Parker Like most beagles, Parker follows his nose. “He is scent-driven,” said owner Mike Mimovich. “As a hound dog, his nose is his guiding light.” A happy pup, Parker filled his house with love from the moment he arrived. “We were going to try and go without a dog, but the house was more like a morgue. Mimovich said. “From the get go, we got him trained really well. We went to several different training sessions. He waits on command before he eats. He won’t start eating until he gets the OK. But he likes to beg and he’s always hungry. He has several types of barks depending on the circumstances and can make a lot of different noises.” He follows Cyndi Mimovich around, but he’s welcoming to everybody. “He’s a friendly happy pet,” Mike Mimovich said.

is a rescue organization thats mission is to recover, rehabilitate and permanently rehome New Mexico’s small companion dogs that find themselves living in shelters, unsuitable homes or navigating other harsh conditions.

The stories are ongoing and the needs never end. Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico was founded during the mid-1990’s by Marie Steele and Tamara Marquez-Nugent and granted its Federal 501C-3 status as a non-profit charitable organization in 2001. LDRNM is overseen today by Marie’s son, Brian Spence, President of LDRNM, and supported by dedicated volunteers from across the state. A small army of animal champions enables it to respond whenever the need arises and wherever it arises.

AlMOst HOME nEw MExiCOAlmost Home New Mexico is a nonprofit organization focused on helping make the world around us a better, happier place for pets. With the help of dedicated fosters and volunteers Almost Home New Mexico provides a second chance for hundreds of homeless and abandoned pets every year.

Monetary and volunteer help are needed. Almost Home New Mexico couldn’t accomplish its goals without the help of supporters. The organization can always use old blankets, toys, crates, dog food, treats and chews for the dogs in its care, and donation items that can be put in auctions it holds to raise money to keep the rescue going. Touchstone and Tesla were each rescue dogs and quickly touched Amanda Sayer’s heart. A funny fella, Touchstone got his name from the great bard himself. “I was in a Shakespeare play, ‘As You Like It,’ and I was the jester, Touchstone. She was playing around and really playful so I thought that would be a good name.” As for Tesla, “I like the scientist Nikola Tesla because of all the cool inventions he’s made. Well she was really smart with figuring things out so Tesla would be a good name for her.”

Karma may have had a rough start to her life, but her future is bright indeed. Because of a life-threatening infection in her front leg, it had to be amputated when she was a puppy. But Louise M. Nelson fell in love with her anyway. “She was in foster care when I adopted her last year at two. I saw her picture online, I just knew I wanted her. She’s a wonderful dog. She loves to run and play ball. She tries really hard to keep up with other dogs. She tries to keep them all herded and together.”

Stella’s not blue since Vicki Hontas picked her up from the Albuquerque animal shelter two years ago. “She was the only one in there in all those cages that came forward wagging her tail,” Hontas said. “She was friendly and showing the love to us right off the bat.” Stella has undergone quite a bit of training with the ultimate goal to make her a service dog. “She’s very even tempered, very loving. It’s hard to come up with enough adjectives about how sweet she is. If I’m sitting she’s sitting next to me with her head in my lap. She’s just a little lover girl.”

Spanky made an immediate impression when Mary L. Schmauss visited the Albuquerque animal shelter. “I just really like that all her colors were all mixed up,” she said. “And she really had a lot of personality, made good eye contact.” Although Spanky does enjoy playing with her toy mice, she also enjoys chewing cotton, like clothes. “I can’t leave any clothes out, she chews holes in them,” Schmauss said. “And sheets too. While I’m sleeping, I’ve noticed, a little hole in my pajamas. In my sleep, she’s gotten under the covers. She’s a little rascal that way.”

As a Skye terrier, Gaven comes from an old and rare breed known for unfailing loyalty. And Gaven’s loyalty is firm attached to Arthur Cochrane, said his wife, Glory Cochrane. “He’s my husband’s BFF,” she said. “My husband has brain cancer and he sticks really close to my husband. He’s his personal caretaker. Brain cancer is essentially terminal and (Gaven) senses that and sticks with him. He sits with him in his chair and makes sure he’s OK at night.”

One cold December night when Boni Galarneau was working late at the Rio Rancho Animal Shelter, somebody dropped off a crate that she thought had a cat in it. It turned out to be a Rudy, a small, older dog with chemical-like burns on his back. “If I hadn’t been there, he could have been there all night,” she said. Galarneau took him home and nursed him back to health and eventually trained him as a therapy dog. “He’s got a super temperament”, she said. “He doesn’t bark at anybody. We take him to be with toddlers at Barnes and Noble and he sits on their lap. He’s the perfect size for anybody in nursing homes and they love him.”

Buster was rescued from a shelter in Truth or Consequences, where his days were numbered. Although abused as a young pup, Buster has proven to be a joy. “He was very skittish at first, then he began to trust us and he gives the best cuddles,” Christa Keohane said. “He’s an 85-pound lap dog.” Buster usually has a pretty full day. “He’s lazy but he loves to chase his lizards, eat treats and lay in the sun.”

If nothing else, Moses is a survivor. Found in an irrigation ditch with his siblings, there wasn’t much to him. “I think it was their story,” owner Frances Flores said of why she brought Moses and his sister home. “They had just come up for adoption and they looked like two little white puffs. They looked like two cotton balls.” Moses, however, once escaped the kitty coop that sat on Flores’ 10th-story balcony and fell off. “He survived and he’s done remarkably well,” she said. “No broken bones. We’ve determined he’s exhausted his nine lives.”
