Field Trip Fun

The fourth and fifth grade classes went to SWACO (Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio) and the Kelton House for our field trip on September 29th. First I willtell you about the land fill. Our bus drove up onto a scale to get weighed. At the top of the landfill, we watched this semi truck back onto a platform that tipped, dumping all the trash onto the huge pile. Then the large bulldozers with metal spiked tires drove over the trash to flatten it out. We learned the holes, called cells, they dig to put trash in at 40 feet deep! They use several layers of protection so it doesn't poison the water supply. That makes it a sanitary landfill. It didn't smellas bad as I thought it would. I really enjoyed going there, I learned a lot. When we were leaving, they gave us rulers made out of recycled money.

After that we went to the Kelton House. It was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Mary, the owner, found two little sisters hiding in her garden. They helpedone continue on to Canada and the other one lived with them because she was too sick to continue on. When she grew up she married the handyman. Over 100run away slaves stopped there on their way to freedom.

Other land fill facts:

Did you know that 60% of the materials sent to the land fill are recycable? Once recycable items are sent to the landfill, they cannot be sorted so recycle now!

Our land fill in Franklin County estimates in 25 years it will be filled. Then we will have to pay more to truck our waste to Cincinnati.

Keep On Counting!

The PTA tracks the number of hours worked by volunteerseach year. The overall numbers are submitted to the Ohio PTAand the school district and are used to show how much workvolunteers do for our school. Our volunteer hours help todemonstrate our “value” added to the school. This informationis also important as we apply for grants to help fund our Eco-Lab.

Please remember to sign in and out each time you work atschool in any capacity. The Volunteer Sign-In Sheet is locatedon a clipboard on the filing cabinet outside the office. You canlog hours worked outside the school in the Volunteer Notebook. Each volunteer keeps a separate page in the notebook. Takea blank sheet, write your name at the top, and fill in theinformation.

If you don’t have time to get to school to log your hours, orforget to do so while you’re there, please submit the informationto the Volunteer Coordinator, Marilyn Rogers, at [email protected] or 471-4776.

Where'd My Favorite Program Go?

As part of our parent feedback survey two years ago, wegave our programming a solid review. One great suggestionwas to rotate some of our programs on an annual basis. Thisallows us to have more options in our programming and keepit feeling fresh. For example, instead of "Build It!" night thisFebruary, our students will have a "Skate into Math" night. We'll trade our ice skates for roller skates at the SunburySkate Club.

Some programs will still be held annually, like the TalentShow. However, we added a new twist last year --MultiCultural Fashion Show. The PTA strives to be inclusiveof all students and families to encourage participation in ourprograms.

We appreciate your support and love hearing your ideas, that's how fresh new programming happens at CCMS! Toshare your suggestions, please email our PTA President,Amy DeRose, at [email protected].

Developmental PT’s take a slightly different approach to treatment as theymove kids forward with their gross motor skills. Developmental PT’s treatkids with diagnoses ranging from simply developmental delay to morecomplex concerns regarding genetic, chromosome, and neurologicaldiagnoses. In fact, we focus on reaching gross motor milestones which mayinclude fitting, crawling, and walking. Age ranges typically vary from kidsjust a few months old through the school-aged years.

October is National Physical Therapy Month and an opportunity forphysical therapists and physical therapist assistants nationwide toeducate their communities about who physical therapists are and whatthey can do for you.

Physical therapists are experts in restoring and improving the motionthat is so crucial to your well-being. For instance, when children havepain or limited mobility, sports and play activity can become difficult, limiting your child’s participation and development. It is good to knowthat physical therapists are the experts on whom you can depend tohelp them move forward.

What does a physical therapist do and what are the educationrequirements?

A physical therapist improves motion and function through evaluatingyour flexibility, strength, balance, proprioception, posture, and bodymechanics with daily activity and sports. In many cases, this helps toavoid use of medications and invasive surgeries. Most schools now require a doctorate degree to become a physicaltherapist. This requires intensive classroom education and clinicalrotations. Physical Therapists are also required to pass a licensingexam and be credentialed in each state they practice.

What specifically do sports and orthopedic physical therapiststreat?

Physical Therapists treat a wide variety of injuries and medicalconditions. Common one’s experienced by children are Sever’sdisease, Osgood Schlatter’s disease, Patellafemoral Syndrome ,Sprains and Strains, Rotator Cuff injuries , Back Pain, Tennis and LittleLeague Elbow , ACL Tears and Reconstruction, Deconditioning ,W hiplash, Scoliosis, Postural Dysfunction, and Fractures.
