We are only a few weeks into the new school and there are so many exciting things to share. We are looking forward to an awesome second half of the school year. National End Veterans Homelessness Winners Congratulations to our Kaōhao School Student Council, Advisors Ms. Espie and Mrs. Pao, and all of you for winning the National End Veterans Homelessness Challenge! This fall schools across the country began competing with one another to raise the most money and collect the most household goods and clothing to benefit homeless or at-risk veterans. The donations schools collected help homeless veterans move into safe, stable housing. Since 2010, the goal of the VA Homeless Programs Office has been to connect veterans with permanent, affordable housing as quickly as possible. After tabulating the donations made by each school Ka‘ōhao School was named as the winner of this year's challenge with donations totaling over $3,000! We Have Shade! Mahalo to everyone for supporting the installation of our new shade structure to protect our students and staff from the harmful rays of the sun! We especially want to recognize our teachers and staff who have recommended this addition to our campus for many years and our shade structure team who put in many hours working with the Building Department of the City and County of Honolulu, the Facilities Management Section of the State Department of Education and our Contractor. Save the Date! Vintage Auction 2020 Join us for Lanikai Vintage Auction Gala to support Kaōhao School on February 22, at Mid- Pac Country Club! Our special appeal at the Auction will be a state of the art safety and communication system to help protect students in times of emergency. Does your child love to talk, entertain, or perform in front of an audience? Is communication a skill your child needs to grow? Have him/her join the Speech Festival Club! Our first meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 25 from 2:15-3 in A-2, and then practices will be held every Tuesday until the festival. The Speech Festival is on Saturday, April 25, at Castle High School from 8 -11:30. There is a small fee for participating. Students should come with poem(s), song lyrics, short stories, or writings on a topic of interest to work toward memorizing and performing each practice and then for the big show on April 25. Please make sure to check your calendars for any conflicts as we want committed speakers to represent our school! If you have another after-school class on Tuesdays, please come talk to the teachers, if you are a returning member of Speech Club, we can work it out :) Other questions, please come to our first meeting on February 25 or get in touch with Mrs. VDK, Mrs. McKay. or Mrs. Caliri.

This year, Vintage donations will be directed at providing our students with State of the Art Safety and Communication Systems that will keep our school safe, modern, and efficient.

Currently, our phone systems and communication equipment is antiquated and outdated. In case of any emergency, we want our children to be in a safe environment, where staff are able to protect the school as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Thank you for the continued support and partnership in developing a school experience that leads to excellence not only in learning but in navigating life. We also want to thank you for the continued support and partnership in our annual community fundraiser, Vintage Lanikai Auction Gala.

Please come support our Vintage Auction and gala on February 22, 5:30 PM at the MidPac County Club. We look forward to spending a special evening with you. Purchase your tickets to the Auction at:

Wave Energy Hits Hawaii In an exciting step toward a greener future, Hawaii is leading the way for a renewable revolution with wave energy. A unique device, referred to as a Wave Energy Converter (WEC), harnesses the power of our oceans by using the motion of the sea to generate electricity. The prototype used here in Hawaii, the Azura Wave Converter, works by using a large buoy that bobs and sways due to the waves and tidal pull, generating electricity. The current then travels through an undersea cable and is fed into Oahu’s power grid via Hawaiian Electric. Though it is only in stages of testing, the potential for this technology to take off in Hawaii and other coastal regions/island nations is vast. According to some estimates, wave energy could even possibly take care of 25% of the United States’ energy needs and Azura is the only one like it being used in North American waters to date. The device, which was shipped from Oregon and utilizes technology from Ireland, is currently located in Kaneohe Bay at a Navy Wave Energy Test Site. The ocean is an amazing source of energy as it is free, clean, continually renewed, and always available. Hawaii is an ideal place to explore the potential of wave energy and it is an awesome opportunity to have this technology right in our backyard! For questions concerns, please contact the Office of Representative Cynthia Thielen at (808)586-7005.
