Indian Logistics Sector: Towards 5 million Economy• India ranks 35th out of 167 countries in the ‘Logistics Performance Index 2018’ prepared by the World Bank.• Indian logistics industry estimated at $160 billion, and expected to grow at a CAGR of 10% to $215 billion by 2022. • The sector employed 22 million people in 2017. The number is expected to go up to 40 million by 2019.• Tech-focused logistics startups in India attract $1.5 billion in investment.

Major government initiatives:• The Integrated Transport & Logistics Policy includes construction of 50 economic corridors, 35 logistics parks,

and 10 intermodal stations.• The Comprehensive Logistics Action Plan 2022 to lower cost of logistics from 14% of GDP to 10% of GDP. The

plan will save $150 billion.• ‘Bharatmala Pariyojana’, ‘Sagar Mala’ project and ‘UDAN’ scheme will provide a boost to the logistics system. • Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) and DMIC are the biggest drivers of change in the logistics sector.

CILT India Expo 2019• CILT India expo 2019 is a premier transport and logistics event

that addresses the entire supply chain of the logistics industry.

• Jointly organised by the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport - India in association with Exhibitions India Group.

• Annual demand for logistics and warehousing space stands at 32 million sq.ft., outstripping the supply of 31 million sq. ft., and expected to clock up to 38 million sq. ft. by the end of 2019. (JLL)

Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT)Women in Logistics and Transport is the International Women’s Group at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. The first WiLAT chapter was founded in 2010 by a group of female Institute members under Aisha Ali Ibrahim of CILT Nigeria. During the 2012 CILT Annual Convention in the UK, the importance of the WiLAT message was recognized and the Institute committed to replicating its work and experiences across the world. Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT) was thus launched in India on 11 March 2012.

Its mission is to promote the status of women in Logistics and Transport, to bring together those who support talent and career development and to provide a support network and mentoring opportunities for women in the sector.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (CILT)The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport International is the leading professional body associated with logistics and transport globally. With over 33,000 members in over 100 countries worldwide, CILT holds unparalleled professional international recognition. Established in 1919 and received the Royal Charter in 1926, the Institute has an exciting history behind it, but is always adapting in ways consistent with current logistics and transport issues globally.

In India, CILT was started in 1987 with headquarters in New Delhi, it was upgraded to a territory status and established as a National Council in March 1998. The National Council has independent authority to manage

Institute affairs of CILT (India) and elects members in accordance with qualification requirements in respect of education and transport experience which are laid down by the International Council of the Institute. CILT India has practicing logistics professional and academicians as members besides more than 40 corporate members. CILT India acts as a knowledge disseminator and an independent influential voice on all issues related to the Indian Logistics and Transport sector.

CILT India has attained landmark achievement by signing an MoU with the Department of Logistics, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and the Chairman is also a Member of the Governing Council of the Logistics Skill Council.

Indian Logistics Sector: Towards 5 million Economy

AVIATIONIndia’s aviation industry has emerged as one of the fastest growing in the country, where air cargo exports are growing at the rate of 9% per annum.

• Draft National Air Cargo Policy Outline 2019 to make Indian air cargo and logistics one of the most efficient, and cost & time effective globally in the coming decade.

• 100% FDI under automatic route is made available for air transport service.

• Government is planning to invest $1.83 billion for development of airport infrastructure and aviation navigation services by 2026.

COLD CHAINIndia is the world’s largest producer of milk, second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables, and has a substantial production

of marine, meat and poultry products. This has resulted in the creation of a very large cold chain infrastructure in the country.

• The Indian cold chain market was worth Rs. 1,121 billion in 2018, and projected to reach Rs. 2,618 billion by 2024.

• It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14.8% during 2019-2024.

• Organised players comprise barely 8-10% of the segment.

FREIGHT FORWARDERSGrowth in manufacturing, e-commerce, and retail industries has spurred freight movement across the nation and beyond.

• All India freight traffic movement is estimated at 2,800 BTKM, and expected to increase to 13,000 BTKM by 2030.

• This segment is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 15% in the next five years and is expected to surpass $300 billion during the period of 2017 through 2022.

• Freight by the roadways sector comprises more than 60% of the total 2.2 million heavy vehicles and 0.5 million light transport vehicles in the total road freight fleet size.

RAILWAYS The Indian Railways is the world’s 3rd largest rail network and boasts of a system spread over 115,000 km, with 12,617

passenger and 7,421 freight trains, plying 23 million travellers and 3 million tonnes of freight on a daily basis. Government is working on a National Rail Plan to integrate the rail network with other modes of transport, and develop a multi-modal transportation network.• Indian Railways freight revenue rose at a CAGR of

6.36% to reach $18.16 billion in 2017-18. • Indian Railways targets to increase its freight traffic to

3.3 billion tonnes by 2030 from 1.1 billion tonnes in 2017.

• Freight traffic through the Dedicated Freight Corridors will increase at a CAGR of 5.4% to 182 MT in 2021–22 from 140 MT in 2016–17.

ROADSSpanning over a length of 5.5 million km, India boasts of one of the largest road networks in the world.

• A total of 200,000 km national highways planned for completion by 2022. Total length reached 122,434 km in FY18.

• Total length of roads constructed under Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) was 47,447 km in 2017-18, with 9,829 km developed during FY18.

• A target to construct 10,000 km of national highways in FY19 has been set.

• Under ‘Bharatmala Pariyojana’, total length of projects awarded was 6,400 km up till October 2018. A further 34,800 km road projects have been proposed to be constructed.

• As of August 2018, projects worth $29.83 million approved by GoI to improve connectivity among Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Diu.

SHIPPING & PORTSUp to 95% of India’s trading by volume and 70% by value is done through maritime transport. There are 12 major ports, and

205 notified minor and intermediate ports.

• Major ports boast of a capacity of 1,452 million tonnes. During FY18, cargo traffic in these ports stood at 679.36 million tonnes.

• Cargo traffic at non-major ports estimated at 491.95 million tonnes in FY18.

• Capacity addition at ports expected to grow at a CAGR of 5-6% till 2022.

• GoI to raise $15.8 billion for developing ships, building ports and improving inland waterways.

• Under ‘Sagarmala’, 6 new mega ports and 10 coastal economic regions will be developed.

• FDI of up to 100% under the automatic route for port & harbour construction and maintenance projects allowed. The sector received a cumulative FDI of $1.64 billion between April 2000 and December 2018.

WAREHOUSINGTill now, majority of the warehousing activities in India was undertaken by the unorganised segment. Rapid growth in

the transactions by organised players, especially in the e-commerce and FMCG segments, is changing the landscape of the industry.

• The ‘Make in India’ campaign and government efforts to set up industrial corridors to promote the manufacturing clusters, has created a new market for warehousing facilities.

• Warehousing industry is expected to grow at 10% p.a.

• Currently, warehousing accounts for approx. 25% of the logistics cost

• Warehousing investment stood at around 26% of the total PE investment into real estate during January 2014 – 2018, with $3.4 billion of institutional capital coming into the sector.

• New facilities and greenfield projects accounted for 67% of total investments, followed by 27% for acquisition of complete projects.
