THE STATE OPERA

‘Step through the door, anything can happen’ says the proprietor of the travelling carnival in the bingeworthy HBO series Carnivàle. And ‘anything’ does happen… Thrills, terror, tears, gore, wit, blood and love. So too it does in the 2020 Season of State Opera - all of the above, and exceptional music making as well. At State Opera in 2020, ‘everyone wins a prize’.

The power, majesty, and pagan ritual that is Orff’s Carmina Burana; Rossini’s Barber of Seville with its madcap wit, sheer joy, vocal fireworks, and impudence; the freshly-minted new production of Bran Nue Dae with its irresistible lust for life; Sondheim’s masterpiece Sweeney Todd with its moody intensity, gripping storytelling, and terror; Verdi’s mighty Macbeth for its blood and thunder score and fantastic (in the true sense of the word) theatricality; and finally the Richard Mills / Peter Goldsworthy operatic staging of the moving, elegiac and timeless great Australian play Summer of the Seventeenth Doll.

Rossini once said ‘how wonderful opera would be if there were no singers.’ And yet his Barber and every one of the State Opera 2020 offerings showcases just what singers can do - delight, move, inspire, astound, and electrify. We are proud to bring you new faces and new voices, alongside many welcome favourites, for a season which promises to be a rollercoaster of passion.

See you at the opera.

STUART MAUNDER AM Artistic Director and

YARMILA ALFONZETTI Executive Director

Step through the door, anything can happen.

Welcome

THE CHAIRMAN

2019 was a year of change for our opera company, a year of significant expansion and great highs, cementing the reputation of State Opera as one of the jewels in the crown that is the arts sector of South Australia. With outdoor opera in Victoria Square/ Tarndanyangga, the Lost Operas of Oz and some of the great works of the canon, we have expanded our reach, built our audiences, made many new friends and welcomed back our nearest and dearest.

On behalf of the board, I pay tribute to the work of Yarmila Alfonzetti, Stuart Maunder and the whole team at State Opera for delivering a great 2019, and the prospect of an even greater 2020. But most importantly a big thank you our generous donors, sponsors and supporters for your continued passion for the work of State Opera. We could not do it without you.

Opera is alive and thriving in this state and State Opera is proud to be delivering the lion’s share all through the year. 2020 promises to be a year of even more opera; more highs, more passion.

More opera for more people. Welcome back for 2020.

JOHN IRVING Chairman of the Board

THE PREMIER

We are incredibly fortunate to have in our midst a performing arts company the calibre of State Opera South Australia.

A company renowned for showcasing world-class Australian singers, and which consistently develops, creates and presents some of the great works of this rich and wonderful art form. As an employer of many South Australians, both on the stage and behind the scenes, State Opera has also set a benchmark for other companies to follow by championing home-grown creative talent.

I am delighted to see so much diversity in the 2020 State Opera program for us to enjoy, explore and celebrate. There is nothing like a night at the opera. I have loved being a part of State Opera’s audience and experiencing everything from the intimacy of Dido & Aeneas at Plant 4 Bowden, to the grandeur of Merry Widow in the Festival Theatre, and the spectacular presentation of Carmen in the Square…State Opera has done it all.

In 2020 this company will once again be back at its original home – Her Majesty’s Theatre. I am also pleased to see that the high-quality and unique Opera Winter School Program will continue, after a successful trial, providing training and performance opportunities for upper secondary and tertiary students.

I encourage you to join me for another exciting year of opera.

The most popular work of the 20th Century, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana is a powerful pagan musical offering that celebrates nature, fortune, love, lust, and drinking.

Based on a collection of medieval texts, it is an epic work for mass choir, orchestra, and soloists. From its opening chorus O Fortuna, the raw, bold power of the music captivates and exalts, making it one of the most iconic scores in popular culture. Starring Desiree Frahn and Paul McMahon, with the full State Opera Chorus, Young Adelaide Voices, and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Benjamin Northey. This choral spectacular will be a night to remember.

Following a sell-out performance of Carmen in the Square in 2019, State Opera presents Carmina Burana at Memorial Drive Park for one extraordinary night. Platinum ticket and hospitality packages are now available.

THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

A love-sick Count, a feisty young woman, and a barber with a cunning plan. Rossini’s comic masterpiece The Barber of Seville is a giddy romp along the path to true love, by way of serenades, ridiculous disguises and trickery. If love makes a fool of us all, then this popular opera buffa is one of the greats. Imprisoned by her wicked guardian, the savvy Rosina is no match for lock and key, especially when the fast-talking, flashy Figaro turns up and promises to help her find the man of her dreams. This vivid and vivacious production features a dazzling collection of Australia’s opera stars.

LES ARTS FLORISSANTS

State Opera is proud to present the world’s pre-eminent Baroque ensemble, Les Arts Florissants, in Adelaide for the first time in over 25 years. William Christie’s Jardin des Voix (Garden of Voices) needs no introduction: it has become renowned world-over as an annual showcase of the brightest new stars of early music. It has launched the careers of Sonya Yoncheva, Lea Desandre, Marc Mauillon and Christophe Dumaux to name a few. As part of their 40th birthday celebrations and world tour, Les Arts Florissants presents Mozart’s opera La Finta Giardiniera, featuring the 2019 artists of le Jardin des Voix.

This production is commissioned by the Opera Conference, Australia’s national partnership of professional opera companies.

Set out on the road trip of a lifetime with a spunky runaway teenager, two hippies, a wily Uncle, and a German priest. By the time you shake the red dust from your feet, you’ll know what it means to come home. Jimmy Chi’s coming-of-age musical Bran Nue Dae is an exuberant ride through 1960s Western Australia. Young Willie hitchhikes his way from mission school back to Broome, determined to win the heart of the girl he left behind. A feel-good mash-up of rock-and-roll, gospel, country and blues music made this first-ever Aboriginal musical a sparkling success in 1990 and inspired a hit movie.

This new production recreates the historic Sun Pictures open-air cinema in Broome, and invites you to experience a quintessentially Australian story.

SWEENEY TODD

There once was a barber who had it all; a happy life, a beautiful wife - all ended by a savage act of betrayal. Meet Sweeney Todd, “the demon barber of Fleet Street”. Born out of the ashes of tragedy and set on revenge, he makes for a dapper and dangerous man to know. Together with the beguiling and batty Mrs Lovett, a twisted plan is hatched – genius and ghoulish in equal measure. But the best pies in London town may not last for long, as Sweeney’s thirst for vengeance leads them perilously close to the razor’s edge. Considered one of the most powerful, dramatic and theatrical horror tales ever set to music, this work will leave hearts racing and spines tingling long after the curtain has fallen.

MACBETH

It is a time of unrest in Scotland, and a brave General named Macbeth has sworn fealty to his King. A coven of witches prophesize that there will be a new King of Scotland, and Macbeth’s ambitious wife plots to hasten their destiny. Having killed King Duncan and ascended to the throne, the pair are increasingly consumed by paranoia and guilt, as a treacherous spiral of deceit and death reaches its inevitable conclusion.

A rare chance to hear one of Verdi’s early scores in a powerful new production, laden with blood and thunder. Sung by a magnificent Australian cast including James Clayton and Kate Ladner.

SUMMER OF THE

SEVENTEENTH DOLL

Based on Ray Lawler’s 1955 Australian play of the same name, this chamber opera tells the story of a long-standing tradition at the end of the sugarcane season, in which cane-cutters Barney and Roo travel south to Melbourne for their annual fling with two city girls. But this year, the seventeenth year, is different. Gone are the larrikin summers of their youth. Instead, their reunion is full of tension, silence, and awkward attempts to hold onto their past. One girl has married; all of them struggle to come to terms with what their futures hold.

Lawler’s play is considered to be the most significant in Australian playwriting, marking the first time the authentic Australian voice was depicted on stage. So too does Mills and Goldsworthy’s opera express, at its heart, something heroic, fragile, and utterly moving.

Family, secret legacies, betrayal and forgiveness – a story spanning four generations and two continents. Andrew Bovell’s extraordinary play When the Rain Stops Falling is one of the most celebrated Australian plays of the past 20 years. Its epic narrative - traversing eighty years, and travelling from a small 1950s London flat, via the Coorong in 1988, into the heart of the Australian continent in 2039, where snow falls on Uluru and fish fall from the sky – is epic in its dimensions, emotional grandeur and sweeping theatrical vision. Originally commissioned and presented by Brink Productions, it premiered as part of the 2008 Adelaide Festival of Arts, and went on to tour Australia, with new productions around the globe receiving critical and audience acclaim at every turn.

State Opera is excited to announce its partnership with Brink Productions to develop When the Rain Stops Falling into a new Australian opera, reuniting the original creative team. With a series of workshop developments throughout 2020, this work will be proudly created in Adelaide by two companies whose commitment to Australian creative stories and local artists is at the forefront of their work.

The past is a mystery. And yet, perhaps it wil l be easier to explain than the fish.

Many of the 2020 performances will have a lock out period (that is, a period where latecomers will not be permitted to enter the theatre). Therefore, we recommend arriving at least 30 minutes prior to the performance start time.

CHANGES

State Opera reserves the right to change artists, programs, venue and or performance times should this become necessary.

ACCESSIBILITY

All venues have accessible seating and toilets, and are service dog friendly. Hearing loops and hearing assistance is available at the Festival Theatre and Her Majesty’s Theatre in some seats. Please advise us of any specific accessibility requirements at the time of booking.

GETTING THERE

There is no dedicated onsite parking at our 2020 venues, however there are car parks nearby and all venues are serviced by public transport options (buses, trams, and trains). Please note that re-development at Adelaide Festival Centre means that the car park is closed and the Convention Centre car park is operating a limited capacity. For patrons attending any 2020 show who have accessibility requirements, we recommend drop-off or taxi services directly to the entrance of each venue, particularly at the Adelaide Festival Centre.

ADELAIDE FESTIVAL CENTRE

Please note that all venues, including Her Majesty’s are now cashless venues. Bars and Merchandise counters only accept cards.
