WCC 1ST xI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Will LeithThe 1st XI enjoyed an encouraging year, finishing in 4th place. It was a much changed side from 2015 with no less than 9 players making their debut for the side through the season. Much was expected of overseas player Kelly Smuts, but he returned to South Africa due to injury after just 4 games. His absence only brought the side closer together, and gave more opportunity to all players to show what they were capable of.

We started the season well winning 3 out of first 4 in the limited overs games. Only going down by 2 wickets to Reigate Priory. Kieran Bunting shone with the ball, picking up 7fer against Sutton and Oli Swann gave some much needed solidity at the top of the order with back to back 50’s.

Due to a combination of rain and some indifferent performances our season stuttered through the middle as we didn’t perform as consistently as we would have liked. Whilst dominating sides such as Guildford and Sutton we were unable to match our level of performance against Sunbury and Weybridge away.

Nick Welch announced himself into the 1st XI with a brutal 80* against Sutton, and Ryan Patel, at only 18, has fast become one of our most important players averaging over 50 with the bat and bowling at first change. The side will be much better off for them being available for the whole 2017 season,

They weren’t the only young players to make an impression in the 1st XI this year, Sam Dickson com-pleted an unprecedented feat when he made his debut becoming the first to represent the club at every level from U8 all the way up to the 1st XI. Youngsters, Niall Solomon and David Scott will both be looking to cement their place in the side after their breakthrough years, both grew in confidence towards the end of the season. These players, selected on merit, fully deserving the opportunity they got due to their performances in the 2nd XI over the last few seasons.

Another new player made a huge impact in the changing room and on the pitch this year, Robbie Gunn, he did the hard yards through the season. He was available every game, came in down the order and scored crucial runs at the back end of the innings and picked up important wickets. The experience of James Brown saw us over the line in a big run chase against Beddington and James Johnston was consistent with the ball, picking up 6fer in the same game.

We were lucky enough to have Surrey pro Mat Pillans play for us towards the back end of the year and he impressed everyone with his attitude and quality in the games he played, not least picking up 6fer in the final game against Normandy.

Nothing less than a title challenge is expected of the 1st XI next season. Having finished the season this year on a high with convincing wins against Weybridge and Normandy, it is now up to the play-ers to put in consistent performances over each game if we are going to close the gap on deserving winners Sunbury next season.

A big thanks to JB and his Panama for stepping in and scoring through the season after Barry Perry passed away shortly before the season started.

WCC 2ND xI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – David WillsThe 2016 season was generally a positive one for the 2nd XI and, despite finishing 4th as opposed to 2nd in 2015, it felt like significant progress was made. The team topped the table after the initial set of overs games and remained in title contention until well into August, finishing the season having lost the joint fewest games in the league.

It was the period in the middle of the season that really cost us a better shot at the title, going a period of 6 games without a win in the timed format (3 draws, 1 loss and 2 abandoned). The weather did not help our cause in this regard as two games in succession were washed out without a ball being bowled. Not only did this cost us the chance to earn vital points, but it also disrupted our momentum and meant that the players went three or four weeks without any cricket.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the season was the development of many of our academy players. Four of our U17/18 players came through the 2nd XI into 1st XI cricket and a total of 10 academy players represented the 2nd XI during the course of the season, playing a significant role in our success.

Everyone within the squad contributed at some stage of the season, but greater consistency (especially within the batting unit) will be needed to take the team to the next level. Two individual performances stand out in particular – Scott’s sublime 117* at Malden Wanderers from just 106 balls (our only century of the season scored by the 2nd youngest player in the squad) and Linley’s demolition of Epsom with 9/15 in 15.1 overs.

Skipper Wills topped the run scoring charts for the 2nd successive year with 400, while opening partner De Passos finished with the best average of 32.5 (among players to have played a meaningful number of innings). New club members Fisher, Kirkpatrick, Machado and Rose all finished with more than 200 runs for the season.

On the bowling front, the two outstanding performers were De Silva and Linley who finished with 26 and 23 wickets respectively, both with economy rates under 3 rpo. Urquhart, Brown and Solomon all reached double figures for the season as well.

2nd XI cricket has been played in a positive spirit and to a high standard in 2016, and Wimbledon should be in good shape to mount a title challenge next year.

WCC 3RD xI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Joe EddisonThe 3rd XI enjoyed a mostly dominant season based on the back of a strong bowling attack often fielding 6 or 7 bowlers that would be the envy of most 3rd XI’s. Ultimately the dominance only resulted in a 2nd place finish as Spencer showed the same dominance against the rest and deserved the win as they took advantage of two below par performances from Wimbledon to win the crucial games. Firstly a poor fielding display and then a batting collapse handed them the opportunities they jumped on to take the title.

The side had a strong backbone with seven players basically ever present but the inconsistency of availability meant that a further 30 players were used through the season. The batting was generally built around the skipper Eddison who finished 6th on the county run charts racking up over 800 runs and passing the 50 mark 8 times with 2 centuries. He was supported well by Eric Anand and Brad James with over 300 each and the innings of the season arguably Anands unbeaten century away at 17

Reigate. The side was never far from a collapse however and when they came they were dramatic and ultimately cost the side a final title push. A third centurion came in the final game of the season as Harry Thomas scored a dashing 115 at Malden, a great sign for the future from a member of the u17’s squad.

The bowling was consistent throughout in only conceding above 150 four times and never conceding 200. Carlton Anand spearheaded the attack superbly and effectively won games with his opening spells, getting his just rewards in the last third of the season to end with 26 wickets. Jamie Andrews showed consistency through the season to end with an impressive 28 wickets and an economy around 3 an over, often picking up crucial middle order wickets. They were supported by Eric Anand and Harry Houlder with 17 wickets each, and also by experienced Arthur Crocker, enthusiastic Oli Davis and pacey Will Whipple who picked up regular wickets when called upon.

There were a few nominations for game of the year, the best 2 performances were put in against Reigate where we were dominant from start to finish putting big totals up and then derailing chases with consistent strikes. We also had 2 nail biting finishes one where we came out on top against Ashtead chasing 111 getting home by 1 wicket after faltering to 45-8, Carlton Anand and Tahir Ahmad batting contrastingly to avert defeat. The best was in the ultimate title decider away at Spencer where a batting collapse saw us stutter to 150 and then a number of dropped catches saw the game over with Spencer 3 down and needing 13. Whipple and Carlton then ripped through them and only a French cut for 4 by number 11 saw Spencer limp home, a great game if not quite the result.

The season’s most valuable player has to be a battle to our twin all-rounders. Eric who scored over 300 at 30 and then 17 wickets at 8 is a fine display but Carlton pipped it through the consistency with the ball, the odd brilliance with the bat. It was his new ball bowling that won many again by creating the pressure for opponents to collapse.

If the squad can remain largely intact then the side should go one better next year with lots of talented youngsters coming through.

WCC ACADEMy CRICKET REPORT 2016Neal Harvey - Manager

2016 was a year of missed opportunity. Frustratingly, availability issues meant that we were never in a position to field our best teams, and our progress in all competitions suffered because of this.

However, the Under 17s started us off at half term with a fine victory over Ashtead in the U17 cup curtesy of two crushing innings, one from Ed Cooper(27,22 balls), and the other from Aran Veneik(19, 7 balls) , and a steady all round performance from skip Sam Dickson (50* and 2 for 13). Then on to Old Ruts in July, where another thumping innings from Ed, and another fine all round performance from Sam (50* and 2 for 26) gave us a one run victory. Our last cup game was against Spencer in the first week of August, which we lost comprehensively having posted 139 for 5 in 20 overs, (50 from Ed Cooper), Spencer hit them off in 17 overs.

The U17 league in August was a disaster, with very little availability from our U17, U16 and U15 cohorts. We did well against Hampton when our youngest player was actually 14, with an 83 from Harry Thomas and a hat trick from Ishaan Rajan who does not bowl often, but then with everyone

Page 10: 208 EC 655 EC 4515 EC WIMBLEDON CRICKET CLUB · Barry Dennis - President of Wimbledon CC A warm welcome from myself and all our officers and volunteers in our great club to all our

away, we had to concede our next match. We then ran into a strong Esher outfit, with a very young team. We suffered at the backend of their innings as they posted 223-6 in 30 overs, and with Harry going first ball struggled to 94ao in 18 overs, notable only for a top score of 26 from Will Harvey. We lost the playoff game with an even younger side. Our opening bats were Charlie Whipple and Tim Lloyd both 12 year olds, a precursor to what may be in future years. We did well to hold Malden Wanderers to 189 (28.3 overs). Umar Anis took 4 wickets, and George Whipple 2 for 0, but Harry, who batted through to be last out for 81, was on his own apart from a score of 23 from Tim, so we finished 34 runs short.

The Under 19s, were in good form in the ECB U19 T20 competition, winning 4 matches on the trot, but once again Spencer were our nemesis. We scraped a win against Malden Wanderers, despite our strong batting line up completely underperforming, thanks to David Scott’s 3 for 19. Batting was better against Old Ruts, with a 50 from Nick Welch, and two wickets for Harry Crocker snuffed out their response. In probably our best performance of the summer, we beat a good Sutton side by 8 wickets. 50 from David Scott and a late flourish from Victor Bakker saw us home chasing 126 in the nineteenth over. George Whipple took 3 for 5. In our final match against Spencer, it’s fair to say they batted brilliantly to put 188 on the board. Two crucial catches went begging, and our reply did not start well, Alex Combe out first ball. Good contributions from Ryan Patel (27, 16 balls) and Miguel Machado (39,22) kept us up to the rate and got us to a creditable, but not enough, 146 all out in 17 overs.

The U21s campaign in the Trust League, 40 overs, started badly, a loss to Spencer. We were pleased to be able to hold a strong batting line up to 207 all out. George Whipple took 3 for 36. Nick Welch, 59(55 balls) and Alex Kirkpatrick 46, got us up to the drinks break in contention, but we stumbled badly through the middle order, and only Ed Cooper’s 29, (26 balls), was of note after that, 170 all out. The Beddington game is famous for Miguel having to retire hurt when his helmet dug into the turf as he dived to make his ground. Collectively, we bowled well to hold Beddington to 180 all out, Sam Dickson taking 3 for 29. Alex Kirkpatrick led the way with 79 off 63 balls, his best knock of my season, a run a ball 31 from Miguel, and quick runs from the middle order meant we got home with 10 overs to spare. We were doing well against Old Whits, but we were taken for 80 runs off the last 10 overs of their innings (Nick Welch 2 overs for 31 runs) so they reached 230, and whilst there were several decent contributions, Welch 38, Rajan 34, Huxtable 31, we were not able to generate the scoring rate required, so finished on 190 from 40 overs. As it turned out, our next, against Dulwich, was our last game. They were struggling with their own availability, so our 188 batting first was not exceptional, Machado 60. But we picked up early wickets and Dipesh Patel took out the middle order (3 for 25), and we dismissed them for 120 in 33 overs.

Addiscombe conceded our next match, and the two losses meant that we did not advance from the group stage, so the U21 programme ended at the end of July, which was a shame for such an enthusiastic cohort.

Across three different age groups it is difficult to pick out one outstanding player, but Harry Thomas did well for the U17s scoring 198 runs, alongside Sam Dickson and Ed Cooper in the cup. Umar Anis (14) took 5 wickets. David Scott topped the averages for batting and bowling for the U19s. George Whipple, a 16 year old, took 5 wickets for the U21s and 11 across all age groups. Alex Kirkpatrick topped the batting for the U21s with 125 runs in his two innings. Miguel Machado

19

took 5 wickets for the U21s, and 2 for the U19s, and scored more runs for the U19s and U21s than anyone else, 209.

Whilst we sometimes did not do ourselves justice, we always played with a smile on our faces, and as a team.

I have noted the appreciation that the other captains have shown for the contributions of the academy players. Of the top ten run scorers for the club in 2016, 6 were 21 or younger. On six occasions in July and August, 20 or more academy boys played Saturday cricket. Over 50 played some senior cricket during the summer, an increase of 10 on last year.
