20TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON Audience and Singer Favorites BY TIMOTHY J. KRUEGER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR t the outset of our 20th Anniversary Season, ballots were distributed to the audience and singers at our first concerts in September. 30-some works, short and long, spanning the centuries, all of which St. Martin’s has per- formed at some point in its history, were among those to be voted for by the recipients. This concert is the result of those ballots, and could easily, there- fore, be titled “St. Martin’s Greatest Hits”! We will begin with a few singer favorites – Stanford’s Beati quo- rum via, Lotti’s Crucifixus, and Terry Schlenker’s The Poem, the Song, the Picture. We then move on to the top vote-getters among audience members – “Never weather-beaten sail” from Parry’s “Songs of Farewell,” the Kyrie and Agnus Dei from the Byrd Mass for Four Voices, and the Biebl Ave Maria. We conclude the first half with a set of pieces which turned out to be favorites of both audi- ence and singers, the Duruflé Quatre Motets (the most famous of which is Ubi Caritas), and Terry Schlenker’s Alleluia. The second half is a single large work, which was the over- whelming favorite piece chosen by the singers, and a work that was in the audience’s top five choices, the Mass for Double Choir by Frank Martin. Martin was a 20th century Swiss composer, quite avant-garde in his later years, but this mass, written in 1922 when he was 32, is extremely evocative and poignant, and what disso- nance there is expresses the meaning of the text. The Agnus Dei is particularly haunting, with Choir 1 singing a plaintive melody in unison, while Choir 2 creates an underlying harmonic foundation that sustains and enhances the melody above it. As a nod to our history in this 20th Anniversary Season, for the Saturday night concert we return to one of the venues most associ- ated with our early days – St. Elizabeth’s on the Auraria campus, and its reverberant acoustics – but where we have not performed in recent years due to an Archdiocesan proscription on charging for tickets at Roman Catholic churches. We are therefore asking for a “suggested donation” on Saturday, equaling the regular price of tickets, in the hopes that our audience will support us in the same way. At Sunday’s concert at Holy Cross Lutheran in Wheat Ridge, we will be selling tickets as usual. Compiled, as it is, of people’s favorites, this concert is sure to appeal to everybody, and I look forward to seeing you all there! + THE ST. Audience and Singer FavoritesBY TIMOTHY J. KRUEGER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

t the outset of our 20th Anniversary Season, ballots were distributed to the audience and singers at our first concerts in September. 30-some works, short and long, spanning the centuries, all of which St. Martin’s has per-

formed at some point in its history, were among those to be voted for by the recipients.

This concert is the result of those ballots, and could easily, there-fore, be titled “St. Martin’s Greatest Hits”!

We will begin with a few singer favorites – Stanford’s Beati quo-rum via, Lotti’s Crucifixus, and Terry Schlenker’s The Poem, the Song, the Picture. We then move on to the top vote-getters among audience members – “Never weather-beaten sail” from Parry’s “Songs of Farewell,” the Kyrie and Agnus Dei from the Byrd Mass for Four Voices, and the Biebl Ave Maria. THE ST MARTIN’S VOICE

St. Martin’s Singers Invited to Perform with Santa Fe Desert Chorale

The Santa Fe Desert Chorale, one of the na-tion’s leading professional ensembles special-izing in chamber choral music, will present the Mozart Requiem on August 7, 9 and 10 in Santa

Fe and Albuquerque, NM.Eight members of St. Martin’s Chamber Choir will join

the Desert Chorale for this monumental work, along with the Santa Fe Symphony and world-renowned mezzo-soprano Susan Graham. The conductor is Joshua Haberman, artistic director of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale and and director of the Dallas Symphony Chorus. Audiences will hear the Requiem performed by forces similar to Mozart’s original intentions.

These performances mark the first time St. Martin’s has performed outside the state of Colorado, and begin to fulfill a long-held dream to attain wider regional and national expo-sure. +

St. Martin’s at 20: Honoring Its Founder

Soon you should be receiving a letter asking you to remember and honor Timothy Krueger, St. Martin’s founder and artistic director, with a special gift to the Choir. Tim’s great vision in founding St. Martin’s has provided Denver and the region with twenty years of “combining seri-ous talent with intelligent program-ming” (The Denver Post), altering the Front Range choral scene for the better. Please consider making a special gift to St. Martin’s Chamber Choir to honor Tim! +

Sue Ieuter: Remembering a Former Board Member

Sue Ieuter, who served on the St. Martin’s Board from 2007 to 2009, died on February 17, 2014 in Boulder, at age 71. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on Sunday, March 23, at the Millennium Harvest House Hotel, 1345 28th St in Boulder.

Sue earned a BA and MA in education from the U. of Colorado Boulder. She taught English and reading at Platt Junior High, Boulder High and other local schools. She later worked in the banking industry as a fraud specialist. Sue was a tireless and en-ergetic board member of St. Martin’s Chamber Choir, and partici-pated enthusiastically in the marketing committee’s work. She was also an active supporter of the Colorado Music Festival. Other involvements included the Boulder Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union, Pi Beta Phi sorority, the CU Alumni Association and the Women Investing in the School of Education (WISE) at CU-Boulder.

She is survived by her husband Fritz of Boulder, daughter Hilde Kraiss and her husband Kevin of Irvine CA, daughter Toby Stauffer and her husband Jonathan of Steamboat Springs, two brothers and three grandchildren. In honor of Sue, please consider a contribution to St. Martin’s Chamber Choir, 2015 Glenarm Pl, Denver CO 80205.

Our “Audience and Singer Favorites” concerts on April 5 and 6 will be dedicated to Sue’s memory. +

An Easy Way to Give to St. Martin’s Chamber Choir

Sue and Fritz Ieuter both chose Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) as their means of making bi-monthly donations to St. Martin’s. Most donors who use EFT prefer a monthly funds transfer from their checking account or credit card; some prefer quarterly donations. It’s simple to set up, and having done so, your gifts to St. Martin’s automatically happen (through a secure third-party resource) with-out any additional work on your part. Most EFT donors find that regular donations allow them to give more than if they were writing a check from time to time. +

Juanita Kniss: A Legacy of GenerosityWe also remember

with great affection Juanita Kniss, wife of early Board member Robert Kniss, and along with her husband, a very generous donor to St. Martin’s Chamber Choir. Juanita died on November 18, 2013, just six weeks short of her 93rd birthday. Her legacy of generosity extends far beyond material giving.

A graduate of Akron University, where she was a Kappa Kappa Gamma, Juanita became a life-long teacher and student. She taught for 30 years at Merrill and Hill Junior High Schools and South High School in Denver. She made students love learning. She not only taught them academically, but also was extremely aware of their challenges of growing up. Many called and visited and sent cards long after she retired. Some credit her with saving their lives by being sensitive and non-judgmental and compassionate. She made a difference in so many lives.

Her wide-ranging involvements included the NEA, Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Native American College Fund, Planned Parenthood, and espe-cially Saint John’s Episcopal Cathedral. In all of her activities, she was always aware of people who seemed friendless or alone or not socially gregarious. That in itself was a form of generos-ity from which all of us could learn. +
