2020 TERM 2 WEEK 6 Dear North Fremantle Community, It is wonderful to be able to engage our students in some familiar activities. All of our playgrounds are once again available for the children to use at school during the day and Edu-Dance lessons are in full swing. Last week all classes enjoyed participating in the annual National Simultaneous Storytime with the aim of promoting the value of literacy and reading. It was tremendous to see how all classes engaged with the story reading and associated activities; with older students writing their own books and creating games to read and play with younger students. SEMESTER ONE REPORTS Due to the disruption of learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, reporting in Semester 1 will look different. Under new guidance from the Director General of Education, Lisa Rodgers, schools are not required to report learning area grades for Semester 1 2020. Reports will still be sent out with teachers providing a comment about the course content that has been delivered in each learning area. The usual attitude, behaviour and effort attributes will also be completed along with a general overall comment. Student Achievement Reports for Semester One will be available via Connect in the final week of term. COVID-19 UPDATE Thank you for the outstanding support from our parents and carers in making the special measures we have put in place at drop-off and pick-up times work during the height of COVID-19. Staff and many parents have been noting how successful this has been and the increased level of independence and confidence displayed by students, which is fantastic. Students arrive at their classroom more settled and ready for the day ahead. In line with the latest Health advice, the WA Government announced that from Monday, 8 June: “Parents and carers will be permitted to enter school grounds to drop off or pick up children. This is still limited to a maximum of 100 people with physical distancing of one person per 2 square metres and good hygiene practices to be applied.” To be able to adhere with these requirements and follow the Operational Guidelines for Government Schools, the school has determined that we will need to continue the current procedures for drop-off and pick-up of children at the gates on Turton Road. Should you need to make arrangements to speak to the class teacher or attend the Front Office, please make an appointment via email or phone. This will also assist the school in maintaining our additional health and hygiene practices to keep all members of our school community safe at school. 2020 TERM 2 WEEK 6

Dear North Fremantle Community,

It is wonderful to be able to engage our students in some familiar activities.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE Unless a child is unwell, it is important for children to attend school all day, every day. Why is going to school so important? • At school, many concepts such as literacy and numeracy are taught in a sequence. Missing school means missing out on learning – which can often make it difficult to catch up later. This is particularly important in the early years when essential foundation skills are being taught. • Going to school every day helps children learn the important life skill of ‘showing up’ – at school, at work, to sport and other commitments. • Research from the Western Australian Telethon Kids Institute shows that every day at school counts towards a student’s learning. Students who attend regularly, generally do better at school and in life.

NOTIFYING THE SCHOOL- ABSENCES Another big thank you to parents and carers for continuing to keep children home from school if they are unwell, or picking children up promptly if the school has advised that they have become unwell during the day. Please call or email the school or use Connect to notify the school if there is an illness.

KINDERGARTEN 2021 We have begun accepting Kindergarten enrolments for 2021. If you are a parent, or know of a parent, with a child who is turning 4 years of age before 30 June 2021 (born between July 1 2016 and June 30 2017), please be aware that they are eligible to attend Kindergarten in 2021 Application for Enrolment forms can be obtained from our school’s website https://www.northfremantleps.wa.edu.au/

or by emailing the school. When submitting your Kindergarten application, you will need to present your child’s birth certificate, any visa documentation and a copy of their AIR (Australian Immunisation Register) History Statement. You can obtain a copy by phoning AIR on 1800 653 809, emailing [email protected], or from Medicare. We also require proof of your residential address. Please enrol your child as soon as you can. Applications close on 24 July 2020 (the first Friday of Term 3). Unfortunately, we will not be able to run our scheduled ‘Play and Learn’ mornings this term but hope that we will be able to host these special opportunities to meet with future students and their families later in the year.

In newsletters throughout the year, classes have the opportunity to share their educational journey with the school community. In this fortnight’s edition of the newsletter we will shine the spotlight on Room 2. So, read on to find out what Mrs Knowles and our amazing Pre Primary students have been learning at school this year.

We wish Mrs Chandler a speedy recovery and expect her to return to school shortly.

Thank you for your ongoing support of North Fremantle Primary School.

SPOTLIGHT ON . . . Room 2

Room 2 Mrs Knowles

In Pre Primary this term the children have adapted well to the routine of saying goodbye to their mums and dads at the gate and heading to class for their day of learning. It is so wonderful to see how independent the children are and how they set about each morning making sure they are ready for the day to begin. In Literacy this term we have been consolidating our Phase Two Letters and Sounds program and have been trying hard to sound out and read some simple words. We have been taking our reading folders home and some sight words to practise three days a week to support our classroom learning program.

Last Wednesday we enjoyed listening to and watching Emma Watkins from the Wiggles read to us the story of Whitney and Britney, Chicken Divas. This was the National Simultaneous Storytime book for 2020. We made our own chickens and decorated them just like they were in the story book. In Maths we have read Rosie’s Walk and focused on positional language skills. We made a story map and labelled it to show how Rosie made her way around the farm, unaware she was being followed by the fox! We have also focused on ordering numbers and working out what comes before and after a number to ten. We have also been trying to remember which is our left and right hands, and on Friday we made a bracelet to fit our right hand to help us remember. In Science we are looking at the weather. We were asked to predict what we thought the weather was like last Friday. Most of us were spot on predicting rain and the wind, and with the help of Mrs Bruno we made some very bright and colourful rainbow wind catchers. In HASS we have been talking about where our families come from. We looked at a map and a globe of the world and were excited to talk about and find what countries are special to us. We have also enjoyed watching and singing along to the song, “Where Am I From?” which is part of the Inquisitive Program which supports out History and Geography lessons. The children have also been busy making houses out of pop sticks and talking about where they live, their address and what number they have on their letterbox. Lastly, one of the biggest highlights of the term has been meeting Miss Jenna in the undercover area to participate in our Edu-Dance lesson each week. We eagerly head down to find out what dance moves we need to learn and have a great time exercising and dancing to different songs. Who knew fitness could be so much fun!
