About the GospelJesus tells us he is the way, the truth, and the life; if you have seen Jesus you have also seen the Father. Sunday’s Gospel points toward Heaven. Jesus gives us a roadmap to follow and reminds us that with the Holy Trinity, he and the Father are one.

Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture.

In ChurchWatch the priest during Mass. Think about how he reminds you of Jesus in his words, actions, and perhaps even his vestments (priest’s clothes).

Question of the WeekWhat are some ways you can follow Jesus?

Family PrayerJesus, help us to reflect your love to others so they may see the path to Heaven through you. Amen.

About the GospelSunday is a very special feast day: we celebrate the gift of the Eucharist! Jesus tells us he will give us his Body to eat and his Blood to drink under the appearances of bread and wine. It is difficult to understand, but during the priest’s words of consecration, the bread and wine becomes the Body and Blood of Jesus!

Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture.

In ChurchListen carefully to the words the priest says when he consecrates the bread and wine. As he elevates the host, remember it is now Jesus you are looking at—and he is looking at you, too!

Question of the WeekWhy do you think Jesus gave us the Eucharist?

Family PrayerLord, help us to believe the truths the Church teaches us, even when they are hard to understand. Amen.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time • June 21, 2020Sunday Readings: Jeremiah 20:10-13; Romans 5:12-15; Matthew 10:26-33

About the GospelSunday’s Gospel has two main messages: Do not be afraid, and tell others you love Jesus. God made us, and he knows how to take care of us. This makes us happy and secure. We want everyone to be happy knowing that God loves them, so we should boldly tell others about Jesus.

Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time • June 28, 2020Sunday Readings: 2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a; Romans 6:3-4, 8-11; Matthew 10:37-42

About the GospelThe first part of Sunday’s Gospel sounds confusing; we are supposed to love Jesus more than our parents and our children. When we remember that our families are gifts from God, it makes sense! God gave our families to us because he knew they would make us happy. He is the giver of every good gift.

Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture.

In ChurchIf someone compliments you, find a way to give the glory to God. (For example, “Your hair looks so pretty today.” You might respond, “I’m grateful God gave me a mom who is so good at styling it”).

Question of the WeekHow can you remember to give God thanks for your family?

Family PrayerGod, thank you for giving our family the gift of one another. Help us to remember that you give us every good thing! Amen.

About the GospelJesus reminds us that when we trust him, things will be easier. He compares us to oxen being yoked together. Old oxen are yoked with young ones to teach them how to and avoid pitfalls and injury. When we trust Jesus, he will teach us the way to go.

Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture.

In ChurchThe sacraments are the roadmap Jesus gives us to Heaven. Pick one of the Seven Sacraments and find a symbol of it in your church (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, Marriage).

Question of the WeekWho in your life is an example of holiness and why?

Family PrayerDear Jesus, help us to be patient with each other as we try to learn new things. Amen.

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time • July 12, 2020Sunday Readings: Isaiah 55:10-11; Romans 8:18-23; Matthew 13:1-23 or 13:1-9

About the GospelJesus uses stories to tell us things about faith and about ourselves. In Sunday’s Gospel, he challenges us to grow in faith. This Gospel is wonderful for families, because parents are responsible for “tilling the soil” for their children to grow strong in faith.

Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture.

In ChurchSay a prayer before Mass for your heart to be open to the Word of God. Think of this again when we make a sign of the cross over our mind, lips, and heart before the Gospel reading.

Question of the WeekHow do you till your spiritual soil (making your family a place where strong faith can flourish)?

Family PrayerJesus, help our family to be a place where faith flourishes in our own hearts and in the hearts of those who visit us. Amen.

About the GospelMustard seeds are very tiny. In Sunday’s Gospel, we are reminded that God can take any small amount of faith and help it to grow.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time • August 16, 2020Sunday Readings: Isaiah 56:1, 6-7; Romans 11:13-15, 29-32; Matthew 15:21-28

About the GospelSunday’s Gospel is often misunderstood. Jesus is not saying the woman is a dog; he is trying to explain that she is not a person who was raised in faith and yet she shows great faith. To some, she was invisible. The woman is persistent and faithful; two things we are reminded to be.

Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture.

In ChurchLook around the church and find someone you have never noticed before. Say hello, smile, or offer a prayer for that person.

Question of the WeekWho is invisible (ignored) to you and why do you choose not to notice them?

Family PrayerJesus, sometimes it can feel as though you cannot hear us. Help us to keep asking for help and to be patient, waiting with trust, knowing you will answer our prayers at the right time. Amen.

¿A quién ignoras?

Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time • August 23, 2020Sunday Readings: Isaiah 22:19-23; Romans 11:33-36; Matthew 16:13-20

About the GospelSunday’s Gospel is very important to Catholics because it describes when Jesus gave his Church the papacy (pope). Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter and gave Peter the ability to bind or forgive sins (the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation).

Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture.

In ChurchThink about how the Sacrament of Penance helps us draw close to Jesus.

Question of the WeekWhy do you think the Sacrament of Penance is a gift Jesus gave us?

Family PrayerJesus, help us to always run toward you and change anything that keeps us from you. Amen.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time • August 30, 2020Sunday Readings: Jeremiah 20:7-9; Romans 12:1-2; Matthew 16:21-27

About the GospelIn Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tries to explain that he will die and rise again three days later. This frightens the Apostles; Peter doesn’t want Jesus to say these things. Jesus (who just gave Peter authority in the Church) scolds Peter for his lack of trust. Even someone as important as Peter needs correction at times.

Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture.

In ChurchRepeat the Divine Mercy prayer (see if your church has a Divine Mercy image). “Jesus, I trust in you.”

Question of the WeekHow does God use others to correct you or teach you?

Family PrayerJesus, you always know the right path for us. Help us to trust that you will help us find our way. Amen.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time • September 13, 2020Sunday Readings: Isaiah 55:6-9; Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a; Matthew 20:1-16a

About the GospelIt is not always easy to forgive someone who hurts you. Jesus tells us that we must forgive, just as God the Father forgives us. When we hurt someone, we should ask for forgiveness right away. When someone asks for our forgiveness, we should not answer, “It’s okay,” but rather say, “I forgive you.”

Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture.

In ChurchListen for the prayer that asks us to forgive as we are forgiven by God.

Question of the WeekWhy is it better to say, “I forgive you,” than, “It’s okay,” when someone asks for forgiveness?

Family PrayerHelp us Lord, to offer and ask for forgiveness when we have hurt each other. Amen.
