2020 IESA Class AA Wrestling Championships 3
41 Years of IESA Boys State WrestlingWELCOME...
On behalf of the Illinois Elementary School Association Board of Directors, the Wrestling Advisory Committee, and our 988 member schools, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2020 IESA Boys State Wrestling Tournament. We are fortunate to hold the tournament at the beautiful Convocation Center on the NIU campus. This is the 41st year IESA has conducted a state wrestling championship for boys and the second year for the two-class system. IESA has seen unprecedented growth in the wrestling program. In 2015, 150 schools entered the IESA state series. This year 189 schools entered the state series. The 20% increase necessitated the formation of the two class system. What started in 1980 in Charleston on the campus of Eastern Illinois University has now expanded into one of the most exciting interscholastic activities in which IESA conducts a state championship. The sport of wrestling demands a high level of skill, discipline, and commitment of the student-athletes. A special welcome and congratulations are extended to the wrestlers of this year's tourney. You are to be commended for your hard work, practice, and dedication which have enabled you and your teammates to achieve this success. I also want to congratulate and welcome the coaches of the competing teams who have trained and prepared these athletes to reach this level of competition.
This championship is a dream come true for the participants. Here, the student-athletes have a chance to demonstrate the fruits of their hard work and dedication to the sport of wrestling in an education-based, competitive environment. Further, these participants proudly represent their families, schools, and communities in the most visible forum possible. They exhibit what is best with the youth in our society. The sense of community pride shown in these championships is a tangible display of appreciation for excellence demonstrated by our schools.
The member schools of the IESA believe in the value of interscholastic competition, from the baseball field to the volleyball court to the music hall. Competition is the glue that binds problem solving, logic, ethics, and leadership, as well as the vast array of factual knowledge taught in
the schools. Just as important, interscholastic competition is a great tool to increase academic performance and citizenship standards of the participants.
To the parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, other family members, friends and fans alike, I ask each of you to demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship. Please show your respect, appreciation, and support to all of the competitors--not just your team. Your dedication and support to middle school and junior high activities is genuinely appreciated. We ask the athletes to do their best.....I am asking you to do your best to display good sportsmanship. Regardless of their final individual or team finish, everyone here is a champion!!!!!! Thank you for your support of IESA activities and for taking the time to be a part of these young athletes' lives. We hope this is an experience which enriches their education.
The IESA deeply appreciates the kindness extended to us by the DeKalb School District and to Northern Illinois University in permitting us to use their facility for our State Wrestling Tournament. I thank them, Amonaquenette Parker, Principal at DeKalb Huntley Middle School; Brant Boyer, Principal at DeKalb Clinton Rosette; Jared Johnsen, Tournament Manager; Rob Tiggelaar, Sports Coordinator for DeKalb; Sean Frazier, NIU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics; Heather Katkus, Director, NIU Convocation Center; Jori McCullough, Event Coordinator, NIU Convocation Center; Courtney Strohacker, Coordinator of the DeKalb Area Convention and Visitors Bureau; Phil Voorhis and Jeff Sisson, NIU Athletic Trainers; and all the 150 + volunteers for their efforts to ensure the success of the tournament.
You will be entertained by 608 of the best junior high wrestlers in Illinois. Enjoy your time here in DeKalb and thanks so very much for your support of the IESA and the sport of wrestling.

Meet the
2020 GRAND MARSHALS
Bob Bell served as an IHSA licensed wrestling official for 21 years having put on the stripes for the first time in 1997 until his retirement from officiating in 2018. Over the course of those 21 years, Bob was a dedicated and loyal official who was particularly devoted to working junior high and middle schools meets and tournaments. He officiated numerous IESA regional and sectional meets and worked the IESA state finals in 2013 and 2016. He continues to be a friend of the IESA as he has worked mat side at the finals for the last several years. In 2014, Bob was named the IESA Official of the Year by the
IWCOA. He and his Dona are the proud parents of three sons, Eric, Josh, and Trey. Injuries forced Bob to retire from officiating but he has remained a loyal and devoted fan of the sport.
A dedicated administrator who has faithfully served the IESA, Tim Gipe, has spent his entire career in education and athletic administration. A 1985 graduate of Pecatonica High School where he participated in football, basketball, baseball and track and field, Tim attended Rock Valley Community College and then transferred to Sterling College in Kansas. While attending both Rock Valley and Sterling, Tim played baseball and was named all-conference in the 86-87 season. As the current athletic director for Sandwich High School, Tim has been heavily involved in the sport of wrestling. He has served
on the IESA wrestling advisory committee, helped at the head table for several years at the IESA state finals, was named the I-8 Conference Wrestling Administrator of the year for 2015-16, and has served as the tournament director for numerous IESA and IHSA regional and sectional tournaments, the Plano Reaper Classic, and the I-8 conference tournament. He and his wife Dina have been married for 30 years and are the parents of Nolan (daughter-in-law Emily), Anna and Andrew.
Steve Porter graduated from Wauconda High School in 1969 where he wrestled all four years for the Bulldogs. Wrestling for Wauconda helped Steve develop a lifelong passion for the sport. He coached a total of 15 years for Marseilles Elementary School which is one of the smallest schools that participates in the IESA state wrestling series. Despite the small numbers, Steve was able to keep his teams competitive by instilling values and a strong work ethic in his athletes. His motto, ”When you step off that mat, life continues and it is how you perform in everyday life activities by which you will be
measured and how you should measure yourself,” served his students and wrestlers well throughout his career. Steve is particularly proud of the number of his former students who are now teaching and coaching carrying on many of the traditions he taught his wrestlers. An avid supporter of the IESA and the wrestling program, Steve and his wife Mary have three children Erin, Millisa, and Sean along with three grandchildren.

The Sportsman’s CreedThe Player 1 He lives clean and plays hard. He plays for the love of the game. 2 He wins without boasting, he loses without excuses, and he never quits. 3 He respects officials and accepts their decisions without question. 4 He never forgets that he represents his school.
The Coach 1 He inspires in his athletes a love for the game and the desire to win. 2 He teaches them that it is better to lose fairly than to win unfairly. 3 He leads players and spectators to respect officials by setting a good example. 4 He is the type of person he wants his athletes to be.
The Official 1 He knows the rules. 2 He is fair and firm in all decisions. He calls them as he sees them. 3 He treats players and coaches courteously and demands the same treatment for himself. 4 He knows the game is for the athletes and lets them have the spot light.
The Spectator 1 He never boos a player or official. 2 He appreciates a good play no matter who makes it. 3 He knows the school gets the blame or the praise for his conduct. 4 He recognizes the need for more sportsmen and fewer “Sports.”

Top Ten Reasons To Be A Designated Good Sport
Good Sports Are Winners!
10. Because taunting, trash talk and intimidating behavior have no place in high school sports — or any level of sports.
9. Your admission is to watch the performance of highly impressionable 15 to 18 year-old kids — not a license to abuse coaches, officials, players and other spectators.
8. You want others to treat you the way you want to be treated — and how many of us want to be treated with disrespect?
7. We need more positive role models for our kids.
6. People don’t always remember the final score — but they always remember the fan in Section Three who made a fool out of him or herself.
5. Because coaches and officials are also teachers. Why would you harass them in their classroom?
4. A national survey indicates kids play high school sports to have fun — not to be number one!
3. It’s how you play the game that counts.
2. It’s simply the right thing to do.
1. Because sportsmanship begins with you!

ATHLETIC COMPETITION Athletic competition is a very important experience. It provides opportunities to test athletic skills and abilities in competitive situations. It also provides a realization of successful encounters and “neverforgettable memories.” The first step to meet competitive challenges takes place in demanding practice sessions. The athletes realize that they must
discipline their minds and bodies and cooperate with their coaches and teammates to prepare for “game time” competitive challenges. We salute all former athletes who have achieved worthwhile goals in athletics, and we wait in excitement to cheer the present athletes to new athletic endeavors.
