Scholarship Descriptions – Choose 5 TOTAL AVID Scholarships:

PCWL Shannon O’Brien Memorial AVID Scholarship: $2,000 over a 2-year period

The applicant must be a graduating senior, participating in AVID during all 4 years at JJ Pearce High School

Must be of excellent character Possess strong leadership skills through school, community service

and work outside of home Has laid the ground work for a solid college plan and career goals Scholastic achievements and AVID participation and leadership

PCWL Kim Caston Strive for Excellence AVID Scholarship: $1,000

Graduating senior with minimum 2 years JJP AVID program participation (includes 11&12 grades)

Scholastic accomplishments and AVID participation and leadership will be taken into consideration (See section 4 of the application)

A high level of determination, goal-setting and achieving are key factors.

PCWL Ann Sanders Future Teacher AVID Scholarship: $500

Cathy Scheurer Leadership Scholarship Application

The PCWL Cathy Scheurer Scholarship is in the amount of $1,000. Remembering Cathy Scheurer:

Cathy Scheurer, a former Pearce mom and community leader, was a woman of leadership, integrity, strength, and kindness. Mrs. Scheurer demonstrated these skills through her “community involvement,” whether it be at her children’s school, her neighborhood, her work, or her church. She was a natural leader in every aspect of her life. She united the Pearce community as a positive role model, out-of-the-box thinker, and friend to all. Mrs. Scheurer passed away in 2004. The young lady receiving this scholarship must possess these characteristics.

The young lady who receives the Cathy Scheurer Scholarship should exemplify scholastic accomplishments, leadership and community service.

Cathy Scheurer Scholarship Criteria:

The applicant must be a graduating senior girl from JJ Pearce High School. The student must have participated in extra-curricular activities and be of good character. An additional written essay is required. This scholarship will be presented at the PCWL May awards program. This scholarship is a one-time award and non-renewable.

The Spirit of PCWL Scholarship Application

The PCWL Spirit of PCWL Scholarship is a onetime scholarship in the amount of $1,500 The Pearce Community Women’s League was established in 2010 by a group of “empty nester” Pearce moms who had volunteered together throughout their kids’ school years. These women wanted to carry on their passion for the community and formed the Pearce Community Women’s’ League. (PCWL) Today, PCWL volunteers throughout the RISD and are the largest provider of college scholarships to JJ Pearce High School.

This scholarship honors their spirit as they continue to be a bright light to our community.

The Pearce Community Women’s League is proud of the diverse student body at JJ Pearce. There are those that have worked hard to overcome obstacles, others have been involved in volunteer work, while some have shared their talents. All have added to the “spirit” of our thriving Pearce Community.

Shannon O’ Brien Memorial AVID Scholarship

The PCWL Shannon O’Brien Memorial Scholarship is a one-time scholarship in the amount of $2,000 distributed over a two-year period.

Remembering Shannon O’Brien

Shannon attended Richardson ISD schools and graduated from JJ Pearce High School. After earning a degree in education from Texas Tech University, she returned to Richardson ISD to pursue her lifelong calling as an educator. She began her career as an elementary school teacher, REACH teacher and completed her classroom career as an Instructional Specialist and AVID Coordinator and teacher at Parkhill Junior High. Her students referred to her as “Mrs. O’B” and all agreed that she was demanding and firm; but a loving teacher who wanted the best for all kids. As an Instructional Specialist, she mentored new teachers and wrote curriculum. Shannon felt one of the most rewarding aspects of her career was working with her AVID kids at Parkhill Junior High. She loved seeing her students succeed at the high school level and eventually attend college.

In addition to her 32 years of service as an educator, Shannon was involved in numerous community organizations, including Pearce Community Women’s League. Shannon will be remembered for her love of education, community and commitment to all kids. This scholarship encompasses the love and passion she held for RISD students and the power of AVID in the lives of her students.

Jill Button Service Scholarship Application

The PCWL Jill Button Scholarship is in the amount of $1,000

Remembering Jill Button: Jill Button dedicated countless volunteer hours to help grow and improve the Pearce Choir program in the seven years her daughters were members and beyond. She quickly took on leadership responsibilities and led Pearce Choir through kindness, always putting others first, looking for creative ways to problem solve, and support in every way possible. Mrs. Button passed away in 2014 after a two and a half year battle with breast cancer, but she will be remembered by her contagious laugh, thoughtful acts of kindness and servant heart.

The Pearce Choir member who receives the Jill Button scholarship should stand out by how much he/she loves to serve others.

Jill Button Scholarship Criteria:

The applicant must be a graduating senior from JJ Pearce High School. The applicant must be currently participating in JJ Pearce Choir. Rachel Breland Courage and Strength Scholarship Application

The PCWL Rachel Breland Scholarship is in the amount of $500

Remembering Rachel Breland:

Rachel Breland, a JJ Pearce 2005 graduate and college graduate, was a lovely young lady with many talents

and gifts. Rachel was a leader in the classroom, on the sports field and in her dream job. Her creativity, love

of music, witty sense of humor, community service, faith, and genuine love was given freely to her family and

friends. Rachel always had a positive attitude and encouraged those around her. Rachel passed away from

brain cancer after a courageous two-year battle still having hope for the future and leaving an astonishing

influence on those she touched during her short lifetime. Rachel was determined to make a difference.

The young lady who receives the Rachel Breland scholarship should possess characteristics that show

determination, courage and strength through any adversity that life's journey brings them.

Rachel Breland Scholarship Criteria:

The applicant must be a graduating senior girl from JJ Pearce High School.

Brooke Ziegler Caring and Friendliness Scholarship Application

The PCWL Brooke Ziegler Scholarship is in the amount of $750

Remembering Brooke Ziegler:

Brooke Ziegler, a dear friend and former PCWL member, was a woman full of energy and life. Brooke never met a stranger and had the uncanny ability to befriend everyone. She could ask questions that immediately pulled a person into the conversation, making them feel like the most important person in the world. Ms. Ziegler attributed much of her friendliness and sense of adventure to the 30+ years she worked as a Delta flight attendant. Ms. Ziegler brought fun and laughter to each situation - laced with the importance of facing reality.

Even in the midst of her deepest need, Ms. Ziegler sought to help others going through similar battles as she organized a bone marrow drive - teaching all of us that making a difference to others is what we are called to do. Ms. Ziegler lost her courageous battle with Myelodysplastic syndrome (a form of leukemia) in 2014.

Ms. Ziegler loved her three children and especially loved being involved in their JJ Pearce sporting activities whether it was cheerleading, soccer or any other school event.

The young lady who receives the Brooke Ziegler scholarship should possess characteristics that show energy, friendliness and acceptance of all.

Brooke Ziegler Scholarship Criteria:

The applicant must be a graduating senior girl from JJ Pearce High School.

The student must have participated in JJ Pearce sports (this also includes cheerleading, Pacesetters, or Stampede) during her senior year and be of good character.

Construction Education Foundation of North Texas Scholarship

This $750.00 scholarship is a onetime gift that will go towards tuition for a JJ Pearce student to attend the Construction Education Foundation of North Texas

Construction Education Foundation of North Texas (CEF) is located near the DFW Airport. CEF is a college dedicated to providing students and employees in the construction industry avenues of broadening their skill levels and providing classes that will enable them to further advance their Construction Industry Careers.

The purpose of CEF is to provide the construction industry with the most qualified technically trained people, from Craft Workers to the Supervisory level. CEF targets construction excellence.

Gregg Larimer Cross Country and Track Scholarship Application

The PCWL Gregg Larimer Scholarship is in the amount of $500 Coach Gregg Larimer was a cross country and track coach at JJ Pearce who retired in June 2015 after 37 years in coaching.

He graduated from W.T. White High School in Dallas, competing in football, soccer, and track. He received academic and athletic honors. Coach Larimer earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University of North Texas. He was a punter and kicker on the football team. He competed in triathlons, track, and road races until age 31, when he was involved in a serious car accident.

Coach Larimer coached gymnastics since age 20, for the Farmers Branch Gymnastics Team for 15 years, while also coaching in high school. In 1980, he came to JJ Pearce as a science teacher and gymnastics coach. Since 1989, Coach Larimer has coached the cross country team, then the distance runners in track. Throughout his career, he was an inspiration to his students, and created an environment which allowed each athlete to achieve his or her personal best.

The student who receives the Gregg Larimer Scholarship should exemplify scholastic accomplishments, leadership and sportsmanship.

Gregg Larimer Scholarship Criteria:

The applicant must be a graduating senior from JJ Pearce High School. The applicant must have participated in cross country or track for at least one academic year

while at JJ Pearce. The applicant should exemplify good sportsmanship The applicant should be well rounded and participate in other community service or extra-curricular

Kim Caston Strive for Excellence AVID Scholarship

The Kim Caston Strive for Excellence Scholarship is in the amount of $1,000

Honoring Kim Caston:

The Ten most powerful words in the English language:

“If it is to be, it is up to me.”

Throughout her life, Kim Caston has always believed you can be anything you set your mind to. This belief has sustained her as a college athlete, Division Manager of a Fortune 50 company, a community and school volunteer and currently as a Trustee for the Richardson Independent School District. Her belief that ALL students have the potential for greatness has motivated her in work to ensure that all students have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams.

Eight years ago, Kim and friends wanted to stay connected, following their children’s graduations from JJ Pearce. They founded Pearce Community Women’s League to serve the Pearce Community, the schools, teachers, staff and students. This past September, Kim’s family honored her birthday by funding this scholarship in her name. Through her countless volunteer efforts, Kim continues to support students to strive for excellence.

The student who receives the Kim Caston Strive for Excellence Scholarship should demonstrate a track record of determination, personal motivation and a commitment to personal achievement.

The Susan Parker Relentless Determination Scholarship is in the amount of $2,000

Remembering Susan Parker… Susan Parker was a Pearce mom who had three sons who graduated from PHS. Throughout their school years, Susan was very involved in PTA, Booster Club and Pearce Varsity Basketball as the team mom. As team mom, she was dedicated to the success of ALL the young men on the team. A special talent of Mrs. Parker was her ability to sell ads for the sports program. Susan had a relentless spirit and extreme determination in her pursuit of excellence. Susan was also upstanding in her character. She was available for her family, friends and anybody who needed her help. Susan was behind many acts of kindness that she pursued in a quiet manner never looking for recognition. The recipient of the Susan Parker scholarships should exemplify determination and strength of character.

Susan Parker Relentless Determination Scholarship Criteria:

Financial need is a criteria for this scholarship. Fill out the financial need section (section 3) on the

application.

The applicant must be a graduating senior who has participated on a JJ Pearce sports team, or

shown leadership during their four years of high school in an activity through PHS, church or

synagogue, or another organization.

The applicant must be able to express how their determination helped to shape or enhance the

organization or team they were involved with, in a positive way.

Grades and activities outside of school will be strongly considered.

An additional essay is required.

The scholarships are a one-time award for college expenses and are non-renewable

The scholarship will be presented at the May PCWL Awards Program.

Attach an essay of approximately 250 words on one typed page, double spaced, 12-point font on the following: Provide an example indicating how your determination helped you overcome an obstacle, in order to make a positive difference for your family, your community or your team. Attach an essay of approximately 250 words on one typed page, double spaced, 12-point font on the following: Character is defined as doing the right thing, even when no one is looking. Discuss a time you chose a path that indicated your character. Be specific and explain the situation that allowed you to spotlight your character, and show how your choice made a difference.

Ben Neighbor Scholarship Application

The PCWL Ben Neighbor Scholarship is in the amount of $1,000

Remembering Ben Neighbor:

A 2005 graduate of J.J. Pearce High School, Ben epitomized the term “student-athlete,” He was captain of the football team, earned all-state academic honors, as well as all-city and all-district honors. Ben was a great man, husband, friend, cousin, brother, and son. To celebrate his amazing life and the impact he had on others, the Ben Neighbors Scholarship Fund was established for outstanding male student-athletes.

The person who receives the Ben Neighbor Scholarship should exemplify Ben’s life of integrity, kindness, leadership, effort and heart for welcoming and embracing all.

Ben Neighbor Scholarship Criteria: The applicant must be a graduating senior boy from J.J. Pearce High School.

The applicant must have participated in a sport for at least one academic year while at J.J. Pearce and be

of good character

The applicant should exemplify good sportsmanship

An additional written essay is required.

This scholarship will be presented at the PCWL May awards program.

This scholarship is a one-time award and non-renewable.

Ben Neighbor Scholarship Essay:

He led a life of integrity, kindness, leadership, effort and heart for welcoming and embracing all. PCWL Fine Arts Scholarship

The PCWL Fine Arts Scholarship is in the amount of $500

PCWL recognizes fine art impacts society by instilling values, changing opinions and translating experiences across space and time. Research has shown the positive effects the arts can bring. Because of these influences, PCWL will award a Fine Arts Scholarship to a student who has been involved in Fine Arts activities at JJ Pearce.

PCWL Fine Arts Scholarship Criteria:

The applicant must be a graduating senior from JJ Pearce High School The applicant must have been involved with JJ Pearce fine arts for a minimum of 2 years and is

currently enrolled in a fine arts course (Fine Arts refers to classes pertaining to a form of art, dance, music or theater)

The applicant should exemplify scholastic accomplishments and leadership An additional written essay is required This scholarship will be presented at the PWCL May awards program This scholarship is a one-time award and non-refundable

Determination Scholarship Honoring George McFarlane Application

The PCWL George Thomas McFarlane Scholarship is in the amount of $500

Remembering George Thomas McFarlane: George Thomas McFarlane was born of immigrant parents and wanted to be the first in his family to attend and graduate from college. He was an honest, intelligent, hard-working man who was a loyal friend. He was also a man with a great sense of humor who never met a stranger. His voice was the loudest, perpetually off-key voice heard singing hymns at church, but believed making the effort was important. Regrettably, George was unable to finish college, but recognizing the importance of a college education, he worked hard and was able to put all of his kids through college.

The person who receives the George McFarlane Scholarship should demonstrate hard work and determination.

George McFarlane Scholarship Criteria:

The applicant must be a graduating senior from JJ Pearce High School Applicant’s parents did not graduate from college Applicant’s GPA is in the 80-89 range An additional written essay is required This scholarship will be presented at the PCWL May awards program.
