Easter Vigil homily
Catholic NAGOYA Diocese
Bishop Michael Matsuura Goro
Congratulations to all of us, as Christ has resurrected ! In the last three days - called
Holy Triduum, we have journey through the Passion of Our Lord and now we are facing His
Resurrection.
The Gospel reading today is from Matthew, but I will also use details from other Gospels in
my reflection with you. All four Gospel retold the resurrection of Jesus, for it is the very
center of our faith. However, there are differences in details - for example the number of women
coming to the tomb, when and how the stone is rolled aside, and the way Jesus encountered the
women. But we don't really need to ascertain which version is the most precise - since the
central concern of the evangelists were to convey the same message, 'We have met Jesus - He who
had been crucified but now has resurrected and is living', not exactly how that happened! In the
case of Matthew, he saw Jesus as the One who realized Old Testament's prophecies, so he used
many expressions and images from that.
The empty tomb is essential to the narrative. The tomb had been covered outside by a huge
stone. Inside is all darkness, where human power has absolutely no use, and the stone outside
means "Hope ends here." The women will never be able to move it away.
What happened inside the tomb? Jesus has resurrected, with the rolled away stone and the
empty tomb as signs. Instead of being the locked door of hopelessness, the empty tomb has turned
to be a 'threshold of mystery' surpassing human comprehension. Perhaps that's why when the
disciple came, he had to stop, to stoop and look inside before entering. One can not touch the
Mystery without bowing down first. Human reason alone would not be able to grasp the Death and
Resurrection of Jesus.
For the disciples, the death of Jesus itself was the darkness that engulf them. But now, in
the threshold of mystery, we meet the Resurrected. That meaning is signified in our liturgy by
the lighting of the Resurrection Candle - the Candle that chased out darkness.
Then, what happened in the disciples' life after their encounter with the Resurrected Lord?
Of course, that brought them a great joy - but more importantly, they began to understand what
Jesus had said, had done before the Passion. They came to know what He meant. Before, they had
heard a lot from Him, but they never got what He meant when He foretold His death and resurrection
- that's why they all ran away when Jesus was arrested. Only after the Resurrection, they could
recall and came to comprehend the whole thing.
In tonight Liturgy, we read again parts of the Old Testament by the lìght of the Resurrection
Candle. For the Resurrection shed light on the Old Testament, in which our history of salvation
is revealed.
The same thing can be said about Baptism. Tonight, many people all
over the world are receiving the sacrament. Through Baptism, we are
granted new life as Children of God, but what really changed in our life
with it ? Sometimes we wonder, because it seems nothing really changes
- we are still ourselves with all our humanity, our will and our flaws.
But what really changed is the meaning of our life. Life is a series of
events, but if we don't know where would it go and what it means, it is
just 'one damn thing after another'. But Faith makes us rediscover it,
and helps us to understand the meaning of it in relation with God.
Today, let us stand in front of the empty tomb, liberated from the
night's darkness - to encounter the Living God. Everthing starts again
from there.

A vigília pascal
Bispo de Nagoya
Michael Matsuura Goro
Prezados irmãos e irmãs, Feliz Páscoa! Nestes últimos três dias caminhamos juntos
celebrando o Mistério Pascal, a paixão, a morte e a ressurreição do Senhor.
A verdadeira
do desespero.
redescobrimos a vida verdadeira.Vamos sair do túmulo vazio para
