we have been having lately is making things harder for everyone in our school community. Most of us are finding it harder to cope the longer it lasts. We get worn out and find it harder to concentrate for long and it’s a struggle. This weather does show how much resilience we all have and how well we can keep going when it’s tough. Working together, we can help each other cope with the heat. We can help encourage each other, so we don’t react as much or quickly. We can work together on ways to cope with the heat. We can work on staying calm ourselves – taking deep breaths before answering when spoken to and understanding that because we’re tired and hot, we might work a bit slower and find some things hard. The positive is, the hot weather will eventually pass. In the meantime, we can encourage each other, and ourselves, in getting through each day one step at a time! So this week, how are you encouraging yourself, and others, to stay calm and positive during the warm weather? Andrew Bell (Chaplain) Work Days and Contact Information This year the days I am working at Newtown will again be Tuesdays and Thursdays. I can be contacted here at the school by calling the main office on 4614 5777, leaving a message at the main office or by emailing [email protected]. White Ribbon Segment One interesting thing to think about is that there is quite a difference between liking everyone and respecting everyone. There are going to be some people that find it hard to get along with. We may not agree with what they say, what they do or how they treat others. That is ok – there are probably some people that find us hard to get along with. But, whilst we might not like some people, we should actually treat each and every person with respect. Every person is allowed to have their own thoughts and ideas

– and they may be very different and even opposite to what we think. We don’t have to like them, but we should respect that they are a person too and are allowed to have their own thoughts and ideas. Just like people should allow us to have our own thoughts and ideas, we should respect they can too! Let us, as individuals, and as a community as a whole, work on showing respect to every person remembering they can have their thoughts and ideas too.
