So, in brief, this is what we hope will now occur:

• ClubswillhaveimmediateaccesstoMCMSuponregistration and sign up into the system. We hope they will welcome this new technology for the benefit of you, their members.

• From1January2021,theresultsofeverycompetition conducted by every club using the MCMS system will commence to be processed through the new grading / handicapping algorithm.

• Overthefollowing6months,MCMSwillworkclosely with a Rules Supervisor’s Panel to review the algorithm’s performance and fine tune it’s settings in order to ensure it identifies a grade and handicap that is reflective of a shooters ability.

• MembersHandicapbookgradeswillcontinuetobethe“officialgrade/handicap”duringthe2021year and as such Members will be required to continuetobringtheirhandicapbookswiththemto all shoots (as they currently do) and the club handicapper will need to continue to perform the current grading and handicapping process within thosebooks.

• Inthemiddleoftheyear, theRulesSupervisorsPanel will formally meet to review and hopefully approve the automated process. Should this occur theplanistogatheranadditional6monthsofscore data to maximise the appropriateness of the calculated grades and handicaps ahead of a full switchovertotheautomatedprocesson1January2022.

We hope that all clubs will enthusiastically embrace MCMS and assist the ACTA to offer better membership services by way of improving competition services moving forward. The ACTA will be using MCMS as its shoot program at ACTA National Eventsin2021,includingtheMCMSnominationprocess. We anticipate that this will deliver a seamless and user-friendly experience for all participants.

2020 south australian issf titles 23rd, 24th & 25th OctOber 2020

STaTE CHaMPIOnSHIPS International Clay Target Club

In a year that most of us would prefer to put behind us, restrictions due to the pandemic have been eased enough here in South Australia for us to be fortunate enough to hold our State Carnival for ISSF. Without dwelling too much on the events that have caused us all sorts of grief around the country for the past 9 or 10 months, we are all here again to compete for the 2020 titles – albeit without many of our interstate friends and counterparts.

On the Thursday, we saw a small contingent of competitors that had come through to shoot an event that our host club, International CTC, had put on as a pre-Carnival cursor to familiarise everyone with conditions and background etc.

Immediately after, the grounds were opened up

for practice, and a few shooters took advantage of this to prep their skills for the 3 days of competition.

Leading up to our competition dates of October 23, 24 and 25, we saw unseasonal weather conditions. Some rather hot days mixed in with

Page 9: 2020 South Au StrAliAn iSSF titl ES Monarto – remembrance ...Port Augusta Birthday Shoot 28 Coaching News 31 Waratah News 32 Vale 34 Break Badges 34 Psychological Skills for Shooting

some heavy rain days, with flooding in some areas. And these 3 days were going to be no exception with our practice day being a balmy 29 degrees and very, very grey and overcast (maybe a sign of things to come).

The first day started at around 19 degrees for the morning and with very still air. However, the day

was certainly going to change a little later. Only a limited number of participants came to the ticket window to contest the first event, the State Mixed Pairs title, due to the inability for interstate travellers to make it here this year. Held only for the second time here in South Australia, a good

mix of shooters (3 squads) came through to try their skills. Targets were being checked in the early morning for distances, heights, speeds and angles. Although a challenging first set of 75 with lots of low, fast and wide targets, no one could wish for better targets in such still conditions, with great visibility in front of the traps. The weather gods were going to be kind to us this morning with the predicted forecast rain on its way for later in the morning.

As everyone wandered around the grounds seeing who they were up against, there was an atmosphere of anticipation. Office staff was well catered for with lollies in the bowls for keeping the energy levels up. At 9am everyone was called out to the layout to see the targets. Everything looked fine, and the game got underway.

Steadily but determined they all got through their rounds. Only 1 layout was used which had a rain cover, in anticipation of the wet weather which was on its way. Competitors were coming in, in between the rounds to check the progressive scores and see how they had faired up, and there were smiles as well as sad faces to be had. As we started going through the second round, a few drops of rain started hitting the verandahs at our State Shooting Park, but the targets were still flying nicely.

When all the numbers had been calculated at the end, the shoot-offs got underway: 25 targets of Single Barrel for each competitor to determine the winners of the sought after State red sashes. The top 4 pairs went out to face

it off – Garry Coppola and Lisa Smith against Darren Beyer and Leah Ferguson for the Bronze medal match. The Bronze medal winners were

Garry Coppola and Lisa Smith 119 + 30. By this time the predicted showers had passed us by. The Gold medal match then got underway with Sam Daou and Beth Hayden against George K and Deserie Baynes. When all had gone quiet the Silver medal went to Sam & Beth 120 + 29, and the Gold was won by George and Deserie, 120 + 37 taking out the State red sashes and the State title. Congratulations to Deserie shooting a 25/25 single barrel in the final.

Presentations got under way nice and early at 1.30pm which gave everyone a chance to have

a relaxing afternoon and some well earned R & R before the games begin again tomorrow. Congratulations to the winning participants. While the competitors had gone, all the officials were hustling over the trap layouts with their protractors, height sticks, angle and distance markers etc. to get everything right for the morning. A few people stayed behind to get some much needed practice in.

A special word of thanks must be given to the guys who give so generously of their time every day over the Carnival, year after year, to be at the grounds at the crack of dawn to get it all right so that the competitors can have a trouble free competition – our Patron, Kelvyn Prescott, Deserie Baynes, Tania and Bronte Evans, Noel West and Guy Yoannidis – it’s a pretty thankless task, but we would like to acknowledge your efforts – thank you all so very much.

So today, Saturday, the commencement of the qualifying 125 target singles rounds of which the first 75 targets would be shot today and would determine our SA Postal Team. Seven squads came in this year for Trap. At the Skeet end, everything was also checked and double checked as the rules tell us. Considering the circumstances with the COVID situation, 2 squads still came out for the Skeet. The participants were called to the traps to check all the targets before they all headed out to undertake the task. Once again the forecast was for blustery conditions and only 14 degrees, which made for an awesome day with targets bouncing and being wind effected. Scores on the board certainly reflected the conditions with some being absolute train wrecks, and hopes of being in the winner’s circle being dashed.

At the end of the day, there were lots of smiles and lots of sad faces again as the scores came in and were tallied. At 2.30 pm everything was over and everyone started making their way to the bars and hotels for some well earned rest and to get refreshed for the last 50 targets of the qualifier before the real work starts tomorrow in the finals. Squad sheets were redrawn and rotated ready for a start on time.

Sunday morning saw a change in the weather, with milder breezes and cloudy conditions. As the

first wave headed out at 9am, everyone started contemplating where they were going to end up. Competitors went out and did whatever they had to do to stay in the running for the State titles that were on offer for the select few that could manage their way through the changing conditions.

The last 50 targets were shot and calculations were being done in the office. A lot of head shaking was happening around the grounds and competitors were thinking – what could have gone so tragically wrong – as the changing light conditions had taken their toll on the already average scores of the day before, however, it was a level playing field for everyone. A few however, managed to push through and come in with a decent score.

The numbers were tallied, the bib positions allocated, and the top 6 scores went out to face it off. The Womens final was Molly Bretag, Lisa Smith, Deserie Baynes, Leah Ferguson, Deb McPherson and Anna Evgenuiou. The Mens final was Eric Parletta, Bronte Evans, Ross Walsh, George Kontopolous, Rhys Fischer and Darren Beyer.

Ladies Final was conducted, all shot single barrel under the new shoot-off conditions and after the first 25 targets, the first to leave the group was Leah. Shooters now do a further 3 sets of 5 targets at a time with another competitor dropping off each set of 5. Deb was the next one out, followed by Anna then Molly. The next 10 targets determine the Gold & Silver winners between Deserie and Lisa. Coming out victor after those 10 targets (and picking up the

Men’s final got started and the first to leave was George. Next were Rhys, then Bronte. Ross Walsh picked up the Bronze. The Gold & Silver match finished tied and went on to sudden death between Eric Parletta and Darren Beyer. Eventually Eric came out victor to the huge cheers of his family and friends. Well done to both these guys and congratulations to Eric on the Gold medal and Darren with Silver.

Meanwhile, down at the Skeet end, it was Doyle Yoannidis, Steve Day, Nick Dimasi, Damien Yon, Jim Hallyday and Vince Dimasi on the battlefield for the Mens finals. Womens final was between sisters Chelsea and Bridgette McKinnon.

shoot-offs was Bridgette McKinnon C grade 93/125. Bridgette also picked up the Ladies as well and became the Skeet SA Champion shooter – a huge effort on the day. Steven Day was 2nd in C 81/125 as well as highest scoring Veteran. Doyle Yoannidis won the Mens final and the Gold, as well as the SA Junior Champion shooter. Well done to both Bridgette and Doyle!!

Doyle was again the recipient of the Yoannidis Perpetual shield presented by his father Guy. Congratulations to all that took home some honours.

A shout out must go again this year to Guy Yoannidis who, always single handedly runs the complete operations of the Skeet titles for the duration of the Carnival. Thank you Guy – it’s like you operate in ‘stealth’ mode

Here in South Australia we also have this event graded and like to reward the participants for their efforts in grade.

When it was all put together, it looked like this: In Trench, C grade winner was Pino Marmorale 95/125, and Rito Borzillo 2nd with 84/125. B grade went to Molly Bretag 106/125, with Rhys Fischer 2nd on 99/125. A grade was taken by Ross Walsh 102/126, with 2nd being George K 101/126. AA grade winner was Bronte Evans 103/125, and

2nd Craig Bentley 97. What a huge effort considering the changing conditions of the day. Our SA Champion shooter for trap was Molly Bretag who was also the recipient of the SA Junior Champion. down at your end – we don’t see you, but it just all happens.

After all was said and done, another successful Carnival, albeit somewhat confusing weather conditions for the 3 days. We sadly missed a lot of our friends coming across from interstate due to the conditions of the preceding 9 months and we hope that you and your families are all well through these times that we’ve all had to endure. A very big thank you also to Joe from Melisi Projects, Marsh Insurance and Martin from Collumbo Shooting for your continuing support and contributions to prizes and sponsorship. Special thanks also to our host Club (ICTC) State Shooting Park Committee that do an exemplary job at keeping our grounds in pristine condition.

On a last note, thanks to all the shooters that participated and travelled to compete and helped make it a great weekend.

On behalf of the State Board, we hope to see you all again in 2021 and hopefully with the inclusion of our interstate counterparts. Thank you all.

Mules family Memorial14th & 15th november 2020

From near and far clay target shooters travelled to compete at Monarto for what has become one of our bigger ‘full-weekend’ competitions of the year: the Mules Family Memorial and shooting for the Iraq-Afghanistan War Remembrance Cup.

Typical Spring-weather of four seasons in a day and all over the place, was on show in the week leading up to the shoot but a forecast of near perfect weather had us excited for the weekend.

Saturday, 14th November dawned to a day full of promise. The car park soon filled and some campers had already set up house amongst the trees.

Fifty-one competitors vied for the overall trophy of an $800 air rifle on the Mules Family Memorial 100 mixed target event, 25 target DB, 25 target SB, 25 target PS and 25 target HC.

One by one the score sheets came into the office and throughout the event 23 possible scores were shot through the four different rounds but the overall winner was AA grade shooter Craig Bentley (Port Augusta) who had shot three perfect founds of 25/25 in his DB, SB and Handicap, where he shoots from 25 metres, and he had only dropped one point by pulling a second barrel in the Points Score round. His final score was a 149/150.

At the end of competition, the results were as follows:

Overall and AA grade went to Craig Bentley 149/150 over Luke Higgins on a 148/150, A grade placings went to Trevor Scarff on 146/150 over Tim Dunn on 143/150, B grade was won by Baden Lloyd on 134/155 after a short shoot off with Anna Evgeniou who took second place on 132/155 and C grade places went to Greg Foster on 136/150 over Rob Low on 131/150.

Scattered amongst the field of 51 competitors there was an assortment of other classifications other than the Open category (dependent on age); some 15 Veterans (over 65 years), 3 Ladies and 6 Juniors (under 18 years). The Veteran trophy was won by Phil Mules who shot a score of 142/150, Anna Evgeniou took out the Ladies trophy on 130/150 and Dan Peel won the Junior trophy on 129/150.

Presentation time followed in the clubhouse and members of the Mules family presented Craig Bentley with the overall trophy, the air rifle.

The Mules Memorial was originally started after the sudden and untimely death of Monarto Clay Target Club’s member Andrew Mules, a talented young shooter from the well-known Mules family who had been influenced in this form of shooting by his father Philip and grandfather Robert (Bob) (deceased) who held the position of SACTA President from 1964 to 1978. At the more recent passing of Kevin Mules, Bob’s brother, the trophy seemed to encompass all of them, a time to reflect on all their achievements and to remember them.

Club President, John Bretag, thanked the sponsors for their donations towards the trophies on the day: Phil, Kevin (Kat) and Greg Mules, Rob Clark, Danny Craig and Peter Kay.

John also thanked those who had helped in any way throughout the day, trappers, canteen and office staff for keeping the shoot running smoothly and reminded all of the Iraq-Afghanistan 100 target event for the following day.

A cosy, leisurely evening meal of pizzas followed for those who stayed.

The forecast of 39°C for Sunday was not looking good but we would find out after a good night’s sleep.

We woke to find an overcast sky and all too soon a few thunderous rumbles could be heard. There appeared

to be a few heavy showers falling in the distant sky and we kept fingers crossed we might be missed. As long as the clouds stayed in place, we may just escape the forecast temperature, but we were ready with extra water and ice blocks in the canteen.

Sunday’s competition looked promising even though we were competing for numbers against two other clubs including Port Augusta’s 3-day birthday shoot. Sixty-nine individual shooters competed over the two days of competition.

The prestigious event of the day was the 100 tgt DB Iraq-Afghanistan War Remembrance Cup and it was shot in conjunction with the Smash for Cash where we had $3,200.00 in cash prizes for the winners.

Competition with another 51 shooters (some had not returned but others took their place) was underway on time as we wanted to beat the heat that was forecast once the cloud-cover dispersed. The clouds in the meantime took on a more menacing colour and as the last two squads were half way through their first 50 targets we called a halt to the competition as an electrical storm was getting way too close for comfort. Wise heads had already been keeping an eye on both the radar and the sky so there was no need for us to be told what to do, we had it all in hand.

20 Clay Target – January 2021

Monarto clay target clubContinued from page 19

With the storm having skirted around us we did enjoy a brief shower but that only added to the humidity which followed, and the clouds having now cleared, left the grounds feeling like a blast furnace.

Despite the intense heat, the shooters continued to shoot excellent scores in rounds of 50 targets at a time. Fifteen possible scores of 50/50 were posted on the scoreboard, six shooters sat on 97/100, three on 98/100 and four on 99/100, but at the end of the event only three possible 100/100’s were there; Robert Warden, Dino Oliviero and that shot by Andrew Fiek (a visiting clay target shooter from Mount Eliza in Victoria who is currently working in South Australia).

Out they went to shoot off for the Overall Championship sash. Dino Oliviero was the first to drop out leaving Robert Warden and Andrew Fiek to shoot it out. They went on, smashing each target to dust until the thirty-third target, missed by Warden and hit by Fiek. We had a winner! Well done Andrew Fiek.

Relief was felt back in the clubhouse where several of the competitors were recovering with ice-packs and wet towels around their necks, which was not surprising, as by this time the

temperature was around 40°C (a temperature we don’t normally compete in) but the event needed to be completed.

All was not yet over; we found that we had five Veterans sitting on 97/100’s who had to go back out into the heat to shoot off for the Veteran’s cash prize. Phil Mules, Ron Batson, Rob Umback, Rito Borzillo and Paul Kelly grabbed their firearms and headed back to the layout in front of the

clubhouse to battle it out. Ron Batson ended up the winner, shooting a score of 113/116.

Presentation time followed in the airconditioned atmosphere inside the clubhouse where Monarto President John handed over to Ryan Foster, our own Iraq-Afghanistan War Veteran who initiated this event four years ago. Ryan introduced several of his Veteran ‘brothers’

who had come to assist with the presentation of trophies. President of the South Australian Chapter of Veterans Motorcycle Club, Jon Cornwall, spoke briefly on their behalf, their role in supporting the mental health of Veterans and the raising of money, and how they were pleased and grateful for efforts like the event we were holding, then both he and Ryan proceeded to hand out the cash prizes, working backwards from the lower grades till they reached the overall winner of the prestigious Iraq-Afghanistan War Remembrance Cup,

Veteran winner, Ron Batson

inscribed with the forty-one names of those who sacrificed their lives for our country.

Overall winner of the Remembrance Cup was Andrew Fiek who shot 133/133. He received the Overall sash and $500.00 in cash money.

Winners in each grade also received a Grade sash and $400.00 cash while the runners-up each received $200.00. Best Veteran’s score, Ladies and Junior also took part of the pot of money on offer; $100.00 each.

Dino Oliviero won AA grade with his 105/105 while Rob Clark took second place with a 99/100. A grade places went to Richard Warden on 132/133 over Tim Dunn on 98/100. Robert Umback took out B grade with his score of 97/100 over Anna Evgeniou on 93/100, and Greg Foster won C grade after having shot 89/100 beating Dennis Ryan on 87/100. Veterans cash prize went to Ron Batson on 113/116, Ladies to Anna Evgeniou on 93/100 and Molly Bretag won the Junior prize on her score of 96/100.

Overall High Gun for the two days went to Craig Bentley with his excellent score of 248/250.

Re-grades after an excellent weekend of shooting were noted by Club Handicapper: Trevor Scarff (A to AA), Richard Warden (A to AA), Alexander Dunn (B to A) and Greg Foster (C to B). Congratulations to all on their fine shooting.

Ryan Foster, Greg Foster C Grade and Jon Cornwall, President of the South Australian Chapter of Veterans Motorcycle Club

The Club is most grateful for all the sponsorship listed below on this distinguished event:

Ryan Foster and the Veterans Motorcycle Club (South Australian Chapter), Tony Pasin Federal

MP for Barker, Lower Murray Grit Blasting, Steve Rogers, Jacksons 4x4 Accessories, Hughes Precision Engineering, Bridge Bobcat, Murray Bridge Recycling, Gnomes Gardening service, Gerald Hopgood and Winchester Australia.

Many thanks again going to Marg Rogers for yet another of her beautiful quilts, depicting poppies for remembrance. We had sold raffle tickets over previous months for the quilt with the winner being drawn at this shoot. Marg’s work is outstanding and her beautiful quilt this year was won by shooter Ron Batson, much to the delight of his wife who had hoped to be the winner.

In keeping with the theme of Remembrance, the Club had added $10.00 on to each shooter’s nominations over the weekend and this was being donated to Legacy. Jim Foster representing the Murray Bridge Branch of Legacy was in attendance for the presentation of awards and following the auctioneering of a couple of donated slabs of cartridges, auctioned off by Club member Greg Foster, the total amount of shooters’ contributions, cash-prizes handed back in and the proceeds of the auctioned items, the Club presented the outstanding Anna Evgeniou – Ladies Molly Bretag – Junior

amount of $1600.00 to him. A huge round of applause could be heard from all as the amount being donated was announced. Monarto you have done it again!

Club President John thanked all who had made this weekend possible: Club and committee members for their work prior to the shoot, sponsors for their generous donations and all of the workers on the weekend. It might be simpler if I just name them all, and hopefully, I don’t leave anyone out: John, Baden, Ryan and Ruth (Office); Ruth, Daniel (stand-in helper and worthy of Honorary membership) and Denise (Canteen); Paul, Dennis, Trevor, Rex, David, Rob and Blake (Trappers) and our raffle

ticket sellers who had doubled up on other duties (but then again most of our workers do this anyway).

A great weekend, no hiccups, wonderful company and a happy atmosphere all-round the grounds; what more could we ask for?

Thanking all who came to make it the wonderful weekend that we all enjoyed and wishing an end to this Corona virus which has played merry hell with our sport. You may call it luck, but we seem to have dodged a second bullet with our larger shoots again this year, with the State now in lock-down restrictions due to COVID-19!

Hopefully we will see you all again at our Anniversary shoot in March next year. Looking forward to a less stressful and brighter 2021.

26 Clay Target – January 2021

We’re free! We’re free!!

After nine long months the shackles have been removed and we are, essentially, back open for business as usual. While there are still plenty of COVID safe hygiene protocols in place; things like social distancing, hand sanitisers and plenty of regular cleaning, we are basically back to where we were before the pandemic struck and closed us all down.

At this time of the year, all of our clubs are usually busy with their Christmas events with the usual prize pool of hams, roasts and chickens! While many had been planning to still hold their annual event it was being done so under the limitations provided by the COVID regulations. With the restrictions eased to their current levels, clubs are excited to be able to hold their usual festivities and we wish them every success with the activities they have planned.

The 2021 Shooting Programs booklet has been printed and distributed to every Zone. If you haven’t got your copy of this book then you had better have a quiet word to your club or Zone Secretary to make sure they have yours set aside. As a way of thanking our many valuable sponsors, this year’s booklet has been printed with free advertisements for all of our supporting companies. Our sponsors do an excellent job of supporting our sport – it’s now our turn to make sure that we, as the shooting membership, make sure that we support them.

When you get your copy of the booklet make sure you have a look through and see the number of new advertisements and make sure you support the people who are supporting us!

So with the shoot programs comes the lists of events to be held next year. There are five events that are to be held at the State Grounds – Echuca Clay Target Club:

• AUniversalTrenchround–February19-21

• StateISSF–April30-May2

What's happening in the vcta

• StateBallTrap–September5(Sunday)

• StateSchoolStudentsFinal–September6(Monday)

• StateDTLCarnival–November11-14

• CommonwealthTitles–nospecificdatesatthis stage

The first major event of the year is the State Skeet Carnival to be held at the Melbourne Gun Club from January 28 to 31. This promises to be a great event and entries are already starting to flood in.

So good to see the Melbourne Gun Club going from strength to strength. They were recently nominated in the Shooting Australia Community Awards in the Club of the Year category. While they were not the award recipients, on this occasion, it is certainly significant recognition of the work and effort of the club’s administration and volunteers that help the club be as successful as it is. Well done Melbourne – you have done the VCTA proud.

On that same nominations note . . . I too, was nominated in the same Awards in the category of Volunteer of the Year. It is very humbling to have received such recognition and reward for effort, it was greatly appreciated to be recognised for the work that one puts into the sport.

So . . . 2020 is almost finished! “Thank Goodness!” I hear you say!

I think we are all looking forward to a fresh start in 2021 and the year promises to be a very exciting one as we work our way back to some form of normality.

At this point, on behalf of the VCTA Executive, clubs and members I would wish everyone a fantastic Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year!

I look forward to seeing you at a shooting range in the near future.

28 Clay Target – January 2021

At around 9pm, lights were blazing and showing off the spectacular white targets for the State Night Continental Championship. The weather had returned to a cool evening, despite the forecast for the weekend and after scouring the bottom of the gun bag for thermals, with unpredictable wind gusts, only one possible prevailed in the great name of Darryn Nicholls taking out the overall, with the next closest at 47/50. The party had just begun with the bar running into the early hours of the morning.

Kick off on Saturday at 9:30 with the Kym Zaniol Memorial run in conjunction with a cash divide Points Score. Seven possibles with the eventual winner being Jarrod Nicholls after 129/129 shoot-off.

By now the temperature is starting to creep up

into the mid 30’s as the 25 target Single Barrel cash divide commences. With eight possibles and eight only one down, many more were to receive a few titbits.

The remaining event for the day was the sought-after Double Barrel which would earn the winner the right of a name on the Honor Board. Fourteen contestants shot the possible, with another eight one point behind. With the mercury now nudging 40°C it was evident that there was not going to be any easy wins over the weekend. Finally the last three were Brent Farnsworth, Jarrod Nicholls and Deserie Baynes, with Deserie keeping her cool (not) and taking out the title from Jarrod Nicholls with 247/247. Recognition also to Roger Freeman (77 years young from Ceduna Gun Club ) for shooting his first 50 and going on to accomplish 95 straight.

red claw (thanks to our Queensland patron Geoff Seawright) to keep the worms at bay whilst waiting for the well reputed roast dinner of lamb, pork, beef, chicken and accompaniments that PAGC has a reputation for, prepared by the PAGC President Steve Baynes assisted by Andrew Bury and the wonderful kitchen team. Thanks to Taylors Wines for their contribution of a few select tastings, the bar and social activities were about to get more interesting with the implementation of a first time Calcutta. Ticket sales throughout the day saw a good starting pool and with a couple of shooters making the $200+ the final pool was a sought after $4780 including a generous contribution of $1000 from Marto. With the arrival of Sunday, the weather was to turn nasty, with 40–45°C, 90km winds and locally raised dust that kept visibility to 400–500m.

Although a possible didn’t prevail, the top score of 122/125 for 75t Champion of Champions came from one of our own members and hard worker Jason King. Then all eyes turned to the handicap, the event the Calcutta was over, with the conditions deteriorating even more, it was a tribute that the only five possibles were from 20m to 25m’s. The only 25m Billy Baynes hung on to win the day 45/45. Billy also had been working hard all weekend as

the Shoot Marshall endeavouring to encourage people to get out and enjoy the elements! The temperature being at the time of the handicap 45.6°C at 4:30 with a wind gust of 82km/hr.Considering the very recent pandemic situation within Australia the PAGC was fortunate to have a total of 60 competitors coming from as far as Alice Springs, Broken Hill, Windorah, Chinchilla, Ceduna and Adelaide to name a few.

With regulations starting to ease and shooting increasing again at clubs, it is a perfect time to remind clubs that if you are conducting corporate days, come and try days or days for new members it is important that the people conducting these days are accredited.

Every Zone in each State should be organising coaching accreditation days with priority given to the members mentioned above as the people that need to be accredited are the ones that are doing

the coaching, not the A grade shooter that thinks they might learn a few tricks and get to AA.

A proposed list of topics has been developed for the next instalment of the Russell and Lauryn Mark videos which will be discussed and hope- fully agreed at the National Executive meeting to be held on Thursday 10th December and will report in next month’s coaching report.

Any member that wishes to become a coach please take the opportunity to approach your club and then make contact with your Zone Coaching Director or the Coaching Director in your State who can organise accreditation courses to start members on their coaching journey.

34 Clay Target – January 2021

Barry Rogers

[Vale \ Barry Rogers, a respected and loved life member of the Echuca Clay Target Club, passed away on the 25th of September 2020 at the age of 86.

Barry was a member from early in the 1960`s, nearly 60 years of dedication to his beloved Echuca Clay Target Club.

He was instrumental in moving the club from its former location (on the edge of Echuca) to its current site and put in many hours getting the club to the standard it is today. From building trap houses to holding the Secretarial role and everything in between.

Barry's love for the sport of Clay Target shooting evolved from an early age when he would attend live bird competitions. He was a natural and excellent shot and had his fair share of wins. Barry would frequently entertain the younger Echuca members with his stories of the live bird competitions, from before it was banned.

Barry loved his dogs and will always be remembered for driving around with two Jack Russell Terriers in the front of the ute with him.

He enjoyed camping trips away with his mates both young and old where particularly the young would sit around the camp fire for hours listening to his fishing yarns.

In later years he ran the practice trap at the Victoria State Carnival and was passionate about assisting with the School events.

The Echuca Clay Target Club, as well as all the great mates he made along the way, will greatly miss Barry. His memory will live forever.

Mark Rogers, on behalf of the Echuca Clay Target Club

by Michael Kruger-Davis

Psychological Skills for Shooting

Mental Preparation and Practise

Now that all State borders are opening up, it is likely that 2021 will see the National ISSF, Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clay championships being held again. As this article will be appearing in the January edition of the CTSN, and most of us have had a forced break from shooting dur-ing 2020, it is timely to revist what is needed in an effective mental skills training program. Over the years, I have been approached by several readers regarding putting together a ‘mental skills training program’ for them. For most of us this is an individual thing, specific to our sport, but there are several common features that all mental skills training programs must have.

What are the basics of a developing a mental skills training program

Firstly, set goals. This principle is not surprising. What is the point of training and working hard if you have no idea of where you want to go, how to get there or even know when you are there. Goal setting is an essential part of any mental skills training program and any sports psy- chology text book has the basics of how to set goals. Keeping a journal is integral to being able to monitor your goals and successes.

Secondly, use a verbal or visual cue. Those readers who have been to any of my work- shops will be aware of the importance of using verbal and visual cues. Verbal cues are important in reinforcing our beliefs and abilities. Positive affirmations can assist us when the going gets tough, and can help us redirect our thoughts when we need to. For the shooter visual cues can be very important in narrowing your focus and heightening your level of concentration. I use the visual cue of the gun closing and the top

leaver coming across as an indicator that I need to focus on the target that will soon emerge.

Thirdly, focus on the positive. Positive thoughts are necessary for achievement in sport. How-ever, there is a big difference between positive thinking and wishful thinking. Focusing on the positive is necessary to eliminate self-doubt. Self-doubt occurs when we believe we cannot do something; shoot this target, shoot a poss- ible, win a championship, etc, and armed with this belief we end up sabotaging our own effort and fail. Wishful thinking is just hoping for a good outcome.

The next principle is to build in relaxation time. Without relaxation you can end up over-trained. This will lead to not being focused, bored, complacent, unmotivated and tired. Relaxation allows you to focus on your breath- ing, lowering your heart and respiration rate, blood pressure and gives you time to either focus on your thoughts or to let your thoughts go. Relaxation allows you to recuperate both mentally and physically. Relaxation, coupled with focusing on your breathing, becomes a mindfulness activity and allows you to stay focused in the here and now.

Finding the right tension level is the next basic principle. There is an optimum level somewhere between being fully relaxed and hypervigilent. The right level will depend on the individual and the sport. For shooting, there is a differ-ence required for tension and concentration, between when we are actually shooting and the time between each shot. Between shots is the time when we need to focus on our breathing and where possible relax and broaden our focus. When we are about to shoot our concentration needs to narrow so that it is only the target we are focusing on.

The sixth principle is to take a look at your

Competition and Consumer aCt The attention of advertisers is drawn to the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and the provisions in the Act which apply to advertising. It is not possible for the A.C.T.A. to ensure that advertisements which are published in this magazine comply in all respects with the Act and the responsibility must therefore be on the person, company or advertising agency submitting the advertisement for publication. The A.C.T.A. reserves the right to refuse any advertisement without stating the reason.

opponents. Each of us have strengths and weaknesses and we should remember that those we are competing against also have strengths and weaknesses. We shouldn’t give up just because we see a ‘good shot’ drive into the car park. We all have bad days and this could be his. Today you might be in the ‘zone’. We should visualise ourselves competing and visualise yourself hitting every target and winning.

The next principle probably means more in golf than in shooting but it does have some rele-vance. Study the course. Be aware of all the good points about this venue and all the poss-ible distractions; trees, power poles, wind, etc.

Visualise proper moves. This is the next prin-ciple. Each sport has specific moves and it is important to visualise yourself performing the moves necessary to shoot the targets. Visualise your swing, the sight picture, the gun firing, recoil, the target breaking and importantly your follow through. Visualise yourself doing it all perfectly, over and over again.

Imaging coping with extremes. When you are visualising don’t just focus on fair-weather situations. Visualise the rain, the wind, the dis-tractions of fellow competitors coughing, spit-ting shells in your direction, etc. Imagine and visualise what it will feel like to pick up the gun after shooting 100 targets, 200, 300, 400, and so on.

The next principle is to break out the video camera. Videos can be very useful in showing you what you do well and what you need to work on. Another use can be as a visualisation tool. Video tape yourself in competition, especi- ally if you shoot all the qualifying targets. Use this tape as a pre-visualisation technique. This will work much better if it can be combined with relaxing in a tub of warm, salty water such as a floatation tank.

Next, it is important to see yourself winning. Build a mental picture of yourself shooting all the targets and winning the event.

If you focus on the process and stay in the present you are more able to Maintain your ‘cool’ under pressure. Using verbal and visual cues and focusing on your breathing you are

more able to remain cool and calm when it is most needed. The other important point here is practise. If you need to practise to revise and improve your technique then this is OK, but what most of us need is to practise being under pressure and this can only come from entering competitions.

The next principle is not easy but it is essential to make your emotions work for you. Emo- tional responses can derail good performances very quickly. Be mindful of what will trigger certain responses for you and limit thinking about these during competitions. Stay focused on your own process of shooting the target and do not worry about distractions, noises from loud speakers, shooters taking too long to shoot, break downs and so on.

The last two principles are, develop your own rituals and develop pre-event rituals. Rituals, including pre-shot routines, have the ability to help you fucus and redirect your attention when needed. Pre-event routines can be used to broaden the focus and keep you relaxed and composed before the competition or shoot-off commences.

These fifteen principles are the basic tenets of most mental skills training programs, but it must be remembered that any program should be individualised for the sport and the athlete and supervised by a qualified coach or sports psychologist if maximum gain is to be made.
