INTRODUCTION

Who is in the draw? The 2021 UEFA Nations League Finals feature the

winners of the four groups in League A:

Group 1: Italy

Group 2: Belgium

Group 3: France

Group 4: Spain

How does the draw work and when are the games? The draw will decide the two pairings for the

semi-finals, with no seeding or restrictions.

The final and the third-place match are scheduled

for Sunday 10 October 2021. One of the semi-final

ties will be drawn out to determine which provides

the ‘home’ team for either match (i.e. final and

third-place); this is done for administrative

purposes.

6 October: Semi-final 1

7 October: Semi-final 2

10 October: Match for third place

10 October: Final

Where are the Finals?Three associations with teams in Group A1 declared

an interest in hosting the tournament: Italy,

Netherlands and Poland. In principle, the winner of

this group (Italy) will be appointed as “Finals” hosts.

The formal appointment of the hosts will be

confirmed at the UEFA Executive Committee

meeting on 3 December, followed by the draw for

the semi-final and final pairings.

What is the “Finals” format? The semi-final winners advance to the final; defeated

teams contest the match for third place.

For the semi-finals and final, if scores are level at the

end of normal time then there is extra time.

If the scores are still level after the additional 30

minutes, it goes to a penalty shoot-out.

For the match for third place there is no extra time.

If the scores are level after the end of normal time, it

goes to a penalty shoot-out.

Is there a link between the 2021 UEFA Nations League Finals and the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign? In order to free up space in October 2021, the

four UEFA Nations League finalists will be drawn

into a five-team group for qualifying (rather than a

six-team group).

TROPHY

What does the winner get?

First and foremost, this fetching 71cm-tall sterling

silver trophy.

The UEFA Nations League trophy was revealed

on stage by UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin in

January 2018 just prior to the inaugural league phase

draw. It has been inspired by the UEFA Nations

League logo, a first for a UEFA competition.

The flag that represents all 55 UEFA national

associations competing within the promotion/

relegation format is elegantly wrapped around a flag

pole. The trophy is entirely made of sterling silver

that on the inside carries the competition colours.

The reflection of these colours on the silver surface

is one of the characteristics that make this

trophy unique.

“The first thing we wanted was for people to start

thinking what this trophy represented – the pinnacle

of a nation, the raising of a flag,” said Hélder

Pombinho, creative director of the brand agency

responsible for the trophy. “When we see this trophy

being raised, that’s what we imagine, as if we were

watching the flags of all the nations being raised, as

the high point of winning this tournament.”

POT ALLOCATION

Pot 1

The two match pairings A and B are determined as follows:

• The team drawn first is the home team of match pairing A.

• The team drawn second is the away team of match pairing A.

• The third team drawn is the home team of match pairing B.

• Pot 1 is emptied and the draw finished with the fourth team drawn being the away team of match

pairing B.

If the second and fourth team drawn is the host team, the relevant semi-final pairing is

switched around so that the host team is declared the home team.

The match pairing which includes the host team is considered to be semi-final 1, the other

match pairing is semi-final 2.

No seeding applies for the draw of the Finals.

COACH PROFILE

Roberto Mancini

Date of birth: 27 November 1964

Nationality: Italian

Playing career: Bologna, Sampdoria, Lazio, Leicester (loan)

Coaching career: Fiorentina, Lazio, Internazionale Milano (twice), Manchester City, Galatasaray, Zenit, Italy

• Spent the majority of his playing career in Italy, winning Serie A titles and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups with

both Sampdoria and Lazio as well as six editions of the Coppa Italia, four with Sampdoria and two with

Lazio. Capped 36 times by Italy, the forward was a bronze medallist at the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

• Started his coaching career as assistant to Sven-Göran Eriksson at Lazio before replacing Fatih Terim

at Fiorentina in 2001. After leading the Viola to the Coppa Italia, he returned to Lazio and repeated that

feat as well as steering the Roman club into the UEFA Champions League and to the UEFA Cup semi-

finals in 2002/03.

• Became coach of Inter in July 2004, replacing Alberto Zaccheroni one day after terminating his contract

with Lazio; led the Nerazzurri to Coppa Italia glory in his debut season, Inter’s first domestic honour since

the 1989 Scudetto. After Juventus were stripped of their 2005/06 title and AC Milan suffered a points

penalty, Inter were finally crowned champions of Italy again. Mancini repeated that success in 2006/07.

• Left Inter in May 2008 despite winning another title and replaced Mark Hughes as manager of

Manchester City midway through the 2009/10 Premier League season. City finished fifth in his first

campaign, third in his second – when they also lifted the FA Cup – and dramatically won the top flight for

the first time in 44 years on the final day of his third.

• City finished second the following season, but Mancini was sacked two days after losing to Wigan in

the 2013 FA Cup final. Mancini succeeded Terim again that September at Galatasaray, winning the 2014

Turkish Cup in what proved his only season; returned to Inter for two seasons from 2014 before joining

Russian club Zenit in 2017, stepping down the following year to take charge of Italy.

COACH PROFILE

Roberto Martínez

Date of birth: 13 July 1973

Nationality: Spanish

Playing career: Real Zaragoza, Balaguer, Wigan, Motherwell, Walsall, Swansea, Chester City

Coaching career: Swansea, Wigan, Everton, Belgium

• Born in Catalonia, Martínez started out with home-town club Balaguer before joining Zaragoza aged 16.

The bulk of his three years there were spent in the youth and B teams, with a solitary appearance for the

senior side before he returned to Balaguer in 1994, also running the club’s football school.

• Moved to England and Wigan in 1995, forming the ‘Three Amigos’ with fellow Spaniards Jesús Seba and

Isidro Díaz; over the next six years, helped the club win the third division title in 1997 and the Football

League trophy two years later. A year with both Motherwell and Walsall preceded a lengthier spell

at Swansea between 2003 and 2006, Martínez helping the club to promotion to the third tier. After

a season with Chester, he returned to south Wales in 2007, initially as player-manager before quickly

hanging up his boots.

• Guided Swansea to the League One championship in 2008 before leaving for Premier League Wigan the

following year. Inspired an unlikely escape from relegation in 2011/12 and landed the Latics’ first major

trophy with victory against Manchester City FC in the FA Cup final 12 months later – although three days

after that landmark triumph, Wigan were relegated.

• Martínez remained a man in demand and was appointed Everton manager in June 2013, steering the club

to fifth place with their record Premier League points tally in his first term. Everton reached the 2014/15

UEFA Europa League round of 16 and both domestic cup semi-finals in the next campaign, but indifferent

league form meant Martínez was dismissed in May 2016.

• Appointed Belgium coach three months later in the wake of Marc Wilmots’ departure and led the side to

the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Belgium ultimately finishing third in Russia – their

COACH PROFILE

Didier Deschamps

Date of birth: 15 October 1968

Nationality: French

Playing career: Nantes, Marseille (twice), Bordeaux, Juventus, Chelsea, Valencia

Coaching career: Monaco, Juventus, Marseille, France

• A product of Nantes’s highly rated youth system, Deschamps had success with Marseille as a defensive

midfielder, winning Ligue 1 in 1990 and 1992 and captaining them to UEFA Champions League glory in

1993. Signed for Juve in 1994 and won the UEFA Champions League again in 1996, adding three Serie A

titles, a Coppa Italia and a European/South American Cup.

• Left in 1999 for Chelsea, staying one season and lifting the FA Cup, before ending his career with a year

in Valencia, watching from the bench as they lost the 2001 UEFA Champions League final to Bayern

München. Skippered France to victory on home soil at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and also at UEFA EURO

2000, retiring that year with 103 caps.

• Started coaching career in 2001 with Monaco, landing the French League Cup in 2003 and reaching

the UEFA Champions League final a year later, going down to José Mourinho’s Porto. Resigned in

September 2005 and joined his old club Juventus, then in Serie B, the following June. Stepped down

after securing promotion back to Serie A in May 2007.

• Appointed Marseille boss in May 2009, replacing Eric Gerets. Ended OM’s 18-year wait for the Ligue 1

championship in his first term and added a maiden League Cup, retaining the latter trophy in the next

two campaigns.

• Succeeded Laurent Blanc after UEFA EURO 2012 and guided France to the 2014 World Cup, where

they lost to eventual winners Germany in the quarter-finals, and then to the final of UEFA EURO 2016 on

home soil only to lose to Portugal in extra time. Redemption followed at Russia 2018, where France went

all the way to lift the trophy, making Deschamps only the third man to win the World Cup as both player

and coach after Mário Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer.

COACH PROFILE

Luis Enrique

Date of birth: 8 May 1970

Nationality: Spanish

Playing career: Sporting Gijón, Real Madrid, Barcelona

Coaching career: Barcelona B, Roma, Celta Vigo, Barcelona, Spain

• Known for his versatility, Luis Enrique spent the bulk of his playing career with Spain’s two most

successful clubs having started out at home-town side Sporting Gijón.

• Won the Liga and Copa del Rey with Madrid and twice with Barcelona − whom he surprisingly joined on a

free transfer from the Merengues in 1996 − and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Super Cup at the

Camp Nou, where he played under, among others, Sir Bobby Robson, Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard.

• A scorer of 12 goals in 62 appearances for Spain and an Olympic gold medallist on home soil in 1992,

Enrique took up both endurance running and triathlon before moving into coaching with Barcelona B in

2008, succeeding his former Azulgrana team-mate Josep Guardiola.

• Appointed coach of Roma in June 2011 but held the post for just one season after a disappointing

campaign. Resurfaced at Celta in summer 2013, leading the Galician side to a ninth-place finish in the

Liga in his only season in charge.

• Left in May 2014 and was soon announced as Gerardo Martino’s replacement at Barcelona on a two-year

contract. After a challenging first half of the season, 16 wins from 19 league games in the second half

secured a Liga title, the Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League following as Luis Enrique emulated

Guardiola in winning the treble in his first season in charge, adding another league and cup double

in 2015/16.

• Stepped down in 2017 after another cup win, and appointed Spain coach the following July. Left the post

in March 2019 for personal reasons and was succeeded by his assistant Robert Moreno; reappointed that

November, the day after Spain’s successful UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying campaign had concluded.
