This is one of the scriptural references for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (also called Penance or Confession). Jesus wanted us to have a way to be close to God again when we make a bad choice that hurts him, others, or even ourselves.


In ChurchAs a family, go to your parish and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Check your bulletin for the times your church offers the sacrament.

About the GospelSunday is a very special feast day: we celebrate the gift of the Eucharist! Jesus tells us he will give us his Body to eat and his Blood to drink under the appearances of bread and wine. It is difficult to understand, but during the priest’s words of consecration, the bread and wine becomes the Body and Blood of Jesus!


In ChurchListen carefully to the words the priest says when he consecrates the bread and wine. As he elevates the host, remember it is now Jesus you are looking at—and he is looking at you, too!

Question of the WeekWhy do you think Jesus gave us the Eucharist?

Family PrayerLord, help us to believe the truths the Church teaches us, even when they are hard to understand. Amen.

About the GospelThe first part of Sunday’s Gospel sounds confusing; we are supposed to love Jesus more than our parents and our children. When we remember that our families are gifts from God, it makes sense! God gave our families to us because he knew they would make us happy. He is the giver of every good gift.


In ChurchIf someone compliments you, find a way to give the glory to God. (For example, “Your hair looks so pretty today.” You might respond, “I’m grateful God gave me a mom who is so good at styling it”).

Question of the WeekHow can you remember to give God thanks for your family?

In ChurchSay a prayer before Mass for your heart to be open to the Word of God. Think of this again when we make a sign of the cross over our mind, lips, and heart before the Gospel reading.

Question of the WeekHow do you till your spiritual soil (making your family a place where strong faith can flourish)?

Family PrayerJesus, help our family to be a place where faith flourishes in our own hearts and in the hearts of those who visit us. Amen.

Question of the WeekThe goal of family life is to help each other get to Heaven. How can you help your family get to Heaven?

About the GospelSunday’s Gospel is often misunderstood. Jesus is not saying the woman is a dog; he is trying to explain that she is not a person who was raised in faith and yet she shows great faith. To some, she was invisible. The woman is persistent and faithful; two things we are reminded to be.

Jesús no dice que la mujer es un perro, sino que está tratando de decir que no es una persona educada en la fe y que, aún así, muestra una gran fe. Para algunos, ella era invisible. La mujer persiste y tiene fe, dos cosas que debemos hacer nosotros también.

About the GospelIn Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tries to explain that he will die and rise again three days later. This frightens the Apostles; Peter doesn’t want Jesus to say these things. Jesus (who just gave Peter authority in the Church) scolds Peter for his lack of trust. Even someone as important as Peter needs correction at times.

About the GospelIt is not always easy to forgive someone who hurts you. Jesus tells us that we must forgive, just as God the Father forgives us. When we hurt someone, we should ask for forgiveness right away. When someone asks for our forgiveness, we should not answer, “It’s okay,” but rather say, “I forgive you.”
